In the Great Orient, lies the continent called Rodenius.

One day, an unidentified flying object arrived at Qua-Toyne Principality’s airspace. The unidentified flying object defied the Principality’s common sense. But that unidentified flying object was just a harbinger of something even more shocking.

Far to the eastern sea, a group of islands suddenly appeared. The country of the islands called itself: Japan. According to them, their nation had been transported to another world.

Now finding themselves separated from their old world and must survive in the new one, how will Japan interact with the native countries of this world? Will they greet her as a friend or as an enemy?

This is a story of the country called Japan as it was engulfed in the chaotic storm of the world.

Basically, the Japanese version of Island in the Sea of Time.

For clarity: The summoned area of Japan are the four disputed Kuril Islands, Japan Home Islands, and Ryuku Islands

This novel really tries to be a serious-type novel where there's politics, war, and only dead serious characters surrounding an event where the entire country of Japan gets transported to a fantasy world of swords, magic, and Dragons.

It fails. The level of believability and suspension of disbelief of this novel is zero.

What would your reaction be, as a nation, if a vastly technologically advanced civilization teleported next to you with weapons that could wipe you off the face of the earth? Let's take a step back. What would your perspective... more>> be if you observed standards of living far beyond what you could even describe or imagine. Imagine engines -- a magical piece of technology that can make boats propel through water, or carriages through roads seemingly just out of thin air? Or how about making the night sky as bright as day utilizing electricity? Just any of these points would completely make people living in a world of swords and magic have their world turned upside down, let alone actual fighter jets moving at supersonic speeds and aircraft carriers hundreds of times bigger than you've ever seen.

It's always so funny to me when an author like this tries to make it sound like humans don't dominate through shows of force and might. Even if it's not something barbaric like genociding natives with superior technology, at the very least, a show of force is probably the only way Japan could have taken things. Did the author not read up on Matthew Perry's show of gunboat diplomacy on Japan, utilizing his steam-powered locomotive navy ships, many times bigger than Japanese warships at the times, and his bringing of gifts such as a model of a steam locomotive, a sign of respect but a show of America's superior technological prowess at the time. It's shockingly a similar situation Japan was in when dealing with foreign continents such as Qua-Toyne Principality, yet the outcome was all but.

In fact, let's just consider the energy issue of Japan if this were to happen. The least the novel could do was to provide a surface level explanation that "all trains in Japan stopped, all electricity is set to emergency only, " yet the novel doesn't even do that, deeming to actually just show Japan functioning as normal despite relying on 80% fossil fuel imports for their energy and importing 97% of their oil. I love how the novel focuses on the food self sustaining issue, but energy is just as big a one and it's never mentioned.

Finally, we have the actual meeting of Japan diplomats and Qua-Toyne Principality diplomats. It really is simply: "we met, Japan is kind of fearsome, and we were awed by the technology." That's it! It's crazy. There's no character from Qua-Toyne Principality that is obsessed with learning the new technology Japan has to offer, and no one on Japan's side obsessed with learning how magic or dragon ecology work. It simply is boring and surface level diplomacy between two countries that somehow treat each other on equal footing despite Japan having such an overwhelmingly large military superiority that having such an equal terms treaty would be impossible in reality.

This sort of worldbuilding would be what I expected if it was about some slice of life fantasy about a random guy opening a modern day cafe shop in a world of swords and magic. Yet, this novel is tries to use such flimsly worldbuilding on a "realistic" country isekai. You might think I am nitpicking at these details, and they really would be in a typical isekai, but if the novel is focusing on politics, economics, supply distribution, and warfare, then it better at least be honing on those attributes, and I don't believe that it does. <<less

The entire country still do business as usual? There is no consequence from being cut off from the rest of the modern world?

