Rebirth of a Star General

Description

The ancient saying goes: Most generals come from Guan Xi, while ministers come from Guan Dong.

He Yan was born to be a Star General.

She was merely a stepping stone for her family, and was used as her brother’s substitute. She had fought on the battlefields for years, bringing peace to Xi Qiang, stopping the barbarians… When her brother recovered, she gave up her position with great laurels brought to her name. Without further ado, she was married off.

During her married life, she was forsaken by her husband and even suffered from a strange illness, thereby losing her eyesight…

The young and pretty concubine stood in front of her, speaking softly: “The decoction you drank that made you blind was instructed by the elders of your family. As you know, the dead tell no tales. If you lived, you would be your family’s greatest threat!”

A great general of her time, the heroine of the country, died pitifully in the hands of those shameless women, who only knew to fight for a man’s favor… How absurd!

When she opened her eyes again, she had become the drill fields officer’s daughter, who was weak and arrogant, innocent and naive.

They had stolen her glory, taken her life, lead her army and betrayed her feelings! She had crawled back from the depths of hell and would take back everything she had lost, one by one.

Bring the world under her feet and with her beauty and nobility, overwhelm the nine prefectures!

But would she get out easily once she entered the barracks?

Hardly did she begin her adventures when He Yan met her arch-enemy of the previous lifetime, that young hunk whose “enemies would retreat as soon as he attacked”.

The chic and cool female general versus the handsome and ravenous young man. Two efficient generals team up to conquer the world!

It’s my 2nd time reading it and the story still touches me the same way. Love the author and read her other novels multiple times as well.

The struggles both characters goes through especially the female lead is touching to me. I cried a few tears, even with MTLing the novel, when the novel was expanding on the past of the FL.

I love the FL, love the ML, love the romance, love the story.

I really recommend this novel. Like other novels of the same writer, the ‘Rebirth of a Star General’ is also a dramatic story about reborn/revenge, but it also added a heart-warming touch about friendship and family love. The FL and MC character are impressive and very lovable. I also like that the story has a comedic tone which make it fun to read.

This book is absolutely amazing and the translation is done very well. There not many cliché scenes however it is one where reality of life is expounded very well. The female lead is very hard working one and one thing that makes it different from other such novels with similar plot is that about the way it not to long and it’s just the right amount. At 100 the translator have written as end of volume 2 and waiting for translation to continue 😊

A case of "it's not you, its me".

Its actually really well written, the MCs struggles are heartwrenching and you cant help but support her. The series of events all make sense. I didnt really like the ML as I found him kind of... bare minimum? I feel like they could've added a little something to him to make me more invested, but imo they didnt and so I was less invested in the romance. Also this is the first slow burn in a while that frustrated me. I do in... more>> fact feel like it could've happened sooner and that made me frustrated (I hate feeling frustrated at books btw I drop books for this same reason). The revenge and villains irritated me as well. In general, I think either the pacing was messing with me or I wasn't in a patient mood when I read this.

I, however, did not complete this book, I read up to about 100 and then skipped through the rest until the end, so maybe it gets alot better. I dont hate this book, it's just one of those that weren't for me which I'm sad about because I like this author's other works. And the plot sounded like my taste too so I got comfortable to read it over several days, but alas. <<less

My favorite among her works!! There's not much face slapping and annoying female villain but this is written well. It's heart warming. It is focused on FL and ML love development and some of the FL's grievances.

FL is not calculating not similar to her other works where the FL is so smart. The FL here is straightforward yet not so s*upid. She's also hard working and doesn't join in annoying female quarrel. The ML... I really like him for MC ❤️

I feel that this novel has inspired me and touched my soft spots many times. Rebirth of a Star General might be slow paced but every sentences are worth to observe. I don't have much to say because it is a great story, especially, when the author creates memorable characters. The elements of story are well balanced, just the right amount of romance, comedy, and heaviness. I assure you it is a happy ending but it left me a bitter sweet taste as it getting realistic and nostalgic by the... more>> end of the story.

Plot & Setting

Spoiler

It is not about a typical transmigration-revenge with many face slapping, it is beyond that, something that touch humanity (just as stated by some reviewers). Through the lenses of passive reincarnated protagonist, we will follow her journey meeting people who will broaden her view and reaching her dream while trying to resolve her own conflict. With the warfare and patriarchal like setting, we got the gist how the characters are brought up trough their behavior and actions. For the plot, some may feel the minor plots are irrelevant to the story and dragging, but I think those are the charming points which enrich the story and gives life to some minor characters as well but also giving a natural development to the main characters as well.

Character

Spoiler

The characters are dynamic and progressive. First of all, the protagonist itself is a figure of 'hope' within a patriarchal society, which allowing her to become the spectacle who overcome discrimination and trial within the environment she is living to reach her goal. Someone who is trying be her own person. Meanwhile, the male lead appeared as a stoic individual wished nothing but warmth which he unconsciously longed for. Someone who is coping with his emotion in silence until he met the protagonist. The interesting part is that not only the story revolving around the protagonist, the characters around her shared a fair share of spotlight about themselves and how they solve their own conflict. How they view things and their character development at the end are varied. Each characters had their own conflict, goal and role which cause a natural chain of story which is quite close to real life. Even at the end, the characters have a well-deserved but decent closure.

note: But seriously, that Chu guy is the biggest sad boy. He is one of my fave grey characters.... : (I'll just fantasised that he got reincarnated and find his new found warmth which he had failed to obtain.

