ZhouXiang didn’t know if God was giving him a second chance to live because he wanted to give him extra loving care or was it because he hasn’t messed with him enough.

Otherwise, how could it be that both in and out of his entertainment career, whether it was in his past life or his current life, YanMingXiu would consider him as the substitute for the same person.

He also didn’t know, between him and Young Master Yan, who was actually more pitiful; the one who could only be treated as a substitute or the one could only find a substitute.

In his past life, ZhouXiang was the stuntman for the big star WangYudong.

But not just as his martial art stuntman…..

Even within his deeply ill-fated relationship with YanMingXiu, he was also undeniably a complete substitute.

Disheartened, ZhouXiang went with a group of documentary film crew into the deep valleys of the treacherous mountains. Unexpectedly, he lost his footing and fell off a cliff .

When he awakened again, it was already two years later. Nevertheless, he awakened in another person’s body.

What is even more tragic is that he still couldn’t escape the fate of being a substitute…

T/N: 替身: Tishen is a person who replaces another; a substitute, in filming the tishen is a stuntman/body-double.

This is a well written book, had me mad for the right reasons. Everyone speaks about their sympathy for the MC, I had no sympathy for him at all even after he fell to death, f*cked up I know, let me explain.

He willingly puts himself in a bad position and is surprised that it actually turned out to be a bad position. What's more irksome is that he is very self aware and still goes oh, I'll try harder he has to love in the end.

He, as the older more... more>> experienced person in their situationship to in this immature young man because of his aversion to loneliness know damn well that he doesn't care for him, I'm not excusing what the ML did to him that's a whole other topic I won't touch on.

It all just looks to me like he tried to manipulate a young man into staying with him because he's lonely and it backfired. <<less

If you've read any of the author's other novels, then you know what you're in for - except there's far, far more heartbreak in Professional Substitute compared to the rest of the 188verse, because here the ML's past actions triggered MC's flight, causing ML to be forever separated from MC by death:

Spoiler

WE know the MC Zhou Xiang isekai-ed into another body within the same world, but the ML Yan Mingxiu never had any confirmation as to his life-or-death until finally finding MC's original body years after the accident, surviving only on the faintest of all hopes in a sifu's prediction. I highly suspect ML would have eventually done everything possible to join MC in death had it not been for those words.

[collapse]

It become easier to emphathize with both MC and ML upon realizing their sheer desperation throughout their entanglement - MC wants to completely break all ties with ML and ensures he never finds out about his rebirth whilst ML wants to firstly tie MC thru all means necessary as the only person to ever remind him of his missing/dead lover (substitute for a substitute) , and later when he finds the truth.

Spoiler

There's also that very terribly bitterly ironic revelation that ML was attracted to the wrong person this whole time; his 'white moonlight' actually used an uncredited stuntman for the shot which made ML fall in love, and guess who that stuntman was?

[collapse]

Please also bring a lot of tissues, you're going to especially need them when MC's original body is finally unearthed... <<less

3.5 stars. Shui Qian Cheng is THE best at writing angst, melodrama and toxic but very compelling relationships. The pair is very similar to Impermanence Calamity. As with her other two books, she really excels at writing the feelings, motivations and emotional states of the two main characters so that even when the tragedy starts and they act in toxic and possessive ways with each other, it makes sense. I really enjoyed reading the drama that happens between these two characters. I did feel that the crazy plot twists kind... more>> of stretch the limit of believability for a contemporary novel. The angst worked better with Impermanence Calamity and Blood Crown. <<less

Not a bad story at all.

The main characters were well developed and there was a good selection of developed side characters - which I consider important in modern stories were the setting is pretty incidental - and the difficulties of daily life when you aren't wealthy didn't overwhelm the story (I read a different genre for that) Also some pretty hot scenes between the couple.

Obviously this a heavy on dog's blood story so there's lots of drama going on between the two main characters. The key to making this work... more>> is whether the author is convincing in how they portray the couple reestablishing trust in the relationship. Love is pretty easy. Trust is hard, and the ML has to work a long time for it here. I would have liked more consequences for the brother-in-law, but you can't get everything you want.
Spoiler

That and someone else to take a baton to that abusive bastard father of the ML and break a couple of his bones and see how he likes it. That ab*se was hand waved too much in my mind

I love this story. Before you read, this is the fourth warning (first warning: title, second: tags (tragedy), third: description). This novel is ANGST. Not a fluffy, lovey-dovey one (although the novel still has this part. 10%, maybe?). And it's HE. A tragedy with HE? Will this be toxic relationship? Nah, I don't think so. As an angst lover, this novel is a gem, a treasure for me.

