Tang Xiao was a grinding gamer emperor who majored in the heavenly pit of biology at university. He motivated himself to find another way to become a professional gamer.

As a genius who played games plus as a grinding emperor, there was no level he couldn’t play. One day, his roommate recommended him a holographic game known as the most difficult in history. Countless professional players had failed and he could become famous in one fell swoop if he could play it.

Tang Xiao went on with confidence and then hit numerous BE.

The beginning was always the laboratory, and he ended up being devoured by a monster he raised.

Tang Xiao:? It’s kind of interesting.

After countless weeks of stumbling with the monster, Tang Xiao went from a laboratory minion to an assistant researcher. From assistant researcher to formal researcher. He even went ashore as a biology graduate student in reality.

Tang Xiao: … Wait a minute, what am I playing this game for? (Uptight) (Out of my Mind)

Forget it, I’m done grinding!

In the end, he looked at the little monster he had raised, covered in blood red, like a mushroom and an animal, with the sanity point dropped all over the place.

He didn’t know when the monster that learned to disguise itself as a human appearance stuck up like a dog, not at all cold-blooded and cruel as before, stretching out its mycelium-like tent**les to wrap around Tang Xiao’s ankle and said in a hoarse voice, “As promised, a tube of blood for a kiss.”

Breed: King of Mushroom (Higher Dimensional Organism)

Danger Level: ???

Tang Xiao smiled disdainfully. He resolutely died in a certain main quest and uninstalled the game!

Garbage game, ruin my youth! This grandpa is not playing anymore, I’ll be on my way to a PhD if I play again!

……………………

The eldest brother of the Tang family worked at a high level, and one day, he learned a secret.

A holographic game called had swept the world, but the game was not just a game. The game world was a real parallel world, and for various reasons, the two worlds were about to merge. There was going to be a big mess.

One day, the special department suddenly and urgently issued an internal warrant to find a mysterious Dr. Tang.

The monster he cultivated went berserk. The spores and mycelium were all over the world and as the two worlds merged, he would ascend to the throne. However, it was not a good thing. Because of the disappearance of someone, the monster was in a berserk phase where it could not communicate.

The eldest brother of the Tang family observed the characteristics of Dr. Tang on the wanted notice. He then glanced at his younger brother, who was absentmindedly playing games with his legs crossed.

Is it to punish his relative for justice? Or is it to punish his relative for justice?

I’m not eloquent enough to describe this masterpiece with the respect it deserves but I’ll try my best to. The description of the story I found did not do it justice. An absolute Gem.

MC is intelligent. I don’t think I’ve actually ran into many stories with such well written characters, especially genuinely intelligent ones. Both creative, emotionally average, and smart. (Troupes tend to make ‘smart’ characters super dense, but I found him pretty realistic here. Though that just might say more about me cause I relate heavy with this mc)... more>>

At no point did I think that any of the characters/character arcs were unrealistic and/or frustrating. Everyone was so well written, you can genuinely feel the history behind some of them. Even characters how only appear once! Each character feels real, with their our struggles, rivals, friends, history etc.

The ML character arc and evolution throughout the story felt both realistic in the inhumanity of the progress and beautiful in the development of it. You get drawn into MCs passion, and can’t help but feel like you’re physically there as well watching the progress with the research.

I fear I’ll start accidently throwing in spoilers if I continue raving about this story. It’s more than worth the read, I’ll be waiting impatient for updates. All of it is worth it; the characters, the world building, the progress, the relationships, etc. Beautifully written.

Maybe it’s my inner nerd showing, I wanted to be a scientist growing up. This story is making me lament that old dream of mine. <<less

I am not good at writing reviews but I'll try my best.

This is kind of a sci-fi novel (for me at least) where the MC unknowingly saves mankind and found love at the same time. It actually has really complex themes on both scientific aspects and human aspects that made my brain explode with the amount of information that it had to digest, where one part I have to understand how things came about, why his research is successful and what needs to be done and at the same time... more>> you can see the MC deal with the fatigue and depression that comes with "loading the game" over and over again.

Spoiler

One that struck me the most is how one should deal with life when you can live for an eternity, as MC and ML I guess kind of shared genes with each other or the MC containing a "key gene" for the ML to evolve somehow also lengthened his lifespan for an indefinite amount of time.