In conclusion, the novel is beautiful and emotionally investing. The author had beautifully weaved the setting, plot. and characters into union. <<less

I have just finished this novel. It is a very interesting novel in which the writing style is completely difference from this authors others novels. Very interesting to see the growth and maturity of this author. There are much less long winded descriptions of her Male leads. Still very descriptive but not as intense as her earlier works. This story is not just about revenge taking from beginning to end. It is more about the growth and characters developments of the leads. The supporting characters are given fair presence. And... more>> the ending of the novel is quite realistic. In war, there are losses and it can be painful.

Romance between the leads are slow burner... but it does fit with the narrative of the story. The Male lead took so.... so... so long to realised how much he loves this person... But when he realised, he wasted no time to claim her.... There are not many lovey dovey moments but this author does have a habit of indulging in such even in her other novels.

I really enjoy this novel as I feel very much attached to a great number of characters. Thus even the journey of the side characters completes this novel. This story does not make me feel extreme anger, hatred or pity on behalf the female lead. Her character give rise to positive emotions. And I cannot help but fall in love with her. And it is not down to how just Beautiful she is, etc.

The story development in this novel makes reading more enjoyable and relaxing. I love how she coax her lover and how she "controls" him. She is such a lovable and positive character to be friends with. She is like sunshine that lights up the world of the lonely, cynic or bitterness.

I hope to read more works from this author. Thank you for a enjoyable novel. <<less

I rarely write reviews. In fact, this is my first one. Reading this novel was so satisfying truly. The story is very heartfelt, the FL is a very likable, endearing character and the story truly conveys the tragic circumstances of women in that era. The ML, at first glance, seems like a common stereotypical character in this kind of novels but he is actually very unique and deep. The side characters also have their own Stories, backgrounds and aspirations which I like a lot.

Honestly, I have read many novels of... more>> such type where the Female Lead in Ancient China goes back in time after dying from a betrayal or because her husband was a as*hole and honestly all these novels seem repetitive and same to me. The same plot devices, same Petty schemes between women. This novel was so unique because it provides a different perspective.

Just give it a try. <<less

Read it!

The female lead may initially come off as a bit naive, but it gradually becomes clear that there’s more beneath the surface. I rated this 4 stars because her intense focus in the early chapters felt somewhat frustrating and unrealistic—almost as if she hadn’t learned from her past life. However, the author’s thoughtful exploration of deeper themes makes her perspective more understandable as the story develops. She’s pure-hearted, sincere, and incredibly hardworking, which makes it easy to root for her.

I also appreciated how intelligent the male lead is and... more>> how naturally their relationship develops over time. The mutual respect between the two characters is especially refreshing, setting them apart from the more possessive dynamics often seen with yandere male leads. <<less

Another novel by Qian Shan Cha Ke, and I totally agree with those who say it's more about familial love — and that’s exactly what makes it special.

The story is written beautifully. All the characters are very likeable and feel truly alive.

I can absolutely see myself rereading this in the future. Highly recommended!

In Rebirth of a Star General, in order to maintain the family's standing, He Yan has had to pretend to be her male cousin despite the fact that she is a girl. After amassing numerous awards and military fame, He Yan is forced to hand it over to said cousin and get married. Except, her family decides that she has to die. When He Yan's soul transmigrates to a new body, He Yan decides to regain those military awards and fame, except this time it will be under her own... more>> name. In both her past and present lives, she finds help in the aloof Xiao Jue.

I read this book because I'd already read two others by the same author. I thought it would be pretty much the same, because the author loves a rebirth, but I was shocked by how well this was done. The author made good decisions and learned from mistakes with their previous novels. Is "reborn girl gets revenge" basically still their modus operandi? Yes, but this one was much lighter, a lot less gory, and the blood siblings weren't terrible.

Having good family members on both sides makes a WORLD of difference.

If you like Transmigration, characters that radiate positive vibes, and a good romance plot in the midst of your epic journeys, then this is for you. <<less

It's very different in tone compared to the authors other work, as He Yan is not engulfed in revenge and her primary goal is to live in a way that will have her name remembered.

