A 34-year-old NEET otaku, chased out from his house by his family, found that his life is reaching a dead end. He then recalled that his life could actually have been much better if he had made better choices in the past.

Just when he was at the point of regret, he saw a truck moving at fast speed, and three high schoolers in its path. Mustering all the strength he had, he tried to save them and ended getting run over by the truck, quickly ending his life.

The next time he opened his eyes, he is reincarnated to a world of sword and magic as Rudeus Greyrat. Born to a new world, a new life, Rudeus decided that, “This time, I’ll really live my life to the fullest with no regret!” Thus starts the journey of a man yearning to restart his life.

To be honest: it starts slow, vol 1 and 2 are an intro to the MT world, from vol 3 to 6 is the 1st arc in the novel, vol 3 can make people drop it and yes the MC is a human tr*sh but..., from vol 8 to 11 and 13-14 are slice of life, dont think it's bad it has a pretty good worldbuilding (maybe the best wb I have ever seen on a novel) and the development of the characters is aweasome, and the rest of the... more>> volumes are the best of this novel.

Usually in the isekai novels you have an objective to complete (like defeating the demon lord) or a goal to achieve (like returning to their world) but in MT the MC just want a normal life but it is at vol 15 when the final goal appears and make you keep reading until the the end. <<less

My favorite novel!! This novel really changed the way I think about life and taught me that I should live my life to the fullest.

To summarize the novel: Piece of tr*sh MC - Got reincarnated to another world - Decided to live his life seriously this time - becomes kinda OP but not the strongest through some hard work and a little luck

Read this if you want to see a guy evolves from being a piece of tr*sh to actually a decent human being by doing his best. Most... more>> of the characters are likeable especially the "president", the world building is great, the art is great, a lot of drama (which some of them even make me cry), some fan service and some comedy too. The enemy actually has some reason and not just "IDK I'm supposed to be evil so I'm doing this sht" which I really like a lot.

Just give it a try maybe 1 volume or something and you might like it too!
5/5 I will definitely read this again <<less

I wouldn't consider this perfect by any means, but rating it a 4.5/5 (if it was possible) will be more than fair.

It definitely is a slow read, with certain volumes where things seems to not be happening, but the build up of the characters and the world building is definitely worth the wait.

Having just completed it, I wouldn't say the ending is anything special, but it is still a decent ending for the long journey that we have gone through together on this 26 volumes.

I'll definitely look back upon this... more>> in the future with fond memories. <<less

I have a mixed feeling about this story, I think this is my first Tensei story and enjoy it much, but the excess drama and too deep plot throw me off.... thus drifting out from my preference zone

I've never read any story in the anime medium that struck such a chord with me, I love the characters, I love the concept, I love the slow pace and the focus of the writing as a biographical work, something you rarely see in anime.

This novel in fact kind of ruined other genres for me, this isn't about being "the strongest", or a out finding some mcgufin or collecting all the girl-pokemon for the harem, it's the honest to God rendition of the life of an individual seeking redemption for... more>> his wasted life, I don't think I've ever read something quite as good and I'm thankful that I got the chance to do so. <<less

TL;DR

If you like good world building, and learning things at the same pace as the protagonist and do don't mind that action isn't a main focus of the story go ahead and read it.

Full review

Moshoku Tensei is one of my favourite Isekais I've ever read. Most people think that Isekai genre needs to be action heavy, with a lot of intense battles. But who ever said that Isekai had to be action heavy? Moshoku Tensei is an example of that, the action isn't a highlight of the series (at least... more>> at V5 it isn't). Instead it focuses on the characters, and the world building. Another aspect is how "normal" Rudeus is when faced with the brutality of the situation compared to other Isekai protagonists.

The scenario I'm referring to is when Rudeus staged a fake kidnapping to mellow up Eris, so she would warm up to him as a teacher the kidnappers actually wanted to kill Eris. Ghislane saved them, but she decapitated the people who tried to harm Eris. Rudeus understandably was in shock, because blood was spilling out of the bodies of the decapitated men, and he was covered in blood clearly in shock. Other Isekai protagnoists would have went along with as if it doesn't even surprise them, or would go an kill someone in a literal bloody spectacle and killed the men themselves.

