Picked up by the Protagonist of a Tormented! MC Novel

Description

Links are NOT allowed. Format your description nicely so people can easily read them. Please use proper spacing and paragraphs.

A suffering MC novel—the main character must be forced to suffer, be oppressed until they’re hovering between life and death, dying and living here and there. They can have a golden finger, but before getting it they must pay the price. They can also have beautiful women, but all are snake and scorpion beauties, able to look at but not eat.

“Curse” is just that type of suffering MC novel. The main character Xi Wei, after being forced to experience numerous sufferings, had, at last, become the most powerful, at the same time linking together with the world’s qi and fate. After he was oppressed too miserably, he committed su*cide and buried the entire world with him.

Zeno transmigrated, in the end arriving at “Curse of sh*t motherf*cker”.

Zeno was adopted by the MC, finally becoming the number one person/wife.

Zeno: Help, I don’t want to be destined to be raised by this perverse person!

All living things (wipe away tears): You must rescue this world, ah.

Xi Wei: Come over here.

In terms of characterization this novel is rather perfect. The MC makes some hard decisions which are fully and logically considered, but based on emotions you'll empathize with. It'll make you wonder if you would have the same courage to risk everything, or simply be satisfied with the facade. It'll make you realize the unhealthiness of other supposedly romantic relationships involving yanderes. It'll raise the bar for satisfactory reading. You've been warned.

The characters, with their singular personalities and especially their weaknesses, are what make this novel a standout. The entire... more>> plot is driven by the MC's considerations of the ML before, during, and after he is put into a novel-within-a-novel framework. In other words, the MC accurately analyzes and understands all aspects of the ML while both of them push each other to grow physically and mentally.

The author/translator is a bit sloppy with unnecessary details about the setting, but that's a tiny criticism in comparison to the vividness of the characters and their actions. As with many long fantasy novels, there are several open-ended (minor) mysteries:

Spoiler
    • ID of MC's father and what happened to him
    • Who killed MC's mother
    • Specific description of the demon catalyst and how it affects the ML
    • What happens when Elf Queen Hua Li confronts Asil
    • How the remaining Shadow demons, especially Tang Yu, intend to deal with the MC
    • Why is Asil considered a princess
    • Will the ML ever say he loves the MC?

Highly recommend for those who enjoy BL, yandere, and true love. <<less

This novel ended in a confusing way for me, but I still loved reading it. I respect the decisions each character made. They may be s*upid, they may have been bad decisions, but I still respect them for giving their reasons for everything they did and in trying to fix things in what they thought was the best course of action.

These guys don't think like normal people and they didn't grow up like normal people, so the fact that they did things that make us normal people mad, is understandable.... more>> The people in this novel are far from perfect, but honestly? I like that. <<less

This story is very touching and sincerely. I love this. This is doesn't story about yandere who hate everyoneone and bulling and raping MC, until he get a Stockholm Syndrome. Their feelings are mutual and they realizing this close to the end. They spend 5 years in the childhood. ML raising small child while himself 11 years old child. Childhood in poverty was most emotional part of novel for me.

I like this traits of ML because his thought pretty reasonable.

, , For all in this life you must pay, you... more>> can't get anything free. You shouldn't expect help from other., ,

Also he is most hate betrayal. He is not fierce at all, doesn't hate anyone, he is indifferent for people, but close people important for him. With time he become better, he can say few words in conversation with outsider and think about love.

I like MC, usually character in such novels irritate, because it's nothing special, but they s*upid and can't do anything right. MC never complaining and always stays calm, make conclusions and think about solving problems. He doesn't genius, he make silly things, but I anyway have good impression about him.

This is doesn't about cultivation, ghosts or fights it's telling about relationships and life simple people. How two children trying to earn money for their survival, study at school and fall in love.

I love this because of mutual love which doesn't unexpectedly happened. I like main characters because I can understand them. And it was just cute, their relationship. <<less

To others, the part where they did it don't really felt like a r*pe to me. ML specifically ask MC what kind of death he wants and he himself said "r*pe first" and I was like dayum MC wanna get some before you go bye bye I see.