The premise itself isn't new but it does stand out as He Yan returns to the military, wheres the other plots that revolve around a betrayed general/swordswoman becoming a noble lady after her death usually have them remain in their role as noble ladies. I also loved that the ML is not uselessly overprotective of her,... more>> because I always find this condescending and s*upid when applied to a really skilled martial artist. As for the so called 2nd ML, I don't know if I would consider him one tbo, and his setting is somewhat lacking in determination? He lingers in this weird state of yes no maybe, I don't think anything he did really made a strong enough impact, and in the end even his resentment was weak
Spoiler

-what with him doing nothing to that fiance of is, who also lacked in the end because the obsession was not really there when she was last shown, it would've been better to up the ante there instead of having her so quickly let go of her obsession and then just poof her away, his father's family also got nothing major happening to them-

[collapse]

As for the ending, I agree with some of the other reviewers that it really wasn't it. The deaths were meant to represent the unpredictable nature of life in war, but because it didn't really directly target the mains it felt lackluster and unnecessary,
Spoiler

especially the death of general Yan who died due to poison, when it is really weird for that arrow to have been poisoned at all? I mean the person who was supposed to take that arrow was just a small foot soldier and he protected him, but if that is so than it makes no sense for just that one arrow to have been poisoned in the entire war? It was a weak weak point in the plot.

The saddest thing about this novel is that I'll never get to read it for the first time again. I loved these characters, and the author did a wondeful job creating a world to feel invested in as they go about trying to save their nation and loved ones.

A real epic about living as one's true self, what it means and has meant to be a woman and yet what it looks like to have courage and advance through it all anyway.

Sure it's a novel about a girl overturning the... more>> heavens and defying the odds but if there was ever a time to be looking for encouragement and hope for being a woman in this world, it's now. <<less

I would like to sincerely thanks the translators who worked day and night for us to enjoy another novel. Thank you for your hard work.

Definitely it was different from author's other works such as Rebirth of The Malicious Empress and Rebirth of the Ill-fated consort. Neither did we see any tremendous face slapping, heart shattering conspiracies nor revenge. Just a soul who found a new body after wrongful death trying to establish herself.

The plot itself was not bad but often boring due constant subplots and flash backs while the main... more>> plot itself

resolved within 3/4 chapters. You can already guess all the good things that happened with the heroine was done by the hero. The most enjoyable part of the novel was the battle scenes and side characters. The subplots had their own emotions, which deny I can't either.

However, the author decided to kill the few key characters in the last ten chapters which I found utterly unnecessary. What was point of killing them in the last battle? I mean the main plot ended long ago and we are near the end so why just kill good characters only show how unique is MC. In fact from the last battle I didn't seen any prowess from the MC which was much need then this and the flowery overused sentences to describe her HEROISM.

To all who are reading this story, know that Hong Shan, Shitou, Hong Xiou, Yan he died in last. I felt that the story of the main couple had wrapped very quickly and the last chapter was focus on the tragedies of the side characters. I lost the spark of the MCs long ago. I know the author had written endings better than this so yeah truly disappointed. <<less

Agree with the review of xXLicorneXx, I also felt duped. Very good writing though, props to the talent of the author of course, but we’re just not the target audience. If you feel you aren’t too, just go and not read anymore so you won’t feel frustrated enough to write a long review xD. Also if you really liked the story, don’t let us spoil the good impressions for you. Just read the good ones.

Only thing that held up in this novel is the author’s motivation to write a light story unlike their previous works. Though the definition of “light” didn’t translate well to me as everything in this novel: the stolen credits, her death, her subordinates death, the political setting, her master, the ML’s backstory, literally everything except for... more>> her welcoming personality and the pining, nothing was going to be light or easygoing. Especially with the tragic backstory and ENDINGS of LITERALLY everybody around them LOL with no resolutions. Atleast in Malicious Empress, Pei Lang deserved that. No one in this story’s background characters did. When that could’ve been the case in the start, the story generally just floated around when the protagonist wasn’t really coming off as motivated for the length of the novel. So this story, with all its potential to either be a comedic satisfying lovestory, or an emotionally-driven revenge tale, was stuck in an unfortunate, ill-prepared, undeserving between.

I’ve stucked for so long just to see how the reveals are going to be handled and for the villains to get their deserved endings, but seeing as no one said anything remarkable about it, I’m letting it go now along with all my emotional investments to save my time and possibly read more story that I know I would like. Maybe Ill-fated Consort. <<less

The story isn't bad, it just isn't paced well and as someone mentioned, there were too many backstories for the smallest event.

Also, a few of the characterisations felt forced and didn't make sense in many instances, like there is no way on Earth would a hardened General be settled back into life of domesticity, not without a fight at least.

It's not a bad novel, it's decent.

The story sounds interesting on paper, but I could more or less guess what would happen once the boot camp arc started. I'm also not in favor with the kind of writing the novel utilizes, though I could've overlooked that if it wasn't for a glaring problem i'll talk about next.

Translation:

Here's the thing, the translation is good. Very good. The problem is that the translator site piles the text into one giant blob. It does not space out the text to make it easier... more>> for the readers to read.

Instead I often find myself starting to read the same damned sentence I already read or missing where i've gotten to.

Zooming in didn't really solve this issue either as my PC forced me to scroll right on long sentences.

As such the formatting? Of the text is one of the worst i've seen. And it is the sole reason I dropped the Novel at the point I did it. Otherwise i'd read further on to see how the story develop as its a mildly interesting story.

Characters:

I have little complaints here, they're well enough thought out.

Recommended? Yes and no, if you can get past the blob of text: Yes!, if not? No. <<less
