That night, I listened to the hymns till dawn, not for serenity, but to seek a sliver of your soul;

That month, I flipped through all the scriptures, not for enlightenment, but to touch the pages where your fingers once lingered;

That year, I knelt on the grounds, my head embracing the dust, not to pay obeisance to the Gods, but to feel the warmth you left behind;

That life, I wandered through ten thousand great mountains, not in search of an afterlife, but to cross paths with you –

Gao Fei, will you believe that I lived through this night, this day, this year, and this lifetime, only to hold your hand and accompany you in this journey of life?

I think this is even more sad than the mulberry song. In the mulberry song the ML knew he was sad and grieving whereas the ML in this novel doesn't.

You know the feeling where you cry so much that you just want to rate it low because that's how you feel? As a person that doesn't cry in normal situations but cries bc of stories, tears man, tears.

This is a well written tragedy, so much that I hate its able to make me cry. I really love the character development of the MC and ml. The denial and the acceptance of the two really broke my heart.

Madmen

He Yujin; Gao Fei. One was insane while she lived, while the other was forced to insanity as he lived.

Their love ended before it could begin. He Yujin will never know that, even without realising it, Gao Fei had already come to love her, and Gao Fei will never have the chance to tell her that, it turns out, his love for her was no less than hers for him.

He Yujin loved too much; Gao Fei loved too late.

And Gao Fei paid the price for his pride and stubbornness. He led a colourless life without her. He walked on the streets, looking at all the other couples, and felt like an outsider to the happiness others enjoyed. Even as he searched, even as his marriage crumbled, still, he did not find an excuse for him to say, it's over, to end his life, all because He Yujin wished for him to be happy

That moment, I ascended to the Heavens and became immortal, not for an eternal life, but to watch over you for a lifetime of peace and

happiness..

........

There is one kind of love

I love you, and this has nothing to do with you, but I love you.

There is another kind of love

I hate you, and I will never love you, but I will follow you in your death.

I cried so much, but I'm really happy I read this novel. I really recommend it to everyone.

But the I read his side of the story and surprisenly I started to understand where he was coming from but I still feel he was to prideful and hard headed... Aah but that last paragraph.

MANNY SPOILER READ AT YOUR OWN RISK!!! (sorry I couldn't put the spoiler thingy I just open this account so I'm not really good at it ???? I tried but I couldn't)

Spoiler

I really hated the ML when I read the FL POV and when

his POV started and he started to live his life and move on I was all like "Oh hell no!! ? he actually is moving on so easy WTH! He trully never Loved the MC P. S. especially when he wanted to have a baby with the new wife (it made cry after remember in how the MC wanted to give him a baby, well to tie him more to her (a bit cray cray) but then she discover she couldn't have kids that broke my heart ??

BUT then this

"Before He Yujin died, she said that she only wished for me to lead a peaceful and happy life, and I had lived my life carrying out her wishes.

I remarried; worked hard at work; did not think of her; did not seek death.

I tried my best to live in happiness –

But a traffic accident was not something within my control.

Nor could I have known that I would divorce, just as I could never have known that I would meet with a traffic accident.

So, when she met me once again, she could not blame me. She must not blame me.

Slowly, my tears began to fall. I saw He Yujin's face, the face which I had been waiting for several years. The Heavens knew how many times I yearned to reach out, using my five fingers to touch her face. Gently, just like a lover, caressing her face.

If I met her, no, I would definitely meet her, for I had done so much just to meet her –

We would cross paths in the skies, and within the endless clouds, I would say, 'Hi, He Yujin. I'm Gao Fei, let's be friends.'

Then, I would become her husband.

If she had already found a new relationship there, I would use every means possible to destroy her relationship and family to become her husband.

My story with He Yujin began to end here..... "]

I seriously came to hate and then loved both characters especially the ML, when you read his part you kind of get hints of how much he misses her and of how he started to go insane and even imagining the MC and they're past life & how maybe how they're life would of been. If only they had started their relationship in a different way or if they had talked it out aaah! But the if's or perhaps dont exit and if they had existed in this novel then this novel wouldn't of be as great as it is and the author did an amaizing job portraying such a heart wrenching and bitter sweet story of a love or better put, of lovers that miss their time to love....

