Du Jingyi, bearing the tough identity, married into the Duke’s residence, becoming the sixth daughter-in-law of a prominent family.

Her husband, the highly esteemed war god in the current Daxing Dynasty, was Shang Shaoyu, rumored to be notorious for mistreating women.

Originally, she thought it to be a match made in heaven.

Little did she know, on their wedding night, Shang Shaoyu only managed to lift the bridal veil, leaving with the words “Cezhou is in danger,” and was gone for three years.

Upon his return, he realized the household had gained a new wife. Believing she had endured hardship, he discovered his secluded wife in the Xi Tang Courtyard was thriving better than anyone else.

The Duke’s residence lived in a state of turmoil, but she alone lived a life of luxury and privilege…

Du Jingyi sought nothing more than a peaceful retirement, yet she was forced to navigate the complexities of the inner palace.

From graciously yielding half of her bed to an unexpected presence squeezed into her heart.

Just before she succumbed.

The stern and cold-hearted Grand General, however, smiled with warmth and charm.

Currently reading through the joys of MTL. This is quite a funny and interesting story about a very spoiled daughter of a wealthy family who is sought out to be the bride of an "ancient China alternate" general. Her merchant family can't really say no due to the status of the other family so they marry. On her wedding day, the ML has to go to fight insurgents at the border and is gone for three years. Meanwhile, the FL is being low-key suppressed by the ML's stepmother because (of... more>> course) the stepmother wants her child to become the heir. She'd already pulled this on the ML's older brother's widow whose given up on her son being the actual heir (he's the son of the eldest son) because of all the pushback from servants, etc. ML is the heir now but the readers know that he's merely holding on until his nephew grows up. He's not greedy, just a successful general who wants to go on being a general. When he returns and realizes that his wife and brother's widow were being so badly treated, well, he steps up to protect his family (he really sees himself as more of his deceased mom'smaternal family) and he does. The leads develop a romance appropriate to this kind of arranged marriage so no love-at-first-sight.

Now, if I haven't lost you yet - that is like the first ten chapters. Basically, the dumb relatives keep trying to take the ML and FL leads down a peg and dropping the stone on their own foot. It's very "harem politics" and even some court politics but in reasonable bites. The leads are getting along, making a family, re-creating family bonds, doing some business and so on. And on. Expect every conversation in full detail even if it's just ladies talking about dresses. I'm enjoying it along the lines of The Story of Minglan. Nobody is a complete stereotype but many are foolish in pursuit of money. The novel deserves a complete translation and would make quite a good drama a well. I think it would have a lot of family appeal! Romance is very low key and discreet. <<less