[collapse]

But really MC just wants the ML to reveal his true color; ruthless and cold. If its other 'normal' people would happen that to them they would ask for proper explanation after all that person has been with since childhood. ML has a massive paranoia if you still didn't know. MC just wants the ML to know that even he's that type of a person MC will still accept and love him wholeheartedly.
Spoiler

so as you can see MC was lock up but really though he actually has a way to get out of that mess. And besides the future of the continent lies on the hands of MC because ML would really destroy the whole continent because of MC's actions.

[collapse]

All in all, I love it. Although it's slow burn but if you read it you would realize how far the chapters that you already read. I'm so sad there's only few extras. And translator wouldn't translate the extras and even would take a million years to update like I'm getting impatient here, really the translators annoys me this time.

First of all I just want to say that this novel is a masterpiece everything is well through written the characters and how MC and ML become together and it's not that omg overbearing ceo you're mine it makes sense how they both fall inlove.

Spoiler

It has a slow start since both MC and ML are kids and I almost want to adopt them bcs how poor they are. ML don't really care about MC at the start but gradualy he starts caring for him more and more through the story. MC is not OP but he's really good and make sure to use his knowledge (Spoiler knowledge) to help ML to become powerful and avoid some shitty situations. Both are so good and every move they do have a sense.

You might become impatient since it's starts when they're are only kids but no the story really gets good and it's worth it and every character they meets have a meaning you will eventually know that through the story and what purpose they have and they are good too and all have motives to achive either good or bad and it explains how they betray ML (in the book)

I can understand ML too being so mad about MC when he baetrayed him but in the end they all good ahhh

[collapse]

I really like this so much this is different from the other BL novels that ive read so far It's so satisfying and I really love the ending I understand how author did that.

Spoiler

in the end they both comeback where they came from and start again

So yeah pls read this novel you will not regret it even I finish it I'm still waiting for the TL since I read it in chinese then use Engtl not MTL (I rlly cant understand the MTL one) <<less

I'm giving it 5 stars!

Everything starts off with the protagonist's life

Spoiler

I think that part left me with deep impression and it's not like any other novels where they just go describing how ill fate the protagonist life is, but the author give us a view of it and I really felt that. imagining Xi Wei carrying baby Zeno without any food to eat, and it's so cold out there It's just heartwrenching. Now I can't really blame Xi Wei for being detached to people. I hate how Hua Li and Xiao Wu calls him bastard when they don't know anything.. I know they are just kids but seriously? ugh oh I still hate them even now. kinda, Xiao Wu Jie Jie is fine but it just throws me off when she curse at Xi Wei.

[collapse]

So, for character analysis:

Zeno

Spoiler

MC who is addicted to Novels! like me than transport in it. Dream come true!! Zeno is a person who is closest to Xi Wei and I remembered how he sympatized with Xi wei when he's in modern world. I think he's a very nice character, nothing much to say, he's very rational, really great. I'm shocked when he suddenly betrays Xi Wei but not really betray him. lol. he used his knowledge from the book at the end of the story when he tricked bell while other MC who transmigrated in novels really is not able to use it that much.

[collapse]

Xi Wei

Spoiler

Our ML. I. WANT. HIM. TO. BE. MY. BROTHER. !! Seriously, he's so soft like when I saw how he treats baby Zeno that time is just- AHHHHHHHH IM CRYING HE'S JUST SO BEAUTIFUL FUDGE YOU AUTHOR OF CURSE! he really doesn't deserve all those scheming things that happened to him. so glad Zeno saved him. he's so distant and you really won't get any reaction from him. so cold but so fragile. the dubcon that happened at the end is really sad but the time he returned and listen to Suji, telling all the achievement of Zeno, I think he's proud of him.. in his lifetime he only trust Zeno then Zeno ended up betraying him it's the biggest blow buT Zeno does it for a reason. they mentioned pandora box, that time, I really felt like zeno betraying xi wei is just right, stimulating him kinda, because tbh if he really trust Zeno? he just won't hurt him and not listen to his explanation. Turning deaf. this time Xi Wei needs to open his eyes and listen or else he'll deeply regret it. in the end he saw everything using this ball, Xi Wei, I hope he heals. not so fast but with Zeno by his side, I know he'll be alright

[collapse]