--- OVERALL

The angst, the villains, the third parties, everything are arranged in proper dosage. Even a character or plot I usually roll my... more>> eyes to in other novels, I feel that his role is justified/meaningful here (neither excessive nor fake). Like I said, proper dosage (or maybe it's the author's skill, I'm not sure... xD).

Btw, there's no face-slapping (are you surprise? LOL). Hmmm, ML can be considered as being face-slapped, but barely. His case is more like... natural? 'Regrets come later' kind? Either way, it's not deliberate revenge like the usual face-slapping novels.

--- PLOT

The plot is compact and interesting that it's hard for me to put the book down. It's focus only on the main characters, so there're some plotholes regarding what happens to other side characters afterwards. But it doesn't have much impact to overall story. Some plots can be guessed as it's actually an emotional-based novel rather than plot-based. But don't worry! The plot is seamless and not choppy!

--- CHARACTERS

I adore MC. He is not a super handsome/devillish beauty nor is a gary stu. And not the kind of MC who 'can do anything with just a glance'. He is like any other people living his life and he has his own charms. He is a sensible, mature man and knows his place.

So how could he get into this pit called "YanMingXiu"?

It's because love is blind, ladies and gentlemen.

And it's not like he didn't realize something was weird. But he really loves ML and persisted in getting his love, although it ended in tragedy (this is before MC's rebirth).

As for ML. Hahaha, you might hate him so much at first. As for the rest, it depends on your view. I hated him, thinking "If it's me I would never forgive him, ever." or "Forgive you and in turns you would give me anything I want? Heh, do you think my feelings is so cheap/can be trade?!" This thinking went on more than half of the novel.

But in the end, I feel ML has paid his retribution. It's not instant forgiveness nor is a (ridiculous but extremely popular) 'I give my life trying to protect you' follow by forgiveness kind of plot. MC has his own considerations and I agree with his decision in forgiving ML.

Other characters, they did their roles. They are not over the top/ridiculous/excessive, but also not 'being there just for the sake of the plot'. [now I think about it, there's one person whose role can be considered for the sake of the plot... *sigh How unfortunate. He has potential to be a good villain]

Spoiler

Below is this suppose "being there just for the sake of the plot" character's name.

It's Tan Yi.

What do you guys think?

--- CONCLUSION

If you don't feel put off reading my review, I think you should give this book a chance.

And I want to express this (but kinda spoilerly! I've warned you!)

Spoiler

I've the urge to hug Brother Su and pat his back while saying, "You deserve this hug." when MC and ML finally reconciled even though he doesn't appear in this particular scene xD

Oh My GOd, I really like this novel. I read it ove and over again. The English translation is also very good and I love how they transalte the s*x scene too kudos to ROSYSPEL team. They are excellent!!!

I also love how the english translation wording to describe the both ZhouXiang and YanMingXiu feelings and relationship. The first part before the reborn which is the part the first year Zhou Xiang and Yan Ming Xiu stayed together was just so sad. I hate how YMX treated Zhou Xiang as f*ck... more>> buddy. Zhou Xiang tried very well to attract YMX and make him happy but in the end he was just a substitute. Im glad that Zhou Xiang reborn and make YMX almost crazy due to resembling factors as for me this is just a sweet revenge.

Chapter 87 – The Revelation is so good and I like how Zhoi Xiang says:“How could you say that you love me? YanMingXiu, how could you f*cking say that to me? When you were f*cking me, your heart was thinking of WangYuDong. With just a phone call from WangYuDong, you had me tied up and wouldn’t let me leave. For WangYuDong... You didn’t care how much you humiliated me... You... you’re telling me that you love me? YanMingXiu, this sentence, how could you say it?” " If this is a movie, the scene is so heartbreaking and the script is so good.

