My Underachieving Seatmate Doesn’t Need Any Comforting

Qiao Shao, who worked hard to stay up all night and study, was first in class — if you count from the bottom.

He Shen, who was able to get a perfect score even when he slept all day, in a rare display of kindness, bought a bottle of drink to comfort his s*upid seatmate.

Then he saw the messages popping up on Qiao Shao’s phone—

Dad: Don’t panic, it’s okay if you didn’t do well in the exam. Dad just ordered a new sports car for you.

Granddad: Grandson, there’s no need to hurry. It’s alright even if you didn’t do well in your exam. Granddad bought a new yacht for you, come and take a break.

Grandpa: Grandson, don’t cry, it’s okay if you didn’t do well in the exam. Grandpa’s billions-worth of properties are all yours.

With a blank expression, He Shen threw his 2.5 Yuan worth bottle of drink into the tr*sh.

Hold your horses! Comfort?

If you like a light and fluffy read, this novel is for you. There are some angst that could make you cry, but it wasn't that heavy. I could say light-moderate angst (if you want a heavy one try the Seeing Eye Dog). My pros for this novel is that it's pretty fluffy and the CP are devoted to each other, and one of my cons is that from start to finish of main ending, it only covers 7 months of relationship (there was a translator note that author changes... more>> the date so MC actually transfer in mid-month of May btw). Reading it looks like you read a novel plot that spanned for years, but the setting was only for a few months, which kind of make it a bit unrealistic for the romance progression and being "we'll only be for each other till we get old". But still read it if you just want some fluffy read.

I also recommend to not read some other reviews or the spoilers. It made me quite conscious of when things should happen. I could really feel the meaning of the chinese idiom, "The emperor doesn't worry but his eunuch does." Lol

I still want to give some comments though about what happened in the novel, so read at your own risk:

Spoiler

There were only that monthly test in May/June, then that final term test in June/July, that MC got last place. I was thinking of the other reviewer's comment saying all of the tests, which made me unconsciously thought that MC failed a lot more or something. His psychological condition was pretty reasonable too, and I really want to point out that reviewer who says that MC was thinking about his mother every time he took the test that's why he always failed, but it wasn't. It was silence from the traumatic experience that can make him have his PTSD episodes aside from the term mother.

ML's character after his grandfather's bday was pretty weird. I almost felt like the subdued/obedient ML was so out-of-character. It made me so uncomfortable till the main ending. It was understandable though because they live on the same house with MC, but I wished the author gave more scenes of ML'S wolfish character when they were back to school or maybe when they were alone together. I really missed that in the later episodes.

There was also that chapter after the final term test, when they finally confessed to each other. ML said I loved you for so long, but it was only for 2 months, hahaha. If only there're a way in real life that you can have a stick-to-one boyfriend that you had only met for a few months and wants to pamper you and get married inmmediately.

Cute, short, and sweet. If you're looking for some fluff, you've come to the right place. This novel isn't overly complicated and there's not much drama. It's just the process of two teenagers falling in love. However, it does seem as if the author changed the trajectory of the novel midway through. Either way, still a good novel if you're looking for something to raise your spirits.

Spoiler

At first it seemed like they were setting on ML to be some miserly kid who was barely scraping by, pinching pennies to buy some medication and food, but all of the sudden he changed into the runaway heir of some big conglomerate?

I like the translated chapters by CG so I braced myself and MTLed the rest. It's surprisingly easy to understand (that or I'm getting used to MTL, lol). I will still read the incoming translated chapters, I probably missed a lot of details I'm not even aware of.

The summary, as most summaries here especially in BL genre, doesn't do the story's justice. The backstories of the MC and ML is a bit more angsty than Fake Slackers but the overall feel is almost the same? Lighthearted and really fluffy most... more>> of the time. Like, in Fake Slackers the main characters are faking their actual intelligence while in this stlry, the main characters are hiding their social status and wealth.

The misunderstandings in this story are actually not exaggerated, lol, like if you're in those situations the conclusions you will also draw are same more or less so they're more hilarious and not frustrating unlike some stories with that plot.

The way the romance progressed is also so satisfying, like we don't have wishy washy characters here, I love MC and ML, okay. <<less

Spoiler

I wanna vote 4 since some chapters were a tad bit short, but since it's Long Qi... OK let's be biased. Lol.

The description was actually cute but the two main characters' story background isn't.

It's a story of being both saved by love and family and/or being ruined by it. (Both this sentence above applies to the main characters life, Qiao Shao and He Shen respectively; and the people that's involve with them.) And a battle with their internal demons and how to overcome them with the power of love. (Kinda sappy but that's what this is really is it about.) Just read it. And you'll probably understand why.

Also, it would be explained why the MC is actually underachieving here. It kinda have to do with his past before he entered his new school. And it's kinda sad *cries*....

I think people who were having internal struggles and anxieties would really understand and empathize with the MC if they tried to read this.

