Rebirth of a Star General

Description

The ancient saying goes: Most generals come from Guan Xi, while ministers come from Guan Dong.

He Yan was born to be a Star General.

She was merely a stepping stone for her family, and was used as her brother’s substitute. She had fought on the battlefields for years, bringing peace to Xi Qiang, stopping the barbarians… When her brother recovered, she gave up her position with great laurels brought to her name. Without further ado, she was married off.

During her married life, she was forsaken by her husband and even suffered from a strange illness, thereby losing her eyesight…

The young and pretty concubine stood in front of her, speaking softly: “The decoction you drank that made you blind was instructed by the elders of your family. As you know, the dead tell no tales. If you lived, you would be your family’s greatest threat!”

A great general of her time, the heroine of the country, died pitifully in the hands of those shameless women, who only knew to fight for a man’s favor… How absurd!

When she opened her eyes again, she had become the drill fields officer’s daughter, who was weak and arrogant, innocent and naive.

They had stolen her glory, taken her life, lead her army and betrayed her feelings! She had crawled back from the depths of hell and would take back everything she had lost, one by one.

Bring the world under her feet and with her beauty and nobility, overwhelm the nine prefectures!

But would she get out easily once she entered the barracks?

Hardly did she begin her adventures when He Yan met her arch-enemy of the previous lifetime, that young hunk whose “enemies would retreat as soon as he attacked”.

The chic and cool female general versus the handsome and ravenous young man. Two efficient generals team up to conquer the world!

First of all, it was really a long journey in reading this. But I really did read it till the end. It was kinda sad at first due to MC's experience but after that it was really fun and nice to read as she counterattack and take revenge to those people who deserve death. And I like how the progress of the MC's love story is. It was slow pace romance but at the same time, it was already started from the beginning hehe.

Though, at first, I was totally angry... more>> how ML bullies MC during her training and not knowing her true identity. But as when the ML realized he loves the MC, he now bullies the dogs attracted to MC's charm. It's really sweet. The fact that the ML truly loves the MC very much and time to time gets jealous for her. Sigh~ This kind of man who is so endearing is really hard to find or just didn't exist at all in reality.

However, when there is sweetness and happiness, there is also bitterness and sadness. The fact that the reality about war is truly a tragic thing.

It really hurts my heart how many people died. It leaves my heart in pain as if I was experiencing the people I love gone and leaving all alone grieving and reminiscing all those memories we experience together. Ahh~ I really don't want to experience such a thing. Just imagining it, I really don't know what to do. My heart still aches... Even characters in this story makes me sad. The realistic of this story, the fact that war stole life of someone dear and that we don't know who will die and who will live for another day.

Ahh~ I'm still dwelling on the characters who died.....😭😭

I don't want to read such tragic thing anymore huhuhuhu.... My heart aches..... Still it aches.....

I think this story will make me remember for my whole life even if I can't remember the title, I will still remember the story and how it goes, even if it's not everything that I remember. I will surely remember.... <<less

This novel is a new fresh air for the fans of this author Qian Shan Cha Ke. The story line and the FL's character are taking another route, which is great.

The MC, our FL is diffrent from other novel's FL from the sam author. This Novel's FL, He Yan is bubbly, open minded, heroic, hard working and strong but she does not scheming and also not heavy minded.

I loved her shameless and humor, how she made the ML speechless many times.

Of course for ML, he is the most smart and... more>> beautiful man in the entire kingdom/dynasty ???. I suspected the author has deep obsession for this type of man (LOL).

This story mostly about military training and warfare. But don't worry, this is not boring at all with our shameless and proud He Yan, the Female General.

I laugh and cry when read this novel, it's refreshing and enjoyable reading journey.

Highly recommend this novel as one of the best reads. <<less

I couldn't stand the strong feminism in the story at first - the careful reiteration of what females are and are not allowed to do and how exceptional the FL is in defying everything, not to mention how perfectly she can do everything due to hard work. I just wanted to read a good story, not a sermon. I'd rather be convinced through the story points than the lecturing tone.

