Ji Zhen Tang first saw Zhong Yu Bai at her boyfriend’s birthday banquet.

Amidst the clinking of glasses, the man sat calmly in the midst of swirling smoke, unruffled, quietly listening to the conversations around the table.

Her boyfriend leaned in to whisper to her, giving her a heads-up: “That’s my third uncle, don’t provoke him, I can’t handle it.”

On the same day of the birthday banquet, her boyfriend got drunk and embarrassed her in front of everyone.

Leaving the Zhong family mansion, she walked in the rain. Before long, an umbrella was held over her head, and Ji Zhen Tang looked back.

The person following her turned out to be the same uncle from earlier. The man smiled gently, with a comforting tone, “Let me walk with you a bit.”

Meeting her ex-boyfriend again at a friend’s gathering, they were now former lovers.

Ji Zhen Tang overheard her ex-boyfriend’s tone full of envy as he talked about his uncle, mentioning how Zhong Yu Bai bought a tea plantation in the prime land of the mountains and rivers for his little girlfriend.

People started gossiping, “Which woman is so lucky?”

Before anyone could finish their words, someone stepped in from outside. The man exuded an imposing aura, silencing the whole room.

Without paying attention to anyone else, Zhong Yu Bai walked straight to Ji Zhen Tang and gently embraced her.

“The feng shui of the mountains and rivers is suitable for begonias. Since she likes it, everything is negotiable.”

Ji Zhen Tang had heard about Zhong Yu Bai from others, portraying him as a high-status, gentle and wealthy man. Mr. Zhong was perfect in every aspect, except for being too ruthless and not understanding the meaning of compassion.

But she had clearly seen it. When she was sick, he patiently brewed medicine for her by the stove, gently massaging her numb and painful hand until late into the night.

He spoke words of comfort in the softest and gentlest manner, afraid of troubling her.

“Does it still hurt?”

Zhong Yu Bai listened with a smile, his eyes full of affection as he gazed at his sparrow—

“She is a bird, and I am not her cage.”

“I am her sanctuary.”

This is such a simple but touching story. Not too much drama, no heartbreak or separation. It's a soothing piano piece, a poetic journey though a quiet autumn night.

This story teaches you a whole new definition of love - slowly maturing from no strings attached to grow old together. I didn't want the journey to end. The writing style is philosophical and intriguing, so is the translation.

Love the FL for her unyielding spirit and the ML for his undying love. This is one of the epic love... more>> stories in NU.

Waiting for more from the author. <<less

It's not the greatest story and doesn't have a unique plot but it's such a good novel if you try it. Props to the translators because I enjoy how they translate it, especially the Male lead's way of communicating.

I have no expectations for this yet I cried so much that I want to give a lower rate. I quite resonate with our protagonist's views on love, maybe that's why I like this novel. There's no need to think about this story too much as long as you enjoy it.

Who doesn’t love a good slow burn? This novel seems cliche if one judges it by its description, but how wrong would you be if you did. The storytelling keeps you wanting more, the characters aren’t caricatures, and the relationships along with the highs and lows that come with it is realistically considered. The translation is top-notch, so read it and revel in the beautiful ambiguity of the leads’ courtship and inner turmoils.

While this story isn't revolutionary, it is good. The pacing is decent and realistic. The female lead is a 20 year old college sophomore who has become pessimistic due to her experiences. After her short childhood she experienced zero familial love nor compassion. As a result she has frighteningly realistic expectations from those around her. She has also developed anxiety and depression.

ML comes in to change that perspective and help her get what she deserves. He is almost a decade older, but it is a relationship that still works.

The translator is awesome too and I started reading their other translations because they are so good! <<less

Simple plot but beautifully written making it an enjoyable read. It’s slow-paced but not boring, its calm but not static and its heartful but not heavy. The plot is cliche but done right and it creates this nostalgic feelings towards it. I love both the MC and the ML’s attitude towards themselves, their partner, their friends amd their family. If you want to read something in the passing that will not take much effort to understand or enjoy but still slightly memorable, this is the one for you!

Zhong Yu Bai reminded me of Han Ting in the sense that both are mature and intelligent, except that ZYB is much gentler and indulging towards his woman. Besides that, this novel was sloooooow; it had little to no conflict so reading this was a no brainer.

Beautiful story. Not much drama just a path to love and romance. There’s story was beautifully written and written in a very poetic way. It’s a story tailor made for romance movie. The characters imbued with sense of reality but with kismet fate. The ML is everyone dream man. Yes he is a perfect man every woman wish for. And MC imperfectly perfect woman, with all her struggles and strengths that resonated with alot women situations. So this story is a fairy tale in its own way. Good read. Nothing... more>> heavy, good ‘realistic’ romance and love, hardship and growth. Good dose of romantic read. Thank you <<less
