Had potential in the beginning but fails short due to author's inability to string together even remotely sensible decisions made by almost every single character in order to keep the conflicts in the story or even the plot chuggin in a seemingly random direction.
Spoiler
    • The whole Erica plot is absolutely pathetic coming from the supposedley thoughtful people for Herold's sake and it only works if there are huge leaps in everyones understanding of conversations, people, and events surrounding Herold.
    • Attempting to recreate the gaming scenes by forcing the game's main characters along after interacting with them in a non-hostile way is like trying to stop a diverging river with buckets. You either sacrific your morals and play your character so you know exactly how the world will progress or you abandon the futile attempt of only making 'small and acceptable' changes. Choosing the second option will require something like plotting future events with capable individuals in rough outlines instead of just waiting for things to happen for 15+ years.
    • The extremely forced and sad attempts to reason out why everyone will hate Herold Stokes for [insert arc here] takes away so much from this novels characters that it almost makes reading anything related to the antagonistic individuals to be summed up with, "didn't cooperate, made everything get dragged out for no reason." Skipping parts related to such pointless acts didn't leave me feeling like I missed much or anything at all.
    • There are a very small amount of death flags that the character undergoes at all since he was able to avoid the majority of them by take premature action. What was left over was hamstrung attempts to create new ones that do not feel like Herold should have survived or that the events were so trivial to deal with that they should not have been counted as a 'death flag' to begin with. At no point did I get the feeling like there was a 'between' option for the flags.
      [collapse]
I'm sure I missed many other points that would increase to decrease a readers enjoyment of this novel but these particular issues I mentioned were bothering me so much that I kept this novel on the backburner until I noticed that with the webnovel quality of descriptions for enviroments, people, actions and expressions was for some reasons taking over 6 years to release just above 100 chapters. With that abysmal rate of release, I honestly felt like any attempt for me to keep this novel in mind anymore was foolishness on my part.

Incredibly well written, like a shonen version 0f "my next life as a villainess" but the death flags are much more real, the MC and female lead's relationship is incredibly well written, and the conflict is much higher stakes. You are constantly reminded that MC isn't just maneuvering so that all the protagonists of the games like him, he is walking a thin line between opposing the protagonists and stunting their growth with support, he is clearly impacted by the isolation he faces both from being in a different world,... more>> and not having anyone he can truly trust. Add in the remaining ego of his host body which makes him unable to communicate, and you have a well crafted story outlining the suffering of a boy who has not lived for himself once for over 10 years. MC is similar to reinhard from Re:Zero's plight of only being able to be a hero since he is the only one capable of facing any and all threats to the kingdom. He knows that as someone with knowledge of the game, he has an obligation to both force the heroes to grow stronger and progress the story, even if it trips flags which can lead to his death. <<less

When I started reading, I originally found myself liking the story. There were many parts that I usually would turn my nose up at that I found myself looking past, despite myself. I enjoyed the protagonist Harold's blustering and rude words that had a sort of charisma to them. I didn't mind that he was a cliched overpowered character. I didn't mind that there were some contrivances on the part of the author. I just enjoyed the reading. Until I didn't.

The greatest flaw this story has is losing its sense... more>> of fun. Comedy is a great tool because it allows for more whimsical or contrived events to happen without breaking the immersion of the reader. A good example of this is Harold's dialogue. We know there is a big difference between what he says and what he means, and the contrast is the joke. Where the cracks start to show is when the story starts taking itself too seriously. At the start, the author seemed to understand that his story was inherently melodramatic (chuunibyou, if you prefer) and balanced it to keep it fun. At some point, this understanding was lost and without it, the story lost its way. It became edgy, and not the fun edgy. It became cringey, and a chore to read.

I cannot in good faith recommend this for anyone to read. If you decide to read in spite of this review, then I suggest stopping around c49. I forced another twenty chapters because I thought it might rekindle the spark of enjoyment, but it didn't. <<less

The writing of the story, the plot development and the translations are all top notch, I have some quibbles about the characters' decision-making skills, but I like their personalities regardless, I would reccomend anyone interested in fantasy WN or LN to give this a shot.

I'm really enjoying this story, but it suffers from the same problem many "based on a linear game isekai" suffer from, and that is that for some reason, the protagonist absolitely has to adhere to the original plot for "the best outcome" and for some reason... more>> they can't think of the world as reactionary enough, as if it's not a world they're in, but a linear plot.

It really makes the MC seem super dumb.

