Once upon a time, there was a swordsman who wielded the sword, lived by the sword, and died by the sword.

After days and months of battle, the swordsman chose death by his own free will, but was reborn as Fay Hanse Diestburg, the third prince of the kingdom of Diestburg.

Wanting to distance himself from his past life where he lived as if possessed by the sword, Fay decided to just lead a life of a wastrel, earning the nickname: “tr*sh Prince”.

However, one day, because of a pact with the neighboring kingdom’s Afillis royal house, Fay is sent to war, leading reinforcement troops. On the battlefield, Fay witnesses a scene of despair, as the “Hero”, an existence possessing power rivaling tens of thousands, ravaged the battlefield.

Fay considered returning to the kingdom, but a certain knight’s death manages to shake his heart, thus he decided to wield the sword once again — the legend of the strongest lazy prince begins!

It does seem like the MC is essentially a chuunibyou kid who talks about "his shadow, evil past, " and his "uncontrollable power that he can't control, " like a 14 year old kid would do, but apparently he's actually gone through them. You can kind of tell how ridiculous the story is trying to be trying to fabricate a coming of age or otherwise "deeply psychological" novel about said MC.

I actually find the premise to be fine. After all, other shows and series have executed a similar theme. Gintoki... more>> from Gintama, for instance, possesses a shockingly similar character profile to Fay, all the way from being a genius swordsman who wants to forget his past, bloody life, while also regretting immensely for being unable to save his mentor, teacher, and most of all, fatherly figure. I really wouldn't be surprised of this novel took massive inspiration from Gintoki.

However, all similarities end right about there. It's actually just how terrible the writing is. Generally speaking, a tr*sh prince setting is quite fitting for a novel about Fay wanting to run away from his past. He refuses to pick up his sword, else it might turn him into the monster he was before. So far so good. Honestly, if the direction of this novel was less fast paced, less serious, and focused more on character interactions while still dealing with relatively mature/heavy themes, it could have gone somewhere. Unfortunately, that requires good writing ability.

The main problem is that none of the characters have realistic dialogue at all. Fay especially. Ok, no one actually is going to have conversations where he constantly puts himself down by specifically addressing himself as a "tr*sh prince." Notice how many times Fay regards himself to others and how many times he says that he's a tr*sh prince. It doesn't even make sense. He also uses his reputation directly to justify his actions since "after all, I'm a tr*sh prince, aren't" That's just not how conversations flow. It's all telling and no showing. The author is very blunt and direct because he cannot write subtlety. Would it be so hard to imply things due to his mannerisms? Instead of directly saying that he's tr*sh prince, I think it'd be much more realistic if he instead just laughs it off and says "Isn't that just how I am, though?" Like Jesus, learn how to write characters with nuance.

Character development for Fay is similarly extremely blunt and straightforward. Want Fay to progress as a character? Instead of genuine character interactions, some building up of stakes, and complex interpersonal relations that force Fay to step up, instead he just gets a therapy session from a very powerful enemy masked as a battle. LMAO. That was funny. Some extremely power dude that Fay fight literally just breaks down Fay's mental barriers and helps him progress while also fighting to the death. It's pathetic. Ultimately, the battle doesn't matter and the author makes it clear by having it end off with "oh yeah, Fay just remembered he was strong and one shot him."

And yeah, fights are horrendous. Are they described at all? It's supposed to be a world of magic and swords, but it really is just a one-sided beating with Fay addressing his sword as if it's got a personality and killing everyone. How cringe is that? Chuunibyou syndrome all the way there. When Fay fights someone with a sword, instead of any real descriptors, it really just ends up with Fay "Somehow overpowering him/her." He gets crazy power upgrades because his OP shadow ability allows him to do just about anything. Apparently it can even morph him into his OP past self without needing to do any training at all. How convenient!

Writing a character that's facetious is actually to the benefit of this novel. After all, cracking jokes and hiding behind a mask of laughter kind of makes sense as a defense mechanism to Fay's inability to stand before serious situations, deal with his reputation as a tr*sh prince, while also simultaneously opening up a window for the reader to get to know Fay a bit better. Too bad it's just all droning monologues about self loathing, hate, and regret that gets regurgitated over and over again. <<less

I'll be brief.

This an example of how a story can die.

I think that in order to avoid the shonen action wildly spiralling out of control as it did here; the author should do more preparation than what was done here. Had the author gotten a beta to properly read the story before publishing, I imagine the wrapping up would've been much cleaner.

The author's style is good and if he doesn't make the same mistake in his next story, I would definitely be interested in reading it.

Honestly I liked the MC more at the start when he was depressed. He had a solid belief and stuck to his thoughts. After that he just turns into another irritating MC who keeps doing something even though he doesn't desire nor need to do it. Constantly complaining but doing it anyway.

MC is kind of pessimistic. Up until this point he's still looking at and living in the past, for the sake of the dead. MC sometimes wishes for death. Not saying this kind of gerne is bad, I just can't handle depression.

Also. I stopped because there were unnecessary wingmans trying to make MC marry someone. He did compromise somewhat (no marriage, just looking after) but it felt really forced and awkward.

it was really interesting at first but gets boring after the first 2 arcs, the MC is an annoying, cringe edgelord and the other characters were just forgettable, at first I thought this is a bit like "The beginning after the end" but that series is just more interesting