Side Characters

Spoiler

hmm... Suji is the best waifu lol I wanna see her date Xi Wei's Friend! the villain, Belle, I feel bad for her, I hope she get together with the demon of plague. Xia An, became the king, just like that. I really don't get his character tbh, we didn't get the explanation behind his split personality why is he blind, where did QiQi come from, why is he so hostile to Xi Wei, Why is he cute and as*hole at the same time lol. Princess Asil, is a guy ik there will be a novel for his life and lovelife i'll read that later. I haven't heard anything from Jonia since then tho.. Also until know Xiao Wu doesn't know Zeno is Zeno lol in the end when sheheard about Xi Wei falling, her true nature shine she really didnt hate him even tho she calls him bastard so thats all good lol Hua Li, we knew she like princess asil but I really dont know the story behind that I think it will be mentioned in the other novel.. she's okay, but I really don't get her sometimes anyways idc hahaha... the harem, I only like suji lol Ah the cousin of Zeno, he's cool selfish thinks about shadow race all the time... I really dont care much either tbh

[collapse]

A good read! but kinda disappointed at side characters, I want to see more of what they've got but it ended too fast.

The insane man who kidnapped Zeno is the only worthy as*hole villain in the end he still didn't die lol the rest is ugh meh too many ~~ blah blah just fight and get killed but they're kinda bland for me. <<less

AN AMAZING STORY. I'm actually shocked at how much better it is than I thought. We REALLY see our protagonists struggle and grow, and the story progression is so realistic. Sure the protag has his golden fingers and he grows OP, but he's not overwhelmingly OP & in control at any stage except like the very end. All his achievements were won with blood, and the story actually goes into a lot of details about the painful parts of the process. Readers follow along in his sufferings and hardships, and... more>> in this way we really see the characters get forged in steel.

Characters: 5/5

Characters are amazing. Honestly, some more building of side characters would've been good, but it's okay. Also, it's kinda crazy that ML's personality could be like that even without all the betrayals throughout the way, but I guess it's just in his nature?

Plot: 5/5

A great twist on this popular premise. I love all stories that take this premise tbh, but this was one of the better ones. Just by knowing the plot points doesn't mean the protagonists don't go through suffering and hardships.

Writing & Translation: 5/5

Thanks to the translator for their hard work!!

Honestly, they touched a topic at the end that I have mixed feelings about. If a translator works hard at the story but real life commitments get in the way, of course real life is more important and they shouldn't stress themselves for the sake of translation. Therefore, slow translations are definitely forgivable and much appreciated. However, if another translator is willing to pick up the story and work at a much faster pace, I don't know that I feel the OG translator should definitely have the rights? In this case, the OG was already so close to the end so it makes sense, but generally speaking. Even if one group got it first, between 1ch/2month vs 1ch/5 days, I honestly think it's kinda selfish for OGs to keep insisting? That's just my take. <<less

The progress was extremely slow but it wasn't boring. I was shocked when I realized I was already on Volume 5 and I hadn't skimmed. It doesn't really focus on the romance till the later chapters which was amazing because we got a really good story to keep us going.

The MC is loyal to a fault. He's literally willing to do anything for the ML and we know why because they've been together since they were children.

Spoiler

I'm a big fan of "friends suddenly turn into more" trope, especially if it's a sudden development that both parties experience. Also the struggle with ML and the past with his mom and his inability to get intimate really tugged at my heartstrings especially when they had to figure out what that meant for their relationship.

Loved the story. Loved the characters, and it really reminded me of SVSSS which I loved so of course I love this too <<less

It's an incredibly riveting story. The MC enters the story as a newborn baby and truly integrates into his harsh environment, trying his best to survive in the arms of his beloved protagonist, who's only a few years older than him. You can really feel their relationship (and lives) build from scraps and it's absolutely heartwarming and a page-turner. The descriptions integrate you into a hostile environment, where it's every person for themselves. It doesn't hesitate to push you into the grim environment, where tensions are high and death seems... more>> immanent for beggars, especially a child beggar trying to raise an infant by himself. You can feel their struggles, their pain, their desperation... and it just draws you in. It's not all pain and suffering either, you'll fall in love with their sweet moments, their funny moments, and their complete sense of belonging with each other build up from years of survival and trust tests. Just when you think one thing is going to happen, suddenly someone from the plot shows up and changes their direction. I was drawn in by the story instantly, and I hope you give it a try too.

