A 34-year-old NEET otaku, chased out from his house by his family, found that his life is reaching a dead end. He then recalled that his life could actually have been much better if he had made better choices in the past.

Just when he was at the point of regret, he saw a truck moving at fast speed, and three high schoolers in its path. Mustering all the strength he had, he tried to save them and ended getting run over by the truck, quickly ending his life.

The next time he opened his eyes, he is reincarnated to a world of sword and magic as Rudeus Greyrat. Born to a new world, a new life, Rudeus decided that, “This time, I’ll really live my life to the fullest with no regret!” Thus starts the journey of a man yearning to restart his life.

Seriously one of the most enjoyable novels I've read on this site. I feel like if the censorship laws in Asian countries weren't so strict every webnovel would be as free and unfettered as this one. It is a dam shame these authors are on a tight leash & pretty much are apart of the PR industry that turns us into passive obedient s*aves.

The author put a lot of afford for this novel from world building to character realism, and development, it make them feel like a real person unlike some CN. I sure other will have more good to say about it.

But, What the Author didn't get right is the politic, especially the power struggle of the prince and princess. Maybe my standard are too high, or maybe because it related to politic the author couldn't do much. Because some of the novel with best political story are incomplete due to ban... more>> or other reason. Or maybe it is not an important part of the story itself.

I feel that the politic are really genetic, No explanation or mention of any :

  • Noble ranking/title
  • Noticeable noble, only the struggle of the prince and princess.
  • Military power
  • what a king rank magician and sword-man had influence over the power struggle
Anyway the story isn't about politic but to put a genetic politic in, kind of turn me off, since I experience other novel that has done a amazing job on it.

This is just my opinion though, go read the novel first before judging it.

Another complain is that there are plot armor in this novel, it just not obvious enough. But, there are also the "character development" part.

The character talk lot about their feeling, which is unrealistic especially in japan. Kind of a trademark in Japanese story though. I want the feeling to be convey in another way, there are misunderstanding but that are a part of life as well. Some feeling are not meant to be talk about.

If you want to experience an isekai life that feel too real, this is a must read, the author done everything other than the politic right. MC is not really involve to much with the political side. <<less

Damn this hit hard, the amount of effort the author put in to explain it is so good ... more>>
Spoiler

like one of my favorite examples is during the epilogue, it shows the emotional story of a girl, who seemed like something unrelated to the story, but in the end, the author was able to allow the reader to feel attached to the girl to feel her experience in the short span of a chapter

[collapse]
along with that, it explains the things, I don’t usually read isekai but if you’re into any fantasy world and just want a hell of a good time, this is a must read <<less

The overall story is good and creative. It has the feeling of when you ask: what was the story of that old epic hero mentioned in the current hero story? Then this is an answer. But the reason for 3 starts is that the author reduce the novel to tr*sh status with so much hypers*xual stuff, sexism, indecency, lustful, and worst of all trying to normalize pe*ophilia.

I hope the Light Novel is able to censor and minimize all the oversexualize content.

The best novel I have ever read.

The twists on this novel are not often but when they do happen its a blast, I got crying a lot during those.

It was one of the best endings I have ever seen in storys.

If you are not very inclined toward le*d protagonists you might not enjoy it that much (bear in mind that he is faithfull and dont cheat)

The MC is a pe*ophile. Because of this story I filter the loli tag whenever I search. So that I don't read stories with them in it.

Plus, there was a dialogue I can't remember. It was between the MC and the girl who got stuck in the world where MC was, as she transported to the world alongside him.

They met later on in the world. And MC asked her why she wanted to go back to earth.

Her answer, that line of hers defined the world MC was in, in a... more>> negative way. While comparing to the real world. It was so true. I immediately lost interest in the story and wondered what kinda crap I am reading.

I have not read even 10 Japanese stories after this. <<less

Why this novel is so popular is well beyond my ability to understand.

The MC of Mushoku Tensei pass the most unlikable MC of all time test with flying colors. And he is not only the most unlikable MC ever, he is also a complete human s*um in the form of a pe*ophile. There has never been a novel I've read in my entire life with a MC that is as disgusting and unlikable as this piece of sh*t the author calls a MC. Worst of all, this disgusting pe*ophile has... more>> absolute no redeeming qualities.

Let's look at this from another perspective. The MC is a disgusting 34 years old, who is reincarnated into a baby. What's extremely creepy about this is that his parents and everyone around him doesn't know. They have no idea that their baby is a 34 years old pe*verted pe*ophile. They show love and affection to such a human s*um who masquerade as their "son".

Most mind boggling thing about all this, is that the MC actually gets WORSE throughout the novel, that is pretty impressive if you ask me. <<less

It was my first lengthy novel but I enjoyed it so my review can be biased.