It's good but short lol. I read this for twelve hours non-stop lololol. <<less

.

I love the main character, Qiao Shao (ye). He’s honestly so cute and I was rooting for him the whole book. I love his relationship with his family, especially his father. It’s really heartwarming. As for the male lead, I enjoyed He Shen a lot too. I love his personality and his teasing of the MC
Spoiler

especially when he acts nice and submissive around Qiao Shao’s dad but very “indecent” as Qiao Shao puts it in school. (Indecent doesn’t necessarily mean sexual. Just HS teases him a lot)

[collapse]

I also enjoyed the extras and personally loved the side characters. My favorite is probably Wei Jiayu, especially in the extras 😭 I’m kinda sad
Spoiler

Lou Xiao disappeared near the end. I know it’s to pursue his career but still, it was nice to see He Shen having a friend that isn’t Qiao Shao.

Also, I loved how it was originally QS not believing HS that he was a top student and then after was HS not believed that QS was rich.

Read it some time ago, so I cannot give a lengthy review on it since I forgot quite a lot. BUT I do remember thinking "Why did I spend my time on this?" at the end.

The beginning was not bad, but then I had to force myself to further read it. I hoped the ending would make up for it, but I was let down.

I do not recommend it. 3 stars is the maximum with indulgence I can give it.

Cute and fluffy. A very easy smooth read that I was happy to pick up again despite some personal pauses between chapters (I usually binge read at a go).

Both leads have their own secrets and traumas, which was developed sufficiently. The backstory did feel a little obvious, and a bit like a convenient means to have similar experiences they can connect on, but I saw it as secondary to the main, fluffy plot so it didn’t faze me much, other than a very, very slight cringe.

It’s good as an easy-going,... more>> fluffy dog food novel with a firmer tofu MC, which made it more palatable (lol) cause I can’t stand soft steamed tofu MCs. ML is typical overbearing, overachieving CEO type gong that only has a soft spot for MC. Their romance is believable and the progression was natural. The misunderstanding in the beginning was funny, but got a bit draggy as part of it went on.

For their chemistry, I would give it an almost 5/5. Side characters are good and added to the story. Might re-read. <<less

This was way better than I expected!!

I thought it would be a fun and light read. It was fun, but the story was actually quite interesting and intense. I even cried a little when they found out the truth about their past 😭. Although that part was sad and made me feel a little apprehensive, the rest of the novel was angst-free. A really sweet hurt-comfort love story. Totally recommend this one 💗

Don’t let the dead links message discourage you from reading— it’s still readily available on Chrysanthemum Garden, and it is well worth the read!

I personally don’t tend to read long reviews, so I’ll try keep this short, but when I say this I really mean it: this is one of the all time best BL novels I have ever read.

The characters, plot, writing, etc.. Everything about this is absolutely incredible and I find myself incredibly inspired as a writer every time I decide to re-read it, and I will forever... more>> be the biggest fan.

This novel touches on so many important, unique, and emotional subjects, and every scene is tackled incredibly well. The emotions the writing evokes within each moment are so on point it has me ready to kneel & call the author laoshi to beg for even a sliver of her writing ability.

As a reader, I found myself immediately attached to the unique and realistic characters from the very first read through, and even many times later I still manage to get caught up in the novels flow and accidentally stay up way too late re-reading.

The novel is also incredibly well translated, and the beauty and complexity of the story is still evident despite it being a translation. It’s evident that the translator put a lot of effort into the translation, and I’m grateful to the translator for giving us foreign readers a chance to experience this novel because MLT-ing it just doesn’t work ;;

I would ramble more about the actual plot but A) this is too long already, & B) I don’t want to spoil it, because it really would never hit the same as actually reading the novel.

So, if you’re a fan of BL, a fan of romance, or just a fan of literature in general— this novel is a beautiful work everyone should read at least once. <<less

DNF - June 20, 2023 (Tuesday) 2:17 pm

I debated on giving it 2 stars but then thinking that I read it for so long and did invest time in it, I ended up giving it 3 stars. This novel made me sooooooooo frustrated and angry, I have so many complaints about it!

First of all, why tf the synopsis came so f*cking late?!! It came after 80 chapters and it went totally different from what it seems like it's going to be in synopsis. I'm so angry about it! Idk what... more>> I thought the story is gonna be like but definitely this wasn't it.

The misunderstandings are beyond s*upid and just frustrating! Every chapter there's a new misunderstanding and it gets old very soon. The author dragged the matter of the identity getting exposed for so long that I just gave up in the end. I read till ch 84 then skipped ahead to see when exactly it gets revealed and it gets revealed like after ch 95 or something! WTF!!! I might just spit out blood from all the anger that I'm feeling rn.

