After finishing playing mahjong, Yu Zhou, a recently resigned writer, returned home and found a young lady from ancient times, Xiang Wan, who was a former prime minister’s daughter, sitting on her sofa. After some simple communication, Yu Zhou accepted this “roommate” who had traveled through time with her chūnibyō mind.

On the other hand, Yu Zhou’s novel was adapted into an audio drama, which was unexpectedly performed by the well-known voice actress Su Chang, causing Yu Zhou to be overjoyed yet also in tears, because Su Chang was her ex-girlfriend.

Through their new connections, the girls re-examine their own lives and achieve personal growth. This absurd yet realistic experience may also “pat awake” Yu Zhou’s stagnant love life.

All I can say first of all is...

Damn! I should have read that love triangle tag. 😭 Secondly, not just any generic love triangle, I'm literally struggling between choosing who should be the true FL.

MC's disappointing persona is understandable as you keep reading but I'll be blunt, she's still hella annoying. I'm in it for the future FLs tbh. I'm giving this a 50/50. It makes me want to read it addictively and also makes me want to push this aside because how frustrating it can also be. Overall, shoutout... more>> to TL for the great translation! <<less

I'm almost finished with this story. It's extraordinarily good. I only recently got into reading baihe stories so I'm no expert. What I like about the translation of this particular story is that it's easy to read and understand. I think I read that the translator is a native Chinese... correct me if I'm wrong but isn't it usually a person who is more proficient at English than Chinese who does the translating? Anyway, the point I'm trying to make is that the flow of the story is smooth and... more>> there isn't literal translations of words/sayings that disrupt the cadence of the story because how something that is said in Chinese could make perfect sense but when translated to English, might sound a little funny. I really appreciate that!

As for the story itself... it's not a fluff piece with a superficial story line. It does get into the complexities of human beings and their relationships; the flaws we have and how we learn to deal with them. On some level, I could relate and that's what makes reading this enjoyable. I won't get into the intricacies in case I spoil it for others but I will say that the characters have real depth to them and the author did a good job of conveying the minutiae of the daily lives of lesbians (besides the time traveling thing lol). Oh! There's also A LOT of information about audio dramas... I felt like I had a few lessons about this industry! lmao

Big thank you to the translator for doing an excellent job of sharing this story with us and of course, much gratitude to the author whom I wish I could thank personally, if only I knew how to get in touch with her and and know Chinese. ha ha. Thank You! <<less

Big shoutout to the translator for taking on this novel! I once tried reading it through MTL and nearly fried my brain, so I'm really grateful for all the time and effort that went into this.

Even though I'm usually not a fan of love triangles, I was completely drawn in by the characters and their journey. If you're looking for a well-written, emotionally rich story, I definitely recommend giving this one a try.

I'm not a fan of love triangles, so I have scrolled past this novel many times. However, one day I decided to give it a go and I finished it in a day. I didn't really feel like it was a love triangle, more like there were 3 female protagonists. While they both like the main protagonist, it's obvious who the main protagonist likes back.

the writing is one of my favorites. Lucici (the author) really knows how to make a scene that just wants you to scream into your pillow!... more>> I was so captivated yet I also wanted to stop every 3 chapters and rethink my life decisions. It is surprisingly philosophical, with its themes and messages.

overall, I would recommend this to anyone who wants a bit of comedy, cdrama-esque scenes and happy ending. <<less

As a confessed and adamant hater of love triangles I shouldn't be the person you listen to if you came knowing what this story is.

I'm giving this four stars for a few reasons though, despite the story's many flaws.

The first is because the characterization is excellent and each person is believable on their own. No one's existence revolves solely around another person. They're living, breathing people within the confines of the story.

... more>> The second is because... well... They have problems just like regular people. Insecurities, dislikes, flaws.

Finally, the third, is because I like Xiang Wan. That's it, she's the only person I like. Because....

Spoiler

Just like a lot of love triangles this story only really cares about making the passionate (read: toxic) relationship the true relationship. And it spends a looooooooong time building up the relationship between XW and YZ only to smash it apart and force the two people who were absolutely HORRENDOUS to each other back together.

[collapse]

So that's it. A very well written story completely broken for me because it falls into the terrible trap of a love triangle. I think I've only read one love triangle that really worked well, imo, and that was She Belongs to Me. <<less

The majority of baihe novels I have read (the translations of) have not really put the same depth and respect to self-worth and love—in multiple forms—as this novel does.

Things this novel covers such as: Being in love is not enough for a relationship to function well, and healthily, for all parties involved; communication, confrontation, and compromise are necessary. Romantic love is not the only love that should be cherished. Not everyone is gay. Impostor syndrome (or similar) is a b*tch. Et cetera.

This novel is refreshingly grounded and relatable, with a... more>> cast that I just adore. I can see why the MC can frustrate some people, but I know too many giver types like that to judge her too harshly. It is not always easy to be kind to yourself; and in that unhappy headspace, being unkind to others is all too easy, even unintentionally.

The only thing I left this novel questioning was the inclusion of the time travel: it's a bit incongruous in an otherwise-grounded story, but it makes more sense in the context of the sequel.

Overall, this was a wonderful read, and I would definitely recommend if people are in the mood to see people, and relationships, heal and grow and learn rather realistically, in that it is nonlinear and messy—but that makes it all the more beautiful. <<less

There are some novels which resonate within you, Pat Me Please is one of them. It's not a typical love triangle where the drama only surrounds their 'romance', rather it is about personal development. Development in interpersonal relations. Our MC, Yu Zhou is not a perfect fairy but is as humane as any of us are. Through Xiang Wan, she heals herself and also understands more of her flaws in her past relationship with Su Chang. Su Chang also gives her the courage to face parts of herself which she... more>> did not do in the past.