However, there is one conclusion that the author does actually leave for the readers to come to on their own during... more>> one of the battles to defend a starving city. The battle arcs have honestly both been difficult to read because of the rich side character development, and their subsequent tragic endings. This second battle though was an interesting parallel to some of the "tradwife" movement. A strong concubine is satisfied with how she's managed to use her wits and beauty to secure a stable future for herself. She might like her partner, but more than that, she sees their relationship as an equal exchange and a job for her to fulfill. She is empowered and enlightened, but at the same time, not as empowered or enlightened as she thinks. Her life of ease and luxury, while earned through her own hard work, is still at someone else's whim. And no matter how well she manages the other person, at the end of the day, she can never fully control whether she will be abandoned or worse. This is the danger of relying on someone else for everything. People change and their needs change and you need to constantly worry about whether you can handle their latest need. <<less

Made an account just to write that this is my favorite Chinese webnovel, haha. Sure, it might not be the most artistic literature in the world, but boy is it a treat to read. It’s also really easy to read—the plot doesn’t drag and it’s not taxing (this is me telling you to just pick this up).

I’m not great with words so I’ll just write the things that I would want to see when I plan to read a novel (I apologize, I really would want to write about how... more>> beautiful and romantic and devastating this novel is but my skills are too lacking).

  • Cross dressing but it doesn’t get annoying when it’s revealed that she’s a woman (fans of this trope may get what I mean).
  • Actual slow burn that makes sense.
  • (cough cough this is super important to me especially in the world of romance novels) No s*xual harassment performed by our darling male lead. By that I mean he doesn’t even do non-consensual kisses. Do you understand how rare that is???
  • Angsty but not at all tragedy (tons of comedy here). Though I will admit that I almost embarrassingly cried. War stories always get me.
  • Lovely side characters that are fleshed out.
  • Just fantastic relationship dynamics that make sense and don’t seem forced.
  • The main plot is romance. But the side plot is super fire too and you truly root for our lovable silly MC.
  • Speaking of our MC, she’s quintessentially shonen dumb and hardworking, which is my favorite character archetype. If you’re bothered by that, she has plenty of cool and clever screen time too.
  • Oh yeah, ML is great too, not just cause of the no s*xual harassment thing. Sweet guy. Coolest kid on the block.
There are so many good things I want to say about this novel if only I were more eloquent. Alas, my destiny as a reader can only tell you this: read and decide for yourself. <<less

Worth reading if you have run out of things to read but this along with the author's other works are really just average.

Story is interesting enough (think Mulan but slightly different) however the author always has these elements that make her work just okay instead of exceptional. (Please note that these would include some spoilers)

    • Abilities that don't make sense. In the author's other works, the MCs have supernatural memory abilities. It didn't make sense how the memory of the MCs were so clear -- even for things that shouldn't be possible (ie Malicious Empress MC remembering another guy's speech even though she was busy ogling another guy when it was being said). Here it's similar but even more preposterous. I can understand a blind person enhancing their other senses to interact with the world but a blind person being able to guess the side of the dice just from the sound? That's infeasible. She mentions things like each side of the dice having a different sound. I can suspend disbelief if it's a dice she's used all her life but her just waltzing in to a casino (which is also most likely noisy) and being able to predict the exact dice position? That's infeasible.
    • MC is supposed to be a general but is absolutely clueless about ML suspecting her even though she shows abilities that aren't within the potential of a new recruit. If she were just a normal soldier who just has incredible physical abilities but not much wit, then it's fine. But she was a general in her past life. How can she not understand that she can be misunderstood for being a spy given all her unconventional abilities? She also doesn't seem to have any foresight about subterfuge. She couldn't seem to predict that her former older brother would use war to kill off her former trusted confidants in the army and is surprised when this happens. How is that something that a general should be surprised about?
    • To combine the first and second points, author focuses on abilities that shouldn't even be focused on. It's like making a character Mary Sue as possible even if certain traits aren't even necessary for the narrative. Then they forget to make sense of the character inconsistencies. It's a bit grating (especially for this novel)
    • Author tends to make subpar villains. I admit I haven't exactly gotten in depth here so this may change but in all her other novels, villains mostly just feel like one person with a different name + a slight difference in variation (like one being slightly more cowardly or more patient). No one ever feels remorse and the villains usually barely have any redeeming characteristics outside of physical appearance and their assumed intelligence before it drops once the MC/ML appears.
    • There is some level of misogyny in the author's works. This may also change once I get more in depth in the novel but since I just finished Ill Fated Consort, I can say that the author never seems to treat female villains well. Almost all of them are just there to treat the MC badly because of jealousy or perceived slight (even if they've only fallen into their own traps prior) and never have any guilt nor remorse. I don't mind having these types of villains but for the author to make all her female villains like this shows misogyny and pretty much just goes with the idea that all females who are not in line with the MC are all wrong and hateful.