Bless the author and translator for giving us this incredible story. <<less

I like the premise of the story but the translation needs quite a bit of work. The tenses constantly flip back and forth between present and past, and the descriptions used are bare-bones. I like the dialogue, it's fairly varied and you can feel the personality in most of them making it easy to differentiate who is speaking.

I give it about a 3/5 simply for the fact that the story seems entertaining while the translation could do with a good editor.

Initially I thought that the background setting was a mish mash of all sorts. At first I had gotten modern vibes, then steampunk/dystopia, then guild/adventure, then magic/knight academy. I feel like a lot of things happened and now that I think back on it, they weren’t well explained plot points. The only thing that made me really enjoy this story was seeing MC/ML’s relationship with each other. I’m a strong sucker for codependency and slice of life.

Complete (100% read) Highly recommended, Its rare to see a character focused story that fully understands how a f*cked Up Codependency plays out over a lifetime. This story does a fantastic job of showcasing its characters and how their motivations conflict and yet still are from a place of (honestly horrifying) love. I really enjoyed the care taken to show both the internal thoughts/desires of the MC&ML pair as well as how their relationship is seen by outsiders/secondary characters. Genuinely a really well executed story. However, do not read this... more>> looking for any trace of a traditional transmigration story. It understands its genre, but its definitely not a typical trope fest. If you are down for a complex character driven story, this is it. Also bring tissues.

Extremely unsatisfactory. As a story it’s very good and the characters are excellent but the relationship between the MC and ML is awful. The ML is a stone cold b*tch. You would think raising a child every step of the way would make the ML love the MC but nope. The ML can’t wait to abandon the bc at the first chance, constantly and consistently viewing him as a burden. This should not be a BL because their relationship is horrible. It should’ve just been a normal story. Really bad... more>> relationship in that the ML couldn’t care less for the MC. <<less

This is a story about how a modern man from the 21st century suddenly transmigrates into his favorite novel after reading the final chapter of it, which was a bad ending. He possesses the body of a minor baby character who first appeared in the early parts of the novel, which the original protagonist/male lead encountered. The male lead adopts him as his child, and they spend their journeys growing up and surviving together.

To start this review off, I really liked the main character during my whole reading session of... more>> this novel. It wasn’t an intense sort of like, and it was not the kind of like because he was super well-written or anything like that. He was simple and not as complicated as a character I wished he was. But it’s also not like he didn’t develop either, so there’s really nothing to nitpick about. But that “like” immediately disappeared towards the ending. His developed traits, personality, and just his whole general character suddenly evaporated in the ending. It seems like the author suddenly forgot how to write the main character of her 80+ chaptered novel.

The characters were one-dimensional, no doubt. The author was trying way too hard in making them seem complicated or complex, but it just didn’t work out. They were not developed properly at all; their backgrounds were not defined, and not even the important characters in the original novel were spared at all by this treatment. But at the same time, I cannot deny that they had depth and some surface of development. But it wasn’t enough for them to actually be considered well-rounded and well-written characters.

Take the male lead as an example; he was such a bore and iceberg from the start, and throughout the story, he remained like that. I was definitely dissatisfied with his character, but I thought that it would be tolerable at least. Until his character suddenly became unbearable in the last 3 or 4 chapters??? Don’t get me started on the part where he was okay with dating the main character when the latter was only like what 8-9 years old while he himself was almost nearing 20??? Insane. I legitimately thought that the romance would not start until both of them were legal age, but that thought was already unbearable to begin with. Their relationship in the beginning was so cute and pure; this novel would have become better if the relationship between the male lead and the main character was that of a father-son pair in which the male lead has a soft spot for his child. But no, knowing that their relationship would eventually become romantic was dreading honestly, but I kept reading because I was curious to what was gonna develop.

The side characters were also not that exceptionally special, but there are some who stood out to me. I am just so sad and frustrated that they were not even adequately addressed properly or developed enough. Some of them even had ambiguous endings or conclusions that leave the readers with a sense of unsatisfactory.

