In a world where power dictates fate, Princess Ines of a fallen kingdom is ensnared by Ryan, a captivating yet ambitious captor. Despite his efforts to dominate her spirit, Ines resists, challenging his every move with a fiery defiance that slowly transforms disdain into obsession. As their tumultuous dynamic unfolds, a brush with death shifts everything. Ryan, confronted by the depth of his feelings, faces a choice that could redefine them both.

Their story of power, resistance, and the unforeseen force of love questions whether hearts hardened by ambition can truly change.

Will Ines’ near escape bring them closer, or will it be the catalyst that tears their world apart?

I'm hella disappointed. Like SUPER DUPER disappointed. I thought I finally found a novel that would be different from your typical Korean angst novels. But alas, I was severely, ruthlessly disappointed. Do not believe the description or the title. This is just a marketing strategy to attract readers. The novel with angst are all the same in the inside anyway.

The novel had your typical Korean angst novels start. The ML was cold towards FL, wanting to seduce her for his personal gains and whatnot. The first 50 to 80 chapters... more>> felt like the mixture of 'Cry, even better if you beg' and 'My lover's personality is a little bit strange'. The next chapters were where the real story started.

I was very happy when the FL was almost about to be engaged with the 2nd ml. I was glad that I finally found something where the FL isn't a masochist and wouldn't accept the ML no matter what. But the author ah, killed my hope.

The 2nd ML was the one on whom the FL had a crush on (almost) so imagining their future together wasn't difficult. But I was surprised when the author made the FL turn a 180 and made her fall in love again with the s*umbag ml. It was clearly seen how desperately the author tried to get the FL and ML together, even though they weren't supposed to be.

And the child ah, I don't know what should I say about it. The author, like any other Korean author played his/her part well and forced the FL to come to ML through the child.

The most pitiful one in the whole novel was Celia. The poor girl didn't even do anything and got caught up in the main protagonists ' mess. Played her extra part well, though.

Anyway, this novel is nothing new. Your typical s*umbag ML regretting his wrongdoings after his wife dies/escapes and the masochist FL accepting him as if he's the last person in the world. You should better read, 'My lover's personality is a little bit strange' where the ML isn't as s*umbag as this one. And 'The devil who breaks my neck' (Warning! This novel is super duper angsty. Don't read if you have high blood pressure!)

Note for the author: If you are reading this, come out. I promise I won't hack you to death. 🙂 <<less

BEWARE of SPOILER

I'm just going to spoil almost everything because that's the only way for me to make sense of the story after doing a long journey of MTL-ing. Some parts maybe wrong because... MTL-ing.

Spoiler

Two countries, Lezan and Genare were at war, with Lezan at the losing end. Genare wanted a marriage between the two countries to promote harmony, of course, it was also a disguise as a mockery because their candidate was Ines, the illegitimate daughter of Genare's second princess. Marrying Ines to the Crown Prince could be seen as an insult because illegitimate children were not taken kindly during that era. Rayon Eleanor, the Grand Duke of Lezan and second in line for the throne took over the responsibility. He also hated illegitimate children because his parents were mu*dered by his illegitimate uncle, without knowing the uncle was ab*sed by said parents.

Ines had her secret. She made a pact with a demon, Kian, to escape her life and the pact stated that she would give up 10 years of her life to Kian. They both end up in the countryside where Ines becomes assistant to an old herbalist. Rayon managed to track down Ines and brought her to his mansion. They got married and their son, Caeser, a spitting image of Rayon, was born.

After six years, Ines knew her time was almost up. Apart from the pact with Kian, she was also poisoned by Rayon's aunt. Rayon's aunt wanted all the good things to go to her son but, was too afraid to do anything toward Rayon himself as he was Genare's War God. So, her targets were Ines and Caeser. Ines made Rayon promise to treat Caeser better before ending up vomiting blood in front of him.

Rayon, feeling guilty for not believing Ines and probably also realizing that he loved her, kept her body in a room. After days, he agreed to give her a proper burial. No one was grieving for Ines. Most of them attended the funeral mainly to discuss Rayon's second marriage. Rayon canceled the funeral and again, kept Ines's body. At the same time, he kept seeing her apparition. He also punished a maid and his aunt for the poisoning case. While doing the investigation and punishing the evildoers, Rayon sort of forgot he had a son. Kian took over as Caeser's caretaker.

Because of the pact, Ines's soul did not disintegrate. Kian managed to transfer her soul to the body of a sickly noble lady. This part was mostly lost in MTL translation. So bear with me. Anyway, Rayon somehow recognized Ines in a new body. His groveling did not work because Ines had had enough. Ines's soul managed to transfer to her own body, partly thanks to Rayon because he never buried her. Ines decided to move to the countryside. Kian and Caeser followed. And that was practically the end of the main plotline.

Fireworks for everyone who was rooting for Ines to not accept Rayon back in her life. But wait, the author decided to write a side story.

As Caeser grew up, Ines realized that he liked swordsmanship. So occasionally, Caeser will return to Rayon's mansion to learn swordmanship. Rayon took the chance to also visit Ines from time to time. They became tea drinking buddy. Ines was still weak and sickly. During the coldest day, while Caeser was at Rayon's place, Ines somehow transported herself to his mansion. Long story short, they reconciled. Why would you do that author?

The story opens with Ines's death and then proceeds to detail a flashback that leads to that moment. Kind of like the Remarried Empress. It got back on track around the 40-ish or 50-ish chapter where we visited Ines' death. So, start MTL-ing from around that chapter if you want to escape the angst. Also, avoid the side story if you cannot forgive Rayon. Lol. Oh, and Rayon took over the pact from Ines. He had a much longer lifespan than Ines. So, losing 10 years was nothing for him.

It sounded so interesting since I love angst and the first chapter is riveting! I was so excited to know what happens next, until I realized that the next chapters would be a flashback (can I call it that since you already know what's going to happen).

I love angst, but I want to get to the story already! It's such agony to read the past in a non-fast forward way when you know it's going to be painful anyway (like the Remarried Empress-like we know she's going to remarry but... more>> then it happens at like chapter 90 in the manhua) <<less
