The former Chief Instructor of Jianghan Special Zone, Jiang Cheng, was reborn as a cannon fodder in a book.

He was the lost young master of a wealthy family, but he was suspected of harboring ulterior motives when he wanted to return to his family. He insisted that that the male lead was his fiancé, but he was ridiculed for having a wild imagination. In the end, he was forced to quit the entertainment circle and eventually froze to death.

When Jiang Cheng first arrived, he encountered the circle’s unspoken rules. Alarmed, he grabbed a random passer-by and declared, “This is my partner!”

A certain recently retired military instructor: “?”

Later, Jiang Cheng deeply understood a sentence– “A partner once, a partner for life.”

***

Jiang Cheng diligently went on variety shows to make money, but then he met his ex-fiancé.

Jiang Cheng: …An ex should act like an ex. Go away!

Another guest also appeared on the variety show–

Jiang Cheng thought that this man looked familiar. Unexpectedly, the latter actually strode over and said: “I’m here to look for my partner.”

Jiang Cheng: “…”

…Help, isn’t this the random passer-by he grabbed at that time?

It was merely a slip of the tongue, but the other party actually chased him here!

When the directing team began to introduce the background of the guests, Jiang Cheng couldn’t keep calm.

Isn’t this the man who was regarded as both a legend and a taboo, whose name couldn’t be mentioned, and the one set various legendary records!

Jiang Cheng’s eyes lit up– heroes will appreciate and respect other heroes!

Then the ex-fiancé moved between the two people and said, “Hi, little uncle.”

Jiang Cheng: “…?”

***

Jian Xingce felt that the wolf cub seemed to be targeting him. Not long after he retired, he was dragged and forced to act as the other party’s partner. Later, he was invited to be a guest on a variety show and unexpectedly met that person again.

When that man saw him, his lazy eyes instantly brightened.

Jian Xingce: He must really like me.

“This is the wooden house I built, I’ll give you a corner.”

Jian Xingce: He’s quite proactive.

“This bug is quite fat, the protein in it is equivalent to that of a piece of steak. I’ll give you a whole one.”

Jian Xingce: He definitely likes me very much.

“I made this fire, I will let you borrow it to roast things. How about you share some fruits with me in exchange?”

Jian Xingce: He treats me so well, I also like him a little bit.

But in fact–

1.

Jiang Cheng (mustering up courage): Jian Xingce, I want to be on good terms with you.

Jian Xingce (touches head): As long as you know staying with me is good, I won’t let anyone bully you.

Jiang Cheng: “…”

2.

Jiang Cheng (probbing): Jian Xingce, are you free? I want…

Jian Xingce (pulling his tie): Got it, call me husband

Jiang Cheng: ??? No!!!

3.

Jiang Cheng (standing 10 metres away): Jian Xingce, I already know you’re the man whose name cannot be brought up! I want you to fulfill a wish of mine!

Jian Xingce: Call me husband and I’ll give you all of my life

Jiang Cheng: I don’t want your life! I just want to fight with you! If a time limit must be added, then I hope– every day!

Jian Xingce: …?

Jiang Cheng thought he was alone and didn’t expect that later–

That handsome young chief designer who graduated from a competitive university and liked finding him to chat for inspiration was his own elder brother ;

That seemingly cold female president who gave him the title of global ambassador was his own elder sister ;

That middle-aged man in a suit and with a briefcase who wanted to arrange a blind date for him was the CEO of a monopoly, and that blind date was– a male god who was still alive!

Unexpectedly, that rich family was his own!

It wasn't bad, just a bit repetitive. Literally anywhere they go, some how a natural disaster would occur and they have to save people or do some danger stunts? That's just too convenient and too obvious, you get tired of the same plots over and over again.

I do like both main leads, they have their own personalities and very considerate of each other. Alot of the novel focus on their relationship, how they interact and their understanding of each other. They have alot of trust in each other and the... more>> relationship is natural because they are both the same type of person in a way.

I did enjoy the face slap of those cannon fodder villains in the early parts, just in the 2nd part they were too strong no one dare to try anymore.

Nationalist in this novel is strong, start with the Korean instructor been lambasted straight away.

MC isn't really suited to be in the Entertainment industry, he more like a survival specialist. I think that he was going to be a soldier again this world but they just make it the original timeline to be much more happier in this world, where everyone change their fates and gets to live a happier live.

Honestly I skim alot of the novel, because they are all repetitive, I get MC is a foodie and he eats anything he finds as long it's not poisonous but he does it everytime I get bored and not suprised anymore. The novelty fades away after first few arcs that I don't find anything suprising anymore.

I did enjoy the novel nevertheless, it's worth reading. <<less

Honestly, I could just read this for the survival portions? Like, you know people are gonna be fine since this is BL... But I felt like those portions were super interesting, suspenseful and sometimes more horrifying than the horror novels I've read? Very good.

The romance itself is fine and sweet, the background plot outside the survival segments are odd like if you mashed two different sandwiches together to make a new one. It's fine in theory when reading it but trying to describe this novel to my roommate had her... more>> going "what?? what???" This ultimately is a 4.5 star for me with the half docked star going to the early on antagonists, they just felt like filler/mandatory plot device patches slapped on between the juicy survival bits.