Rudeus is overpowered yes, but that's only because he has the mental age of a fourty year old. Slyphie was also able to cast magic without incantation this shows that Rudeus isn't special, or too overpowered in some way. His fear of taking a life (which is a very normal and understandable fear) is also limiting him when he has to fight against other people.

It took 3 volumes for Rudeus, Ruijerd, and Eris to reach Fittoa. And at this point I was getting pretty sick of Eris, and Ruijerd. We've been stuck with the same team for 3 volumes. Volume 6 - 7 spoilers ahoy:

Spoiler

Then the second Ruijerd got the two of them to Fittoa he just up and left. Eris, and Rudeus slept together on the same night. Because Eris found out that everyone in her family died. Her father, mother, and grandfather. Eris wanted Rudeus to be her family, hence why she slept with him. The subsequent chapters talked about how she felt like she was dead weight to Rudeus, she thought that Rudeus had a very hard time in the Demon Continent, because of her. Just before the trio arrived at Fittoa, they encountered Dragon God Orsted, who fatally wounded Rudeus, but healed him after his companian said it would be better if he lived. It was there she Eris started to spiral downards, into thinking that she was dead weight, and Rudeus nearly died because he tried to protect her.

Resolving to not be deadweight, she left with Ghislane in the morning after she slept with Rudeus. This is where Rudeus' perspective comes in. He thought he was being too clingy, and that's why Eris left him. He left Fittoa to search for Zenith, his mom. Because he didn't want to stay in Fittoa because it reminded Rudeus of Eris. This is how Rudeus was affected: A girl Sara was in love with him, and she offered herself to him. Rudeus was all for it, but then his little man wouldn't come up during the call to arms. He now has ED.

It's a great novel. Had great potential.

There were some missed opportunities to build up more for the characters, plot, world development and side stories.

The harem was light, not too suffocating. The female characters' personas were well designed.

... more>> The MC is a bit of a let down. He's supposed to do better, as the title suggest. But he fell from home grace as the story progress. He has a lot of potential designed on him.

Character build up were well done. Sadly, they're like fireworks that barely sparkled. Everything good is at the development.

The author could've done more. Seriously. There are holes that could make do with fillers. There could've been more content. Prior to the ending, there's a big potential development that's missing.

But the ending was a surprise. It doesn't seem to be planned out. More like, a sudden inspiration. It feels like the story started and was developed and designed at the idea of the ending.

Overall. I have some regrets.

Loved the story.

I appreciate the characters.

Had more possibilities that could be applied in the novel. *Sigh <<less

Personally I didntlike it much becauseit felt like the first part (s) of the story were missing reading it. Also I dont like depressing based stories much which was kind of the whole intro so far, him looking for his mom from an refugee incident with his background/development skipped. Also I didnt like how the characters looked reading/seeing yhe words/images. The book still was nicely written justnot for my taste.

Honestly, I have very mixed feelings about this novel. On the one hand, the author is pretty good at making the characters appear human, especially the protagonist, since they all have various flaws and make mistakes and grumble over them, especially the protagonist that never seems to stop stumbling due to his own humanity and failings, which is pretty rare and I kind of respect that someone would go out of their way to make a story about a guy who can't seem to grow and is so very human... more>> to a fault, not that this alone makes it a fun read.

On the other hand, this excessively long story of a very flawed human being that keeps on making idiotic mistakes, misunderstands every little thing, overthinks EVERYTHING to the point of paranoia, is very tiresome to read about after a while.

He's so human it hurts and not in a good way. His excessive humility ends up being infuriating when he doesn't use his powers properly or give himself enough credit, he's powerful but is ever the dense protagonist about it, always playing himself down. Have some level of pride, damn it. He's also so averse to killing that he actively downpowers himself by creating non-lethal spells and screws himself over numerous times because he doesn't go in with the intent to kill or at least the will to accept that he might end up killing someone by mistake. Every time he kills someone, it's an inner drama and endless spiel regarding not wanting to kill, the author sometimes pretends he's going to actually grow and stop being so scared of everything only to hit him with a curveball that shatters his confidence and newfound ideas on the spot, so all growth he gets is basically just a temporary thing.

