Rebirth of a Star General

Description

The ancient saying goes: Most generals come from Guan Xi, while ministers come from Guan Dong.

He Yan was born to be a Star General.

She was merely a stepping stone for her family, and was used as her brother’s substitute. She had fought on the battlefields for years, bringing peace to Xi Qiang, stopping the barbarians… When her brother recovered, she gave up her position with great laurels brought to her name. Without further ado, she was married off.

During her married life, she was forsaken by her husband and even suffered from a strange illness, thereby losing her eyesight…

The young and pretty concubine stood in front of her, speaking softly: “The decoction you drank that made you blind was instructed by the elders of your family. As you know, the dead tell no tales. If you lived, you would be your family’s greatest threat!”

A great general of her time, the heroine of the country, died pitifully in the hands of those shameless women, who only knew to fight for a man’s favor… How absurd!

When she opened her eyes again, she had become the drill fields officer’s daughter, who was weak and arrogant, innocent and naive.

They had stolen her glory, taken her life, lead her army and betrayed her feelings! She had crawled back from the depths of hell and would take back everything she had lost, one by one.

Bring the world under her feet and with her beauty and nobility, overwhelm the nine prefectures!

But would she get out easily once she entered the barracks?

Hardly did she begin her adventures when He Yan met her arch-enemy of the previous lifetime, that young hunk whose “enemies would retreat as soon as he attacked”.

The chic and cool female general versus the handsome and ravenous young man. Two efficient generals team up to conquer the world!

This story is good, but the slow pacing makes me hesitant to continue reading it despite the fact that the MTL is surprisingly readable (at least 85-90% readable). I guess, it's just too good to be read in MTL XD. The author's writing style is best enjoyed when the language is more natural. Ahhhhh but anyway, I've decided to drop it temporarily and come back for it later.

Summary: The FL is a reborn person (more specifically, after dying, she found herself possessing the body of a young girl from another... more>> family). In her previous life, she had been raised as a boy to substitute for her sickly cousin. Growing up, her temperament had always been that of a boy's, and thanks to her effort, she managed to not only enlist in the army but also make many meritorious deeds. Unfortunately for her, just when her career was on the rise, her male cousin came back, taking over the identity she had been living as for 18 years and forcing her to forget everything that she had accomplished. Not only that, but they also married her off and conspired to kill her to keep her mouth quiet. Now that she's been given a second chance, all she wants is to take revenge and finally get to live her own life.

The story is quite long-winded. Definitely not the same as your "fast-food"-like romance novels of the same genre. It's not all about drama and romance (in fact, it's the exact opposite, those things are only secondary). It's better described as a growing up story. We get to watch the FL as she strives to make a name for herself in this second life. All the while encountering familiar people from her past life. For example, the ML (who she had known previously, and was her "rival" General --- they were not close, but they had some pretty meaningful encounters.

I won't be rating this novel because I've yet to finish or get to the halfway point DX. But, right now, I'm thinking it's worth 4-4.5 stars out of 5. <<less

4.4. He Yan is pretty great, rather atypical for stories set in an ahistorical time. Enjoyed the story overall, but I do agree that I felt slightly disappointed by the romance focus towards the end. It was still decently balanced, but still.

Also, docked some points because a lot of battle strategies are copped from Romance Of The Three Kingdoms/records of the 3 kingdoms (although I don't remember which parts of ROTK are fictitious, there's a lot of overlap here). I love ROTK, but it was kind of unnerving to see... more>> the same strategies used and praised here. In any case, Three Kingdoms is (at least mostly) real (ish) history, so it's not unfair to use it in a novel and I guess it can be counted as a homage to Zhuge Liang, lmao. In any case, ROTK is famous and studied enough that any original CN readers should be able to tell, plus commonly borrowed from in general, so it's not an overly big issue except for making me pause briefly. The only thing is that I wish there were some more derivative strats that weren't so similar.

Spoiler

Sending straw men to scam arrows from the enemy, for one. Sending small grease-laden boats to burn the enemy's chained-together ships when a wise man predicts that there will be wind to turn the tide of the battle, for another. A variant of empty city strat, when He Yan's master sits atop the city gates with his Qin and deters the enemy after most of the city has already evacuated and there aren't enough troops, although he's more OP and deals real damage with his arrays compared to Zhuge Liang's bluff.

Damn... this author really loves to have a tragic side couple. And it's so well written to the point I get super emotional. Last novel it was the brother of the ML and this time there were two... I really want to crawl myself in this world just to somehow save at least the second tragic couple. ... more>>
Spoiler

First one; the teacher of the FL and his sweetheart the queen. Second one; Yan he and his wife. Both times the male dies.

The first one was already super sad but the second one was just heartbreaking. First letting us see him as an arrogant/agressive general. Later seeing him love his wife wholeheartedly and bragging about her. To then just letting him slowly die in the war when he was looking forward to seeing his child get born and looking forword to being a great dad. It really ripped my heart apart.

Although you can't really say it was a couple but the Chu guy (second ML) and the maid were also pretty tragic. I was actually rooting for the 2 but there is always a guy who can't get over the FL even years later. I just don't like that concept but it gets repeated so many time. I hoped he would have a happy ending with the maid but that went to hell because of the crown prince and Chu's stempother&fiance. But even if that didn't happen, the author would probably make it so that he still wouldn't get over the FL even if she's by his side.

