I became a wizard of the Illusion Magic School and decided to create a virtual reality with illusion magic to play a tabletop role-playing game (TRPG).

It was great to create a virtual reality, but I was in trouble because there were no suitable players. During that time, I received an offer to be the professor from the Royal Academy.

The offer was to use illusion magic to fill the students’ lack of practical experience safely. And so, I became a professor at the academy.

“Send me back, send me back to that world right now-!”

“Outer god, someday an outer god will be our doom, we’ll all die!!”

“I am not the bastard of the Redburn Ducal Family. I am the foremost disciple of the Great Namgung Clan, Namgung Qinghui!”

But it seems there is a bit of a misunderstanding.

This isn’t a spell for dimensional travel, kids. It’s fiction…

Probably the best novel of the year tbh. Interesting premise, check. Unique events, check. Humors that actually land, check. Plot that is different from thousands of copy and paste isekai/fantasy novels but also retain the good points of isekai/fantasy novel, check. References that those who read lots of novel, manga and movie will understands, check. This is probably top 3 of the best novel coming out of 2023. A must read

If you ever watched gintama, you’ll understand this novel immediately, it’s has so much references and parodies it starts off as nonsensical and just funny, but when the story gets serious, it draws you in more and more, until comedy relief becomes just a much needed break to much more deeper narrative going on in the background

It is funny novel about MC using "illusion" magic to make VR, AI, VT, others weird modern thing

and the fun part is the misunderstanding of others people around him.

Also MC has a lot of screw loose in his head (may be explain later in the plot.)

The idea of the story is good and the writing was ok. However, I feel like the perspectives and realities of different characters got really confusing the more I read. It's also compounded by the fact nobody has names. Everyone's like 'esteemed junior' or 'purple tower master'. The first arc with the prince was really good, but I lost interest really quick after.

Pretty good "Scenerios" story, with different plots and settings that characters experience. If a setting feels like it doesn't make sense, that's probably by design. There's a LOT of misunderstandings! Some more frustrating than others, but if you don't mind and are willing to see things play out, then its a pretty good novel.

Otherworld TRPG Game Master is one of the most creative and purely entertaining novels I've read in a long time. The premise of a reincarnated Korean man creating immersive virtual reality TRPG (tabletop RPG) campaigns using illusion magic is brilliantly executed.

The novel shines in how it takes this central concept and runs with it in wildly imaginative directions. Each TRPG "session" that the eccentric protagonist runs is like being transported into its own self-contained story world, filled with drama, humor, pathos and endless possibilities. The variety of scenarios he crafts... more>> keeps things constantly fresh and unpredictable.

What makes it even more engaging is how the lines between fantasy and reality become blurred, as the players get so immersed in the believable illusions that they struggle to separate truth from fiction. This leads to many hilarious misunderstandings and conflicts. The memorable cast of characters, both players and NPCs, further elevate the narrative.

Beneath the raucous fun, there are also intriguing hints of deeper mysteries surrounding the protagonist's abilities and the nature of this fantasy world. His unconventional motivations and inner monologues provide insightful commentary on storytelling and roleplaying itself.

With brilliant storytelling, bathed in irreverent humor and heartfelt character moments, Otherworld TRPG Game Master is a true gem. I'm utterly captivated seeing where this rollercoaster ride will go next. An easy and enthusiastic recommendation for anyone looking for an endlessly creative and entertainingread. <<less

This is a pretty enjoyable novel so far, though its very early. What impresses me the most about it is it generally seems planned, story arcs have satisfying conclusions, and the main protagonist isn't always required to have a central role within the story (on the contrary, due to the nature of the narrative, he often doesn't). The romance set up seems charming, and the characters are generally pretty fun.

There's a lot of lifting done to get to the point where the illusory worlds can exist but simultaneously most of it is handwaved and handled without issue.

My biggest problem is the MC seems like a complete jerk, especially to the purple tower master. It's presented as comedy but it really fell flat for me. I was left watching this hyper-competent OP magician be absurdly selfish and blase about anyone else.

The MC was bullied pretty harshly and was in a loveless relationship and such in the past, but after seeing... more>> the present I was left wondering that maybe he didn't deserve it, but maybe he drew aggro with his attitude.

There's some interesting trauma markers like how his first character spoke in the third-person but now he can't hear names and uses perception blocking magic on his own name. And the "game sessions" seem like they'll be satisfying with occasional meta and hints of them being more than they appear.

But I just can't get past the comedy parts. If the comedy had worked for me, I probably wouldn't be able to put it down, but as it constitutes the framing device for the sessions and the personality of the MC, I'll be dropping it here. <<less

I won't mark which chapter, for the sake of not spoiling - but I write this with tears in my eyes, wholeheartedly endorsing this story

Does it have some parts that are imperfect? Sure, but when it hits; it hits.

This is a really fun read so far. The "arcs" are centered around main characters and supporting characters going into an illusion TRPG world that they inevitably think is real, and undergoing a lot of character development during it. The actual "plot" is barely existent though, so dont' come in expecting that. It's just an excuse for otherworld characters to experience Call of Cthulhu, etc. As if they were real, and their reactions to it.