Pros:

-romance

... more>> -plot

-MC is not hopeless in getting laid

-good characters

-harem members have a decent exposition in the story

-awesome illustrations

Cons:

-MC sometimes is annoying and acts like a ret*rd (I hated his behavior more than once)

-MC's lovers sometimes do lots of s*upid things and you will hate them

-lots of annoying characters

-derail-tier turns of events

-final after story volume is tr*sh

I think MC's family and how he protects it, is the biggest driver of the novel. This is what you should read it for. Though prepare yourself for annoying stuff and sudden turns of events.

P.S.: It's better to skip the last volume. It looks more like a draft or some concept written in "behind the scenes" - style. And after that, there is a summary of MC's life after the final event going until his death. <<less

Personally, I like it

Ive read until volume 11, chapter 5 (no sure about the chapter)

I will keep reading it, but there are certain situations that I hate, the author's point of view on things and how a person should act (as far as I can tell by the way the characters act and "think") is extremelly different from mine at times, so much that I think he is almost the exact opposite of me.

Also, the author appears to ignore the power and capabilities of the MC for the sake... more>> of making it harder to find a solution of a problem <<less

Strong and polarizing start, weaker but still entertaining middle, and an ok ending.

The world is the typical fantasy setting, Magic and Sword, with a few clever changes. But they are done in a pretty acceptable quality, by which I mean it is very enjoyable, so long as you aren't looking for revolutionary stuff. For example, the matter of MC reincarnating is not a norm and is actually explained properly when you finish the story. His strength is also well designed, he isn't the super special chosen one, i.e you can... more>> get his powers by doing what he did.

The characters, oh man. The MC will make you want to commit homicide at first. He improves as the story goes, but never quits being a degenerate to the very end. But that is where the bad point of characters end. Nearly everyone is lovable in their own way, and has enough depth to stop you from patronizing them. Be warned that they aren't perfect and you may find yourself conflicted about them, but hey, that is what you want from a good story, no?

The story becomes really weird when "The ball" drops, you will know what I am talking about when you get there. But before that, you will be thoroughly entertained as you have no idea what is going to come next. After that, you will be a bit bored since fun plot twists happen less. But it never regresses into being bad, that is for sure.

All in all, if you can get past the insufferable MC, you won't regret picking up this thing. <<less

Honestly speaking - this novel is a crap. Of course it being crap does not mean you cannot enjoy it, I did read the whole thing and liked it to an extent. But yeah - one the contrary to what most people here are writing this isn't good at all. The story is generic from the beggining until the end, the supposed plot twists are s*upid and predictable, most of the cast is as bland as it could be. MC's character development is great... Or that's what I would like... more>> to say, if it did exist at all. But alas, it doesn't. I still can't comprehend why I somehow managed to enjoy reading that. Give it a try but do keep it in your mind that only first few volumes are actually decent. It quickly devolves into badly written excuse of a story. <<less

This book had me staying up late at night reading. Not like your other thick plot armor books where the MC always gets what he wants. There are tragedies, doesn't have 1000+ chapters of repetitive plot, ending wrapped everything up so well.

This is the book that got me into reading novels. I'm still reading novels hoping to find something as good as this was. It was a short read, but better than those popular 1000+ chapter books. People can call the MC garbage, but have they seen those other isekais?... more>> Clearly you haven't seen "In Another World With My Smartphone"

Overall, great story, characters had different personalities, roller coaster, must read. <<less

You know what, it's not my cup of tea. I can see how this could appeal to some readers who are very fond of harem novels or those new to the isekai genre; it was my first or second isekai so I ended up reading quite far despite some red flags for me (groping children with an adult's mind, even if you have a child's body, makes me want to vomit). Honestly, I don't care for any of the characters, my rating is purely based on the world building as... more>> I think the author does a very good job at that.

This next part is a very specific (semi) rant so skip if it's not a topic that interests you:

I want to say I didn't bother to finish as I felt there was nothing else that would interest me. While that's true, the biggest reason I didn't want to continue the novel is that I can't stand the way the author goes about making the harem in this novel. I'm already not a big fan of harems in general, but I don't particularly mind ones where we see all the characters' relationships as they grow with the MC. This kind, though, where female characters with "established" relationships with MC disappear just long enough for him to build up his harem then magically reappear absolutely irks me. The fact that the MC gets involved with these girls completely separate of each other has an undertone of monogamy so, when you put it all together, it screams cheating/misleading to me.

But, once again, I don't think it's a bad story. Just too long if you're not completely into everything in its genre descriptions. <<less

I thoroughly enjoyed this novel. The main character is not perfect, he is someone who is trying to improve his self-worth and is always putting forward his best effort. His grand journey captures my interest as someone who wants to observe his joy and sorrow along with him. It feels really complete as you are able to witness his whole life, from birth to his death bed. Ofcourse they were plotholes and some mistakes but overall I believe that the author did a great job in planning the settings and... more>> plots. The last fight felt like a rush but it was more than I could have asked for so I'm grateful for it. Wishing to improve myself as a person, reading this novel really reminds me that you should always try your hardest and that people can change despite their past. <<less

I love this WN so much that I was surprised that I actually read all 24 volumes. I stopped around vol 13 for a month and didn't know if I was ever going to pick it back up but I'm glad I did. I remember reading this every day after coming home from class for the span of about 2-3 months. Mushoku Tensei is what got me hooked on isekai but unfortunately I can't really find anything I like as much as it. After finishing it I was left with... more>> a bittersweet emptiness and no other series I have come across could fill that hole. I'm not saying this is the greatest sh*t ever because it has a good amount of flaws but I really loved it a lot. It had everything I wanted in a fantasy novel: great world building, characters, twists, magic, battles, tension, humor, romance, fulfillment, and responsibility. I highly recommend reading the WN, I haven't read the LN yet but I probably will when it's finished and I don't really like the manga so I can't recommend those versions. If you are looking for a great isekai novel then read this <3 <<less

Ok, I meant 2 stars but whatever.