I would also like to thank the translator she did an amazing job, translating this it was really really well written and the things she wrote on the last chapter where my exact sentiments of understanding of this story which was very tragic and its sad to read how they could of but they didn't have a happy ending since I'm a very childish person I will imagine they do reunite in heaven or in a different life and they have their happy ending... I wrote to much I'ts just I can't move on from this novel jet (even do I just read it last night, I will definitely reread this novel again and again in the future)

Ferdowsi was an Iranian poet who lived more than 1500 years ago. His Shahname is an epic poem known to many. There is a story of a hero named Rostam who fight a battle with a young hero named Sohrab. The way Rostam somehow cheated an killed sohrab is a very disturbing read. Everyone on the battle field knew that Rostam is the father of Sohrab, yet no one told them, so they could kill each other. Yet when rostam realized that he killed his own son, he hug his... more>> corps and cry and it is when the magic of poem is working. Just 10 verse before we hated Rostam for killing Sohrab, yet 10 verse after we sympathize with him and grieve with him.

When I was reading this short story, I hated her so much, I told myself she deserve it, she is unforgivable, but I knew like when I forgave Rostam, I can forgave her.

There’s just something about this novel. No matter how many times I read it I get fully engrossed in it and the feelings are always same & strong. It has been more than five years since the first encounter and I still come back to it regularly. Also the translation is really good which greatly contributed to give this effect.

I'm sorry but until the end I dislike HY. More like hatred than dislike. If I was GF, I will hate her to death. Even when she died, the sadness only come because I'm still a human. Yes, I still pity her but mostly I feel hatred toward her. It's also because until the end she didn't realize what she did wrong and no regret no redemption. She's like the tr*shy ML in every romance story where he have happy ending with the FL after torture her mentally but change... more>> the gender and no redemption arc because redemption arc only for man 🙄

JJ is the real victim here. Her choice to abort their baby is for the good. The mother will suffer from trauma caused by the father's mental illness. It will end worse if they keep the baby. She knows she won't survive if the father of her baby won't be there for them. Like, he literally hallucinating about his dead wife and deny to have one, also refuse to get help. Don't you dare to blame her to chose abortion. Not everyone ready to be a single mother when the pregnancy still in first trisemester and with sick ex husband.

GF is... sigh. Kinda feel bad for him because he's blamed for everything more than HY is. I like his character the most, not because he's the nicest but how he's written. I hage him but there's things that tolerable frrom him. Also what he got in later chapter isn't karma but more like trauma HY gave. Again HY left something bad for people around her.

I feel like many people here have similar mindset. They tolerate the main character wrong doing so much that they forgot the chatacter's sin. And then pick other character to put blame on.

Overall, the writting is great, the translation too. If it's not because the writing, I don't think I can feel anu sadness from HY <<less

This novel is great and the angst make me suffocated. The ML never admit that he love the FL but people around him can see that. It is a love-hate relationship and the unfortunate one is the ml. For me, the FL love is too unbearable, too suffocating which is burning the ml. He is stuck in her eternal love.I also think that the ML actually suffering from stockhalm syndrome... My favorite part is when ML choose to have a new life with his first love which is not a... more>> cliche plot for me. And he do that because of FL wishes for him to lead a normal life.. but lastly he can't bear it.. his feeling for FL is too strong, making it impossible for him to lead a normal life. Gao fei is a pitiful character, I found this novel from a list of shitty male leads but he’s not shitty at all. I feel sad that he felt guilty and he thinks he should have treated hujin better when he doesnt owe her anything. If anything, I wanted him to continue hating her. Although I never rlly understand if he truly loved her or was it pity or just a sense sadness of emptiness he felt when he found out hujin was gonna die. Even how much you hate... more>> someone, knowing their days are numbered, and the person who u spend everyday with for 2 years is gonna die soon, I feel like anyone who’ve been sad and sobbing. I truly felt pity for him even after the second marriage. Although he was definitely too stubborn for his own good. But what he needed wasnt a psychiatrist or someone calling him a crazy man for hallucinating and mourning over the death of his past wife. He needed support, a therapist to actually move on. I feel pissed seeing jiajing calling him crazy and aborting their child without telling him. Even if he wasnt able to give u the love u wanted, that was never a good thing to do. The child isnt just jiajing’s but gao fei’s as well. He truly was a pitiful character.

as for hujin, I dont hate her but I dont like her either. I felt pity she had to die, but other than that, I cant see her as a relatable character. She was obsessive, selfish and shameless. I wished she would thought of gao fei’s burdens after she dies. And at least tell him she’s sincerely sorry, that’s all I wanted for her to say. Not only she ruined traumatised this man’s life but also paralysed another man’s leg. She’s truly a flawed character but she isn’t completely unlikeable as she is full with self awareness.

overall 4/5 it’s a great story, didnt feel rushed, the storytelling is good. I liked gaofei’s after story a lot. <<less

first of all, this isn't taken place on ancient china. The settings is on modern times.

