Lee Yeon, a B-grade Guide, just wanted to live unnoticed.

He concealed his looks and his abilities. Square glasses that no one would choose to wear, a giant mask, a fringe that covered half his eyes… He simply wanted a quiet life. But it seems like he’s caught the attention of a madman.

“Guide Lee Yeon is quite eye-catching. Makes me want to break him.”

Tae Ha-Jin, an S-grade esper, used every trick in the book to strip away Yeon’s façade. But then, the bastard started to change.

“What have you done to me, Yeon?”

No. Our relationship had changed.

“Lee Yeon, is your fishing ground that vast?” The man continued with a smooth curl of his lips. “To the point where you can leave a big catch like me unfed and locked up?”

*Door: A potential catastrophe that could occur anywhere at any time. When that door opens, all sorts of monsters pour out.

Trigger Warning: I don't think the translations have got to this point yet, buuut, there is su*cide and also multiple instances of domestic violence

Not sure how to tag the novel and/or if there's even tags for those

-------on to the review-----

... more>> Read everything other than Side Stories Vol 2. so I could be missing out on something important.

The translations are super good and helped keep me engaged. I usually find Korean novels kind of confusing and to get through if the translations aren't great, but I think Peach Tea Agency did a great job and it convinced me to get the official raws.

The novel itself... is about a lot of shitty fathers. Some evil fathers, some incompetent fathers, and some well-intentioned but failed fathers. Fathers who's messes their kids' (biological and/or 'adopted') have to deal with.

In that sense, when looking at the larger picture, it's got pretty good characters cast and plot progression, with the author tying everything in decently and making sure all loose ends are taken care of. If they introduced a character, they definitely won't be forgotten about and have some sort of ending.

However, the novel has some pacing problems, imo. Some things aren't described as well as they should be and some things glossed over, and some parts were tedious to get through. And lot of things would make it a better story for manhwa (which is what brought me to the story to begin with)

If this is your first foray into esper/guide universe, I think it'd be better to start somewhere else since a lot of 'typical' esper/guide tropes aren't explained and may be confusing. But otherwise, it's an easy and fun read.

While the Tae Ha-Jin (ML) is an extreme jackass, he's surprisingly the more mature one in their relationship and forces Yeon-I to communicate instead of just running away all the time (but I mean, can you blame Yeon-I for his Flight reflexes given his past?)

Some other cool things I liked (safe spoilers) :

Spoiler
  • Yeon-I goes on a couple of dates with a women before officially getting together with Ha-Jin. Goes to show that he really does like Ha-Jin after spending all that time with him.
  • Ha-Jin has an ex-fiancee (political reasons) who kinda stirs sh*t up. And leaves Yeon-I very upset and insecure. Ha-Jin has to do a lot of clean up and reassuring here and it kind of becomes a trauma
  • None of the shitty dads get absolved of their situations. None of them are martyred either. They don't get saint-ified after death.

Ok it's heavy stuff. Don't read if you want rainbows and daisies.

Everyone tries to use everyone in this story eccept for the main character's best friend.

The main character is full of hostility and apathy toward the world and the main lover alike. Well at first. Then he's changes his mind and wants to save as many people as possible in a beautiful character development.

The main lover is an as*hole who even when he aknowledges his feelings keeps the pigtail pulling bullsh*t in a toxic kind of way. The author tries... more>> to show how ML tries to be patient and consider the MC's feelings but it's not really convincing for me. Removing the pain from s*x doesn't mean you're not tearing up him apart.

That said the intensity is thrilling. People have feelings and are not dolls to play out a story. The way they act, even when they hurt others is perfectly explained by their twisted upbringing and natural selfishness.

The esper/guide aspect if fully utilised and it ties up to the main plot beautifully. I was fascinated by the revellations and interactions. <<less

Not a super fluffy story but very engrossing nonetheless. I quite enjoyed the OP MC and OP ML. The MC is not a shirking violet. He gets sh*t done

it was hilarious when he knocked the ML out after one of the guiding sessions

There's a lot of ab*se and trauma in the story. Lots of mentions of su*cide as well. Many lives are ruined by mad evil scientists and corrupt leaders. Although it's a predictable story, the author did a pretty good job bringing that plot together.

The setting and the countries are completely made-up. More than usual in Guideverse fiction, these events actually don't take place in an AU of Korea, which was somewhat interesting, but I wouldn't call this author the best world-builder.

As others mentioned, the pacing definitely could be better. And the translation was okay. It's LLM with some editing, but I still saw tons of uncaught pronoun switches for the MC and ML, unfortunately.

Nevertheless, it was enjoyable. I like jagged imperfect characters, and that's the vibe of the story. Hope the rest of the extras get translated eventually! <<less

I enjoyed the story. There were some misunderstandings but it was resolved pretty quickly. I wish there were more stories on the side characters especially ricardo and rain. But overall, a good read. ❤️ thank you for translating. 💜❤️

I love the side couple, they were pretty cute, but in the end I'm not really a fan of the story.

Let's just say I'm not a fan of misunderstandings.

the MC ran away the second time, when he was saying something along the lines of talking to the ML about it. I get it, he saw an illusion and wavered, but after seeing how the ML behaved all this time (with all the declarations of love and even the banner) you still won't even talk to him about it before leaving??? Why? Why leave ML wondering what's wrong and leave without even a confrontation again?

Can't they just please fight it out? I feel like this really screams issues on the trust and communication in their relationship.

I think if the story had fleshed out the reason for MCs flightiness more, like a response to trauma or something, I might have been able to accept it better or sympathise with it, but it was really draining to have to read it happen again.

Plus I don't get why ML always says MC was reeling in fishes and stuff when he obviously didn't intend to do so. The joke got old real fast.

Either way, although they addressed the situation in the end, I don't think his trust issues and insecurities with relationships could have been resolved so easily. Felt like they could have spent a bit more time on that.

Also, there was the thing about the
