Before his reincarnation, Wen Yu always thought that his childhood sweetheart, Fu Chengque, was like the snow on the high mountain, unattainable.

But later, he realized that she was not ice and snow at all. She was clearly a penguin standing on ice. With one slip of her foot, she tumbled down the mountain…

——————

Next door.

Fu Chengque looked at her golden finger and felt extremely puffed up! She wrote hastily: “I, the future empress, the superhuman, the destined deity Fu Chengque, am recruiting talents! Help friends regardless of reason, sign up quickly!”

But her tasks were not only related to her childhood sweetheart Wen Yu, but each one was super difficult!

【Make Wen Yu say “But I like it.”】

【Have a candlelight dinner with Wen Yu.】

【Whisper to Wen Yu for ten minutes.】

She’s just a girl, not a lover. How could she possibly complete them!

What’s absurd is that, although things didn’t go as expected, she still completed them all!

[Highly recommended for people who enjoy both male protagonists and/or female protagonists]

(TL;DR at the bottom)

It absolutely blows my mind that this is not rated higher. I consider it one of, if not the, best childhood friend romances I have ever read. It is super sweet, fluffy, and funny. Even if it is not your cup of tea (which I can understand, as I explain in the cons below) this absolutely, in no way deserves a 1-star. I want to leave a longer review so anyone considering this novel has an actual idea of what to expect, since the rating... more>> is BS.

I want to clarify the premise. It is unique and makes for interesting interactions, but if you are like me and read a bunch of novels that kinda blend together in your head, you might not get it right away. MC is a regressor. In his past life, he and his childhood friend (FL) drifted apart in high school, which had always been his regret. He always saw her as an unreachable ice princess-type, but in reality she is a dork lol. In his second life, MC wakes up only a year-ish after he and the FL first drifted apart. He does not actively romantically chase after her, but his personality changes naturally had them interacting more once again. The story picks up from there. I personally love that the story starts in medias res and we are not forced to read a 15-30 chapter intro arc where the MC slowly gets closer to the FL. It gets right to how their relationship as friends grows and how their feelings develop.

About the system: MC and FL both have the system. They do not know that the other has a system. Only the FL's system gives tasks, all of which are related to the MC, but they both get the rewards when the task is completed. This makes for a funny parallel where the FL is struggling to achieve the tasks before her system punishes her, while the MC will just get a notification randomly of 'task complete!'

Pros:

    • Awesome slice of life. Do not ignore that tag. It starts with them in their last year of high school, and progresses to university life. It is not slow by slice of life standard imho, but would be considered slow if you are not used to the genre. But by chinese novel standards, the pacing is great. Nothing is dragged out, no unnecessary arcs, arguments, or misunderstandings, I love it. They also don't drag on/overexplain about the side business the MC starts with his future knowledge, which I am grateful for. I am here for one thing and one thing only- the main couple and their romance.
    • No drama so far. I'm expecting/hoping we get to see the MC and FL be jealous and cute once they start dating in university, but you do not have to worry about annoying love triangles, forced misunderstandings and characters acting s*upid for the sake of a n g s t.
    • Awesome main characters with the sweetest dynamic of golden retriever GF and hopelessly in love BF. Fu Chengque is a very loveable person and Wen Yu's teasing and helping her is the best. Their interactions are so so so much fun to read. Chengque is a hilarious character- she became a bit of a chunni after getting her system, but I promise only in an endearing and not annoying way- and their banter and back-and-forths are what make this novel so memorable. They don't push each other away because of their feelings, the FL isn't a cookie-cutter 'omg what am I feeling I need to act weird around MC for 20-50 chapters so there is a misunderstanding to resolve'. The recent new years arc (around chapter 120) really pushed their relationship forward and I was savouring every moment.
    • A mature MC who still goes through character development. Watching the MC reconcile his preconceived notions of the FL from his past life is beautiful. He gradually comes to accept that he had a totally wrong idea for her and falls even harder, which is just the cutest. I love how he progressed. The FL's progression is great to follow as well. She didn't consciously pull away from the MC- they just kind of drifted apart. As they drift back together, she realizes that she was a bad friend and makes up for neglecting their friendship.
    • Great side characters. They really make this story into an amazing slice of life and romance. Every single character- the friends, the teacher, the parents- feel purposeful and distinct. Their dynamics with the FL is also just the funniest since everyone indulges her chunni-ness and it becomes an inside joke for the friend group. You really have to read it to understand how amazing the characters and their relationships are in this story. The perfect high school SoL.
    • The story does not bite off more than it can chew. The friend group feels very natural and it avoids the strategy of 'one arc per side character' to develop them. It feels very much like high-schoolers. There aren't a lot of faces to remember that make the story confusing, convoluted, or take attention away from the main couple. The story is not trying to do a lot, and I hope it does not change that.
    • Great translator. Super clean and polished work, a pleasure to read.
Now, the cons. I'll share the few reasons I think people might have given this a low rating:

    • They didn't read the tags. Knowing how most novelupdate users, I am confident, CONFIDENT that their main complaints were the story was too slow or not exciting enough. There is not a lot of drama between the main characters- just gradually the MC becoming bolder, and the FL discerning her feelings as friendly vs romantic. The non-romantic challenges the characters face are exams, school events, growing up and splitting up for university, etc. I love that there is barely any drama- the focus remains almost entirely on the two main characters navigating the end of high school and their emotions for each other. Also, it is a slow burn. I am fairly confident that they will get together around chapter 200. But man, every step of the journey so far has been the best. Even though they are not together yet, I love that neither the MC nor FL are afraid of their feelings, so they are just growing closer and closer and closer. I totally get it if that is not your cup of tea. But that doesn't mean the tea was made wrong T_T.
    • MC is a laid-back character. I have found that novelupdate users do not tend to like male MCs unless they are action-oriented face-slappers, sociopathic cold-blooded killers, or absolute babe-slayers immediately. There is no drama for this MC to cut through, no young masters or pushy forced love rivals to stir the pot. This MC is confident and secure in his romantic feelings for the FL, loves her personality, and is willing to wait for her (and push/tease her towards) realizing she feels the same way. It's a super wholesome perspective, especially after his full character development, and I love the simple premise of a confident MC whole-heartedly pursuing his kinda immature childhood friend. I am pretty confident lovers of this genre will also like it. But I can see how people expecting different would have written this off.
TL;DR: Anyone looking for a sweet, wholesome, well-written slice of life that you can get emotionally invested in should read this. Anyone interested in the 'golden retriever GF and hopelessly in love BF' dynamic should read this. Anyone interested in a mature, sensible, but still humorous MC should read this. Anyone wanting a quick romance and conclusion probably wont like this. Anyone looking for a lot of drama and angst probably will not like this. Anyone who thinks high schoolers and bubbly FLs are annoying will not like this. Anyone with bad taste will not like this. (Last one is a joke I swear)

I have defended this story vehemently because its rating does not match its actual quality. I will probably come clean this review up some time in the future because this is mostly incoherent ramblings of a madman who likes this novel too much. Translator, I really hope you keep translating this gem. I can't wait to continue following Chengque and Wen Yu's journey. <<less
