Players Think I’m a Demon God

Ranen, in a twist of fate, found himself transported into the body of a hapless soul who had just escaped from a fire, inheriting a second life and an inhuman beauty.

Sounds like a jackpot start, just short of reaching the pinnacle of life, right?

Indeed, Ranen thought so too, if it weren’t for the existence of ‘K-series’ dark gods in this world.

#Monsters seem to really like him#

#Question: In such a world, being a heartthrob, do I still have hope?#

Ranen had given up, quietly awaiting death in a nightmarish hospital, when someone stumbled into his world, willing to pay with their life just to see him survive.

Ranen was deeply moved, until he came across a gaming forum.

#Just died, sharing my new wife with everyone. I’ve become the moonlight in my wife’s eyes!#

#…Something’s not right, run! Your wife is clearly a dark god!#

Ranen: ?

Wow, huh, I didn't expect this novel to have already been translated (or been taken up for translating) since it wasn't super popular in the Chinese community. This is quite possibly one of my all time favorites and I was planning to do it myself, but since it's already being done, I'm just glad that it is being recognized and will send this to my friends so they can finally read it:D

Edit: Ok, so looks like this is machine translated with editing. In that case, I would like to still... more>> take up the project after checking in with the original author. The least I can promise is the inconsistencies with character names will be fixed and will be the most accurate version as intended by the author. <<less

I haven't finished it, I'm writing this review because it's one of the rare good novels people should really try out, even if the ending might not be my thing.

Personal rating up to where I read: 5 stars.

The writer is not only talented, they actually know how to write.

... more>> I'm quite impressed with how they handled certain aspects, got around plain repetitions of information and plot points that might have been forgotten/overlooked by some readers after 100+ chapters, and other things.

Characters are diverse, have likes and dislikes, live even when MC isn't around, have their own relationships that are progressing in the background, etc.

The mystery is layered, interesting, and builds up over time, everything stays consistent, internal logic is preserved, and the mix of different mythologies and religions is done very well.

MC is OP, and I mean God-level OP, you know he's going to win, there's no suspense.

Instead, the players and NPCs are where the stakes are at.

That way, MC's absolute OPness is perfectly fine, expected even, it doesn't take away from the thrill of battles and worry you have about central characters.

Characterisation is one of the highlights.

There are very little 100% good people, most are grey, even central characters have massive flaws, kill and commit crimes, because it's what they think needs doing.

They don't get whitewashed or change, being like that is part of their core personality.

Spoiler

One of MC's strongest believers is a gang boss, he kills, tortures, committed numerous crimes, and continues to do so.

On the other hand, he protects his city and the people who either paid for protection, or are worth saving, because that city is his home and he does what has to be done to fight for its existence.

All of MC's believers are similar, they might be "good" deep down but still get revenge, or complete madman who only listen to MC, they all do what they want to and think is right.

[collapse]

Considering that the novel takes place in an insane, brutal and lawless world, this is exactly like people should be.

There are a lot of comments/chats, something I usually hate, and it's indeed annoying for a while, because it's nothing but "omg MC is so good-looking/he's my wife" etc.

But that changes, the development is in-line with MMORPGs, from the initial clowning to more and more plot-relevant things, players planing, speculating, and so on.

Nearly everything has substance, it either adds some humour, fleshes out characters, gives hints or theories, or is an actual part of the plot.

Very well done, especially to people who took part in the birth and development of MMORPGs.

Nostalgic and real, if you can hold on until the nonsense stops.

Objective rating is 4 stars, mainly because of two things.

Pacing.

The novel is split into arcs and cities, while the first one is done extremely well and kept me up until 6am, the ones after that are rushed.

Part one takes around 100 chapters, the novel has only 266, the second city takes only around 30, and so on.

It's not enough time to make use of the location and story connected to it, everything feels pretty rushed and the connection you should have with certain characters just doesn't develop.

I think the writer just had more fun with the first and didn't have the patience to slog through the middle part of the story that acts more as a connection to the ending, and isn't a big highlight like the first.

