My Boss Suddenly Confessed to Me

I know the future. This is a BL novel, and the boss I work for is destined to ‘imprison’ the flower shop owner. But things are taking a strange turn.

“You know, Chief Jung, you’re quite fascinating.”

A chill ran down my spine. The attention of a boss was never a good thing. Especially when said boss is the country’s top chaebol heir and had the peculiar trait of being a (soon-to-be) obsessive lover.

“Haha… What do you mean? I’m just an ordinary office worker,” I said, deliberately lowering my gaze and scratching the back of my head awkwardly as I forced a smile. “But if my efforts have helped the vice president even a little, I feel fulfilled and happy.” Subtly appealing to my diligence was a nice touch.

“No,” A cold, emotionless expression crossed my boss’s face, accompanied by a brief, inscrutable smile that quickly vanished. “It’s strange. Your face is utterly plain, yet why…?”

Is he dissatisfied with my face? If so, maybe he should pay for plastic surgery or something!

…is what I wanted to say, but I thought about my credit card bill and paycheck, and wisely kept a poker face.

“Why do you keep bothering me?”

Well, you’ve been bothering me too, but okay…

But then, his next words left me speechless.

“Date me.”

What? Why would I date you?

“Jung Juheon. Answer me.”

The (soon-to-be) obsessed CEO unexpectedly asked me to date him. Not the florist like in the original story, but me, the chief secretary.

Somebody, please save me.

An unexpectedly cute, healing, & wholesome love story. There's a few cliches, but overall it's a better take on the obsessive maniac genre than most typical toxic BLs. Let me explain:

1. The ML's tendency to get overprotective & paranoid, & his desire to lock up the MC as 'protection' is treated as an actual mental illness stemming from childhood traumas that they have to address. It's not an excuse to just forgive the ML for being too controlling & suspicious.

2. The MC is not a helpless damsel in distress, &... more>> despite what the description seems to suggest, he puts his foot down with the ML when he feels disrespected. He does tend to underestimate how evil the villains can be due to not seeing them as a threat in the original novel, but partially I blame the author for hiding the real big bad behind a bunch of incompetent clowns.

3. There's minimal conflict over them being the same gender or incompatible traits, and the MC mainly rejects the ML due to his own struggles with seeing the world as a set-in-stone novel despite things being so much better in this timeline due to his changed choices.

The MC is an unreliable narrator when talking about how much he doesn't love the ML & how he'd be just fine with being a normal employee. He's not the most emotionally savvy, but he's also not a dense black hole of oblivion like many protagonists tend to be. Their feelings get confirmed fairly quickly after he finally starts viewing the ML as a real person & not just the psycho obsessive vice president from a novel. The writing is also pretty good at letting you feel the difference.
Spoiler

Literally, you don't even know the ML's name before that pivotal chapter, around ch 60, when MC realizes he's not the character from the novel

[collapse]

Spoiler

It wasn't necessary for their happy ending so I didn't like the MC becoming an Omega that much, although it was done better with more hints and foreshadowing than the typical cliche Omegaverse - i.e. At the very beginning, it's stated that Betas becoming Omegas isn't even news anymore, and the ML was also thought to be a Beta for all of his childhood. Paradoxically, I also wished they had had a happily babies ever after since MC's trait had changed and he should have been able to get pregnant, but I guess I'll have to hope for the extras.

[collapse]

Overall an imperfect but really enjoyable read that fell into familiar tropes but wasn't too overdone, and definitely not the toxic mess that these obsessive BL novels tend to be. The current rating is too low so 5/5 <<less

It's very adorable. 4/5

The protagonist, Jung Joo-Heon, at the beginning of the work he simply tries to fight against the plot, and ends up losing, but he ends up following a good rumor with the ML, but it's funny and also annoying, as he is very focused on the plot and doesn't realize the changes he made with the ML, he really distanced himself from reality and saw it as a fictional story, so much so that the name of the ML is revealed to the reader only in... more>> chapter 60, until then he only had the title of VIP "Very Insane Pyscol", only when he starts to see the other as an individual who uses his name and only later does he understand him as a person and not a character. The protagonist is not annoying, he is intelligent, but also very arrogant, because he knows the plot he takes very s*upid actions because he blindly trusts the plot, but he usually manages to recover this by himself or has a viable solution.