He's so emotionally vulnerable and he personifies the words "afraid and insecure". Not even after succeeding in life with various wives and friends that love him or power beyond almost anyone can he grow mentally. He's around 50+ in combined age and having gone through various tribulations like vast dangerous journeys and mortal battles but he acts like a teenager at best. He'll crack like an eggshell if you so much as look at him the wrong way. Even if that passing glance wasn't a big deal, he'll overthink it and ponder the meaning of it until he digs himself into a deep hole.

We're not talking normal human levels of worry, fear, mistakes and s*upidity here, this guy really takes the price and lives up to his previous incarnation of a shut in that gave up on life. He has no real goals except for trying to protect his family and friends yet does not train properly to do so, he keeps making lethal mistakes that were acceptable the first time but not the second, third, fourth or fifth time. He never actively does ANYTHING, he always needs to be led by the hand like some big man child, he's the very definition of a japanese doormat protagonist that'll bend so far backwards he'll break his back and then he'll at most crawl away like some sad portrayal of a c*ckroach, even his outbursts are nothing big, when he snaps he tends to just do something immature and then run away. He's got no business in a world like that or wielding the power he does.

Honestly, the other characters are pretty boring as well. All of his wives end up as pretty hollow despite the author pretending they're fleshed out, they exist just to prop up his fragile mental state and only god knows what they see in him, it's kind of sad and pathetic when their love for him is all built around misunderstandings, they all started loving him because they thought he was someone better than he was, that he did things with more honorable intentions and that things didn't end up the way they are simply due to sheer dumb luck. Later on, they might've started loving him for other reasons, but it's just hard to get behind love that starts because of misunderstandings where said misunderstandings was never cleared up.

The drama, while lengthy due to rudeus' constant internal monologues, is so boring. The man god is such a dull villain, he exists just as some kind of a crutch the author can lean into for cheap plot since he doesn't have to think up proper reasons for everything happening when he can just blame that one mysterious dude no one cares about about everyone's actions. Most other characters only seem to be there to show that the protagonist is indeed human garbage. I feel like while the protagonist is very "human", so many other characters just appear human at surface level.

Let's go over some parts that show just how annoying rudeus can be

Spoiler

He tells lies to force rujierd to not kill, putting himself and the others at risk, for no other reason than that the little pansy boy is scwared of the fact that rujierd knows killing is the right choice in a lot of situations and him being willing to do so. He ends up on a years long journey with ED because eris left him after the first time (which was a s*upid misunderstanding), where he quite literally just walks around half-dead mentally, even contemplating su*cide, for real, not even joking.

He seems to refuse to think whenever he misunderstands something, needing others to tell him off when he should know it better himself. He breaks down every time something bad happens. He's specifically warned about the "death god's" abilities and how to fight him, only to somehow FORGET something he should've been reminding himself of every day when actually fighting him, almost dying and almost letting others die because of it, then finally remembering but despite that he just despairs, wants to flee with some excuses and he just keeps on hating himself for forgetting instead of just getting on with things. He also never fails, in almost every conflict, to get the rug pulled from under him because he never takes things seriously enough from the start and lets his guard down no matter how many times he gets taken advantage of. Even a monkey will learn from its mistakes... but not rudeus, no, rudeus claims in his inner monologue that he has learned but then goes on to pull the same crap again and again or just backpedaling because why not reduce hard earned character growth to almost nothing

Oh, and perhaps one of the most annoying parts is that no matter how powerful he is or becomes, he always ends up at the losing end. He almost never wins, at least not against anyone of importance, every single fight has him almost dying and you never get the feeling that he's powerful despite him clearly being one of the most OP people in the world, this often applies to those in his party as well. He either meets the few people who are more powerful than him or a bad match-up or he's tired for whatever reason and gets caught off guard. He never gets to show off properly and it's just frustrating when a clearly super OP protagonist seems to have the same power level as whatever chump out there, what's the point of being OP if you can never show it? For all intents and purposes, he's just half-decent and not powerful at all, the actual results runs contrary to the setting and the author's own words.