I think personally this story could have been some chapters shorter and just get wrapped up nicely. It's long because of all the misunderstandings and the author dragging it out. I can't believe any characters could be so s*upid as to see something right in Front of them and then just make some s*upid excuse for it themselves when they r so close to the truth! F*ck, I'm so frustrated. <<less

I really want to rate it 5 stars but I am dissatisfied with the ending. I want more chapters.

The MC and ML are so sweet. I love how they found redemption and salvation with each other.

The novel is very enjoyable. I love the misunderstandings and how the characters react. I love the heirloom diary. It was so sweet and I also want to do it.

CAME RUNNING TO WRITE THIS AFTER FINISHING JUST NOW

You know, this book did a number on me quite the same way that Erha did: read the blurb and it tells me 'slapstick, cute, light-read that'll make me go 'awwwwww'.'

But what do I get?

... more>> An amazing, well-written book on the effects that trauma can have on people. I laughed so much at the light-hearted, comedy moments here, whilst also having my heart hurt for the MC suffering from PTSD because of what happened to him.

I initially read this because I needed something light-hearted, and didn't except it to have such topics, so maybe a warning for those who're planning on reading it; whilst it is definitely a lot of light-hearted comedy and romance, there is a fair amount of psychological trauma depicted in here. VERY GOOD!!!! <<less

I didn't have much expectation when I started reading but oh my god.. what a good read. I enjoyed it a lot. It made me lose my sleep lol... light-hearted fluff with a splash of angst and I LOVE IT! I'm glad I gave it a try. My only complaint is it has no intimate scenes cuz apparently this is a love story between minors so no steamy thing at all. I don't know why I keep picking innocent novel.. lol /sigh

~ (*v*) ~

The points I really appreciate about this novel are the romance and the general story telling.

The romance is not very dramatic or heart wrenching, it's more natural and healing in nature. Instead of being about immature feelings and youthful insecurities this novel is more about the positive influences love can have on life. Such as giving emotional stability and courage to face the future (Very positiv ♥️)

Aside from the romance this novel has another really well written plot line [tag (Past Trauma) ]. This plot line keeps... more>> the story from becoming a casual, comedic romance and gives it more depth and tension. However, the author did a good job balancing the heavy Trauma topic and the lighthearted school life, creating an exceptional novel. <<less

This made me cry a good 5 times at least while reading it but I'm still unsure if it was from the sadness or my toothache. The ab*se is definitely heavy early on, it takes a good while to get used to it, but the fluff is so worth the wait! It's similar to a lot of novels I've already read, but the translators and authors managed to make it stand out in it's own way. You'll definitely like it if you give it a try!

A very lighthearted novel and a lot of fluff. This is also a journey to healing not only for the main characters but also for the people around them- family and friends.

I just don't understand why some people are hating the MC so much, I mean why?

Spoiler

He was abducted as a child for a year!!! Imagine how traumatic is that? He developed PTSD and even before he was fully healed his mom died and he blamed himself. He wanted to heal completely by having a new environment and persona. He doesn't want to be treated special hence the lies begins. Although, I do not approved of his lying about his dad as a drunkard, but the idea didn't came from him and he just really wanted to have a new start and his dad is very supportive of QS, as long as it will help him, then by all means his dad, grandpa and granddad will do everything/anything.

[collapse]

The backstory of MC and ML about their mother is heart wrenching! Ugh! I cried a lot. Also Lou Xiao's mom, terrible! Good thing they found the right people that helped them heal.

No matter what other reviewers said, I highly recommend this one. If you want a more in-depth review, find * just-add-oil*, she explained it better. So don't missed out on this beautiful novel! <<less

After reading few comments I was very apprehensive and I avoided reading this.... but regret it now.. it's a beautiful story, MC is cute, ML is very doting and all the other characters were nice too... There was no misunderstanding nor angst or such drama.. it was pure fluff after reading the novel I felt whether the comments that I read due to which I held back reading this Beautiful story were not for this novel at all...... MC has been through trauma and even ML had his own problems... more>> and didn't have anyone who could love and care for him and they both heal each other and Love and care for each other.... yeah I do agree that MC could come out of his trauma and nightmares only because of ML when his dad, grand dad and grandpa also loves and dotes on him a lot.. (that part I felt a bit unrealistic... my bad if I am the only one who feels that way) but overall the story was good... there is no smutt and yet you would get butterflies reading this... so just read this don't let the negative comments bother you...

When everyone says this is the sweetest modern story they've read, i'd say, couldn't agree more.

the main couple are so compatible with each other. They have their own flaws and past traumas but through each other, they were able to face those. This is a story about facing your fears and overcoming them. I love the Qiao family so much. Especially Qiao Shao's dad.

Their friends in East High were also good, I was actually thinking if there will be a side CP in the story. It would've been better if... more>> there is. I ship Wei Jiayu x Lou Xia or Wei Jiayu x Chen Su haha. Too bad there isn't, if there is, I'd like to know what story! 👀 <<less
