It’s impossible for an atheist to become a saintess!

I merely expressed my thoughts on a ridiculous novel, and I ended up reincarnating into that story… in the exact scenario I found most absurd.

Ugh, this is too much!

Before we get started, I have to address a misconception in the reviews. Anna's reluctance to leave the church isn't as simple as it might seem; she wasn't entirely honest with her feelings. Spoiler Warning. ... more>>
Spoiler

Anna's hesitation on leaving wasn't solely because of some suitors; that was more of an excuse. The truth is that, despite the stifling environment, the church is her HOME—a place filled with her loved ones who genuinely care for her. It's her family. However, her insistence on leaving is due to her desire to live a normal life; being a saintess is a heavy title to carry after all. Moreover, she feels unworthy of the title and her powers, believing that others are more deserving as she didn't work as hard as others for her faith yet she still was given this amazing power. Despite these doubts, she deeply loves the church. In fact, she even mentions feeling relieved once she found a reason to stay. You discover this about her if you read between the lines... or just read beyond the 1st chapter.

"The Indomitable Human Will Triumphs Over The Cruel Indifference Of The Universe." is a phrase that, to me, perfectly encapsulates this novel. Beneath the surface of this wonderful adventure story—one that showcases triumph over evil in tense engaging fantastical scenarios—lies a heartwarming celebration of compassion and love. It lifts humanity onto the stage, pushing pride aside and bringing hope and empathy into the limelight against overwhelming odds. The romance and chemistry between the two leads will make your heart flutter, as their deep faith and devotion for one another shine beautifully in the way they openly express their affection through words and action.

Our main protagonist, Anna, has conflicts of her own and has beliefs she stands firmly upon yet despite that, she easily sets them aside, especially her pride, if it meant doing good. Her selflessness isn't the only thing that's exceptional about her though, it's also how she eventually comes to term with her conflicts and her acceptance of it that makes her even bloom more beautifully as a character.

What makes her shine even more is her relationship with Chae-eun, one of the novel's highlights. Their banter is always entertaining, and the way they treat each other so delicately with great care is just so endearing. They're not shy to openly communicate their mutual appreciation and care through actions to each other. Even though they haven't yet expressed their romantic feelings, the warmth they show towards each other is palpable. Even when there was a misunderstanding, their affection towards each other never ceased.

Honestly, Chae-eun's attentiveness towards Anna combined with her stubbornness helped push Anna forward. Though she is playful and loves to tease Anna, she remains patient and understanding in serious moments. Even though she has a lot of personal baggage, it only fuels her growth and highlights her caring nature and heroic tendencies. Honestly, both of them have such a positive effect on each other, encouraging each other to grow for the better.

Another thing to mention is how the church is portrayed. Typically, novels depict it as entirely evil, but here it's portrayed in a mostly positive yet realistic light. It actually mentioned some issues like s*xual ab*se in the church. There are also Christian themes reflected in Anna, in her faith, values and how it's connected to the so-called god in the story. It's refreshing to see these Christian themes used thoughtfully. Her powers, too, have an interesting concept tied to her faith, providing a solid reason for their strength.

As the story progresses, the world and characters might seem simple at first but slowly but surely, it unravels deeper layers, drawing me in even further. There's moments when a character initially gives a superficial reason for their actions, only to reveal a deeper motivation later. For instance, the reason why Anna dresses the way she does is surprisingly believable and nuanced: SPOILER WARNING

Spoiler

Initially, the only reason given was that she's an atheist and rebellious, but the truth runs deeper. When Anna was 15, her veil fell off on the way to see a patient who behaved inappropriately, grabbing her hand. She shook him off, and he grew angry, got arrested, and blamed her for 'her body developing early' and not dressing properly (not wearing the veil). In retaliation, she chose to dress in a way that defied norms. Now, she says she dresses as she does because it's comfortable, pretty, and suits her.

[collapse]

It's simple details like these that make the characters feel grounded and relatable, especially since this is something I've heard happen in real life.

I highly recommend reading this novel. I haven't finished it yet, but I truly appreciate the depth of emotion and care put into the relationship between the leads. Sure, each arc provides action packed scenes that elevate our protagonist, showcasing her prowess and righteousness, leaving people in awe. But for me, the heart of this novel is the humanity that exudes our protagonist and the way she treats each scenario with overflowing love and grace. The author isn't just focused on making her seem cool; they're also trying to evoke genuine emotion in readers by treating the characters as real people with feelings.

My score is 5/5

Also, There is no harem, only pure romance between two people. <<less

Κύριε ἐλέησον (Kýrie, eléison, Lord, have mercy) "

But the tax collector stood at a distance, not daring to raise his eyes to heaven, but beat his breast and said, 'O God, have mercy on me, a sinner!' Kyrie eleison!) " - Gospel of Luke 18:13 Kyrie eleison is a song of mercy. This is a song that appeals to God's mercy before a Catholic mass. In Christianity, including Catholicism, the core of the doctrine is the confession of helplessness in the face of human sin and the greatness of God's... more>> mercy.

But why am I introducing this? Well, unlike the other generic "mass-produced" hero vs. saint novels that you may end up finding out there, some that can't even be considered real heroes or saints with questionable personalities and others that it's not strange to call that an evil god.