Understandable from a writer's perspective, not great for a reader.

Second point, romance.

I've seen this being a rather big point in Chinese comments and have to agree, the novel would have been better without it.

MC and ML interact maybe every 30 chapters for three sentences, there's no buildup, their sudden romantic interest comes out of nowhere.

And before anything can develop, ML is gone for quite a long time.

Spoiler

There's nothing romantic, no real feelings, it seems more like their reason for "being in love" is, that they've been together for centuries.

But we see nothing of that, it's told to us, what we see are a handful of shallow interactions like eating together and ML being a silent decoration next to MC.

ML has no character, we know nothing about him, he has less screentime than minor characters.

[collapse]

Don't read it for romance, I would say try to ignore it.

Give it a chance if you like grand mysteries, legends, religions, battles, gore and horror, a brutal world with equally complex characters, power dynamics, and rather professional writing.

MTL: You technically can if you are willing to cross-check with a dictionary, but some sentences make little sense and player names can lead to very funny ones.

Spoiler

A nice example: "God said with a smile at the corner of the human mouth". The player's name is "God on earth", which can be read as "God in the human world", and that leads to hilarious MTL-results.

[collapse]

Translation on here: Haven't read.

Translating yourself: I would say it's around B2, maybe lower if you are dedicated enough to look up a lot of things. I'm around that level and mix it with MTL during slow sections (because I'm lazy), but specific parts, like the mythological passages, player chats and battles, definitely need at least a good dictionary or solid language skills.

If your Chinese isn't great, I suggest waiting for the translation or using G. Translate + Baidu for everything you don't understand. <<less

Reviewing as I read because I wanted to comment on the translations.

There are two translations sites, one by Shanghai Fantasy and another by Asiannovel.

Asiannovel's translation is done with AI/MTL with minimal editing but is still readable. However, names are butchered and there's not much difference from mtling the novel yourself if you have a good translation app. If you aren't familiar with some slangs there'll be missing context, but it's still better than google translating.

Shanghai Fantasy I'm assuming has a translator editing AI/MTL. Their translations are good, but some footnotes... more>> have inaccurate information. Since their paywall prices is higher than the official source, I'd hope that it's at least accurate but there were a few footnotes that lost the original text's meaning. If the translator isn't sure of the meaning, it's better to not have a footnote instead of supplying readers with wrong information. Not getting paid for this, but listing out some of the more important footnotes I think needs correction.

  • "Muggles", footnoted as "players" is a word from Harry Potter refering to common people/people without magic. It refers to the players in a sense, but the author used it to dumb down the non-magical players' intellect as a joke.
  • "Baba Hao", footnoted as "Big banana", is pronounced as "Hi Daddy" in chinese. There's a scene where the player kept pushing for MC to call his ID name "Daddy" (not in a s*xual manner) but MC calls him Mr Hao instead. His friends are named "Yeye Hao (Hi Grandpa) " "Shushu Hao (Hi Uncle) " as a recurring pun. Footnoting the translation as "Big Banana" and not footnoting "Hao" made the joke lose it's meaning.
  • I'm not sure if leaving out full phrases of gaming abbreviations is intentional, but I want to point out that "GM" (Gamemaster), and "KP" (Keeper) shouldn't have the same footnote meaning since the author is referring to different types of admins. "KP" is especially important to note because it's a reference to "Keeper of the Arcane Lore" from a lovecraft inspired game the author drew large references from.
  • "CGs"s footnote fits the word "Modules" more. "CG" (Computer Graphics) refers to cutscenes in the context of usage.
  • "XP" is confused as "EXP". "XP" is a chinese slang for "Aesthetics" (XingPi). The slang is used to describe someone's appearance so translating it into experience points doesn't make sense.
  • "Pan" footnoted as a "commonly used chinese word refering to overflowing rivers" is the name of a Shepherd god in Greek Mythology. In a chapter, voices were calling out a God's name, not calling for water.
These are notes up to chapter 50 since the advance chapters are currently behind paywall. Usually I wouldn't comment on footnotes since they are extras, but since this novel's main setting is a humorous lovecraft inspired game, giving context to some phrases is important to carry the joke and meaning across. In any case each chapter is really long so kudos to the translator for picking this up. Footnotes aside, everything is well edited and translated.