I really liked the story and the FL but f*ck the ML was annoying. He's the most annoying male lead I ever saw. He's the only reason why I put 2 star and not 5

Spoiler

I stop at the chapter 105 and during their whole interaction he was suspicious of the FL because she was too good at being a soldier. Normally I would understand but after all that time, seeing her risk her life for her comrades, doing her best like all the time. In the novel they say that since she's a woman she had to work a lot more than everyone else so when the others are sleeping she's still training. I can understand you don't want to take a potential spy in your unit but seriously after everything she did just why you a**hole. And he's just so arrogant and annoying. They say in the novel that it's because it's his way to show his affection but if it's the case I would prefer him to hate me I'm not a f*cking masochist. Like the first time they see each other he call the FL small, dumb and weak and tell her that no matter her efforts she will never succeed like how toxic is that. And when she finally succeed, he take away all her credit for 50 f*cking chapter every time an instructor try to tell him that now we can trust her with his f*cking "she's suspicious ". Like that guy really got problems. How can he be that suspicious?!

[collapse]

The worst for me is in between the 90-100 chapter

Spoiler

During a banquet after she take the place of gis nephew because he didn't want a marriage, she noticed that the wine that he's about to drink contain the same poison that made her blind in her past life. She stops him for drinking it and actually end up blind again like how traumatizing. She eventually get her sight back after a day but that's still super scary 😨. She decide to fake blindness to trick their enemies but that dick. Not only he never thanks for her sacrifice but also suspect her even more and use her as a bait. She could have die for real this time and that could have exposed her real identity to her family who I remind you kill her in her past life and made her blind.

[collapse]

In short, that guy is an ingratful b*tch. I like the novel, it's really good but that guy is so unlikable that I can't keep reading that. If you can accept such a d*ck as a male lead, that's perfect because he's the only stain in this perfect novel. <<less

For me, this story is slow yet interesting. I like this book because it didn't stray out too far from it's title.

This is a story of a female general, who lived a miserable first life as a substitute. In her second life, she vowed to get everything back. Yet she got more than what she hoped for.

The romance is good. Most of the time, it was funny. And at times it was heart-wrenching. Not only the romance of our main pair, the side pair (s) are also good. It was... more>> a pity the other pairs don't have much story-time.

The main characters are really interesting, they're so humane. They have flaws, but I couldn't hate that flaws. On another side, the side characters are also funny and have their own stories.

