The Daoist Lord Xie Wuwang has peerless beauty, top notch cultivation, and holds influence over the three realms. He is known as the ruler of the world.

Those enamoured with his beauty are countless.

Everybody knows there are no feelings between him and his daoist companion, Ning Qingqing. He stays with her only because of the many years they’ve spent together. It was simply like how he had no need to throw away his swords or magical treasures.

That was, until the day he killed her mushroom.

That was the only gift he gave her. The last bit of warmth in her heart.

She gave up completely, deciding to let go.

That night, thrown into turmoil by her feelings, she took herself to be that dead mushroom.

This wasn’t the first time she used divorce to threaten him.

Xie Wuwang thought Ning Qingqing would calm down after a night’s sleep and regret it just like before, finding some excuse to pretend yesterday never happened.

But he never expected that instead of finding an excuse, he would find a plot of damp soil where she buried herself with only her head poking above the ground…

Xie Wuwang: “?!?!”

I enjoyed the beginning very much as painful as it was. Watching a clearly unhealthy relationship fray at one end, waiting to see the string snap and the ramifications was very tense. And then the tension just leaves.

Ning Qingqing is so painful to watch in her seemingly one-sided love for the ML, you want to root for her to throw him away and become her own person. You want to see her grow and claw her way to her own happiness independent of ML. But then as the summary says,... more>> she takes herself to be the dead mushroom and it's like a completely separate character.

Ning Qingqing at the start is a woman filled with turmoil and desperate. She's hopeless and deeply wounded emotionally she's basically a shell of herself. Mushroom Ning Qingqing is childish and full of innocence and reminiscent of herself when ML first met her. I really wanted to read about the first version of her learning to live again, skimming through some chapters Mushroom!MC seems to be the main version? Idk if the author will resolve the dispute since they are the same person but it feels cheap to have ML learn to love MC like this and even more cheap that MC doesn't even get a chance to properly grow from her shattered self.

So this story is really amazing. Had to read it as MTL but it's incredibly coherent for MTL and it's a really touching story. Yes, the ML was a jerk in the beginning, yes they ended up together in the end, but it's actually really different compared to all of the stories out there where man is s*umbag, woman takes back s*umbag despite horrific ab*se and they have in inexplicable romance out of nowhere. In this case it's more misunderstandings and not ab*se and he really pays for it... more>> in the end. Truthfully, the fault was on both sides.

It's portrayed pretty realistically for the kind of characters they are - he's the strongest cultivator in the world and has taken up responsibility for overseeing the human world and keeping the world of cultivators in check from each other and monsters. She's his partner with average cultivation. She's his dao companion, he truly cares for her but refuses to admit it and he's a great leader.. But not a great husband. His actions do show his love for her, but honestly she has an inferiority complex and he doesn't explain his actions at all or how he doesn't touch the women that show up around him- this leads to tragic consequences and he really learns what had and lost.

Spoiler

As this creates a heart demon in her after she's exposed to a magic poison. She dies once, but is saved by a safeguard he left for her (he had one chance for a rebirth, which he instead gave to her without telling her) but ultimately the issue still isn't resolved and while she doesn't die the second time, she ends up being affected and losing her memory. After this is a struggle, as she's not interested in a relationship with him and he's the one chasing her. Meanwhile they work together to save the demonization/poison that's infected her and also a lot of others to find out who's behind the conspiracy.

It explores a lot of their issues to develop the relationship.. He has incredible work burden looking after the cultivator world but never explains the reasons he couldn't see her and she feels too inferior to go see him even if she would be welcome. There was also a prophecy that she would cause him terrible pain and pull out his dao bones, but he's not willing to take action first so he's guarded against her, but in the end pulls out the bones himself to save her. He doesn't want to admit he loves her, but still gives her his only chance for rebirth, so she has a second life instead of him. She limits herself to try to fit into his life and stifles herself. Ultimately it's a story of growth for both of them, where they each realize how much the other person has done for them and he admits how much he loves her and she admits that the woman who loved him blindly is dead and she needs to love herself before she loves him

[collapse]

Their relationship will never be the same afterwards, but it will be a healthier happier one. <<less

Honestly pretty good! It MTLed reasonably well.

The review:

The first 20ish chapters are ROUGH. ML is an unbelievable, unredeemable jerkwad. He treats FL like tr*sh and it doesn't feel like the author will ever be able to whitewash him. It's heavy and depressing and really hard to get through. Once the FL "turns into" a mushroom, the story gains a lot of much-needed levity and slowly starts to explore both sides of their 300-year relationship.

What I really liked about this novel was that the ML's actions weren't all handwaved away --... more>> sure, some things were shown to be results of misunderstandings and extenuating circumstances unknown to the FL, but there were also things he did that he revisits and thinks, "That was messed up and I shouldn't've behaved that way." As he does this, he goes through a great journey of personal growth. He always loved the FL but was emotionally stunted and very rigid about feelings, so he hurt her. By the end, he beats himself up more about his past actions than she does and puts a ton of thought into how a husband should act.

As for the FL, I really enjoyed her growth journey as well! Once she "becomes" a mushroom, she returns to her original temperament that 300 years of marriage had beaten out of her (previous reviewer thinks this is a cop out, but she does get back her old feelings so I disagree).

But, as she comes to realize, she allowed that to happen. The ML feel in love with her brightness and tenacity but due to her feelings of inferiority, she gave up her sense of self and neither of them noticed it (frog in boiling water) or would have been emotionally capable of dealing with it even if they had.

With the mushroom-ing, however, she finds her own path and realizes that in the best relationships, both people are striving independently so no one is solely dependent on the other. With this, they become true partners, both in solving the grand conspiracy (because of course there's!) and in their relationship.

I'm giving this 4 stars not 5 because FL is a liiittle bit Mary Sue and the ML came around to remorse a little earlier than I thought made sense (although my emotions were grateful he did). It was an enjoyable read though, and I really liked some of the humor. Give it a go!

TL;DR: Jerkwad ML treats FL like garbage. Now she's a mushroom (Or is she?). Humor, ML regrets, and personal growth! Worth a read. <<less
