Until– The Death Guard known as Hades appears. The threads of destiny have been twisted beyond recognition, and can the presence from the outside world reverse the tragic fate of countless beings?

Now, the gods have placed their bets.

But Hades doesn’t know any of this yet, for he is currently crying like a kicked imp.

“God damn it!!! Of all possible worlds, why the Warhammer universe!?”

“NOOOOO!!! I don’t want to be a Death Guard! I don’t want to be tied to Nurgle!”

“Can I just die and start over?!”

A comedic novel, where an otaku protagonist is transported to a grimdark world and finds himself torn between misery and crying like an imp.

Short Version:

As far as I am concerned, this is 5 stars so far. Now I know much of the general Warhammer 40k lore and so far it is pretty accurate. I know that the author is trying his best to stick to the lore especially the environment that

Mortarion grew up in. And since this is technically a fanfiction, the author does have some liberties to tweak things to fit in his novel and so far those tweaks fit right in as they do clear up some of the misgivings that some... more>> 40k authors put into the lore. It is enjoyable for me to read and even funny at times so I can't wait to see the translation catch up to the 757+ chapters it has today.

The plot itself is basically a self insert and he gets a special power. Lucky for him, he know Warhammer 40k lore and is currently doing his best to avoid Nurgle and Chaos in general.

Spoiler

There is no romance in the story, 40k is all about grimdark so named characters will die all the time so don't get too attached to characters. In addition due to Hades being an outsider, the strings of fate are twisted and the butterfly effect is going to kick in and things will spiral out of control. But one thing is for sure, Hades does make Mortarion a loyalist. Angron will be a loyalist as well cause he was found way earlier due to Hades and the Butcher Nails are reversible now (takes some time though).

Hades's power is similar to being a blank/pariah/null expect that his blankness can be expanded outwards like a sphere thus cutting off the warp. At first, he can't control it but later on he gets better and better at this. This power kinda seems OP but it does seem to have its limits.

Now I will admit Hades does kinda have plot armor because technically all outsiders should be killed on sight but the Emperor decided to give him a chance just to shake things up in the Great Game and hopefully allow the Emperor to gain an advantage against the Chaos Gods.

Its missing sci fi tag in genre

Disclaimer: I do not know any warhammer lore.

So far 5 stars, the plot is unique and already way better compared to every other japanese/korean copy paste isekai/reincarnation where you already know what is going to happen because the authors are just copying it from a previous copy pasted work. Idk if its the warhammer lore/plot itself that makes this novel good or if the author himself is good at writing. As someone who has no warhammer knowledge, I like the plot and story so... more>> far as its new and something I havn't read read before. I also love how its intergalactic space setting plus theres no system so far. I think the MC might be dense to romance as there is a little romance in this novel unless the girl is gonna die soon to make it dramatic and sad for MC. <<less

Overall 5/5 - So far so good

Story (5/5)

If you know warhammer lore accurately, you might feel like it is 4/5. But as author said: He doesn't know much warhammer lore, and doesn't intend to be lore accurate, so take this into account.

I never thought I would be reading a warhammer 40k fanfic from a chinese side of the fandom. I know 40k is popular in russia, but never thought it is also popular in china. The story revolves around a fan who got reincarnated in... more>> barbarus before the emperor of mankind found mortarion. Even though it is a kind of fanfiction. I found the story engaging enough that I read it from the start until I caught up to the latest chapter (v1c22 at the time of the review) in one go. I don't feel any irritation from reading except some lore conflict
Spoiler

I'm not the expert on the lore myself, but I believe blanks could still use firearms, as sisters of silence did.

Aside from that, the author doesn't jump POV too much, making it easier to follow. Even if you don't know the lore, I believe you could follow the story just fine, except the few paragraphs where author mentioned some character which doesn't impact the story yet. The author also briefly explains the warhammer universe in the first chapter, which helps in following the story.

For those who don't know the lore but want some context:
Spoiler

Primarch - 21 Gene Engineered sons of the emperor of mankind, scattered through various worlds by the chaos gods, mortarion is one of them. In the original 40k universe, mortarion later betrays the emperor of mankind.

Chaos Gods - the main 4 chaos gods who resided in the warp (the author explains the warp in the first few chapters) Nurgle - associated with Disease and Decay. Tzeentch - associated with Trickery and Change. Khorne - associated with Battle and Wrath. Slaanesh - associated with Cruelty and Desire. The chaos gods influences intelligent beings from inside the warp. They could also send demon into the physical world. Mortarian was associated with Nurgle after his betrayal of the emperor.

Kharn the betrayer - a space marine who served khorne.

Belisarius Cawl - one of the greatest mechanicus (tech-priest) of mars. The mechanicus manage humanity's technology.

Characters (5/5)

I don't feel irritated or annoyed with any characters so far. Even though the protagonist (hades) seems a bit like a typical reincarnation/regression novel protagonist, the author mixed him into the story well enough that he doesn't make the novel boring. He is also not overpowered. For the other characters, the interaction between character doesn't seem off (except herila at first, but author came back to explain this unnaturalness in later chapters). There are too few chapters to judge in terms of character development (as of v1ch22).

Translation (5/5)

From v1c1 to v1c11 I read Galaxy Translations afterwards I read Dao-Divine Translations. Both did a good job so far. No spelling error spotted. No strange words. Excellent. <<less

A very nice fanfiction about Warhammer 40k. The grammar is fine most of the time, though the earlier chapters could certainly use a good edit to correct some spelling and grammatical mistakes. The story really hits its stride past the initial 10-20 chapters, so I would say see how you feel up to that point then consider reading on. Characters are done fairly well though some lack a little depth. The best way I can describe it is that they all have a clear purpose as a character, which they... more>> all serve well, and really doesn't that just epitomise every Warhammer character?

My main criticisms would be that more attention to the world and setting should be paid. Obviously that's a personal thing and a rather common flaw in fanfiction where the assumption is you already know the setting, I do however feel Barbarous especially suffers from a lack of description and engagement with the setting.

My second minor criticism would be that the story suffers a little in the later chapters detailing the politics within the Legion. Mostly you can follow it, but sometimes you can get lost as the story drops certain story beats, forgets them, rephrases them, and then drops them again so it becomes a little hard to track what part of legion politics the characters are currently talking about.

But the story is strong, the authors willingness to be bold with the setting and address some of the issues with the reincarnation start is excellent and what a lot of fanfictions fail at. Similarly depictions of the legion and chaos are especially well done, and I respect the authors courage in tackling these things well in the story, which are very easy to get wrong.

My final gripe - and this is really a personal preference thing rather than an actual criticism - would be that Mortarion, Typhas and Hades relationship is rather nebulously defined. Personally I feel there are a few too many moments where Hades just withholds information from or refuses to talk to Mortarion for plot convenience, rather than as a part of his character. And his interactions with Typhas are rather nonexistent, so I would like to see them interact more, be it clashing or bonding.

But all in all, a very good fanfiction which is certainly of a higher quality than most. I urge the author to continue writing as they have at least one avid reader, and would urge any Warhammer 40k fan to give this a read. <<less
