Murong Yan is “dead.” His subordinate tells him that his love has been crying by his grave every single day.

He’s ecstatic and sneaks over to catch a glimpse, only to find that his love isn’t crying at all; he’s just standing quietly in front of the grave.

Feeling hurt, he goes to probe his love while under disguise.

Murong Yan: You come to see him every day. Is it because you miss him?

His love: I come to see how tall the grass on his grave has grown.

Murong Yan: …

This is a cute little novel about the romance between a guard and an owner of a gambling house....

Spoiler

... who is actually the crown prince.

[collapse]

Together, they take down foreign and domestic enemies to allow for national independence.

There are 2 side pairings, one between a commander and a royal healer, the other between a lady and the gambling house's 2nd in command.

Overall it's fun and funny. Just don't think too hard about the plot.

5 stars

This was a short read. The chapters were rather short, the plot wasn't too complicated, the humour was really good and I loved the characters.

Just a spoiler regarding the position (not a spoiler for anyone who read the full chinese summary) : ... more>>
Spoiler

Murong Yan is the Gong hahaha. I actually wasn't expecting that based on the english summary but my senses went off in the first 3 chapters. It was obvious.

[collapse]

It's a typical cold love interest, mixed in with hidden identity and some country/palace politics plot but I really like hidden identity (exhibit A: Mo dao zu shi) so this was just perfect for a light read.

There's another side BL CP with the general and doctor and while I'm usually all over the side CP, this time I really enjoyed the main CP more than the side but I'm going to say, for once the author dedicated plenty of screen time to the side CP. So good for them =.=

Just a little rant:
Spoiler

At least for the first portion of the book, the cold love interest trope kind of makes me sad for the other party where it feels very unequal in terms of emotions where one clearly is more emotionally invested than the other. Is like that saying where the person who confesses loses? Anyway, for all the light and humour, I actually like the soft moments in the book (especially the flashbacks) between the main leads despite the frustration of the unequal affection because there's a reason for it later on and once it's resolved, they are on equal footing. The sweet moments were the best.

[collapse]

Overall, a good HEA. <<less

[edited review - April 20, 2025]

(review edited because the translation process allowed me to realise things that I hadn't during my first digest of the story)

-----

... more>> Hi, I've picked up this translation on CG early this year (2025). I'll try to make my review as objective as possible.

As many of the previous reviews suggest, this story is not for those looking for gripping plotlines or riveting schemes - it's for those looking for a little laughter, a little sweetness, and a quick read (each chapter is really short). This novel is on the silly side - the author even mentions that this book is the 'wu li tou' sort, which I would translate as 'neither rhyme nor reason'. The one initiating most of the 'crack' is the gong (MC), as well as a few sillier side characters. Mostly, each chapter is like a short comic - there's usually a funny 'punchliney' scene at the end, and it's rarely serious.

This silliness worked in my favour, because I found it incredibly healing to read on tougher days. One caveat is to not take the gong too seriously, or he'll just seem like a huge perv with nothing but fooling around with the shou on his mind. The things he's actually doing behind his goofy guise are slowly unraveled as the novel progresses. While he is not the s*um sort of gong, I do wish he could give the shou a little more space at times (read: be less handsy), and for this reason my true review is actually a 4.5. It's lucky that he's mostly just playful rather than an actual perv; moreover, he's mostly just playful, just like many of the other characters, whose sillinesses had provided the bulk of the humour in the novel.

The author's writing style is unpretentious and down-to-earth -- you rarely see beautiful or heart-stopping lines in the novel, and when those do appear, they're phrased in a way that is very easy to understand, but also very easy to empathise with. I'll give an example of a line I really like in a spoiler tag (I can only place my own translation here because I don't think we can add Chinese words into a review on NU) :

Spoiler

When had I found out about that person having been alive all this while? thought Gu Lang. It was probably when he'd had taken pains to save Uncle Zhao's life, only to wish for nothing but a piece of bamboo in return.

In this world, you're the only person who would be willing to offer such a loss-making proposition.

(I loved how she changed from third person address to second person address. This subtle move captured my heart in an instant :'))

[collapse]

Overall, the humble quality of the book makes it a fairly heartwarming and relaxing experience reading her stories, although it's something that I would pick when I'm not looking for food for thought... it's something I would choose in a heartbeat when looking for something to cheer up with. It's amongst the most relaxing and funniest danmei novels I've read, and I enjoyed it greatly, even if it provides neither enriching content nor writing. It's a novel which has reminded me that plot and writing style is not all that matters in a novel, because enjoyment can be derived from far simpler aspects of a story. <<less

This is nice, so light-hearted.

This is what you call imperial drama but created in a jokes and simpler tone.

The most best thing about this novel than the other is how much side couple have scenes, you can say it's a lot.

Anyway, this is not amazing, amazingly good but it's a nice breeze. A really good reading indeed.

Just try to read this, you will enjoy it.

Ps : sorry for my English, it's broken much [laugh. Jpg]

This novel was really funny! The MC gong is the highlight of the novel, simply because he's so hilarious. Just don't take him or the novel too seriously! It's a must-read if you like historical political novels that are light on the politics and scheming, which is not the central focus of the novel - rather, the characters and relationship are mostly what push the plot. Good and light-hearted change of pace away from beautiful but heart wrenching political intrigue novels.

This novel, despite being extremely short, managed to have a good romance, characters and plot. Of course, there is nothing fantastic in these aspects either, but for its length, they were very well written.

The real score I would give it would be between 3 and 4, not because it is bad, but because it simply does not have anything that stands out either.

The main couple has a very good and fun dynamic, in my opinion. The romance was incredibly well developed in relation to the time it had to happen.

I... more>> loved the characters, they are easy to like and have very strong and defined personalities, all of them contribute very well to the development of the story. I was able to remember all of them and didn't get bored when they changed the focus from the main couple to the secondary ships or other characters, I even hoped to see them again.

The plot is very simple and direct. It was just a backdrop to fill out the novel a little, since the focus is clearly on the couples. The novel understands this, so there is nothing super well-constructed, like plot twists or huge intrigues, just the simplicity was maintained in a satisfactory way, without unnecessary delays. This makes it very light and fun to read.

If you are looking for something light-hearted to pass the time, without worrying about big intrigues, angst or mysteries, just a cute and funny romance, I recommend this novel to you.

I think it is perfect as a transition novel, like, for those who have just read a big and complex novel and need a break until starting another big adventure, but want to read something in between, this can be the perfect choice to “rest” the mind and spirit (in my case, after crying my eyes out with Nan Chan, I needed a little joy and tranquility hahaha). <<less

It was btw 3 and 4* for me but I leaned more towards 4 in the end. The writing style was a bit unusual, somewhat abrupt, sometimes with strange out of nowhere changes of the scene or maybe it was the translation. Overall not bad, likeable characters, light, short.