Just read the novel and hope that everyone will like it, just make sure to never throw away the chance with our love one before they gone forever. <<less

The writing and the whole storyline is really great. I'm someone that really immerse myself into the main character of every story so when I was reading this, it was kind of difficult to go on... Honestly, everything is great but there is a whole lot of miscommunication and misunderstandings. There are also oppressed feelings going on, especially for the male lead. I'm not too sure how to describe this novel but it has been a roller coaster ride for me. The story is a 9/10, the 1 point is... more>> because I can't handle the angst. But it has a HE so everything's great. Up till now I still feel horrible for the MC because he really went through a lot. I wouldn't be able to handle those shits if I were him but I guess that's what made me carry on reading.

I would definitely recommend everyone to try reading this because the storyline is great and the writing is awesome. It's definitely not a waste of time and if some of you guys are dissuaded by the reviews of others, I suggest you just ignore them and go ahead reading this because I never regretted coming across this novel. I guess it hit me really hard... <<less

Was a really nice detailed plot that resolved all the issues it presented. I don't feel like there's plothole or missing bit just wished there were more extras as a couple between the MC and ML.... more>>
Spoiler

The plot was amazing. I mean it went from the MC transmigrating to showing the past of what happened to him in his previous body/life.

The fact that the misunderstandings were so great it caused so much angst just made me wanna hug the author but also smack them. I mean I was asking for it but still. Out of the author's novels, this was one where there was no "rape" like feeling not cheating so it just made me ship the couple that much more. I've read Intoxication and Beloved Enemy both of the novels MLs were toxic so it was like you ship it but you know you shouldn't unconsciously. This one, the ML was an arse but he never claimed to "love" the MC, and didn't know that the guy he liked all along was actually the MC, so its like you can't be mad at him for long ????

[collapse]

BTW RosySpell was an A M A ZING translation group. I mean it didn't even feel like a translation it felt like the novel itself as an original. 11/10 on the translation. Thank you for translating this masterpiece and preserving it as a masterpiece ^^ <<less

Very exciting read. Pretty much all characters have a developed back-story. None of the characters are on a high horse of "moral integrity", not even the MC. The romance was like drinking lemonade where the honey got stuck at the bottom.

Lots of ab*se of the ML as well which is strangely satisfying to read, heheh.

Enjoy drama / angst / hidden-identities / separation / reunion / fake-amnesia / type stories?! ヽ (" ≫∇<) ノ

You've come to the right place! (。・//ε//・。)
.

I would recommend this if you're tired of super "pure" fictional characters. Both MC and ML have had previous relationships and they don't pretend to be anything other than hook-ups in the beginning.

Although I was super irritated at the ML in the first part of the book, I felt that by the end, he did get his retribution and it was pretty satisfactory. Also, the flashback/first-relationship was only about 1/4 of the story, so there's a lot of great post-rebirth parts about how the MC tried to make it work in his new body.

For me, none of the characters acted too annoying or immature. The ML is pretty spoiled/self-centered (but he's like super young), and the MC's personality is very generous/chill/easy-going, so I can see how they work together.

The hiding/angst is very strong (esp. After the MC was reborn and pretended he didn't know anyone) but I don't think any of the misunderstandings dragged for very long. Generally, the MC would confront the ML pretty quickly with his issues (within a couple days), so I support this couple's communication.

Pretty good translations, would reread again.

As the translator mentions, this book is similar to others by the same author, with similar theme of misunderstandings, side love interests used to invite jealousy, and awful characters that do 180 after realizing their emotions too late.

I enjoyed the story and the angst, but I can see how it might not be for everyone.

3.8/ 3.9 and I'm giving it this only because of the beginning, THE beginning of the novel was promising and I enjoyed it very much maybe because it's the first time I read this concept (rebirth) in this light so that's why I like it, the writing is good and keep me excited for what's going to happen but I didn't like the characters must honestly I liked their dynamic but not them individually so when things got solved and all I didn't want to continue it was sooooo... more>> boring the events very expected I swear I've read it 1000000 times at this point I even skimmed the extra but made sure to finsh the main stroy just because it was good at the beginning <<less

Great read if you’re in the mood for drama and angst! Reading through this story is like watching a K- or C-drama - you complain about the awful decisions the characters make and yet continue watching because you just can’t stop. You need to see how it all ends. This novel has plenty of melodrama, misunderstandings, and heartache for those looking for it.