Spoiler

I'm looking forward to a story where the MC just decides "f*ck it I'll do my own thing", and breaks away from the plot entirely. I don't understand why Harold can't just be upfront and honest with Ericka and everyone after starting to work for that doctor guy? What's stopping him from training the party up himself and joining them in their fight? The only reason he's not doing that is because.... he thinks Ericka hates him? How about, y'know, communicating. Language. It works wonders when used. He could just have poisoned or stabbed the Freud dude sometime all these years anyway before he started being suspected, why do it in such an unrealiable roundabout way.

At this rate, all he's doing is giving himself and Ericka psychological issues the size of the moon. I wish they'd just team up as a 2-man squad and wreck shit, while having an awkward but sweet romance, instead we have the current mess with so many characters that feel superfluous.

Only real gripe is that it should be called "Misunderstandings Show no sign of Ending".

MC & FL often misunderstand each other & situations causing needless suffering and slowing the romance to a snail's pace.

This is one of best isekai novel I have read. It is a novel I like to see be animated. The author try his best to show MC internal struggle but didn't force him extreme tragedy. MC is also not extremely sad or broken by his situation.

Spoiler

The MC do not have cheat like ability or op from the begining. He has to train like 12 hours in a day or fight againts dangerous monster to get stronger. He get held up in a situation where MC is forced to manipulate his friends to fight the last boss. As he is constantly being watch by the last boss. The FL is not like other anime isekai girls who just fall for him at first sight or without a reason. She is not a flower brain girl

[collapse]

The only problem is that author reveal the answer to the mystry to soon and doesn't keep up the pressure

Spoiler

When MC talk with FL about something to fulfil his plan, the author reveal that it will be the reason the FL coming to the truth about the mu*der accusation on MC or falling in love with her

Or where it reveal that MC is going to die soon by his sword which steal his life force but after a few chapter it reveals that MC has found a solution regarding it and he is not gonna die

Start of interesting plot but it really annoying afterward. MC act like 10 year old child which try to play cool and poor. His decision in all event that's writer try to convince is MC try everything because he don't want death flag, BUT all he did is just non-sense. I think every normal people can do better than this childish MC.

The only thing I can suggest is don't waste your time to lower your intelligent with this Novel.

If, like Elivi, you feel the novel is at fault for not conforming to your predisposed (and unrealistic) expectations for how intelligent people can be, then please look outside and rid yourself of those ridiculous fantasies.

All in all, this is an amazing work, and the translator, Defiring, does a fantastic job in bringing the story to life. I honestly wish he/she/they took on this novel first so the first half would've been better.

At first, the novel appears rather bland and unoriginal, but it truly shines by around when Defiring takes... more>> over, which is when the story's quality improves by leaps and bounds. All the characters get a lot more development, become more relatable, and the story drops a lot of unnecessary/confusing plot threads, bringing the overall quality up. I first thought the protagonist, Harold, would just be bad-mouthed brat, but the author quickly tones down the language to something more realistic and understandable, while also keeping the essence of the idea intact. Refined is the word I'd use for it.

When — and this is not an if — this gets an anime adaptation, I could see it being in the big leagues with Naruto, Attack on Titan, Hero Academia, etc.

Please give it a chance, at least up until chapter 49 when it really gets good! <<less

This novel is boring. There is no unique trait, no character development, no real enemy threat. It can only show how OP the MC is and how other characters respect him with a lot of cliches.

Ok this is a new type of isekai.. The story of MC gets misunderstood by everyone it is refreshing not like any generic isekais. The MC is kinda tsundere tho and always self blaming himself but he is still on alpha mode not like any other JP beta MCs. He doesn't have any confidences but have a motivations there is a bad things like a plot holes but bcus this novel is making me feels excited and enjoyment by a new experiences so I will give this a higher score.

One of the best stories that I've read that will really pull you in. The struggles of the MC just to break his death flags are just... wow. It's emotional but not overbearing. The way that the story is told isn't awkward and it flows naturally as you read.

For the characters, I find the MC very likeable and you can even find one character as best-girl. The plot has a good direction, one that doesn't deviate from its general objective, which is very much appreciated. Since this is so, it... more>> is possible for the reader to be naturally immersed in their world.