Tldr: If you like really explanation heavy, tech talk about a hobby from an author you'll like this. If you like actual people antagonist stories and not nature being the real issue, don't pick this. <<less

It's a sweet novel in which the MC, a survival expert, crosses into a book where he is the proverbial cannon fodder with a fiance who hates him.

By accident, he meets another survival expert (the s*um gong's uncle) with whom he will reach the other proverbial HE.

Obviously, we've all read several Shuangwen Mary Sou novels of this type, but if you like survival variety shows or enjoy reading about anything survival-related, it's worth reading. Normally I'd rate it with 4 stars, but I hate the immediate 1star ratings by bots... more>> that are against BL novels, so I'll raise it to 5 stars.

Btw, it's by the author of I'm A BUG In A Thriller Game, and she also has a second survival-type novel translated here.

It's a cute, what many call "brainless" novel that doesn't take itself too seriously to read in between angsty dog-blood ones. <<less

Rating: 4.2

My rating for this novel kept fluctuating, so I'm going to round down. I'll directly list the pros and cons.

Pros

... more>> <Character-wise>

Great (feeling) characters: ML is this special ops captain, and MC is his successor in the parallel world. They never officially meet in that timeline but intersect with each other (without their knowledge) quite often. When MC travels to the other parallel world, he ends up encountering ML and using him as a "partner" shield... And it's love from then on (basically).

ML is a 3-D character, cold and sharp but he is neither immune to his budding emotions for the MC (from the initial false delusion that MC likes him to the come-true delusion, we always get to see his red ears) or his traumatic experiences in serving for the army.

MC is also refreshing: he is seemingly gentle and go-with-the-flow, but is actually quite hardcore and tactical in the wilderness (but is always seeking to be lazy and comfortable). He likes to prove his points through actions, as we see a lot with antagonist conflicts. Other characters (MC's biological family, agent, solider companions) are not fully-fleshed out, but fleshed out enough dimensionally for you to enjoy and look forward to their interactions with the MC.

<Romance-wise>

ML and MC literally would die for each other. They always have each other's backs and are on equal ground. They're also quite OP in survival and skillsets, but in different ways that compliment (?) each other (ML will literally eat any raw edible thing in his path... including centipedes... while trying to survive while the MC will at least prefer animals or at the least, roasted centipedes lol).

The confession scene was so satisfying. Author treats them like grown adults and it shows. MC DOES NOT get blushy blushy stuttering and incompetent once he realizes he likes the ML and instead becomes proactive. Also, the romance is not dull even after they get together, likely because their character settings remain the same even within the relationship (it's like the flavor of a new but feeling old married couple).

<Action-component>

Can't validate the knowledge written, but it is quite interesting to read about. Author doesn't necessarily bring out big predators to show the danger of wilderness and emphasizes the threat of what you can't see or neglect initially using our OP MC, which is an interesting take.

But when she did bring out the bigger predators (a very large snake, crocodile, etc.), I did squint my eyes a bit (felt like I was reading a sci-fi novel at times)... One key point here is that while the MC and ML are pretty OP, they are never OP against the wilderness and encounter a lot of pretty scary moments. Love the realistic-ness there so much.

Cons

<Nationalism!>

It's not every chapter, but it is pretty apparent it is there. You have a villainous South Korean instructor, a slightly less competent (compared to the Chinese forces) Vietnamese special forces, and the big kicker is an international competition the MC participates in (they start off with Country A and B... eventually giving up and just directly referring to the USA and I assume England). The author mentions the USA likes to prey on the weak with military operations. While I can't validate the claim, is it really necessary to just implicate other countries?

Now, the author doesn't completely villainize every country, and I don't mind nationalism that says one is proud of one's own country, but I do mind when it implies a country is morally, culturally, and physically superior, which this novel certainly does.

<Transmigration Plot-line holes>

Fails to properly and in-depth address the transmigration plotline. Also, his family and ML believed him far too easily when MC talked about the transmigration.
Spoiler

Previous owner of the body is said to be a magpie occupying the dove's nest, but that is all? Also a little clue-in into the previous owner's life, his resolution, would be nice? It is clear they ended up switching bodies when they were young in this sort of parallel world, but that fact that's the only solid piece of information I have is not lovely.

[collapse]

<MC's physical fitness... ?>

MC's physical fitness fails to check out with his skillset from the previous life. A lot of the physical actions MC performs in the wilderness in the beginning doesn't check out with the fitness of the original body the MC occupies, even more so with a lack of mention to the training he implemented. Author seems to acknowledge this sometimes, but not at the points where it really matters. In the later half of the novel, it gets better, but still.

Conclusion

Despite my complaints, I did, for the most part, enjoy the novel. The Completed mark is a testament to that (as I abhor reading novels with 130+ chapters). If you like the cold ML + powerful MC + found family + mysterious background + survival competition tropes, you'd definitely enjoy this like me. As another reviewer said, if you take everything with a grain of salt, then perhaps you'd enjoy it even more. Would recommend on those conditions. <<less

I read this quite a while ago... don't remember when exactly. Not long after it was published (read it all in MTL, before it was here on NU). This was a great book, and the main drawbacks that made me remove a star were:

    • s*upid villains
    • nationalism, such as when the MC humiliated the Korean guy on the survival show
I think there is a mistake in the tags. It shouldn't be Racism tag but Nationalism instead.
