On the Third-Year of Kaihuang, as the Great Sui unfolds its curtains to welcome the glorious Tang Dynasty in succession to the Northern Dynasty, Yang Jian established a secret agency, the Jiejian Bureau in preparation to unify the world.

In a stormy night filled with snow, a convoy of tribute sent by the Kingdom of Khotan was ambushed and massacred with not a living soul left behind. The Second Commander of the Jiejian Bureau, Feng Xiao came forth to investigate the case under Imperial Orders.

A gathering of storms would soon take place in a little city which sat on the frontier, called the City of Six Crafts, where all the top martial powers across the lands would meet.

The ever successful Second Commander Feng meets a dead end when he ran into a Master Daoist with ailing health.

All would be unknown if they had never crossed paths, but once their paths crossed, Second Commander Feng realized this ailing man had more secrets than himself.

This is hands down one of my favorite novels regardless of language. I read this novel in raw Chinese supplemented by the (very excellent) audiobook and Dust Bunny’s translation. I was addicted as I was reading it and stayed up way too late several nights because I couldn’t put it down. I am genuinely sad that I finished it, and am now re-reading various parts. Upon second read, I am picking up so many details and character points that I missed the first time. For some reason I can’t fathom,... more>> this novel doesn’t have the fan base that Thousand Autumns does among English-speaking fans (though it does among Chinese readers). Thousand Autumns was great but for me it dragged on way more than Peerless did and Peerless is more polished.

Meng Xi Shi is an amazing author and has created some amazing characters. Thousand Autumns had some spit-out-water hilarious moments due to Yan Wushi’s poisonous tongue. Now take that poisonous tongue and give it to BOTH ML and MC and have them bicker and sabotage each other for almost 200 chapters.

In typical Meng Xi Shi style, the romance is slow burn. There was chemistry from the start (if you look hard enough through the mutual sabotage lmao) and the romantic developments are incredibly natural and smooth. At the start, ML’s narcissism makes it virtually impossible to imagine him loving anyone but himself, and MC’s goal-oriented nature (ahem, workaholic) and incredible brain mean that very few people understand him or match his level. As the story progresses, ML and MC slowly come to trust, then rely on each other.

And finally, they come to see each other as exceptions to the rest of the world. ML, who is disinterested in even the great beauties of the world, genuinely sees MC as lovable and above them all. MC finds in ML someone who is worth even more than his goals, and who is worth living for... or specifically, worth living for so he can lay down more pits for him, lmao. <<less

My rating is just personal preference. The author is still a good writer. The translation is still good. But despite all of that, I would say I don't quite care about the characters or plot. I actually find it quite forced and slightly illogical. I'm not sure if Feng is the MC or if cui is but Feng's personality did like a 360 when he met Cui. How is it he was so cold, but then he just becomes this shameless narcissist for content ? Literally I think it's just... more>> because the author knows people like this kinda of enemies dynamic between leads, but unfortunately it comes off forced imo with these two. Because it doesn't make sense.

Spoiler

if they are the commanders of the king and empress secret groups.... Why not own up to that cui? Like he purposely tortured himself and made the investigation for both of them longer just to contrive a sense of hatred beteeen them that would have never happened if they were just leaders who were willing to be upfront. Ok even if they wanted to solve this first for glory, cui could still be honest about his identity and still motherf*cking do sh*t in the background without getting caught bc imo Feng's group seems incapable despite all their hype lol it's just. Overly contrived. It comes off obvious to me what thee author was trying to do. I wish I could not see it lol. I wish it came off more natural for me. But it doesn't make sense.

Cui literally was like ok I'm gonna sit in this black box for 5 days and get poisoned for 2 of those days just because I want to be secretive against an (technically) ally government group, just so I figure it all out before them. like make it make sense. The only logic is that the author wanted them to have a reason to "hate each other" bc ppl love banter and "enemies" to lovers dynamic. Imo overly contrived bc illogical.

It's unfortunate bc the writing is good but I dont think the character and world building is that great.

I think this author does best when they can reference a world background to anchor their characters and stories from. Because I think making their own world is too much for them to handle. I really recommend their other much better book which is more focused on the cases (which I like) & has smarter characters called um the minister one of the 14th or something lol. Anyways unfortunate bc I think thee author could've done better. This author is capable of such great heights that I do feel disappointed with this one.