As for the story itself, it's off to a great start. It's like a mash up of <I'm really not the Demon God's Lacky> and <God of Horror>, with a overarching lovecraft theme. The reason why it's not as popular in JJ is probably because of the copyright from referencing so many IPs. However, it's very engaging and interesting. I'll edit my review as I continue.

Currently : Pausing at chapter 151 since the novel is really long and I got a bit tired of researching the references. If you are a fan of Harry Potter, H.P Lovecraft, DND sort of plots this novel reuses a lot of their settings in a interesting way so I highly reccomend it if you are a fan. Usually when reusing settings of existing IPs some authors lack a certain touch to make their story original, but this author did an excellent job at writing scenarios in her own way. Just, I'm not the biggest fan of DND/tabletop roleplaying games so I need to take a break from all the information load. Will definitely come back to continue since this is too good to be dropped. <<less

This is frickin hilarious XD

A real gem of a story.

Even if you're only vaguely aware of lovecraftian horror stories, as I am, you really get s**ked in.

... more>> The world building is fantastic!

The romance is practically non existent for at least the first 100 chapters, but you don't mind as that is not the point. The point is watching all the hijinks the players get into while pursuing their collective "wife" and building his empire. XD

This is probably one of the few novels where I don't mind the online mob commentary because it honestly feels like a bunch of players sitting around a DnD table creating off the wall backstory, while the DM just sits back and rolls with it. <<less

I managed to complete it!!!

The story has a different point of view, like someone else mentioned, the protagonist seems like a passer-by most of the time, and the main characters are more like the players of the game.

MC Lann is strong from the start, but he grows even stronger and slowly learns about the reason behind his powers.

Lann and ML's relationship develops quite late, and they only get together at the end of the official story.

Spoiler

ML is Ogrier

personally, I was interested in amos x lann because I read LOTM and loved that ship lmao

[collapse]

My favourite player is.... God in the Human World! I love how the story describes in detail how the players overthrow all the plot and schemes of the evil gods, and this player in particular shines to me. His charisma spreads across my phone screen hahaha

Lastly, about the extras. For those dissatisfied by the lack of romance in the main story, the extras can only satisfy it barely. But if you love seeing how the players interact, it'll be fantastic! I love the growth from players seeing NPCs as dispensible to being so protective of them

Spoiler

My favourite extras:

When Lann goes to the human world and does an impromptu photoshoot at an anime convention (everyone was so shocked I wish they knew it was the real Lann)

When the players realised that the skills they obtained in the game translated into real life (it highlights how the game is not just a vr game but an actual other world that the players experienced)

[collapse]

This story is more focused on action (characters battling against oddities), adventure (characters exploring gameplay and different maps), and fantasy (cthulu, lovecraft), and not so much on the romance. But if you're not feeling in the mood for over-the-top, mind numbing, cavity inducing bl fluff, this is great! This is good for readers who wished that LOTM had bl XD <<less

It's so good. The translation is funky but it's easy enough to read. Names won't be the same every time they appear but you figure it out.

Don't read it for romance. It's only in the background and only visible if you're looking through a microscope.

My only complaint is that it ends abruptly. Main villain is defeated in the like last paragraph and that's it.

I need extras. I want to see the MC and ML together. I want to see what happens after the beta stage ends.

Currently still on first arc, but I can't help making review because this novel is one of the rare gem that I can find on horror theme novel.

Unfortunately romance is pretty much not here as of my reading, (still speculating who's the ML is because everyone have other side to them), but I adore the characters, the plot and the mysteries.