[collapse]

It was very promising at the start, the first few volumes, before everything had to be so excessively dramatized where everything needed to be a moral dilemma or him fighting his inept nature. I wonder why the author has to shove it in our face that rudeus is pathetic over and over, I don't find it that normal, even if I concede it can be seen as "human", but most half-decent normal humans wouldn't be nearly as pathetic faced the same situations while possessing the same power and knowledge. If he actually grew, it'd be a nice, skilled move, seeing a dude who's pretty hopeless grow gradually into a badass or at least someone who isn't pathetic, but he never does. If we had more comedy, less drama, self-hate and more of him learning and improving mentally instead of just getting curve balled back to square one all the time, this could've been a much better novel.

I had to stop at volume 19, I grew too fed up with his behavior once I realized that no amount of punishment or mistakes will make this dude really grow and stop being a self-demeaning moron that doesn't put his skills to good use in the right places. His neverending whining and crying about his situation and what happened or could have happened is just so god damn annoying and ends up infuriating once you realize this dude never learns and never will, the author refuses to give him the chance to truly improve and become a much better human being, maybe he only does so in the last 1-2 volumes. The entire novel is also written from the perspective of his thoughts, where the majority of text is simply the author explaining his honestly juvenile and pathetic thought process in excruciating detail.
Spoiler

I also hate the idea of 26 volumes yet he never ended up doing anything much, instead leaving the final task/tasks to his descendants, he was a pathetic guy from start to finish, dull that he died too in a world of magic where so many others live for hundreds or thousands of years, this was just the story of an inferior guy with an inferiority complex and traumas who somehow got gifted great power by sheer dumb luck that doesn't even use his powers properly and the only thing he accomplished well was creating his family, it'd be more interesting if the man god had killed a wife or two and led him down a slightly darker path but not to the extent of the alternate future guy that traveled back in time to warn him of the man god wanting to do exactly that

[collapse]

I think the audio book makes it even worse. The one voicing it is pretty bad in my opinion, they make rudeus seem even more whiny by doubling down on making his voice panicky, scared and lacking confidence, they also can't do laughter, roars or sound effects to save their lives, always ends up sounding very wrong, often roars sounds like moans and so on. When you have a pathetic protagonist already, it just makes it ten times worse when his voice is pathetic too, even if the dude voicing him sounds like a 40-50 year old with a gruff voice that would've only fit for his 30 year old previous life.

I'd say give this a hard pass. Read the manga version instead, there you don't have to suffer through all the inner monologue or know how pathetic he truly is. I can't recommend this novel to anyone who doesn't enjoy doormat protagonists or protagonists that never really learn or grow from their mistakes. It just gets worse and worse each volume. <<less

Very entertaining series, so much so that I was able to read 12 volumes back to back. Well, to be more specific, the first volume is really great with an amazing ending and lots of promise, second novel is good, third to sixth novels are kind of dull, seventh novel was really really good, 8-11 pretty good, 12 another amazing entry. So the best volumes are 1, 7 and 12.

Then volume 13 was officially released and I wasn't so impressed, the story has kind of degenerated. Without being specific, let's... more>> just say he is enjoying the romance a little too much. To be more specific:

Spoiler

It would be nice if Rudy would think about something else other than s*x.

[collapse]

Anyway, I don't actually know when I will be resuming reading this, because v13 has put me off, but I'm sure I will read the whole series eventually. To fully enjoy this series, you will need to be able to overlook some things and just laugh them off, if you go in with an overly-serious mindset you will not enjoy the series, just roll with the punches. <<less

One of my favorites novels. Amazing character development all around. I've read it a long time ago so I don't have any fresh thoughts on it, basically it's good go read it. It peaks when the protagonist becomes an adult, so don't go dropping it because you don't like his personality as a child. As for why there's so many bad reviews here, I think it's trolls, the WN has a lot more reviews and it's way more positive (LN and WN are pretty much the same btw).

Amazing Writing, Story Telling, And World Building. Once You start reading the novel you wouldn't be able to put it back till the end so be cautious and read it if you really have that much time to spend; still, it was worth the time it takes to read.

now just looking forward to anime adpation.