Oh, and the Tl;dr is a lot more useful than this rant, so skip it if you want a proper opinion

So the story starts of all good and dandy. The MC is doing cool stuff, and I had fun reading it. But that was until he starrted to work under someone (volume 15~ I think). He just started acting like a grunt, which was funny at first, then got boring, as do many other things. I still soldiered on, until I saw a chapter... more>> named "household collapse". So I thought "oh, another enemy noble being destroyed?" Nope. Turned out it was drama in his own house. Like, why author? Sure, realism helps a story, but drama? Wtf. So I stopped there. It did get proggesivly boring, so I didin't regret my desicion. The manga's amzing though. I'd reccomend the manga, not novel (so far).

Tl;dr: starts of nice, but gets old fast. Gets too "complicated" with the author trying out a thing or two, treating the WN like a draft (which it is :/). But the manga is a lot better in terms of art and pacing and other stuff. Read if you liked the beggining. If you don't like his. Later activities (like I didin't) then drop, cause you won't like the story and plot ahead. <<less

ok so I didn't mind the jerking off on his parents funeral, thing. Maybe they didn't get along. The thing that made me jump ship was when the mother was telling her story, and she noticed how pe*verted the baby was. Just disgusting! You cant hold back even with your own mother?! He sexually harassed his mother as a baby! F*cking in*est! If this is how he acts as a child, then whats stopping him from being a rapist?!

[collapse]

pe*verted minds have no appeal in western culture, I just dont understand what the appeal is in asian cultures. I can tolerate it to a certain extent, but when your supposed to be an innocent child and you are still pe*verted. Thats messed up.

I wanted to give this a 3.5, but it doesn't seem like that's possible. I'm leaning more towards a 4 than a 3.

First off, I'd like to say that everything that the negative reviewers are saying are true. It gets pretty over the top at times. The pe*vertedness does slow down the story a bit towards the middle, but the story itself at least has a plot. If you're not into that kinda thing, this isn't the story for you. He likes to talk about butts and thighs and b**bs... more>> and such every so often.

The characterization is good for the most part. The protagonist talks in a consistent and comfortable style (for those who can shrug off the pe*verted comments), coming off as laid back but not lazy. The character interactions are realistic enough to pass off as believable, except the harem members. Holy hell, they're annoying. With exception to one, they're at least not 2D.

However, all of them are pretty much the protagonist's yes-women when they're together. They're way too dependent on him.

I don't quite agree with the tag "Weak to Strong." The protagonist was reborn particularly gifted and higher spec in one aspec over the norm. While he does get stronger through the series, at no point can I say he's "weak." However, the overpoweredness of the protagonist is somewhat mitigated by his own cowardice as well as a certain weakness. He's paranoid of causing trouble and therefore kisses up to pretty much everyone and prostrates himself whenever he's wronged someone. The story starts off with him being shown easily picking off small fries here and there. As the story progresses, you learn that he has a rather fatal weakness that makes him incapable of direct confrontation. He has to then rely on allies and extensive prep work. It's a bit more refreshing as opposed to all the instances of Leeroy Jenkins that tends to happen in novels with this tag. Overall, the meticulousness of his actions make it more worthwhile to read than simply watching him show off.

Some other things to be aware of:

    • The story likes to make a lot of Japanese pop culture references in its entirety, which may be boggling to the readers.
    • Gore occasionally pops up.
    • The school arc, which is like 1/6th of the story, is REALLY slow. Really wanted to skip past it.
    • The story's humor is a hit and miss. You either like none of it or most of it.

Exceptional! Though I must admit the the MC's "Pe*verted" actions (masturbating on his parent's death) are a bit too much. But the story doesn't lack on the good parts too. Great character depth, well planned story (especially the plot twists), romance (although it's a Harem). All in all, a well rounded Novel!

this wb / ln is without a shadow of a doubt, the best about isekai that japan has produced.

I love how much the characters are real, how many different points of view there are and without doubt, she gives a lesson on how to make an end for any Japanese author, the story never leaves the motivation of the protagonist (that for the people who find the rudeus horrible, which is to "live" a second life, with all its mundane aspects) about having otakus cliches, let's remember that this was... more>> the way MC previously lived.

but the best part of the novel, is the character building, from his father to the cliff. <<less