The early parts of the novel, especially in volume 1, were so interesting to read. Although some readers might hate the slow development, in which I initially did too, honestly. But that development was what precisely kept me from continuing to read because I was invested to know what would happen next. You can tell the author really put care and love into writing the 1st volume; although it was still a bit lacking, you can still sense that it was written carefully. But starting from volume 2, the quality suddenly decreased and became even more lacking. Instead of explaining events in detail, the author started to use the “time-skip” method of avoiding writing. You could tell they became bored with the work and stopped caring. Especially starting from volume 3 and onwards, everything went downhill from there in my opinion. In volume 4 and 5? Oh, don’t even ask. EVERYTHING became a mess, and it just started to get frustrating towards the ending of volume 4. Everything kept dragging on that you just want to shake the author’s shoulders and ask what they were thinking??? Like why. Especially the super-duper rushed development towards the ending like OH DON’T EVEN. The ending was so bad. It was so shitty. It left such a bad taste in my mouth and made me feel unpleasant all over. I really could not believe it was the same story I was reading 15 chapters ago.
Spoiler

the way the protagonist had no f*cking reason to betray the male lead??? Yeah, yeah, I know it’s because it’s to remove any pretenses or fake masks between them, but that was the most shitty choice ever. I could not fathom how he even thought of that as a conclusion. And the r*pe request too like???? Am I reading that right like did the author actually think that was okay and published it?? Or did the translator put it like that and thought it was okay???

[collapse]
And to be completely honest, the translator’s quality wasn’t even that good. Some sentences or wordings were so confusing to comprehend at times. But kudos to them because I really could see the hard work they put into this novel and the determination to finish it until the end.

It was going so good at first, but it fell off so hard at the middle and end. All-in-all, I have said everything that needs to be said about this novel. Such a waste of time. You could spend it by reading better novels. Definitely not recommended. I still cannot comprehend how people were satisfied by that ending??? Absolutely mad. <<less

it's been a while since ive read the end of this novel. So I can't say it with a lot more emotion than when I just finished it. But I'll type out what I remember I felt about it

Overall thing I can say about it is that it's a really good read on my end ☺️

would like to thank author and translator for this till the very end

... more>> it was wonderful, you'll be fully immersed in the world and their day to day life (specifically at the start)

there was one review that made me brace for a bad or mediocre ending and I did saw the part where they meant about it. I can say that what the author did at the end or the reason/ intention of the author at the end (or what lead to the end part) was great. I guess maybe due to them stopping on writing it for a long time and then continued it for the sake of her readers did make it feel rushed or the execution of the idea not fully finalized for some. (I liked it by the way cause I cried like hell lol) but it was still great

vague spoiler ahead

Spoiler

so for explanation to some people as to why it ended that way (and this is what stick to me the most, sorry if it's bad bec it's been so long since ive read it)

it's because MC didnt want both of them to put up some mask between them if theyre gonna start being together. Masks being: MC being this good person who'll do anything/follow anything ML asks he just did it to survive or aka never betray him and ML being this good cool aloof figure wholl be there for MC and protect him.

MC wanted to be open and free with no doubts about their relationship. No doubts with one another.

cause we all know, even tho we all ship them there's this weird layer of them pretending or some sort even tho we know they've catched feelings in the long run.

if you can tell, ML has this thinking of everyone will betray him so he doesnt trust anybody, even MC. There are times he trusts MC more than others but it's not exactly fully trust, I cant explain it well.

it's more like: when there's a couple and one of them is always doubtful or has trust issues. So even if they're getting along, this skeptical person will just wait until something bad happens and then the untrustful person will say "see, this is why I didnt want to trust you because I'll know this will happen" like they're expecting something bad to happen from the start when theyre not exactly fully in the moment in their relationship lol I cant explain well but I hope you get the gist

MC wanted a fresh start, no more masks, no more pretending etc. Just freely and fully trust one another.

and I guess the method author thought of was to break their facade of them being this thing lol. And by MC showing ML that he can break his trust or something but not really (based on the video he saw that showed everything he did for him while he was K.O.) lol idk anymore that part felt rushed but it was a great way to fix it in a fast way cause I was already crying at that point hahaha 😂 bravo for author for saving the end part even tho method felt kinda rushed haha

[collapse]

welp anyway it's a great read for me. It might not be for some. But I dont think it's the worst or bad either.

i wont exactly compare it to something like 'the reader and protagonist definitely have to be in true love' but either way I enjoyed it <<less

I..I feel so thoroughly unpleasant after I've completed it. Even though one might argue that it had a happy ending after all. Don't get me wrong I've read a variety of things before, things one would deem extreme. But I haven't felt as unpleasant before, sure I've felt disappointed, bored, thrilled but not this unpleasant. I feel I must be missing something major when I read all the other reviews but I can't comprehend how anyone would even begin to enjoy this. Anyway, the translator has done an amazing job... more>> so there's that. That's probably the only pro I can think of.