Truly a good read. Kudos to the author and the translator. <<less

I like the story. But maybe if I read this before I read tr*sh of the count's family. I will like it more. Its just this one resembled TotCF but in a darker way. Differences like the behavior and attitude of the parents and also the way he cant really control the character he is. And the people around him only a few has change their perspective of him. These are all good differences and it makes the novel more exciting. I even got teary on one part when the... more>> MC cried. I guess the story has potential, but the combination of court language, imperfect translation and japanese insights dont mash well together. I had to stop reading because I found it very bothersome to understand what they are talking about.

Alright all I had to say was that this novel was truly EPIC. First of all, I have just recently started reading LNs.I was a manga and anime person only so reading LNs patiently is a big task for me but this had so freakin invested. Alright forst of all to all the guys totally complaining about the MC acting alright in the first chap, Seriously guys can't you freakin read he said his body acted on his own and he found this eerie and the reason for this is... more>> actually stated at the end of vol.2

with the comedy elements of Harold calling everyone bastard. Him not being able to say what he wanted.I honestly laughed and enjoyed it quite a lot

then the mental strain of the MC shown in the LN was just BRILLIANT. Tbh I was so invested at times that I couldn't bear to see him in pain. Vol 3 and 4 rips your heart and I jist wanna give him a big hug

no harem, Pure action, light comedy and things making sense

and the only reason I picked it up was cause of his poisonous mouth that didn't let him do as he pleased. It was refreshing to see MC working to improve conditions while his mouth was contradicting him and causing difficulties for him because all the novels just depicts MC avoiding flags by using their witty mouths to make people love them and then they work to improve their lot. But this guy worked in the opposite situation. Even though it was frustrating at times too but generally good

LOVED IT!!! <<less

This novel has been one of the reasons why I check novelupdates daily. Although the reincarnated/transported to a game world story trope has been overdone more than a thanksgiving turkey, the story manages to hold its own because of how unique and fleshed out the characters are, the world building, and the pacing of the plot.

Harold does seem overpowered but the story has a way of making it seem like there is always a chance of failure or that Harold cannot truly win 100% without sacrifice which is something many... more>> authors of Mary Sue characters don't do as well as the author does. The other characters are also very nicely fleshed out with their own personalities and unique motives (very nicely shown through the well thought out Different POV chapters).

One thing many OP MC novels fail to do is also world build and even though the novel is written from Harold's POV, the author hits the nail on the head with how to world build. Many authors focus too much on the protagonist and forget about what happens around the protagonist however My Death Flags gives the reader just enough information to make it interesting and let you theorize what is happening in the world around Harold.

The pacing is also consistent throughout the novel with no major abrupt changes while still feeling like the story is progressing nicely. There are no major plot holes and everything is well thought out from the author's part right down to even the comedic parts of the novel.

Overall, one of my favorite japanese web novels which I would recommend to anyone. <<less

The story isn't bad but for some reason Author simply pushed MC to become the self-sacrificing tragic hero who doesn't mind being loathed, hated and at this point it seems he doesn't even mind dying any-more as long as the world is safe... which is the exact opposite of what the MC's plans are at the start of the series, which is to escape the fate of being killed because he took over a body of a villain that had the death flag.

Worse of all however is that MC can... more>> often easily accomplish everything he did, without reviving the wrong reputation for it but still, the author wants him to be the tragic hero so hey... here it is.

Adding to that however, by the end of the second volume, it's pretty much everyone loathes the MC but MC doesn't seem to care at all and has no reaction to it at all. I know that ignoring what people say about you, saves you a lot of trouble in life but generally, when entire world feels like spitting at the mere sight of you, it's not something a PERSON could ignore... but hey it's not like MC needs to be realistic does he.

In any case this major flaw of the story simply explodes at the start of the third volume and it really pushed me off. <<less

A novel where the author makes a basic mistake of trying to write a character smarter than himself. This results in a plot that has more holes than Emmental cheese. His actions make his an idiot because he causes all problems to himself and ignores opportunities for a religion of preserving the timeline instead of doing logical thing to have a plan to get the best advantage he could (no matter that MC doesn't know most of the actions because they weren't in the game).

For plotholes start with potion vegetables... more>> where the author tries to make MC smart but makes the epic fail as three people could keep a secret if one of them is dead. Whole plan falls apart because the first merchant would give few golds to a farmer for profits and it would spread pretty fast everywhere. <<less

This is a good novel. You can see that the MC tried hard to stay alive and help the people he care about. He stranported to another world and turn out he be an evil character in the game he used to play. The romance development in this story are good and not rushing. The plot story are unpredictable and I dont feel bored to read this story again and again
