Meng Zhen transmigrated and became the long-lost daughter of the Xu Group, as well as the stepping stone for the adopted daughter, Xu Xueruo.

The adopted daughter had a gentle and kind personality and was in the top ten of her grade, while on the other hand, the other Meng Zhen had just come of age and was a starlet who had never attended high school.

When Meng Zhen came to that world, the other Meng Zhen’s public persona had just collapsed. Under the adopted daughter’s schemes, she was kicked out of the house by her parents while being forced by her manager to pay an exorbitant fee for breach of contract or to ‘dedicate herself to art’. She had become a scheming woman despised by everyone.

According to the predetermined fate, the other Meng Zhen, in utter despair, swallowed sleeping pills to end her life. After learning of her sister’s death, the adopted daughter ‘tearfully’ helped handle the aftermath and even used the music composed by the other Meng Zhen to win the favor of a prominent figure.

Now, Meng Zhen had become the other Meng Zhen. She looked at the negative news about her online and then at the ‘pitifully innocent’ adopted daughter.

She proceeded to burn the music scores to ashes without any hesitation.

I can only say that it's "ok". It's only 54 chapters and it's a very light read with no ups or downs, not particularly good but not particularly offensive either. It's "fine".

For a moment it looked like the novel had some unique things going for it -- the MC who transmigrated didn't enter a novel or alternate world, but instead travelled through time. She came from the previous century and was a silent film era and Beijing opera actress originally, and her deceased spirit watched the original soul's life until... more>> her early death. This is a really interesting take that had a lot of room to do some original things, but it ultimately serves zero real purpose and there is functionally no difference from if she had just been a modern day actress. She doesn't struggle to adjust to a technological, internet-driven age, she instantly knows how to use a phone, she doesn't have any inconvenience at all, she's functionally just a modern day person.

There was also a fake out moment where the ML looked to be a different structure than the rest for a hot minute. MC gets her big break when a popular musician asks for her to perform for his MV micro-movie, and he's a scholarly, affable megane. I really sat up and got excited for a second. He's not the ML, haaaa. The ML is an absolute template character: cold, domineering film emperor who actually comes from The Most Powerful Family and is just doing acting as a lark. That's fine, clichés happen because people like certain tropes and so they get reused a lot. It was just annoying to me because at one point the fake-out ML is asked if he's interested in the MC and he denies it because he's ten years older than her so how could he possibly be interested in someone so young.

The MC ('s body) is 18. The movie emperor ML is 29. Like, okay. doubt. png

Speaking of the ML, the romance is very flat.
Spoiler

As I said, he's just a template, run-of-the-mill cold movie emperor, and he just becomes attracted to the MC immediately for no discernible reason and immediately uses his influence to help her out all the time. They don't even really have any moments where they seem to really bond on any level, the author just goes to great lengths to describe how they're both very attractive and they look good together and... that's it. That's the romance.

[collapse]

Some light obnoxious Chinese nationalism that, naturally, requires shitting on other countries in order to display Chinese superiority. Can't y'all just appreciate your culture without having to put down others to do it? For some it's a non-issue, that's fine. I like to be told these things, so I thought I'd mention it. It was just somewhat funny to me because it required talking about Korean traditional instruments and I thought it was at least generous the author was willing to acknowledge Korea has their own traditional culture at all, because usually they like to just claim that China invented everything. <3

Finally, re: the family.
Spoiler

Two-dimensional and again, a template, by-the-books s*um family, even down to the spoiled, s*upid younger brother who mindlessly bullies the real daughter because the fake lotus daughter led him on. They're not deep, interesting, or original. To be frank, I couldn't even work up the enthusiasm to hate them as villains because they were so cardboard cut out.

[collapse]

The pros:

One thing about these transmigration stories that I dislike and find increasingly uncomfortable is the sense of theft from the MC over the original. The MC transmigrates into a woman who came from a rich family or married a rich husband or whatever, and the people around her that hated the original turn around and just end up loving the MC. Or worse, when the family did love the original and now are just putting that love onto the person possessing their corpse unknowingly? Even if you decorate it in platitudes that they're fulfilling the originals wishes or whatever, there's something so creepy about it. It just feels like the whole potential of life of the original was stolen by the MC.

This story completely avoids that. The MC doesn't "take" anything from the original.
Spoiler

The only only connective tissue from the original is a friend from the orphanage who is barely in it and only serves a single plot purpose. The original had no intersection with the ML, the MC completely cuts off her relationship with her s*um family by the end, and she even switches to a different company, so in the end, the results of her career are entirely her own and separate from the original.

