In the season of spring plowing, Tong Sui hastily got married.

Her husband’s family lived twenty miles away, a place Tong Sui had never visited before.

She had never seen her husband, who had spent six years serving in the military away from home. All she heard were tales of his fierce demeanor, which even troublemakers dared not provoke.

On the eve of her marriage, a scholarly neighbor once proposed eloping with her. Tong Sui did not agree; she appreciated the scholar’s gentleness and courtesy, but she knew well that in such chaotic times, he wouldn’t be able to protect her at all.

· Love after marriage, daily life.
· The step-by-step advancement of a commoner couple, fictitious and without historical basis.

I did enjoy this novel a lot. I do have some gripe with the ML being a simp as a previous reviewer mentioned but we later see the MC simping for the ML after a certain time has passed. Getting her backstory explained lightly in the extras along with seeing how the ML feel for her in the first place was great in expanding their characters. I also liked that the novel was told almost in the 3rd person. Everyone had their own part in the story.

Don't flame me for... more>> this but the 3rd bro in a historical context if we're reading the same story did nothing wrong. I imagine he just wanted a free beautiful wife that owed him a life saving favor. In 2025 that crap is detestable and he got his just desserts because he fell in love with her and she never reciprocated that love back.

4th bro was alright, and 5th bro was lowkey painted autistic/on the spectrum in some way which point for diversity I guess.

Eldest Sister in Law and Sister in Law re-marrying over their 30s specifically the sister in law is kinda unrealistic since the likelihood of having a child is significantly lower, and this is her new husbands first marriage, so he has no kids of his own, his family line will die out. Very feminist of the author.

Grandpa is a champ, the MVP, the GOAT. Uncle was cool, aunt was not likeable, but not hateful either, Mianmian was a vase, Qiyao was a brat.

The emperor did turn out to be a good guy, unfortunately he had a dumb shortsighted son, a terribly s*upid adopted son, and a shortsighted believed she was smarter than everyone wife. The empress really pissed me off by saying that the Xios could be killed after being throughly used like what lady? They help you secure your empire and their reward is you killing them. And after all the cozying up you were doing to Tong Sui is wild to me. Hypocrite!

Last but not least, I laugh at the mention of slice of life cause where? Where is my promised slice of life? We have some moments sure but this is maybe 5% (I'm being generous) slice of life. This what not what I signed up for at all! I still throughly enjoyed it but this was a lot of action, movement, passion, etc. The synopsis does this story no justice for what the reader will get themselves into. It was a great ride though. <<less

This is the second novel that I’ve read from this author and I can’t grasp what it is but something about her main characters love always leaves not liking them entirely. The male lead is always 100% invested in the relationship (simp) while the FL seems like she could leave the relationship at any time. I guess this is for self protection but the way it’s written is always annoying to me somehow.

The story itself is really good. The FL is a bit unrealistic. Like she’s super good at archery... more>> and then super good at war and strategy and is basically trained by her grandfather-in-law but she’s only like 18. The ML was better written and makes more sense he was in a war for 6 years and developed his skills there. Together they had cute moments for sure but I have a hard time with unequal relationships like discussed above.

I liked his fourth brother the most and wished they had expanded more on him. The third brother was truly detestable. He loved his wife but she could never love him because he was her rapist and she had to marry him. I totally sympathize with her and their relationship could have been good if he didn’t do what he did, because he really cherishes her afterwards. S*upid. Fifth brother is just so cute! Glad he got a cute wife at the end too. <<less

Really good novel. Its sad that most of it is about war and troubled times really affect everyone especially if you're poor but it has very fun and cute moments too. The Xiao family (plus their in laws and friends) are very tight knit and they're always bickering and annoying the heck out of each other😂 Its so fun to read those parts. Also Xiao Zhen is one of the best MLs in my list. He's very strong, smart, kind and caring to his family. Tong Sui is no Mary... more>> Sue. She brought a lot to the table and very caring to those around her.

This author really makes good characters, I enjoyed reading this a lot too. <<less

This was a phenomenal novel, and I enjoyed every minute I spent reading it.

This is my third read from this author, and as always, they left me in awe and contemplation and wanting more of the story.

This book follows a family of hunters and soldiers through troubled times and the precarious state of the rise of a dynasty. Through the narration, we see our protagonists grow and perform great feats as they try to keep their family and community safe from all the bedlam that comes with an incompetent emperor.... more>> I loved this book, and every chapter was as enjoyable a read as the next. I really can't wait to find the next book that will leave me in awe as this book did. <<less

I must say, I am not into reading or watching war stories but I got really hooked on this one. I mtl it to finish the novel and boy it did not disappoint. It by far the best novel I’ve read by this author (and she has a lot) Although half of it describes the war, it really focused on family ties, patriotism, camaraderie, and love. For those wondering if the romance in this story is good, yes it very sweet and will not disappoint at all - even the... more>> side characters have their own romance stories. ❤️ <<less