Just to name a few:

  • Citizens don't panic? This is doomsday level event, people would want answers, solutions, there are people who will want to come back to the old world. They would not be like "oh well, I guess we live in this world now".
  • WHY WOULD YOU LEAK YOUR MILITARY SECRETS EVERYWHERE??? It's a new world and all of your military technologies or even civilian technologies should be kept extremely secretive. You don't invite the ambassadors to an airshow for god's sake. And why would there be airshow, the country should be freaking out right now instead of doing meaningless entertainments, and surely top priority is to save fuel now that you can't import any at least for a few years.
  • Whatever happened to the tourists who happened to be in Japan the instance of world transfer? What about Japanese people who were abroad? What about fishermen at sea? Airplanes? Do they get transferred with the island by some weird mechanism and all the foreigners are left stranded in the sea or do they just accept their fate now?
In conclusion the citizens of Japan are literal cardboard cutouts now. Nobody has any emotion anymore. We can only see them... more>> once at the scene where the woman gets hit and that's it. Their reaction to magic is even inadequate. It's a freaking breach of the law of nature people, it should be marveled at and studied intensively. <<less

EDIT: This review was written for the WN version, at a point where the WN and LN series were sharing the same entry, but the WN version (which has an active ongoing translation) has since been split into a separate page.

Review

In case an actual review is obligatory, this is an interesting technological gap series in which the entire nation of Japan (including their entire military and all their infrastructure) is suddenly isekai'd. It's somewhat unique in that the POV is almost never the Japanese people, it's almost entirely from the... more>> perspective of the people from the isekai itself. <<less

I feel that it is a bit too early for a review but I would give mine anyway.

If you liked Gate then I think that you will enjoy this too. The premise is really similar and the only difference is that this time, the entire Japanese archipelago got transported to another world. As usual, common sense breaking ensues.

As of now, there's still no clear protagonist to the story but reading the different point of views of both the locals and the Japanese gives an enjoyable feel. The only problem is... more>> the very few chapters!

In summary, I recommend reading this after it piles up a few more chapters and in the meantime, just read Gate if you still haven't because I believe you will enjoy this more if you already read Gate. <<less

This is a really interesting story and the best I have read in a long time. I really love the concept, the fact that the POV's are from the natives of the New World and not from those who were transported. The writing is solid and very interesting. The give and take mechanism, the common sense involved, the clashing of cultures and intermingling of various values is very interesting. It has infinite possibilities. I am really interesting in reading more!

Add to that, from the text, it seems that other countries... more>> have been transported here like Mu 12, 000 years ago or that strange new country called the "Eight Empire". They might have gotten some other worldly boost too. <<less

I was really excited to know that someone was translating the LN of the novel. Hopefully the translation team will continue translating when the new chapter of the manga comes out (or it would be better if they speed up to keep up with WN's progress).

In terms of content, I think the novel suits me well, although it would be better if the author described his Japanese opponents more cunningly and cunningly: when reading WN, it was really annoying to see them being so simple and illogical.

I tell you what, this story is an absolute banger!

If you like Guns vs. Swords, then this is a novel I can recommend to you.

Basically, Japan (the whole country and islands) gets teleported to a world of Swords and Magic.

So far it hasn't disappointed with the use of the plot's premise, and the interactions between the nations are much believable. Also I'd like to mention a review that I read here on why does the Japanese people were acting normally even though they were transported to another world:

Spoiler

When the Qua-Toyne diplomats went to Japan.

[collapse]

Spoiler

Do you really expect constant anarchy throughout the country? I mean people will get tired of panicking at some point and look for ways to actually survive. Did you forget to about the fact that there is a government to manage the situation, and calm the public populace? I mean it's already mentioned they've been there for a while. So wouldn't it make sense that the calming down the public part happened before the patrol operations of the JSDF?

[collapse]

Anyway that's enough ranting.

Personally, I like the world building through the reports and dialogues of the characters.

The reactions of the characters in the story is quite amusing and is important, since this is what most people come for in these types of stories.

The descriptions of the battles are well written. And also the translations for this novel is great! Shout out to Yukkuri!

Anyways I can't really say or judge the whole thing right now since it's only 3 chapters right now, but for what I have read, it's great. Do give it a try. <<less
