The emperor Heraith Yorun Kellenhan, infamous for his nasty temper, pickiness, and extreme workaholism. And then there’s Lucian Astro, the legendary chief aide, even more of a workaholic, known for flawlessly handling all tasks. Hiding his feelings under a stoic facade, Lucian has been serving loyally, until one day, after yet another scandal involving the emperor, he finally couldn’t take it anymore. He tosses in his resignation and sets himself free.

“Ah, quitting feels so good!”

With light steps, he walks out of the palace.

**

But then…

“Chief of Staff! Please come back, I’m going to die without you.”

“Lucian, the empire is in chaos. Please, we beg you, save us.”

“Lucian, Lucian, please!”

“Lucian, I can’t manage without you. Please, come back.”

“No.”

“I’ll do anything you want. I’ll raise your salary.”

“Make it five times higher.”

“Fine. Ten times higher.”

“…What?”

Reluctantly, moved by their pleas, Lucian returns with an incredible salary boost.

**

But…?

Is it just his imagination, or is His Majesty hovering around him more than ever?

“What’s going on with you and that guy?”

“Huh? We’re just working together.”

“…”

And now he’s interfering with everyone Lucian meets for work.

“Aren’t you dressed a little too nicely? Who are you trying to impress?”

“Excuse me? Today’s schedule is exclusively with Your Majesty.”

“…”

Unlike before, he starts picking on the most ridiculous things.

“Why are you smiling at that guy?!”

“Well, should I frown at the visiting king? We should be hospitable to the visiting envoys.”

“…”

Oh, come on, what’s gotten into him all of a sudden?!

“I can’t take this anymore; I’m quitting again!”

Lucian decides to escape His Majesty’s constant interference once more.

And then…

“Lucian, you’ll never get away from me!”

What follows is a thrilling(?) suspenseful(?) romantic(?) chase, with Heraith relentlessly pursuing Lucian to the ends of the continent—or even to the depths of hell.

“Please! Just let me quit already!”

Very cute and slow burn.

Some might say that how the ML treat MC like someone who will be there all the time, but I like how the drama of wife chasing once MC decided to leave ML and be gone for good.

I can't fairly rate this book, purely because my expectations going in were so different from the summary. And I know usually the summary is very, very different from the actual book, but I do feel a bit disappointed.

I must say however that the translators did an amazing job! Kudos to them!

I expected that there would be some exposition about how Lucian served the emperor and then what caused him to want to leave the emperor's service, but I expected that to be 10 chapters maximum and then go on... more>> to the actual plot, which was the emperor regretting how he treated him and then some wife chasing. A bit of "wow, I treated him like dirt but wow he really was amazing and I was an idiot".

Instead, this starts from the beginning and goes through the entirety of Lucian's service to the emperor.

And its not that the Emperor never made a move. He does so, regularly. Often with Lucian being unwilling.

The linchpin of what made me drop this is the dubious consent/r*pe that happened. Now, I don't have a problem with r*pe in fiction, but this one just felt a little offputting, purely for how unexpected it was, timeline wise.

I honestly just do not know how to feel about this novel. Its like everything just happens too fast. <<less