Spoiler

The relationship initially could be considered wholesome as long as one fools themselves to forget that they're going from a father-son relationship to an inevitable lovers' one. I can stomach a lot of things but I just couldn't for the life of me feel good at any point in the romance, even in those moments that are supposed to be cute/fluffy. So many things unexplained so little transition that I would hope to ease the relationship into a natural romantic one. The characters seem complex, except their complexity is never given any backstory which just makes everyone really unlikable. The MC sucks, he's weird as f*ck and not to mention the ML. Peas in a pod. It takes the route of the typical dog blood drama towards the end. Really doesn't help what the story has become already. Ultimately it's just my opinion which I understand here isn't very objective but I just wanted to put it out there for someone willing to listen.

Thanks for your hard work translating~

I would say this was a 8.5/ 10 for me. I feel like this is a more bitterly emotional novel with great details. A bit of angst Not much fluff but very straightforward and things make sense.

the only thing I wish for was more Developments on what happened with the side characters and fluffy moments between main characters so I can bathe in sweetness and be content. I definitely recommend and I'll reread often.

I wish with all my heart that 4.5 was an option. I loved this novels so much. It was captivating, the MC was interesting, the ML was interesting, the plot was interesting. Basically, the entire novel was amazing — enticing, enjoyable, and not at all cliché. But not perfect.

It honestly felt too short. Everything moved very quickly and I felt so much more could have been addressed and explained. Such as, the world the novel took place in. There was not much explanation aside from when the MC and ML were involved in and I felt there could have been so much more world building. I also thought that each volume/arc was rushed through as well, when there could have been more — more action, more characters, more character building, more explanation of the lore.

But what really could have used more effort was the romance. It had always been hinted at in some way, but it was only in the last two volumes the author really shone a light on it. And, to clarify, it didn't feel like 1-100. Instead, it was more like a one-sided love that jumped into a relationship somehow. The ML did not really show any major signs of love rather than possessiveness. Not to mention, the entire betrayal plot line felt unnecessary and just a way for the author to wrap up their threads of feelings. That was just unrealistic — and honestly didn't leave me with amazing feelings regarding the main couple. Their relationship felt shallow; not really a relationship between lovers but more a relationship between two people dependent on each other.

I did think that the untrusting ML was realistic, but I wished it was resolved differently. Still, I loved it and would recommend. The slow burn was great as was the MC's drive to ensure the ML lived a better life than in the original. But, be warned, there is a small section of confinement and dubious consent.

I really liked this story, but the ending threw me off, and that last extra especially threw me off.

I really loved the story, the characters, the mystery. I thought the author and translator did a really good job of bringing the transmigrated story to life. I loved the first part when they're relying on each other and randomly nice people to survive. I also liked the middle where they finally seemed to catch a break.

But then the author seemed to speed write the ending in a way that made me... more>> question the main characters. Does one person really need to sacrifice all of themselves and break another's trust in order to change the other's personality and fears? What's wrong with living a life of pretending if both parties are happy? I think the author has bought deeply into the belief that all horrors and slights a person suffered has to be dredged up and psychoanalyzed for a person to be happy. But I don't think that's true - sometimes, a person is much happier ignoring some things than confronting it. I don't need my fear of heights or needles cured. I can live happily even if I can't tightrope or get a shot without looking away. I know some people wouldn't be OK living with that fear, and that's ok - it's their decision to seek help. Help isn't forced on them in the most traumatizing, easily misunderstood way possible.

I also didn't understand the purpose of the pandora's box metaphor. How did he give anyone hope?

Anyways, for me, the good outweigh the bad in this story. The translator was very nice and did a good job. The story was interesting and the characters vivid. <<less