I love that almost every part got their ends tied nicely. Overall, this is a good novel. I couldn't wait for the translation to complete. <<less

A really wide ranging adventure of a story. There's genuine and clear character growth that you can root for, and a satisfying slow burn romance to enjoy. I think one of the biggest differences from the author's other works is in how well fleshed out the characters are, particularly the side characters and antagonists. No significant paper villains here. And the story doesn't forget those characters even when the plot moves past them, which is particularly enjoyable and moving. The story is overall fairly light, but not without it's serious... more>> and sad moments, the result is a good balance between smiles and tears. <<less

My introduction to Qian Shan Cha Ke was reading The Rebirth of the Malicious Empress of Military Lineage, and at the time I greatly enjoyed it despite its many flaws. Following that, I ended up reading Marriage of the Di Daughter (and completing it by machine translating it with DeepL) and The Rebirth of an Ill-Fated Consort. The author excels at writing entertaining schemes and face slapping scenes, which is something I greatly enjoy and motivated me to read the author's other novels as well, despite getting annoyed by recycled... more>> plot points, excessive wordiness, dragged out irrelevant nonsense, and cringeworthy edgy r*pe and gore scenes.

I love revenge stories so despite getting annoyed by the aforementioned flaws in the author's previous novels, I started reading Rebirth of a Star General as soon as I saw it being translated. Being impatient and, in the end a fan of the author (despite my complaints!), I also machine translated the rest of the novel (almost the entire thing lol) with DeepL. What I discovered is that this novel is a pretty refreshing departure from some of these weaknesses in the author's previous novels. There's no r*pe, the gore is way less intense and the main character's personality is very different from her predecessors in the author's other novels. The male lead, however, is pretty similar to the other ones, and is completely OP in every single way, although thankfully he doesn't outshine the main character once she really gets going! Speaking of the male lead, the author's tendency to write huge blocks of text using weird purple prose to describe how beautiful he is over and over and over again is present in this novel as well, but not to the same extent as in Malicious Empress. I honestly can't imagine a person reading them and not rolling their eyes, but they don't really detract from the story since you can skip them without missing anything important. The romance is very slow, but the relationship between the MC and ML is wonderful both before and after they fall in love. There's also much less focus on scheming since the main character is more prone to using her superior combat abilities and knowledge of military strategy to achieve her goals, instead of setting up elaborate schemes. There's still plenty of satisfying face slapping, though! In contrast with the author's other main characters, this main character's personality is straightforward, positive and she actually values human life to some extent. However, as with the author's other MCs, given how insanely smart and talented she is, I have a hard time buying how she could possibly have made the mistakes she made in her previous life.

Seeing the author explore some slightly different territory than in their previous work was interesting, and I greatly enjoyed reading this novel overall. Despite this, I would say that it contained a higher amount of what, in my opinion, amounts to unnecessary filler and boring and overly wordy chapters where very little plot or character development occurs. In my view, it would be a much, much, much better reading experience if the length was trimmed by as much as 50%. In the end though, I would still recommend this to fans of the author's previous books or anyone who enjoys a good revenge story.

TLDR:

This novel is just as wordy and overly long as the author's other works, but isn't as gory and the MC isn't as cruel and merciless. Rather than focusing on courtyard drama and scheming, the focus here is on military advancement, which is new ground for the author. The romance develops slowly, but not frustratingly so. <<less

The premise of the story is dumb.

What are these idiots going to do when the fake general will have to do his actual job? No knowledge of his commanders, soldiers or military skills, but surely he will just make something happen.

A jealous ruler killing a rising star or the family abandoning her to not suffer repercussions of her becoming Mulan would be one thing, but this is just so mind-boggling dumb that it has to be called out.

The FL herself sucks and seems to lack any kind of attribute of... more>> someone actually going through war. A pretty face has her dream and hold-in. She lacks understanding of military law and ignores everything.

Her immediate shilling for the ML is just disgusting. Instead of standing on her own merits and considering her methods superior, she instantly falls in line with the ML line of reasoning, which is objectively dumber. ML is nothing else than a literal nepo-baby, while she worked her ass off to get her position, but somehow she considers him her equal. It's insane. No one would feel that.

FL lacks caution, planning and any kind of strategic thought. She literally pulls magical abilities out of her ass, from magically being able to hear unknown dice numbers to instant muscle memory.