Cha Eun-hyuk, our dear ML, he is simply cute, when we see it from the protagonist's point of view, he is really a tyrant, but when we see it from his point of view it is sensational, he is adorable and very creative, he is also very rational, his train of thought is so good that it leaves the protagonist silent, I like how sincere he is about his feelings.

My favorite parts are the office staff.

As for the original story.

Spoiler

They have known each other since childhood, Cha Eun-hyuk was born beta and was placed together with Jung Joo-Heon who was a beta, Cha Eun-hyuk liked Jung Joo-Heon who introduced him to his favorite dog, although Joo-heon was afraid of the dog he was kind and called Eun-hyuk his older brother, but both forgot about it, the protagonist who discovers this fact thanks to a childhood photo that Eun-hyuk's grandfather gave as a gesture of peace and apology.

Spoiler

Jung Joo-Heon was indeed Cha Eun-hyuk's right-hand man, but it wasn't a cold master-subordinate relationship like the protagonist imagined. In fact, there was a certain camaraderie between them. When Jung Joo-Heon revealed his fear of rain and Cha Eun-hyuk comforted him, they formed a good bond with each other. Jung Joo-Heon treated him like family because he understood that the two of them had bad histories. During Cha Eun-hyuk's heat, he became very sick, so sick that he needed a mate. With no one else left, Jung Joo-Heon took his place, and the two spent that time together. Before Cha Eun-hyuk regained consciousness, Joo-Heon left and hid this fact. Cha Eun-hyuk has no idea of this fact, only that he recovered well. It was only later that Joo-Heon realized that he had a crush on Cha Eun-hyuk, who had feelings for him, but by then it was too late because Eun-hyuk had fallen in love with the florist Yeon-Soo. Jung Joo-Heon helps Cha Eun-hyuk in her illegal capture because the most important thing to him is for Eun-hyuk to be happy. The reason why Cha Eun-hyuk fell in love with Heo Yeon Soo (the protagonist of the original work) is because her pheromone smelled the same as the perfume that Joo-Heon wore when they were together. When Joo-Heon found out about this, he was surprised and also sad, but he kept quiet, continuing the rest of the plot.

Spoiler

The protagonist becomes an omega, at least it didn't come out of nowhere, the author makes his transformation very slow throughout the chapters, it's funny that at first he hates the idea and is happy to be a beta, he even uses the fact that he is a beta to reject the ml, but of course it doesn't work, but sleeping with the ml, he starts to want to be an omega because he suffers in bed.

[collapse]

Spoiler

I love how the protagonist brought a new good plot, saved the ML from drugs that made him a red flag, made the original protagonist achieve his dreams outside the country, helped many people, the whole story went in a good direction, even for him who conquered his true love, even though he doesn't remember.

[collapse]

I would like some extras, because it's impossible not to want to read more about this couple, they are so adorable.

When you know the original plot and see them happy, it gives you a good feeling. <<less

The story is more or less the "transmigration-ABO: chaebol boss x secretary" trope. As such, although there are certainly heavy topics, you can pretty much see what will happen next and it becomes a light read. But cliches always hit good and that's why they're popular.

There was a surprising amount of introspection from both the ML and MC when it comes to their behavior and choices. Even the reason MC tries to reject ML was explained well. I appreciate that the author didn't just brush them off and actually gave... more>> the characters some depth. It's also nice that even though the villains were so typical, there were unexpected revelations and connections.

The progression of the ML and MC's relationship was enjoyable to read. The beginning was comedic and it even took 60 chapters for the readers to learn the ML's name. Their dynamic wasn't boring and the interactions didn't seem too ridiculous or forced.

Verdict: Plot is cute and not too complex. Tropey but fun.

Spoiler

I loved the ML and MC equally, but my favorite character ended up being the OGMC. He's adorable, funny and strong in character. I can totally see him being an MC of his own story. I also liked how he didn't get the treatment authors usually use where he ends up being the main bad guy behind the scenes or becomes the corrupted rival. He's just doing his own thing and winning in life haha.