[collapse]

I really do think this author wrote this for the fans lol. It comes off like "entertainment". Arguably better written than a lot of other books. But just not my type. So I'm done lol. <<less

I'm too lazy to write a proper review. scattered thoughts: this was such a fun ride -- lots of good tropey stuff and it is more 'genre-y' than Thousand Autumns, which seemed very experimental and read more like a character study (i loved it though).

just a note that there is the usual portrayal of non-Han Chinese ethnic groups as barbarians and savages skilled in dark magic, poison, curses...

this author also really likes politics and it was hard to keep track of and stay interested with the many side characters that... more>> appeared in the last arc. one of the villains was brought in really late (felt a bit abrupt -- lack of build-up) and I felt that the last bit would have been stronger if she had been incorporated into the story more frequently.

anyway, this was so fun! <<less

I really love this one. Lighthearted, with a good (and winding plot), romance develops steadily, humour is top tier. This must be the embodiment of the enemies-to-lovers trait, really loved watching the 2 main characters gradually develop feelings for each other. Their relationship is cute too, and consistent throughout, reminding me of Tom and Jerry.

Cui Buqu is physically weak but he is extremely intelligent. Paired with Feng Xiao who is one of the top cultivators, they make a great pair. Loved how they collaborated to solve mysteries together, and how... more>> they began to trust each other.

Great read! <<less

I really love this novel. I just finished it now. The plot, characters, and everything are excellent. The mysteries are interesting and will get you restless.

The MC is an invalid sickly man but very crafty that he didn't even need to have a powerful martial arts skill to win a battle. While the ML is always full of himself and loves his appearance so much that he would even marry his own reflection hahaha. The two are both leaders of two different bureaus, under the Emperor and Empress. They loved... more>> plotting and digging pits for each other. Until the ending, they still didn't change except that they both have feelings for each other.

I love the supporting characters, even some of the villains. They're just so interesting and likable.

This is a must-read for those who loved cultivation novels but doesn't like smuts. This is definitely enjoyable and fun to read. The main characters are so funny, especially ML. He's so cute and funny when he falls to the pits MC digs for him.

The story is so deep. At the end of the story, you can connect the mysteries together and find that they were all related. I would say, this is one of the best novels I read. It didn't disappoint me and it reaches my high standards.

There's only one defect but it would not affect the story but I'm not telling it. Maybe you'll not notice it either because I only notice it after reading one of the reviews.

Anyways. Overall, five stars. <<less

This is an amazing read. Such mindblowing mysteries and such an amazing intelligent person to solve them. The ML and MC was awesome, I loved how they trusted each other and knew the other will be there. The funny bickering, the game of pitting each other was a delight. The descriptions of fighting scenes are beautiful.

I also liked how interesting the villains are. Their intelligence is no joke.

It really reads like a child of TA and The Fourteenth Year of Chenghua. It's definitely better from what danmei genre can offer, albeit nothing special for me. I'm not a fan of bickering couple dynamics, which moreover have zero development in this regard and when it comes to plot, MXS has had better ones. Good but not as memorable as the iconic Thousand Autumns, both on the side of the relationship and the character.

Personal ranking 70 %. I definitely don't regret the money. MXS is a good author... more>> with realistic relationship development with grounded and mature views. <<less

I thought this would never surpass Qian Qiu for me but the extremely compelling dynamic between the main characters completely won me over.. Rivals growing closer while investigating mu*ders.. Being the only ones to stir each other’s hearts yet remaining so dishonest on the surface.. I adored how the story progressed through actions first and words second. The ending was abrupt yet we know CB and FX would give everything to spend more days bickering together, so of course they’d live. It’s also heart warming to see how gentle FX... more>> is in the most perilous moments. T-T Read it in 4 days LOL.

Honestly, since it felt so different from Qian Qiu, I still don't know which I like better, but both are in my top 3 favorite danmei novels for now! <<less

Rated it at 4 but am split between a 3* and a 4* but I always rate up rather than down.

For the tl, it's a bit... it didn't follow the previously used names for countries, and it's just worse off when it comes to quality.

The thing about the novel itself, I don't like how it feels like many strings were left loose, and the way it ended very abruptly, also that the mastery of the mentioned martial artists is sorta unsubstantial, idk it's just not as feelable as it... more>> was in Qian qiu. The fact that Cui Buqu is going to die a lot earlier than Feng Xiao was never really even mention as a thing, in the context of martial artists in this world living longer lives with youthful looks and it sorta like, it must at least be a thought in his head? And then how did Feng Xiao even end p the sect master when that old fox isn't dead? Just the lack of information is a bit of an itch. Tbo the tl quality is def affecting enjoyment.