The emotions hit me really hard when reading the extras here MC & ML went back to earth and most of his family and friends are gone that scene when he was browsing their family album tore my chest and the part where he was watching the documentary about his life and at the very end after the credits, it showed a photo of their team of scientists in the otherworld + the video made by his mentor and friend, is just T_T

[collapse]

Overall, this is a great read, though some parts feel a bit dragging especially those research parts of the novel but hey that what research is about and just like the MC said you need to have patience to be a scientist. Would I read this again? Probably not. Its too heavy for me, take that from someone who enjoy good fluffy stories but one thing is for sure, this will be one of those novels that I will be holding dear in my heart. (It is not a depressing/psychological story okay? Its just for personal and mental reasons)

Ps: the ML is so cute like a big dog that turns into a wild wolf the minute its owner is not looking lmao

Pps: why do bl novels featuring mushrooms always make me bawl my eyes out? 😭 *I'm looking at you Little Mushroom* <<less

First off, this is a really good read. The novel itself is written very well in my opinion, I'm very impatient so I read almost all of the chapters with MTL. Although to say, it's not very understandable for some sentences but I manage through to the end because it's just so intriguing. Also this novel is a bit heavy (?) . There's quite a lot of scientific explanation (albeit fiction, you can kinda skip it if you want).

The MC is actually not 'smart' from the start, well not at... more>> a genius level that is. But he's very strong willed and also he's not the type to give up easily. And yes he has emotions, he gets sad at people, he sometimes felt tired of doing pointless thing (the game) yet he persist anyway because everything in that world is very dear to him, to the point where he tried again and again until he got depressed, especially when he thought him and ML would never meet again. The ML is interesting too, he's funny and cute yet also dangerous and even ruthless at times, as the chapters go we would understand more of the ML's character. Their relationship at the start is not very smooth, in fact it's bad and could even go differently (in a bad way) if only the MC is not stubborn enough to follow his game mission. Their story is beautiful in my opinion and it makes me quite sad once I'm done with the novel.

The plot of the story itself is good and keeps you going because there's just a lot to process, I especially like when the MC is really into his role as a scientist. World building is good, sci-fi is fine and although I wish we could dwelve more on the monster part, I guess it's given because the MC is quite literally bound most of the time inside his lab (And yes the MC will grow very OP alongside ML) . There's also angst, and I cried a few times while reading it, especially the extra chapters (I really love it and end up mourning on what could've been). All in all it's a very good read and I love it so much, wishing for more novels like this in the future!

P.S : I'm not very good at english, sorry for bad grammar :^ <<less

I really like when things makes sense. Not that I understand everything but the author makes the story sound convincing.

This story is sci-fi and most of the story is about experiments, scientific research and discussions. The MC is the researcher and the ML is the experimental subject. When the MC becomes more involved in the battlefield, the story will start heating up and you will feel the tension and pain.

I label our dearest ML as a 'tamed yandere'. Throughout the story, he's been a good boy and even takes the... more>> initiative to help the MC in various ways. He's so obedient that this opened a world to me that I never knew. I didn't know I liked this kind of ML because I usually read about yandere MLs on the dominant side. He's so tame and gentle -- I never expected a green flag in this kind of story.

The MC and ML are very OP but their struggles made me feel this heart-rending feeling everytime something happens. Still, it will make sense eventually why the MC is so OP.

Spoiler

The game system's load and save file is actually originally the MC's time ability. The future MC lived a long, long life and made the system so that the MC will have a direction to saving the world, meaning sacrificing himself for humanity.

The ML's love for the MC really made me cry so many times but the extras made me feel pain. Part of the extras is the future MC's experience with nothing but himself to rely on. He had no family in the game world, no connections, no system to guide him, no nothing. He started from the lowest starting point with only desperation to survive until he became mad. His time rewind ability only activates in a near-death situation. To save the world, he experienced hundreds of deaths. At the time, 428 was not hope but a monster he didn't know.

And then, many things happened. I don't want to elaborate but it really hurts. Just that the future MC especially reminds me of SSS-Class su*cide Hunter.

[collapse]

Spoiler

I believe that the reason why the MC is so OP is because of the system created by the future MC. There were levels in knowledge and I think this knowledge is from the future MC.

Also, the reason for all this fiasco is actually the mother of the king of fungus. This mother can be considered the Mother Earth since she started life on Earth like every being started from fungi. The problem is because she overslept, her offspring accidentally got swept away in a wormhole and into the parallel world. So she transferred a special gene to beings in the world that will serve as the key to make her offspring come back.

The reason the king of fungus is so desperate to eat MC is because the MC's body contains this special key to evolution.

this review contains a BUNCH of spoilers so be careful!