Xiang Wan, the time traveller on the other hand through her friendship with Yu Zhou understands that even though there is no permanent banquet in this world, she is allowed to feel things and she is allowed to grow on her own.

Su Chang is also as human as the aforementioned characters. She gets hurt, she gets jealous, she is understanding, she is friendly, dignified and she is just an awkward cold face who is warmest underneath her celebrity image. She learns from her past mistakes in the relationship and tries to mend things to the best of her abilities.

All the three characters have been fleshed out so well that at some point it makes you feel that it is not a fiction. I love Yu Zhou and Xiang Wan's dynamic the best. They are like two halves of a soul.

This story has many memorable lines but the one I'd like to quote here is from Chapter 99-

"Romance is a handshake, love is a pat." <<less

(just want to get this out there that the 4/5 stars im giving is closer to a 3.75 stars but im stuck only giving it 3/5 OR 4/5, neither which actually reflect how I feel)

im going to admit that for the first 30ish chapters I was pretty underwhelmed and almost felt nothing for the characters or even the story for that matter, and frankly I couldve dropped it by then, but I wanted to see if I just needed to give the author time. Im glad that I... more>> did give the author a chance because after the initial 30 chapters, it was like the author knew things needed to develop a bit more than just going through the motions.

i also want to say that while I saw the "love triangles" tag, it didn't really feel like a love triangle to me. It was mostly su chang; the ex-girlfriend who still had feelings for yu zhou, xiang wan; the new girl in the picture who develops a crush on the first girl in the modern era, and finally yu zhou; the center of the love triangle, and a character who I thought wasn't going to pick either girl in the end. In fact the lack of a love triangle was due to the fact that for the most part xiang wan and yu zhou felt like best friends or sisters so their potential relationship wasnt headed in a romantic direction. Contrast to su chang and yu zhou who are ex-girlfriends at the start of the novel and su chang still clearly has feelings and chases after yu zhou to possibly get back together. Even though I knew these two were endgame, I still second-guessed myself with how much yu zhou would say that she wasnt getting back together with su chang (however reluctant it seems to be, because she also has lingering feelings).

we do however find out what went wrong in the relationship throughout the story, most of which boiling down to either miscommunication or just not communicating at all. We find out how each one contributed to the downfall and the eventual breakup, and how simply being in love wasnt enough. A lot of communication, compromise, healthy boundaries, dedication is needed to maintain a relationship, and SuZhou begin to learn that lesson as they're in each other's lives once again and by the end, are in a better position to be in a relationship with one another. It's not perfect, because love isnt, but there's at least effort being put in so the same mistakes aren't being repeated.

in comparison, we have yu zhou and xiang wan's (platonic) relationship that is very easygoing and natural throughout the story even when xiang wan eventually develops feelings and confesses to yu zhou, nothing really changes between them besides the awareness that new feelings are involved. But that's due in part to the very mature conversation that the two have between the first confession and the subsequent rejection. Xiang wan's feelings arent dismissed and are allowed to exist because a girl's first love is important even if she eventually falls in love with someone else.

in the end I would say that if you aren't a fan of love triangles, this one definitely doesnt read like one and the feelings of everyone involved is considered. If you also like reading about former lovers getting back together and learning the hard way that it takes more than being love to be in a relationship, id say give this a try. The female leads are well written, with believable flaws and internal struggles that they work through.

below is a spoiler talk about yu zhou

Spoiler
[collapse]

in fact the one whos got a lot of work to do internally is yu zhou who worries so much about the perception of other people (both online and offline) that it actively damages her self esteem and it very well could've destroyed her chances of getting back together with su chang. She overthinks her actions and words, while at the same time doesn't communicate with the people around her (biggest example being su chang). Her self esteem alone while she was dating su chang the first time was low with how she was constantly comparing herself to su chang and their respective environments. She pushes people away and avoids them when things become overwhelming, and as a result spirals even further inward. She questions why su chang never introduced her as her girlfriend or even mentioned a girlfriend, but she didnt ask su chang this question. She got annoyed whenever su chang ordered too much food but never properly put it away, wouldnt remind su chang about the tr*sh or the cleaning duties because in her mind, su chang was above those things.

those flaws end up culminating all together when she reads comments online saying that she should bow to su chang for making her unknown story much more popular, and how everything is thanks to su chang. Her overthinking lead her to internalize those comments, and then take it out on su chang by not responding to her messages simply because seeing her name made her angry even though it was irrational and wasnt what su chang thought. Eventually su chang confronts yu zhou, the emotions get the better of yu zhou causing her to lash out and push su chang away. All this couldve spelt disaster for their relationship frankly. She's just lucky she had friends who could speak to her, along with su chang who in the end gave her a final chance.

im honestly glad that in the end, she decides she's going to work on herself and do better from then on. As frustrating as she was to follow, it was worth experiencing. <<less

I didn't see the love triangle tag at all but I don't regret it. It's so good rooting for whoever while reading on blind.

Spoiler

I was reading this and telling the story to a friend we both kinda cheering on for SC instead of XW (who I thought was the FL). Friend was saying it's ballsy putting a character who isekaied to this world but doesn't end up with the MC.

I was ecstatic reading the end note because while im happy for the main couple XW deserves her own gf too.