This novel is heart wrenching. :D I was crying all through out. It is so painful, so painful I was in tears for almost two hours.

tbh, I disliked He Yujin (mc) at first. Pitied Gao fei but then, I also disliked Gao Fei later on. I disliked everyone.

but that's it. I came to realization that the characters here are merely humans. They have their imperfections, their selfishness— that made me love this. All of the... more>> mentioned characters are imperfect.

i pitied and disliked all of them. But then, they all have their various points which are impure— full of human complicated emotions intertwined with "love." thus, their endings.

i don't support this type of love but I just like this novel bc it shows how love can be expressed in different ways, in a rather complicated and obsessive kind of it.

because in truth, loving someone is not all about pureness, simplicity, smiles, and laughter.

i was wondering if this is really a love story or a story about loving causing in destruction.

if this is a love story, where did it all begin? Whereas, the beginning of an end is clearer than it.

Spoiler

just like what gao fei said. This is a story about he yujin and him. Just a story about them.

A short yet tear jerking novel, it was a good tragedy. I personally STRONGLY disagree with He Yu Jin's (MC) actions at all. No matter her circumstances her actions cannot be justified, it was just disgusting and appalling. Her love was obsessive to the point I felt suffocated while reading it. The novel shows us a reality of what happens if you push too much and love too much, only to tear the lives of the people around you apart. Yu Jin did that knowingly. Her love was an obsession... more>> that she couldn't let go, I couldn't stand her every time she proclaimed her love to the ML, it was extremely uncomfortable. Despite my criticism, the ending was befitting for her. I admire her for being to loyal and persistent to her love till the bitter end but that doesn't justify her actions. Her story shouldn't be romanticize, if anything it should be a lesson for us all.

Gao Fei (ML) was the main star of this novel. He reacted rightfully the way like a normal person should. To have been robbed, coerced and forced to ultimately having no choice but to concede leads to nothing but unhappiness. Two years married to someone proclaiming "I Love You" almost on a daily basis would definitely somehow melt a frozen heart. It was really heartbreaking to see the ML going through so much inner turmoil and trauma after MC's death, hovering between love, hate, longing and madness. I thought it was a true irony his name was 高飞 as it literally translate "to Soar", when I read the ending I couldn't help but laugh sadly through tears thinking he really soared in his final moments.

Some may disagree but in the end they were both so wrong and so right for each other. There was no one who would love and please Gao Fei like Yu Jin. She was everything that Gao Fei would have wanted if they started on the right foot. The subtle hints of Gao Fei comparing Yu Jin with his 2nd wife showed that he had actually unknowingly fallen in love with Yu Jin prior to her passing. But due to Yu Jin's despicable past actions his hatred for her overshadowed his love for her. By the time he realized it, it was too late yet his refusal and denial to admit he loved her was also the cause of this downwards spiral. To love someone you are supposed to hate is enough to break a person.

I enjoy this book, it's a short story so there's bound to be some unanswered questions. I only wished ML's POV was a few chapters longer. <<less

The ML's descent to psychosis and him consciously giving in to his hallucinations to some degree at the end, as his not explicitly spoken love for the MC gets more and more apparent... This was one of the best tragedies I've read so far. The hate/love relationship and their expressions of guilt and regret, each for how they had wronged the other - MC's guilt over how she got the ML to marry her, and the ML's regret for his cold treatment over the years and his realisation of the love he subconsciously habored for the MC some time before and after her death - was amazingly portrayed. The ML's monologue of his ironic, subtly depressed and crazed longing for the MC in the last chapter as he gives up his so-called 'normal life' completely is sure to make you cry.

In HYJ's pov, It didn't even take the first or second chapter to make me start crying, the plot of something happening to HYJ was predictable. I wondered how can a person be so selfless yet be selfish at the same time. Even though I knew something would happen to HYJ in the back of my mind, and the story later reveals about her illness I still couldn't help but feel sorry and hurt for her. The author had done a great job writing about it because though predictable, it still moved me very much.