[collapse]

And she burns the music scores, as stated in the synopsis, by her own words that the originals heartfelt feelings aren't something to be exploited by the white lotus sister or the MC. I can see another novel going down the path of the MC publishing the scores or "fixing them up" with her OP music knowledge and performing them on a streaming service or something, and smugly patting herself on the back for "fulfilling the wishes" of the original soul. I'm really so glad that this novel chooses a different path. <<less

This one begrudgingly gets 4 stars, and I have say 3 stars or less wouldn't be inappropriate. The story starts off poorly. The MC transmigrates in at what was the end of the original MC's story and it takes about 20 of the 56 chapters for what actually is happening to become clear. What's worse is in the opening chapters the reader is being told what happened instead of reading what happened. It doesn't generate empathy or ties to the MC.

On the plus or minus side the novel has a... more>> more realistic take on the conflict between the real and the fake daughter, it also has an interesting take on the family life. While there is face slapping in the novel it falls into two distinct categories. One the MC is incredibly lucky and the antagonists wind up with really bad days/mistakes. The other is the MC just gradually grinds antagonists down. I much prefer the clever mission impossible style face slappings so this was a bit of a let down.

As the story goes on the family is slowly developed into proper tr*sh and a very hateable bunch. The MC also develops a dogged persistence in pursuing her life goals.

Bottom line there's just too many flaws not the least of which is the writing style which was frankly dull. <<less

So the overall book is cute, has some decent face-slapping revenge, but there isn’t a lot between the ML and the MC. It was an easy and quick read, but was pretty underdeveloped. Still, if you want a quick book with an OP MC, this is good.

Everytime the biological family and adopted sister showed up, I was so disgusted. I hated that MC acted so subservient to achieve "revenge" that seemed like a farfetched dream. I sincerely wish MC set boundaries earlier.

  • The minute they ordered MC to quit her job, the comeback would be, "so you can chase me out the house again when you feel like it?"
  • They had never raised MC, what gave them the audacity to make demands of her?
  • The adopted daughter was sickly but why did they act like the TRAFFICKED MC owed the sickly daughter?
  • I wish MC exposed sickly daughter earlier so she wasn't morally obligated to cater to this poisonous black lotus.
  • The parents still carry the greatest blame. They neither gave security to adopted daughter with their conditional love, nor fostered an environment to nurture both daughters equally.
MC's career

  • Her acting roles were so repetitive: flawless beauties that could dance.
Face slapping

  • It's never satisfying when the antagonists are clearly low IQ cannon fodder

It was an okay read... Not memorable. It's a very light novel you read without using having to use your braincells...

I just don't like how in every paragraph, the author always have to describe how beautiful and perfect the MC is, it's a bit tiring reading it.

The translation is very good. The novel is easy to follow and I enjoy it. However, the romance is a bit forced. The author didn't give the ML and FL enough time to fall in love properly. But this is still a good light read to pass time. Also, great work to the translator!

It was okay. Not bad. Not great. Very standard switched at birth and entertainment/acting plot line.

I’m not certain if it’s due to the shortness of the story but the character development was not fleshed out well. Everyone was a bit too two dimensional. Especially the MC’s family. The main antagonist was particularly flat and hateful.

But regardless it was mostly enjoyable. Until the very end. I liked the ending but it was definitely rushed. As though the author ran out of ideas or simply wanted to end things quickly. Timeline was... more>> rushed and romance barely started before it was concluded. I’m embarrassed to even have the romance in the genre tag 🫠. The extras were cute tho. <<less

For such a short read, it feels a bit slice of life-ish. It's a generic entertainment novel 🤷🏻‍♀️ I think my main concern is the huge age gap between FL and ML. I don't really mind weird ages in historical and fantasy stories - but this is modern day. I find it iffy but that's a personal preference.

Halfway through the novel, it seems like the author just wanted to finish and ran to the finish line, the rest of the story felt like it was written without care in one... more>> sitting 😅 <<less

Like what other reviews stated, it was okay, not heavy and suitable if you want read some short story to pass time. The one where you read it today and forget it tomorrow. The story is bland and the characters are flat. Near the end you can see that the author rush the story and its make the story timeline kinda jumbled.

Another thing to take note is, the romance between MC and ML was weird. Like its fast and fall into the category doesnt make sense. If the author didnt... more>> rush this its might better.

The villains is beyond s*upid lol The purpose of them is to make the faceslap scenes and even that, its kinda not satisfying.