The MC is a heartwarming and friendly stunt double who falls in lust with the ML who is an immature and selfish young master from an influential family.... more>> The two eventually develop deeper feelings for each. However, most of the issues occur because of a lack of communication and the fact that the ML doesn’t quite understand his own heart (he is still young - only 20 years old when they meet). And of course there are side characters that make the circumstances even worse for this couple.

This was my first foray into the 188 series by this author. Enjoyed it and it definitely delivered on the dogblood! <<less

I like this story.. It's all about 'misunderstanding' from ML side. He was infatuated with his bro in law since a long time back when he was still a teenager, just because of his sexy broad shoulder and back in the film he starred (never knowing it wasn't really his brother in law but our MC) It revealed later on, after our MC transmigrates in another body. In short, he was actually infatuated with MC long before he even realized he likes the wrong person. I love how the... more>> relationship growth, MC isn't that weak and a crybaby. Read this after I finished reading alpha predator since it was written by the same author. Personally, I think this novel is not so bad but in terms of the angst and overall plot I still love alpha predator more (gonna re-read alpha predator after this lol).

I love MC's personality so much but at first I can't help but to feel that MC was a bit shallow. MC only liked ML because of his looks, I mean there's nothing wrong with that, but even with all the red flags, he... more>> still fall for ML. I can't help to wonder will MC fall for ML despite all of the red flags that he himself notices if it wasn't for ML's looks but as I read the novel I get why MC fell for ML. I feel like MC was actually lonely and he wanted to love and be loved. He wanted to have a family. ML was just at the right place and the right time. Sadly, ML was a s*umbag but that's what makes this kind of 'chasing wife' novel fun. The angst. The regrets. The crazy emotion we get while reading it. The feeling of wanting to beat the ML to the pulp lol Definitely not everyone's cup of tea but it sure is mine.

Anyway, I enjoy reading this novel. The plot is fun, the smut is spicy but I kinda wish

I was putting this one far too long I guess since 2016ish, due to avoiding any showbiz related stories. And finally decided to read. And, I was pretty much hooked from the start.

Author has their unique style which attracts readers to keep up with the story with it's all toxicity and red flags.

Plus points
Spoiler
  • Story flow is interesting
  • Entertainment aspect of body stunts re new to me
  • Very throughoutly written dogblood angst story
  • Trans migration part was exploited smoothly avoiding any unnecessary supernatural filler
    [collapse]
Minus points:
Spoiler
  • Since it is one of the authors earliest novels, it provides quite poor character development. For instance: ML easily getting hooked with stranger from the first day and getting to live togethervery next week. Or MC being ready to be just a fck buddies but not being able to gulp down the fact of being substitute to someone. Right here the emotional switch is rough and strange that makes reader to doubt if it is the same character or not. Throughout the story characters make abrupt decisions that leaves readers in question, why did he do that. Such as the scene with MC finding out ML's promise to his Father and instead of questioning ML, he goes to meet father in person and states their relationship boldly. Right at this point I felt MC became suddenly fearless in second which was not quite his character. So yeah, very strange characters
    [collapse]
Overall 4/5

Just because this was author early work and still managed to keep the reader like me stay hooked even I am personally not fond of Entertainment arcs.

Ahhh just my type of story! I actually really love the relationship between the two leads! Both the MC and ML have strong personalities and both have an arc where they chase after each other. They both love each other and have really good times together before the misunderstandings start, and even after that I love how the relationship between them is explored througout the story. Really good read! Especially if you love stories that hurt with a happy ending

Mind the tags!

It's an initially unhealthy relationship that gets better. The ML is an immature brat that DOES get character development. He DOES mature and learns to express his feelings in more emotionally healthy ways. The couple's happy ending is deserved. However, the toxic parts, the angst, and the drama are real. This is not a fluffy story but it's nonetheless a very satisfying read.

More like a 3.5. As angst scummy gongs go this was a better one. I usually like fluffy stories but every now and then I'm in the mood for angsty ones. This would have probably been a solid 4 but I didn't like the added addition of the Yan family drama at the end, it was just too much.

I mean they already had so much drama that the author didn't need to add the dad imprisoning the ML, beating him severely and trying to force MC as a mistress while ML marries was too over the top soap opera-y for me.