ML is the classical male equivalent of an ice queen and is hyped up from the beginning to the end. As unrealistic as the next one and lacks anything unique about him.

Overall, the story is driven by plot armor against winning against scenario ABC. FL is in no way a convincing former general who actually faced a battlefield and worked her way up from a grunt. <<less

God-tier. Random read but definitely unforgettable. I’ll read it again soon bc it’s THAT good

Also, yes, there are numerous side-stories of other characters but they definitely do not stick out in a weird side quest kind of way. The side stories were very heartfelt and shined in their own way

F*ck... My heart...

I've read other works from this author. And usually (generally speaking about chinese romance novels) the MC is a cold/calculative beauty that participates in harem/household intrigue. If it's rebirth/soul reincarnation caused by an unfair death, it will focus on the revenge aspect of it. However, this MC is different.

He Yan is silly but cunning, funny but smart. She's headstrong and resilient, and she does it all with a smile on her face even if she hurts inside. Of course, she wasn't originally that way. But dying once and... more>> being away from your cr*ppy family can do incredible things to your personality.

I di have a bit of a problem with the new family though.

Spoiler

Nothing against them, really, they are all so sweet and caring that it hurts. Why? Because the real HY (the og owner of the body) is no longer with them. I understand that giving MC the opportunity of being loved by her family can be taken as compensation for the unfair life she lived until then. Still, I don't usually like switcheroos like these because it feels deceiving.

[collapse]

Also, you do have to suspend your belief with them. There aren't conflicts that arise because of the personality change, which is difficult to believe. It can be chalked up to the gather being too much of a daughter doting father to care ig. Could have been better.

I loved the way almost everyone gets character development in this story. Unfortunately, some of the villains are too two dimensioned. But at some point I kind of felt bad for MC's cousin, but he deserved to bear the brunt of his actions anyway.

As said before, this is not an entirely revenge oriented story, which is kind of nice imo. Why? So MC's life and development aren't restricted by seeking revenge. As a person, she has other ambitions and desires, which I love in a female character. For her, military life is not just a way to get her just desserts, it's her sweat, tears and blood, it's her calling.

ML is funny on his own accord. The typical cold, extremely handsome and intelligent guy that is in a powerful position. But it is made clear that there's a lot of humanity behind that handsome exterior that everyone seems to swoon over and even label as uncaring.

The relationship is sweet with its own little problems, most of them happen because of MC's way of thinking (can't blame he though).

The other characters are very well done. Some complain about the excessive backstories but imo most of them are well-made. They leave an impact on their world and on other characters like many human interactions do irl. Had a difficult time remembering some of MC's friends/comrades, but that's on me. If anything, my only complain would be the way the Uttos are portrayed. They being 'dumb', 'arrogant' and 'barbaric' made them too easy to defeat. And also too easy to hate, I would have loved to see more complexity on them.

And here is my meltdown (spoilers from the end of the novel)

Spoiler

YAN HE NOOOOOOOOOO *wails* AND HER FRIENDS, AND THE 2ML'S SERVANT GIRL, WHY? WHYYYYY?

[collapse]

*sighs* I mean, is kinda realistic in that aspect ig. But... My heart... *sobs*

A strong reccomendation: Avoid spending long periods of time between chapters while reading this novel. If possible read it in one go. It will hit harder that way. <<less

"Then the moon is yours now."

Top novel of 2022 for me! Don't worry about it being long, I blew threw a 100 chapters in 2 days! My favorite novel from this author! Also I can't express how much I love YANYAN and DUDU!! Both are generals! My favorite female lead ever!

Spoiler

He Yan is our female lead, and her personality is like a mixed of everything. She is dorky, outgoing, friendly, courageous, and sometimes a little shameless lol. I really like how she considers people's feelings, and cares about her friends a lot. She is also very charming, and handsome, especially when she dresses as a man, and fights. Despite the brutality of her previous life, she does not seek out for revenge as much as the FL in ME, and the author mentions that it is because she wants to take the opportunity to live her life to the fullest since she had the opportunity to be reborn.