When reading GF's pov, I had expected for him to make a vow not to get married, etc, etc but it was as if he had just moved on so quickly and fast that I was quite taken aback, I thought GF was unfeeling and he didn't really care for HYJ at that time and it was as if the time he spent with HYJ was just a dream.

But as the story progresses, you can start to see the tiny cracks in his so called normal life that he had tried so hard to cover up. Slowly, the story reveals how miserable he is, and how he still can't get rid of HYJ as she had left a huge impact on him.

The way it was written was so wonderful, the story yet being one of tragedy was so beautiful.

I think this story was able to show that not all things are rainbows and unicorns but this is they way how reality works.

One thought also crossed my mind when reading this, I was so taken by the writing of the author that I thought they might have experienced something like this. It's a gift for making such a tragic story beautiful.

I have no problem of the author ending the story like that, but it would definitely be nice to see an afterlife where they are happy? <<less

He Yujin... she was spoiled, unscrupulous, self-centered, and had no brain. But was she pitiful? Yes, she was. She could've obtained every single thing in this world that she desired, a man that truly loved her and would spare no effort to prove it to her. But she's dumb, f*cking dumb, but I just can't bring myself to hate her. She was a girl in love, helplessly in love. Although the way she bound Gao Fei to her was wrong, she knew it was wrong, but she still couldn't help... more>> but do it.

"He hated me to his very bones, but I loved him, and my love was no less than his hate, for my love was carved into my very soul. I loved him more than I loved myself."

He Yujin... you're a dumbass chicken. But even a hateful chicken deserves to be cooked deliciously. Why did you choose to embark on a path of no return?

Gao Fei... I do not understand him, had he ever loved He Yujin during the time she was alive? When he started to hallucinate about He Yujin years after her death, I thought you deserved it, the exact words he said to He Yujin. I only pity Su Jiajing and their unborn child.

Anyway, I feel like I'm reading a story from the POV of a villain in the typical cliche romance novel. But the villain loved the other person so sincerely, offering every bit of her to the man that loathed her for what she had done, a man that hated himself for he had unknowingly loved the villain back. If there was another life, or if time could be rewound, I hope that both of them do not cross paths. <<less

This series killed me and my heart. It took my heart then smashed it into pieces and like it wasn't enough, it took the little pieces and hammered it until it was nothing but dust then flushed it into the toilet.

Bothe the ML and MC are stubborn and have faults they are not perfect and that stubborness of theirs lead to their doom. If only one of them have learned to let go earlier then something might have changed in what happened to their story and something might have been... more>> left of my poor little heart.

The author did a good job in how they wrote the story (and their writing style really stabbed my heart and every chapter twists that knife lodged in my heart until the last chapter pulled it out to let all my blood gush out and lead me to death) and the translator did an excellent job in conveying the story the way the author probably wanted to convey it (and reading the translator's responses and explanations in the comments section is akin to pouring gas and lighting me on fire after I was stabbed by the knife).

This novel has turned me into a masochist every chapter gives me unbearable pain and torture but it was so beautiful I couldn't stop myself from reading it. <<less

I don't even know where to start with this.

The author is truly amazing for having packed so much emotional punch in such a short story. I'll get into the actual plot/content later, but can we just acknowledge how beautiful her writing style is? It was poetic yet comprehensive, and I often found myself rereading the same line over and over just to savor how well the words flowed with each other. (I'll also take this time to point out the absolutely phenomenal job the translator did with this work. Seriously.... more>> No errors whatsoever, and the change in languages did not detract a single bit from my reading experience. It's ridiculously hard to convey the same emotions when you're translating, but somehow, the translator accomplished it. So, massive kudos to them.) Her use of the unreliable narrator, the ambiguous wording that literally means one thing but actually implies another, and figurative language as a whole was very impressive.

Now, onto the story itself:

Spoiler

For starters, the MC is an inherently kind but also extremely naive girl who has the misfortune of coming from a rich family. And yes, you read that right, misfortune. Because she has lived such a pampered life, the MC has a somewhat detestable character trait of being relentless in getting what she wants. When she first meets the ML and falls in love with him, she does everything in her power to get him -- to the point where her father even kidnaps the ML's parents to get him to marry her. This, to put it lightly, is pretty despicable and is blackmail at best. In any other story, I would have hated her.