The characterization was phenomenal, truly, loved the narcissism. The plot was really well planned out, but again, I couldn't really get super into it because of the tl. <<less

Preface: at the time of writing this review, I have not read Thousand Autumns or any of this author's other works

Despite the rave reviews for this novel, I simply couldn't get into it. My biggest issue with this novel and style is how much of the characterization of the characters are "tell not show". We know the MC is supposedly the smartest person around, but nothing about his decision-making actually proves this. We're constantly told how cunning MC's plans are, when frankly, I can personally think of 20 better ways... more>> to resolve a situation. MC can bear untold amounts of pain that would bring other people to their knees, but doesn't have the will to drink bitter medicine that will actually help him heal? There's a thousand contradictions that make me question the author's intelligence and judgement.

The ML is annoying. Literally the most self-absorb narcissist you can find. This is mostly used as comic relief because otherwise, he would be the most generic OP cultivator ML. The only thing more annoying than the ML describing how beautiful he is, is the author spending every other paragraph describing how beautiful he is. I don't need reminders every chapter, I have a working memory.

The plot is bearable. It's not intelligent, but not so full of plot holes it makes your head explode. Mostly, I just dislike how half of the plot is about the MC falling over at a stiff breeze. Usually, in such stories, the side characters can bring enough humor or personality to redeem the story. However, despite ample screen time, each of the side characters continues to have the personality of a 2D cardboard cutout.

Spoiler

The novel is set in an alternate wuxia version of imperialist China. The MC and ML and heads of competing factions (similar to FBI vs CIA). The MC reports to the empress and is in charge of more intelligence gathering. ML reports to the emperor and is more in charge of peace keeping. In the first arc, ML capture MC. Together they solve the mystery of a mu*dered ambassador and the missing gift to the emperor he was carrying. The next arc is about solving the barbarian issue the MC was tasked with. Both arcs are unmemorable. I dropped the novel before I finished arc 2.

[collapse]

If I had to summarize, the main issue with this novel is how boring it is. I just can't seem to muster the energy to finish it despite being halfway through it. This says a lot considering I've finished reading all kinds of tr*sh novels for completion's sake. <<less

One of my most favorite novels, the story is absolutely amazing and I loved all the characters, reading it was definitely an experience I would always remember! Even though I couldn't understand some things, the story still managed to keep my interest and everytime, I wanted to know what happens next, I love all the personalities of the characters as they all show very unique, feng xiao and cui buqu always feels like the couples who bicker with eachother no matter what, but either way, they're partners through and through

Peerless was an enjoyable read. The MC is very lovable. He's a very intelligent man whose health is in bad condition. He has a cold and blunt personality. The ML is incredibly stunning, the side characters always pause to admire his beauty. He is a top martial artist and is a shameless individual. The two men always clash with each other which brings a lot of humor.

The plot was very engaging and I couldn't stop reading it once I started. This novel is a slow burn. Do not expect there... more>> to be lots of romantic moments. The side characters are endearing.

Actual rating: 4.5

The plot itself is nothing new: political intrigue with all the cases linking to each other at the end, nothing particularly earth-shattering. Also the novel took inspiration from real-life history (Sui Dynasty), so despite the events in the novel, we know the outcome in the end.

However, the main selling point of this novel are the main leads, Cui Buqu and Feng Xiao. I really like their dynamic, as without them, the plot by itself would be pretty lacklustre.

There's some issue with pacing as some arcs are slow to... more>> get through, others fast, but honestly I don't mind because I kept getting distracted by FengCui's bickering and their need to constantly pit each other as they go around solving cases lol

I think some of the side characters need more fleshing out:

Spoiler

Especially the main villain, Xiao Lu, there is some buildup (as shown how the cases are linked to each other), and Xiao Lu as a character is compelling (he has a reason for why he does the things he does), but his presence felt really disconnected from the rest of the story, and only at the end did he actively play a role. But then again, the ending did have me on the edge of my seat, seeing Xiao Lu and Ququ working together and understanding each other, I had a lot of complicated feelings lmao, if anything I quite liked Xiao Lu as a character

[collapse]

Ultimately, it was a good read. I recommend reading Thousand Autumns first (I read Peerless first, don't be like me) because it makes sense chronologically + there are easter eggs in reference to Thousand Autumns in Peerless <<less

Their dynamic is everything. Both are so shameless and don't care about anything other than what they want to care about. The plot is intricate, the characters well fleshed and even the mystery and crime solving is just my type. Gosh I love their brains. I love plots where the MC/ML can strategise. Such plots r so captivating. From the beginning to the ending, it's one fascinating story.