Xiao Dudu or Xiao Huaijun is our male lead, and he is the type that is cold on the outside, but warm on the inside. He has always treated the female lead well whether it is her previous life or their current life. He protects her when it is needed, but he is not the possessive type who controls all her actions, and lets the FL shine. As well.

It's a happy ending for the leads, but a bad ending for all the side couples : (

It's worth the 2 days binge read!!!!

This story was truly a gem. It wasn't overly fluffy or dramatic or angst. It had the right pacing and also accounted for the character development of a lot of characters. Everyone has their own background, motives and personality. Although the romance developed slowly, it was the kind of development that would make their romance grow on you. This story was able to portray realistic endings of several couples, whether it be bitter and sad or happy and eternal. Aside from the romance, the... more>> family relationship and friendships were also tackled. Albeit the villains were quite dumb and the ML and FL being a bit Gary Sue-ish and Mary Sue-ish (tho from hardwork), it was able to show some realistic scenarios like how people could die in a war
Spoiler

even if they were an important supporting character/ally of the leads

[collapse]
.

Anyway, I was here for some dose of romance and I was duly satiated.
Spoiler

The male lead was the only one who actually cared about FL, even in her past/original body. He was there silently helping her out in the dark ever since they became classmates though it wasn't out of love, but because the FL reminded him of his younger years. FL truly lived a tragic past life in her original body. As during ancient times women didn't have much rights, even though she was a general, she still followed her family's orders. FL really also just wanted to be loved and appreciated by someone so she was very obedient to her family and got married into a wolves' den. ML was also there when she tried to commit su*cide after being blind and he was the one who told her to live and be the best blind there is. I love how they were destined to be together in the end after missing out during her 'past' life.

[collapse]

I also loooove how I couldn't predict and understand the ML's thoughts in the most part of the novel. I love how he supports the FL and protects her in his own way. There were quite a lot of times where the ML saved the FL but I like how the novel stated that the FL could indeed save herself but that would leave her to be injured. As much as independent FLs are awesome, strong and independent FLs that knows when to depend on their MLs are admirable. :) <<less

MTL till chapter 143, it's actually readable.

The plot is simple and interesting, FL and ML interaction in the past was revealed little by little in the current life.

Just like XJX in RMEML, ML also a beautiful general, full of mystery.

I'll continue MTL-ing this then re-read when the translation completed.

This is the best novel I have read but I don't read that many c-novel. Han Ye is so resilient and still have the same personality after rebirth except no longer naive. She learn from the past. The MC is a very well written character. She face up difficulty and keep moving forward. And, the timeline just continue so the revenge is really satisfactory.

The other characters are also great especially those who close with MC. Everytime MC lost someone, I cry too since those characters are written so humanly that... more>> the lost feel so big. I guess the last 2 chapter are written because they're the most significant loss. <<less

I read the novel in my mother language (half well translated, half machine trans) and I come here only to write a review.

I discovered the story after watching a C-drama of the actress Zhou Ye. I like her a lot so I searched for her dramas. And I found out that she starred in the drama based on this novel, the drama titled The legend of female general. Zhou Ye played the role of He Yan. And the ML was acted by Ryan Cheng.

About the novel, I have to... more>> say this is the first time I had the patience to read till the end of a machine translation. Because the story is so good.

It's not only a revenge story. It's about family love, friendship, comrades... And the romance, it's slow burnt but it's sweet. The bond between the ML and FL through her two lives is deep, even though they themselves didn't recognise...

The FL is adorable. I like her so much. The ML is indeed "the moon" to her. He accompanies her, lighted up her lonely and tough road, embraced her each time she falls.

The beginning chapter (about He Yan first life) and the last epilogue (about a supporting couple) made me cry so much.

I cant wait to see the drama. Only watching some short videos of making scenes, I've already fell in love with both actor and actress. <<less