Lann is just an unfortunate, normal human soul that got transmigrated into a supremely beautiful man after his death and with a lot of twist and turn he was... more>> dubbed the malevolent god by everyone lmao.

The side characters have their own story and important parts on the story, and doesn't really feel like paper characters, which I love.

While the side side characters like the game players act more like a comic relief, they too sometimes have assisted Lann on his adventure (that he did not even wish to get involved with in the first place 😄).

Overall on my reading experience I have been very happy and hooked on the story. The misunderstanding makes things more light on the horror aspect too. It can sometimes be sad, sometimes scary, and sometimes comedic, but I truly enjoyed it. Love Lann my boy with his ability to play along with the misunderstanding 😊 <<less

After the first section of the story the MC is more of a side character, he observes everybody else and act as the audiences pov for what's going on but his existence is the literal deus ex machina of the story, he's the God that comes in last minute when everyone else has done their best and all hope seems lost to fix the situation. It's an amusing way to tell the story at least for the first city's story. The chat rooms are arguably the best part of the... more>> story. The biggest problem I found was the lack of romance because there was potential there that just wasn't tapped into. <<less

Stories with the premise of madness, horrors beyond comprehension... it has to be said that the author is toes a fine line of confusing their readers by trying to immerse them or lacks any stakes for readers to be invested in. There is abstract foreshadowing - context clues given by the author for future events or world building is vague and it's hard to tell if the author even knows where the story will go, but it's executed well enough because there is payoff. The Player characters are fun, and... more>> have their own moments in the spotlight. Any suspense in the scenario is told rather than shown. Though the intrigue surrounding our unreliable narrator is well founded.

I don't have strong criticisms, I recommend giving it a try.

Below are titles I've recommended...

Spoiler

Legendary Mechanic. The same premise of being transmigrated into a native NPC of a game world, even as going as far back to the 'start' of the game. The Player's inscrutable behavior and the maintenance times where the Players are absent is similar. Renren's gains traction due to misunderstandings, whereas Han Xiao reaps benefits through deceit. I look forward to Renren's development considering his actions ultimately derailed the 'original' plot of the game by ch54.

How the Cult Saves the World. Revelof/Levithan builds up a religious group in disadvantageous circumstances, and with unfavorable opposition of another group. This title is more European fantasy.

Became an Infinite Game Beauty NPC. Ruan Qing is heavily beauty coded with a constitution that attracts troublesome people. There are live streaming elements, and a comment barrage spamming obscenities about his appearance. Regardless of the cards stacked against him, Ruan Qing wants to fight for his survival. Another similarity is that Ruan Qing and Renren both have a similar hypnosis skill. Be warned, Ruan Qing always gets harassed in some form or another.

Rise of the Othergod Apostle: Not a Cult Leader, but a Serf?! Fabio is cowardly protagonist who ends up transmigrating into a deadly setting. The end is near and the misunderstandings are built on Fabio's overthinking.

The Artist Who Paints Dungeon. The human art teacher Gio, gets caught up in a phenomena where he's become a haunted painting. His human identity parallels Renren's one. He's compelled to make contact with the outside world after years have passed since his transformation. Gio, a pallor beauty with an alienating aura that leaves others guessing his true nature. Both he and Renren desire a quiet life, but the essence of their true nature evokes misunderstandings.

Welcome to the Nightmare Live. Wen Jianyan... this title is more of a guilty pleasure to recommend. The only thing similar is the genre~

Lord of the Mysteries. Klein is embroiled in the supernatural after a miraculous encounter. The Beyonders have different levels to their abilities, utilize artifacts, hosts strange rituals and spells. Both also reference Cthulu mythos.

I’ve read this story countless times but it still manages to captivate me. The world building and emotional connection is top notch. The romance kicks in a bit at the end, but I still thought it was cute.