I would give it 3, 5 stars, but the system doesn't allow it. Mushoku Tensei seems to have perpetuated a lot of the Isekai tropes we see in novels, manga and anime today, and at the same time it uses tropes from anime and manga works. While this means it doesn't have much novelty to offer, the characters are fairly well developed, and the twist and ending were satisfactory to me.

The novel is told mainly from Rudeus POV, which allows for a mix of good action sequences and comedy, and... more>> to me that is the most important thing in Mushoku Tensei, that puts it one step ahead of a lot of other Isekai LNs. It's very entertaining to read for the most part. While I wouldn't say it is the best LN I've read, I can recommend it if you want a long and generally fun Light Novel to read for a while. <<less

Mushoku Tensei feels like my crack recently. I've been trying to find anything remotely similar to it in an effort to satisfy my Isekai rush.

So what makes Mushoku Tensei good? Well to me it's the aspect of the lifestory. You see the growth of MC from a social degenerate to a respectable person by the end. It's very satisfying to see how the world-building snaps into place, along with the growth of characters we see across tens of volumes. Although the story is focused on Rudeus (the MC), it also... more>> focuses on the growth of the things that Rudeus loves. He also isn't OP either which is another plus. And unlike most of the Harem/Romance series I've seen, he also isn't blueballed by his love interests. He isn't perfect either as he is seen to perv even in his later years. <<less

Personally, I love the novel having reading it from start to finish twice (and having multiple reading by bits). I do understand if people dont like some parts of the novel as it is made that way. Its closely related to the main theme of the novel which I'll explain later.

Mushoku Tensei is slightly different from a lot of isekai novel. Quoting from a previous review, "Mushoku Tensei is not Mushoku Tensei without the entire journey, from beginning to the end" (Level1Pixel, 2019). Mushoku Tensei as a story doesnt provide... more>> you with adventures and amazing fights all the time but rather, takes you on a slow journey.

I understand if some doesnt like this and thats fine. It can go a bit too slow for some that expects it to go differently. Unlike most isekai novel now that puts you in a thrilling fights, funny comedy, sweet love all the time, this novel, although does provide you with those stuff, does not have that all the time. There are some chapters that just tell on how he live his everyday life, normal routines, meeting friends and stuff without anything special happening. To be fair, if you're not interested with normal life, it'll be really boring. But that brings it to the main theme as well.

I never like manga, anime, or novels that depicts too much pe*vertedness (in fact, I dropped some of the best novels with great concepts due to that). I dont mind it with this novel though. You can call me biased, but I do think his pe*vertedness is just how his character is. The author doesnt force the perversion of the MC but just rolls with it. Which, again, ties to the main theme of the novel.

Of course there's negative stuff such as some bad character development, some bad character introduction, and weird story progression. Though, even though I say its bad, it makes sense when you keep the main theme of the novel in mind. If you are repulsed with these kinds of stuff, its really understandable if you dont like or even hate the novel. The novel is just like that.

The main theme? Well, if I were to sum up the whole novel in a short paragraph, the novel is about a guy that want to live his life to the fullest, and never wanting to live a life full of regrets... again.

Mushoku Tensei is a sort of lifestory. Sometimes its boring, sometimes its exciting. Sometimes your hard work pays and sometimes it doesnt. Sometime you're the best and sometimes you're the worst. Sometimes you have to make a life decision. Sometimes, things doesnt go as planned and sometimes it does. Sometimes your friend changes after a few years not meeting them. Sometimes, things you have to do changes due to circumstances. Thats just how life is. And thats why I love this novel. As said, its the whole journey, from beginning to the end.

P.S. If you cant handle reality, I actually recommend you not to read this as it hits quite hard. But if you can handle quite a bit, then this novel is not bad of a journey to take on.

P.S.S. The first few volumes is mostly quite fun though, do have a look. <<less

Though the main character is a bit too lecherous, his struggle was real.

I mean, his fears were always there and he was human enough to admit he was not perfect, but always searched for the best possible solution for him and those he loved.

A good novel to pass the time, with romance, angst and funny moments everywhere.

Well translated and great to read.

Thanks to the author and translators for their work.