AMAZING PHENOMENAL. I loved this so much. I read about 3/4th of this through an actual translation, and then the rest I manually translated, and I bought some of the extras off of jjwxc! You know, I really like a novel when I buy the chapters to help support the author!! I don't think mtl, the beginning part of this novel, would work because there are a CRAP ton of scientific language and explanations, and I’m not sure how google translate... more>> would do with that.

i loved the main character a lot. I thought he was a really interesting and fleshed-out character. It was so satisfying to see him go from a sophomore who slept in all his classes and failed to a nobel prize winner and world-renowned scientist??? He was really smart and never gave up. He definitely had the “cold mc” style, but he still had emotions and ambitions, it was a nice surprise. The ml, 428, was very well written out and interesting, he was funny and affectionate but also ruthless and scary at times. I liked how he was a monster and he was morally grey rather than perfect and exactly like a human. Sometimes he did things you wouldn’t agree with and I liked that about him considering he wasn’t human. The MC and ml’s relationship was one of my favorite aspects of this. The ML literally kills the MC like 35 times in the beginning so you know it’s real enemies to lovers hehe. I liked how they slowly began to trust each other. They were just sooo adorable and loved each other so much, both green flags. They loved eo so much that the MC would die thousands of times for the ML to live 😭💔. No joke, I cried a few times reading this, especially in the extras but ill get into that later. They only had each other to rely on and it was really important to progressing their relationship. Now onto the side characters. They were genuienly fun to read about and I liked how their backstories and personalities went into depth. It was mostly xiao bai’s backstory that went into depth but regardless, I really liked his character and I wish I could’ve read more about him. Rocky, dr feng, mc’s brother, and the other characters were likeable and I loveeee webnovels with multiple characters and a found family trope. They all love each other so much and treat each other as a family. 😢. the plot of this was really good. I didn’t have too much trouble understanding the science terms cause im a bio major and I also do research! The research aspect of this was probably one of my favorites. It went into depth and you can tell the author did their research. I was a bit surprised when it focused on gene-editing technology but there was no mention of crispr when it’s hugee in china. Regardless, it was really relevant and I loved how the author included real aspects of science and research with fictional beasts and the world setting. It made me love research even more! The romance imo isn’t a big focus in this novel. It starts off strong and slows down in the middle and then the romance is focused on in the end. It’s mostly about the mc’s rise to becoming a scientist and his motivation to help 428 survive. It does at times drag on, especially with all the time travel and research. At the same time, it is also 800k words so its not surprising. So I think if you’re wanting a romance-driven plot you may not like this as much. I thought the world-building was top tier. The apocalypse, the beasts, the fungi, the superpowers, it was all so interesting and it had a fairly good conclusion in the end. Like it was explained really well and leaves you satisfied. Another aspect I liked was the reload and save file of the mc’s ability. It was soo cool and super interesting, he really sacraficed himself so many times for humanity and it makes you love the MC. The first few extras were super cute. They get married and you see all the characters at their weddings and all of the mc’s supporters on social media supporting them! So adorable. The other extras, which I didn’t read but I saw in a review that they love on for really long and they come back to earth and most of their family is gone : (it makes me so sad and they truly do rely and love each other. I loved this so much, the research aspect, the characters, the realtionships, everything about it and i’ll definitely think about this for a long time. <<less

This is a really good sci fi-ish story about being a biology grad student and also trying to save the world and also bedding an eldritch mushroom being along the way. It's a very good read, and is actually a better read if you have biology or STEM knowledge.

One of this story's strongest points is the science stuff being almost 100% accurate to real life. That might seem like a bother to others, but I respect the decision to have the investigation of the mushroom spore (who ends up being... more>> ML) start at modern science levels, and then try to "solve the unknowns" like real scientific explorations. It also helps that the characters are well written and the game vs. Real life vs. "Wait they might be the same" is handled well.

I also respect the story for being properly monsterf*cker. Like I'm not talking "oh it's a humanoid with a huge penis" I'm talking MC starts making out with blood red mycelium and bone in the shambling approximation of a man, with no skin and too many eyes, and MC is into it. They were made for each other (they're both completely insane). Yes the ML gets a human form eventually. Yes he still pulls out extra eyes or body horror to be cute because he knows MC's preferences. The progression of ML from "hunger" to "love" is also handled quite well, mostly because MC has a save system so he dies a lot in the beginning until he manages to convince ML that keeping him alive lets him give food indefinitely rather than just consuming his entire body.