"No, How Can an Atheist Become a Saintess!?" is different, having a greater depth about religiosity, with Anna, the "Unofficial" Saint Protagonist often making comments considered "strange" about the existence of god in that world, saying that he is not omnipotent and omnipresent, however, he is an entity "similar" that performs miracles, gifts and mercy on people, this inside a church and she even managed to send a letter to a Cardinal, this she, being an "official" candidate to sainthood denying the existence of god, which created a huge mess that almost sent her to be acquired for Heresy, but that was resolved with much insistence with her "Superior Nun Godmother" and fortunately our protagonist was not excommunicated.

Anna often had fragile logic and strange ideas throughout the chapters, and when divine power shone involuntarily like a halo, she pushed it away as if it were something uncomfortable initially, this when she does not believe, or rather thinks she does not believe. Well, do you know the "Superior Nun Godmother" that I mentioned earlier? Her Biggest Supporter has a different opinion, saying that "Sister Anna has a more sincere faith than anyone she has ever met and that she keeps denying it to herself, for some reason." Anna, the Transmigrated Protagonist thought that she needed for some reason to deny the existence of that goddess who forcibly transmigrated her just because she made a negative comment saying that the Webnovel she read, with its worldbuilding, character development, and plot, would be better without religion, a rather shocking personal opinion, by the way. However, no matter how strong your beliefs or even your "atheism" are, standing by and ignoring someone in danger - especially when I have the means to help - would be, in the protagonist's words, "just... way wrong. It would be the wrong answer, plain and simple. So all I can do is choose the best answer." She gives up her pride and part of her beliefs like atheism, which not even she considers to be fixed, unshakable and certain and which may even change in the future, in order to save others. After all, according to her, swallowing a little of her pride and her atheism to save someone else's life, what's the problem?

Can you tell what she thinks about not expressing her faith, or following the scriptures, if she doesn't do it why is she in the Church? Even though she can join the 10 Great Hunter Guilds, relax and only heal hunters exclusively when they come to her, earning millions doing almost nothing, but she doesn't do it. After all, for the Protagonist, Divine Power comes from the Goddess. She is not a magician who diligently studied magic all day and even spent the night awake doing lessons, nor an alchemist in her equations, much less a knight warrior who practiced with a sword all day for years, while rolling in the mud, in battles between life and death. All the divine power she gained was effortless, which is quite powerful after all, but still, Anna does not see it as her own power. She can choose who to use it on - like the wounded and sick - to heal them, but how could she charge money for a power that is not even hers?

It can be said that throughout the Chapters, you will find an impressive depth of true Christianity, and for some reason, it must have been inspired and referenced after reading the Bible, probably? In any case, it is a Novel that brings new and different winds from any other Webnovel you read out there, so I recommend it. <<less

I like the premise but this is just not a good story. I always struggle with stories where the main character is given a personality/circumstances in which the author needs to find a reason to force them to participate in the story, but it's not a theme that causes me to immediately pass on something because I've seen several stories that do a good job with that concept.

This is not an example of a good execution of this trope. Obviously with a MC who's singular defining personality trait is that... more>> they are an atheist, the author will need to come up with a great reason for them to be forced to be a saintess. However, the reason the author presents as why the MC remains in the church in full opposition to her most strongly held ideology was so dumb I knew I wouldn't be able to move past it and there's no chance I will enjoy the story.

Spoiler

The whole main reason she refuses to leave the church is that she knows there are a few guys who like her that have resisted confessing because she's off limits as a nun, but who plan to confess to her when she leaves the church. Her supervisor points out she can simply reject the confessions and never see them again, but to the MC the idea of a man literally just speaking a confession to her is so disgusting she is willing to remain a member of a religion she has been actively trying to escape for 15 YEARS. Just because of one awkward conversation she would have to have, she is willing to fundamentally alter the direction of her life in a way that is diametrically opposed to everything she stands for.

[collapse]

It's insane to me that this was the best excuse the author could come up with, and (at least for me) completely ruins any potential this story may have had. <<less

The title doesn't quite match the novella.

Strictly speaking, the main character is not an atheist. She knows that God exists, and even talks to him from time to time.

The church in this work is suspicious. The orphans raised by the church grow up isolated from the rest of the world and are completely unadapted to life outside the church. The nuns have a huge number of restrictions. And a girl can be made a saint without the girl's consent, and at the same time imposing even more restrictions on her.

So,... more>> this story tells about the escape of a true saint from a sect. <<less

I didn’t think I would find this so interesting but it definitely is. Anna, an atheist in a world of magic and fantasy wonder, is raised in a church that raise children. Anna knows there’s an entity above that “uses her body as a vassal to heal” but she doesn’t classify it as god. Her original character in the novel is a saintess that gets in the way of the og protagonist and his childhood friend so she’s trying her best to get away from all that.

She doesn’t believe in... more>> the entity known as god but she’s willing to swallow her pride and belief to save another, afterall, pride can’t heal wounds. I really like her personality and her interactions of Ria, her knight.

Recommended! It’s a fun read for me who don’t care too much about the specifics <<less