They dig pits for e/o even after they fall in love and no one takes a step back lmaoo. They're too entertaining. I... more>> really hope to read more of such badass MC and ML novels. <<less

Ngl, this story became my top 2 favourite story, after 2ha, after reading this. This story is awesome, the author did great. I'm really hooked with this story so much that I even tried to insert reading this novel on my tight schedule on my midterms last week. I really recommend this story to everyone, it's about 2 commander, one is an intelligent sick man who likes to pit against someone (esp to his love interest) and an annoying germaphobe narcissist commander, investigating and solving a case that leads to... more>> unravel a mystery about an organization.

STORY (5/5) :I love how the author was focused more on its plot than the romance itself. The plot is complex, there is a point that I almost got lost with the plot and can't even got shocked with its plot twist because the characters are too many to memorize. I even have to read the previous chapters to know them. But the plot is still great! I'm always at the edge of my seat when the main couples are solving a case because it is intriguing.

ROMANCE (6/5) : The romance between the two characters is slow burn, I love how their realtionship developed every book/arc, from enemies to lovers. The two main characters are cute when they are bickering like an old couples and these two love their egos more than their lovers.

I remember a scene in one extra where
Spoiler

Feng Xiao noticed Cui Buqu was cold and distance to him but he wants to feed his ego and make it like he doesn't care so he asked Qin Miaoyu to gossip on Zuoyue Bureau but failed to see Cui Buqu but got an information about the empress asking Cui Buqu about her wanting Feng Xiao to get married with her daughter, so he personally went to Cui Buqu because he thinks A-qu was jealous and that extra was my personal fav because it is HILARIOUS

[collapse]

Going back, they also loves to dug pit with each other and both fell on it and it is hilarious when they finally realize they fall for it. And every arc or book, these two has other identity that made a lot of pairing about them in this book lol for example: on the first book, it is all about fox commander x peac*ck commander and on the last book it is about monk x daozhang, the translator pointed it out and that was funny lol.

CHARACTERS 5/5: I personally kove the two main character. Cui Buqu was born with health conditions but he is very intelligent and has a good memory. His sick-man appearance became his advantage on his enemies because they lessen their guards on him and underestimate him. His body isn't capable of learning martial arts but his knowledge is so wide especially when planning and solving things that made this duo powerful when investigating a case. He has a tragic background and it was shown on one arc of the novel.

Feng Xiao's character is one of my fav. I love how he is narcissistic and anmoying esp to his partner and Cui Buqu even dream of him, sealing Feng Xiao's meridians to made him unable to move and just admire his beauty, he really doesn't like when he is talking, lmao. Feng Xiao is a germaphobe too, this just added more humor to the story. He is an op character here and I love him for that.

I wasn't fond of the side characters because they weren't always present on the scene just like Qian Xian and Pei Jingzhe.

I like the antagonist here, they are also op and intelligent like the two main character. They had a tragic background too just like Cui Buqu, I even cried when one of the amtagonist died on the novel.

COMEDY 5/5: The comedy here was great. I had a good laugh when reading the story especially when the two are bickering, although most of their argues are all about the case they are solving it is still hilarious. Their dynamics make it 10x hilarious, istg.

Overall, the story is awesome and will always held a special place in my heart. If I were given a chance to read it like it is my first timex I woukd grab that chance. Such a great novel, I hope there are novels like this too because this fits my taste!!! <<less

I truly enjoyed this novel. If you want a very explicit romance this is not for you. However this is novel has a couple with amazing chemistry. They are both intelligent and the exchanges they have with one another are truly energizing and full of tension (in a good way). You can feel the electricity crackling when the two of them are in the same room. They are for sure a power couple.

This novel is also a wonderful mix of politics, multiple mysteries to unwind a deep plot, history, and... more>> beautiful writing. If you enjoy complex plots and unraveling answers slowly as you go then this is a good story for you.

Also I really encourage reading Thousand Autumns before this piece. The two can be read individually but I feel you can appreciate the story more with the context of Thousand Autumns (which takes place in the same universe as Peerless). <<less