Romance aside, the majority of the story is more of a drama / political intrigue type deal but with scientists rather than royalty or whatever. It's good, the characters are again very well written, and there's clear progression in the abilities of all the characters over time. But it's up to you what type of story tension you like, because in this story it changes quite a bit. MC is more interested in science than love, and once he starts realizing both worlds are "real, " his priorities start shifting pretty quickly (ch's in the 40's). If you're not into scientific research explanations, you might want to skip this one, or just try it out and see. <<less

The story sounds interesting, but the "translation" (I'm guessing MTL) on CG is so low-quality I can't be bothered to read on. I'm not wasting my time on sentences like "Is it already so exciting in the beginning?" or "Is the quality of the newcomer now like this?" or "It was like Newtonian fluids, which could appear on either side of the irregular sphere." Whatever a "grammatical creature" is, I wish whoever is responsible for this was one, because it's an eyesore.

The tension in the beginning was good. Though the ML underwent a major change, and I'm not really fond of it. My first impression of "it" or him, was that he was cold and ruthless. You can read the spoilers down below, they aren't particularly big.

ML killed MC 34 times (?) , I really liked that because it didn't feel like their relationship just magically worked in one go. It took trial and error.

[collapse]

I liked the way the story developed and how minor characters slowly started becoming important. Though I do have a few complaints..

The Male Lead went from ; lunatic, killer, apathetic to being a caregiver. That felt really forced to me. ML even wanted to harm MC in the beginning. I would've liked it more if the ML would continously try to kill the MC but that wouldn't be logical at all (considering the fact ML gains power ups and can easily kill MC)

I usually drop these stories once the tension wears off. So I'm going to drop it here. That's about it, a solid 4/5 <<less

This novel is GOLD

simply incredible, my expectations were low seeing so few reviews and having never heard of this novel (I found it by pure chance) and I ended up stumbling upon a whole mine of gems!!!!

the plot, the characters, the slow burn, the enemies to lovers (really ENEMIES to lovers) the development and ending ???? I am speechless.

the whole novel has a very strong scientific context with horror and mystery, time loops and alternate worlds, I actually felt s*upid reading so many scientific concepts but it gave a very... more>> realistic touch to the whole story, every arc is just brilliant

Spoiler

for a while I even blamed the MC a lot for acting the way he did when he discovered that this world could be real and not just a game, but being honest, would you blame him? ? Many in his shoes would think of clinging to the golden thighs but his response was to ease the pain that sooner or later would cause their separation : (

[collapse]

about the ML hufff

Spoiler

he is the red flag and at the same time the greenest I have ever seen in my life, he is a monster through and through, his behavior and vision of things are that way and even when he feels emotions he doesn't know how to distinguish them or how to react to them, as the story continue he goes from being a monster that kills and devours even flesh and bones dozens of times of the MC to a monster that even in the worst possible mental state he is scared of any minuscule harm he can do to the love of his life

The author's style is a bit mediocre, and at first it was difficult for me to fully get into the story, despite how much I loved the idea itself. There are also many biological scientific terms, and they are not always appropriate, but in general it helps to maintain the atmosphere.

However, before I noticed it, I began to get into the story and get attached to the characters, although only to a few, since some of them are quite flat in my opinion. But I like Xiao Bai and Brother... more>> MC, and I would even be happy to read a story only about them. Even
Spoiler

Leon, a character whom I initially thought was a typical flat villain who disliked MC, has some character development and does not behave like a s*upid stock character who does not see beyond his hate of the main character.

[collapse]

At the moment, the plot is starting to warm up and I'm looking forward to what's next and even thinking about reading MTL. ML is cute, but somewhat creepy because of his inhuman nature – very much in the theme.

4 stars. Too good for 3, and falls short of 5, even 4.5. <<less

Tang Xiao ends up doing scientific research in a game meant to win affection from a monster who craves his flesh and blood... but this non-human develops the most child-like, pure love for him - he restrains the clamoring of his biological instinct to protect and treasure him. And in turn, Tang Xiao, too, falls into this sweetness all the while he battles for humanity's survival in the other world as a researcher.

My boy Tang Xiao is a monster-f*cker in denial. But later accepts himself for whom he is.

Idk anything about biology but yes I agree 👍🏻 lmao

I cried a lot. Both bc of the side characters and cos of the main leads. Man, their love was short but so beautiful.

Spoiler

What happened to the other Tang Chen anyway? Did I miss it?