But the MC is also aware of her despicable actions. She is so understanding that what she has done is unforgivable, to the point where she is able to tolerate (even welcome, in some cases) the ML's neglect and loathing because she thinks she deserves it. Is the MC right? Part of me wants to say yes -- because of her interference, the ML's parents had to suffer through that ordeal, she caused him to break up with his girlfriend, and she was essentially forcing someone who doesn't love her to marry her. She needs some kind of punishment for that, doesn't she?

Only, it's not that simple. If someone steals a dollar from you, then to balance out the injustice they can just give a dollar back. You can't measure retribution for emotional trauma or for wrecking someone's life. Because MC does, in fact, suffer tremendously in her marriage with the ML. She leaves the luxuries of her old life and waits on the ML night and day. When he is cruel to her, and my lord does he say some of the cruelest things, she accepts them with apologies and "I love you"s to spare. She endures his implied unfaithfulness, the rejection of anything related to her, his disgust at her very existence. We also later figure out that the MC has a terminal illness that will take her life and causes her much pain. Her father, her last family member in the world, dies as well.

Isn't this enough karma for what she has done to him? I most certainly think so.

Another reason why I don't hate her (even though I feel like I should) is that she just loved the ML so much. The scene where she starts to prepare his birthday dinner early in the day only to become paralyzed because of her illness was my first indication that she was just a hopeless, miserable fool in love. She had the chance to stop the pain. Her phone was right there -- she could have called him and asked the ML to deliver the medicine to suppress her illness. Only, she didn't. Why? Because she didn't want to ruin the birthday surprise, and probably in part because she didn't want to inconvenience him/ruin his mood with her presence.

[collapse]

I'm not finished with this review, but I'm crying too hard to continue writing. Maybe, when I find this story less heart wrenching, I will come back. Maybe not. But if you're wondering whether or not to read, I only have this to say: please do.

This might not considered as typical romance story. As the translators noted, the leads' feelings are not the 3-dimensional love that most people wanted to paint.

I feel that both lead characters were different to other novels' leads that I've read before. Both of them have flaws that made them unforgettable and still can easily understand where these attitudes are coming from.

They're both mentally/ emotionally unstable. The FL is the sheltered daddy's girl being reckless and stubborn... while the ML is prideful, hateful, cold and trying to bottled his feelings.... more>> It's also quite opposite here, bc the girl was the one who used her power to get the guy.

I hated some of FL's deeds to get the ML... But despite her love being considered as obsesssive, ML realized that her love is also unconditional bc she accepted his flaws and imperfections making ML missed her. I think she's autistic or something with psychological problem.

The whole story was painful. In the end, the ML revealed that he's already seeking death to follow the FL... but he still tried to fulfill the FL's last wish by being "happy" so that she will not blame him in the afterlife even he failed.

The scene truly shot my heart was when he's hallucinating that the FL is still alive and pregnant with his child... and when he was on verge of dying, he promised that will do the same strategy that FL did to get him even if she'll hate him... so she can be his wife in the next life. <<less

The description is misleading. While it is a poem that is found in the story, I don't feel that it summarizes the story. The story itself is about reaching for what you want blindly and completely without any hesitations and how those ramifications embed into the lives of those around us.

Anyways our MC suffers from tunnel vision, although she is not meanspirited, her actions are too straightforward and she only knows to keep bulldozing ahead.

Like most Chinese tragedy stories, it is done in first person narrative with only minor dialogue.... more>> There are few supporting characters, with only a few changes in scenes.

It's nice enough to read if you want to kill some time, but don't expect anything amazing if you've read other tragedies before. It runs along the same lines of love found and love lost, almost always with it being the male MC being the one that loses. <<less

I was crying buckets.. I recommend this novel. It's short but there is this part where you can sympathize with the characters. Both the FL and ML loved each other, but while the FL loved the ML, the ML have never reciprocated her love. He only realized until he died. He rejected his yearning toward the FL, but love can never be predictable. A hate and love are intersected. Maybe you hate that person but over time you will learn to also love that person. Maybe you love that person... more>> but next time you will also hate that person. Feelings are unpredictable and also love.

WOW! I just love that novel. It make my heart squeezed dry. Why is it a short novel. Well!! You should just read it.

I think of this novel from time to time then I feel so sad and it's not hard for tears to come.

I'm not one for writing reviews, but I wanted to write about my feelings of this story. I'm glad I came upon it and decided to read it. If you like tragedies, then definitely do read it.

The ML had it hard, so hard. I feel sorry for him: (