10/10 would completely read this again

AAAAAAA I LOVE IT SO MUCH!! It has more horror-ish elements in the beginning but by the end its all mythos. To be honest, I prefer the earlier half of the novel since all-out mythology was never a big interest of mine but I still loved the whole thing (you can also see a fair bit of research into the 'lovecraftian' bits and the author doesnt skimp on detail.

one thing to note is that the novel is MTLed with some kind of editing? The grammar is actually very smooth, but... more>> be warned that names are inconsistent. For example, Ranen (as it is in the summary) also pops up as Lan En, Lanen, Lann, Lan, Laine, Lain, etc (I prefer Lan), while player God On Earth pops up as Divinity amongst men, shen zai ren, and similar renditions. Other notable ones are
Spoiler

the universities. There are only two!! One starts with B, the other with M. I assume its supposed to be michigan institute of tech as MIT pops up, but it is also called miskatonic, mythic, michigan, MU, and other renditions starting with M

last is Lan's helper/caretaker/love interest (explicitly suggested but the book ends before any development) who pops up as Ogur and Augur and some other words that sound similar to 'ogre'

[collapse]

anyways as long as you can follow along with the text, context clues make it clear who is being referred to

my favorite part is definitely the player antics (Black Cat ily). Not only is there canon shipping and stated fanworks amongst the forums, since the kind-of-holographic-game-but-real?? (Actually, no clear resolution to that) allows for a lot of freedom in action, they literally can do anything.

Spoiler

some of the ones I rmb best are (heavy spoilers lol)

to prevent a minority tribe from getting evicted from their land, the players set up a global anti-racism movement with a ripoff of the I have a dream speech- in a 'previous timeline', the main speaker in this movement is elected president

becoming conmen and blatantly infiltrating other organizations' high ranks while livestreaming all their confidential meetings

one of them drew straight up yellow illustrations to facilitate an information network

getting the president to literally nuke a demonic entity

[collapse]

and ofc since players cant die (their avatar will, but they can make new charas), I love the way other npcs view them as crazy fanatics

ANYWAYS I just love how unique the novel is. The ending isnt the most satisfying to me (im a sucker for identity reveals, and lan never gets that lol) and im really curious how the story would hypothetically unfold after the 'beta' testing is done. Then again, none of the extras are translated so maybe that is addressed. This has definitely shot up to one of my all time favorites fdtshgj <<less

This novel is really entertaining.

It has suspense, an op MC..... and mad people who aren't mad and non mad people who are mad.......

  • I read this novel like all day and even at night. It's scary sometimes....... like in the night and more scary when in night you hear something falling down or the voice of people which happen to me.
  • I am still thinking of continuing this till the end and wish that it won't end quickly as I read.
  • For now there is not much of any rom com. I purely come here to read bl rom com and experience horror but I can't find rom com......!! I want the ML and MC to intrac more. I think ogeir is the ML there are other love interests but they don't seems to be suitable. I am rooting for Oran ship. But it doesn't matter if it becomes gangb
  • For me it's 4 and half. Or 5 but I press the wrong stars now I can't change it.....
  • I recommended it to every one who like enchanting MC filled with beauty that even a glance can make you obsessed. MC is a really beautiful entity which I really like every one is charmed by him old or young, man or women, animals or humans,

OH MY GOD!!! Everything everyone says in the reviews is right.

Novel has perfect mix of horror, LOTM vibes + also conspiracy and it’s easy to follow along!! I love the characterisation of the main character - who I agree, is more of a ‘bystander’ most of the time to the plot processes.

There’s very little romance and it only appears in extras pretty much, so I wouldn’t go in thinking this is a romance novel at all. IMO ORV has more tension that this lol

But I love the overarching theme and... more>> message behind this novel!! Because yes, while gods and demons and mystic rituals exist in this VR world, the most important message in the end is humanity relying on humanity.

I got chills in the last arc fr...

So much happens so fast that I kept thinking ??? What’s left now after this - only for something even bigger to get enrolled out.

This is also a rare case of the author being good at writing AS well as amazing at conceiving plot.

The only downside is that the translation is obviously just AI translated or something like that so the names get shifted but you can tell who is who still. HIGGGHHHLLYYY recommend. <<less