The translation is nice tho, kudos to the translator team. <<less

It's another story that I would consider to be just "whelming". Neither good nor bad, it's just in between.

The MC is Meng Zhen, who takes over the body of a similarly named girl. Beyond her wish to be an actress and her constant inwardly sneering, there really isn't much to her personality. She doesn't go out of her way to do anything against anyone until it's basically at the point of the other characters having no choice but to realize. Even then, everyone's IQ drops.

The ML is a Film King... more>> who left very little impact on me. I think his name was Gu Ting but he's honestly just forgettable. Think typical CEO type with no buildup.

Things happen quickly in the narrative even though it's over the course of a year (man she films things quickly). Almost all the face slapping is just bad luck or pure s*upidity.

Spoiler

Such as the fate of the adopted girl. The MC happens to have a friend in the same school so the screenshot of the fake gets saved and ruins her life in the Xu family.

Sooo she decides to try and mu*der the MC which ends up leaving her paralysed and the M fine.

[collapse]

It all happens too fast to really make a connection with the characters or story. Even the romance feels out of place.

Only a recommended if you want something quick to read. <<less

This was a forgettable novel.

The author spent more time repeatedly describing how gorgeous, appealing, ethereal, and extremely talented the MC was than writing about a memorable and unique plot.

Moreover, the antagonists of this novel for some reason hated the MC to death as if that was their only purpose in life. It felt like whenever they see the MC's goddess like visual, all their common sense and smarts just flew out of the window.

Lastly, the author had a penchant for adding villains almost every other chapter which made this novel... more>> quite tiring to read even with how short it was.

I don't think this book qualifies as being in the romance genre, but I hesitate to remove it because others might feel differently. The romantic subplot tag is more accurate than listing this as a romance, imo. The title really says it all, the actual story just revolves around face slapping as the MC chases her acting career. But as a result when the adopted sister's real personality is exposed, the chapters start to feel rushed and the story wraps up quickly. The author spent so much time building up... more>> to that point, I got the impression the author didn't have anything planned past that. I'd have added another star if the the ending hadn't felt rushed.

a note about the male lead's age:
Spoiler

though the book never outright says the male lead's age, a context clue near the end suggests he's around 11 years older, give or take a year. Reader beware, if that much of an age gap bothers you.

Time pass read. The translation is good. Review from this point will be rant. Pls ignore.

Spoiler

This is a typical adopted daughter suppressing original daughter story. The character development is not good. It fell flat. In every chapter author mentions MC is a beauty. I understand she is beautiful but it becomes repetitive after a point. Face slapping is not even that good. The romance it outright a joke. I could see no chemistry between FL and ml. FL's character is portrayed as an ice beauty. And the adopted daughter is just like a c*ckroach. She was not required till the end of the novel.

Plot was very typical, but I was expecting that with these sorts of novels. Characters seemed flat since you don't actually learn anything about anyone.

All in all, this all this story was just average and dull for the most part.

Honestly, you could do away with the romance genre tag for this novel but keep the romantic subplot tag since it sort of was there. Though tbh, there was just about 1 sentence's worth, if even that, that alluded to the fact that the 'ML', if you can even call him... more>> that, liked her.

Then you have to wait until
Spoiler

Extra 2 for a definitive answer that the 'ML' liked her

.

I say 'ML' because they barely had any interaction outside of acting together in a few films. They few interactions that did happen outside of filming time it was brief with no hint of romance at all; just straightforward like you would talk to an acquaintance. <<less

Somehow, I get it why this story got an average rating.

Usually, I love face slapping novel but this novel felt so bland to me. The characters also weren't captivating enough and tended to be forgotton as soon as the story ended. The villains were also the standard brainless type with the ability to cast a petty scheme at most and it didn't take too much intelligence to defeat them.

But I also feel that MC wasn't that smart. I don't think so at the beginning since she was a formidable actress... more>> in the past but soon my impression was overturned by how dull her way of taking revenge was. Even her evidence to bring down her fake sister was provided by her fan.

The romance part also didn't bring much help to elevate the story. They didn't have much interaction and dialogues so it felt that their interests to each other was a bit out of the blue.

Well, at least, the story was short so it didn't take long to finish. <<less

This is a pretty generic real/fake daughter drama, but it has a reasonable pace and doesn't overdo the melodrama too much, which lends well to it not dragging on or feeling sluggish. It doesn't do anything particularly well, but it also doesn't do anything poorly. It's a good popcorn read, to pass the time when you have nothing better and you aren't able to get involved in something requiring more time commitment.