He deserved a better ending. His life just too cruel without any real choice. The only options he had where between two kinds of hell. The maid once said that she knew his cruel side but I don'tagree with that. He didn't have much choice and had to be cruel but it wasn't something he liked. It was pretty clear because he was never cruel if he didn't have to be. If circumstances allowed it, he would always choose the kind way. So he really deserved a haply ending or at least an ending where he gets over the FL. But even that wasn't granted

[collapse]

This novel is great. The only complaint I have is the unnecessarily long flashbacks of too many people. But maybe that's what makes it more immersing. Still could have been a little less in my opinion. Like the old best friend of the ML. It was quite redundant.

Intrigue is a part of it but more on the background than the last novel. Not necessarily worse because of that but an observation. In the beginning it seemed more of a: intrigue/conspiracy on the front and romance in the back but it's actually the opposite.
Spoiler

Because the moment the ML realizes his feelings, the conspiracies and intrigue that was built ul slowly, gets solved pretty fast so that the focus can be more on the relationship progress. Not that I'm complaining. Their relationship is great and funny. Just a little disappointing how the built up was amounted to one big action and ML handing all the other evidence afterwards.

[collapse]

Solid 4.5/5

P.S.: After reading two novels of this author, I can almost for sure guess that they have a type: cold, ruthless but also a kind side, 100/10 pearless appearance, and a sad/lonely past that only the FL can take him out of it and gets to experience "normal" emotions (love, jealousy...) for the first time because of her and only her. But that seems to be in line with most Chinese MLs.

Just glad that he was a great father too. Because I always hate it when they make the father jealous of their own child because they "take away the attention of the FL".
Spoiler

Maybe because it was a daughter but well, I've seen too many MLs like this that make it hard for their children just so that they hand over their responsibilies to them to have more time with the FL and explore the world together

Writing this review at chapter 90.

I actually enjoyed reading this novel. It has a similar yet different vibe compared to the other works of the author. This novel is slow-paced and focuses more on the character build-up. Another thing that I like about this novel is that it really highlights the minor characters which is unusual for an isekai novels since they tend to focus more on the MC, but this one didn't. You'll grew to love the minor characters. And the relationship between the MC and ML is buildin... more>> up gradually which is fantastic.

Unfortunately, the translation's still ongoing. I tried reading the MTL but my head hurts after it so I'll just wait until the translation finishes. <<less

❤❤❤

very very very good!

the romance came later but hey it also came at the right time.

... more>> Character building is superb! Everyone grows up and change is inevitable - but in a good way.

This novel really made me "feel" that birth had nothing to do with what one can accomplish. Truely talented peoole may be rare but stubbornly dedicated ones are even more so.

Circumstances may have pampered a person when young but life will eventually force everyone to grow up sooner or later. Owning up not only for the mistakes they made but also for the regrets that can never be undone.

In summary: It is REALLY hard for ordinary people to understand the minds of great people. Like it is hard for those who had great ambitions to sympathize with the easy life of the unambitious.

Spoiler

PS: the villain died so easily in my opinion. maybe cause he's already so old and had no sons to take over? a son-in-law can be viewd as a son somewhat but will never compare to a biological one. There's lot of plot holes in the end but more importantly SEND A KNIFE TO THE AUTHOR!!! WHY DID YOU KILL THE LIVELIEST ONE OF THE BUNCH????? Hate you hate you.......i cried a river cause of you! imma gonna find ice now my eyes are swollen. Author also has great opinions about love. many cahracters are left single by choice and author-made circumstances like being killed by said author........ humhumhumhum

Very good so far.

My brisque review is that the FL is very likeable, the ML is very cool, personally I like him even though I don't know so much about him. FL is probably overpowered, but I'm sure the ML will be the same, and so will some other characters I'm sure, so I don't mind too much, they all worked hard.

The characters are all pretty deep, the worldbuilding is good so far too. I'm very curious to know more about the ML, so the novel is doing something right.

Excellent novel, as expected of the author ! The beginning might be slow for some people but for me it's like the calm before the storm and when the wheels of fate start to turn, there is no return, you just want to know what happens next and go to the next chapter

I cried. I feel like the author really improved on this aspect

This novel like other reviewers said has a touch of humanity, unlike Malicious Empress that impressed me because of many things including the ruthlessness represented in the... more>> novel, Star General represents some ideals worth fighting for.

The MC and ML are adorable, both spoiling each other

Our MC is like the sun, optimistic and going forward, she wants revenge and this is her ultimate goal but she's not obsessed with it. She is a strong woman

Our ML is the moon, he may seem cold and overbearing like other MLs but in fact, he is just lazy XD, towards our MC he is still quite childish

A really good novel <3 <<less

I read up to the currently translated chapter 59 (the Phoenix Walk translation is excellent), and roughly MTL'd the rest.

Miss He Yan was raised as her male cousin, attended an elite male academy, and attained great success on the battlefield as a masked General. But her male cousin took back his identity and took the credit for her military success. To protect this secret, she was married off, blinded, and mu*dered. Miss He Yan is then reborn into the body of a young girl in the city, the vain and... more>> pretty daughter of a lowly military gate-keeper. He Yan is a great FL, strong, calm, competent, practical, diligent, and very smart.
Spoiler

She protects her new family, and when she is forced into a tight corner, she rejoins the army in disguise as a man and collects military merits under her own name. Although her new body is weak, she has all the skills and knowledge of her previous life as a great General, and her diligent training helps her regain her physical prowess with every weapon. One of my favourite scenes is her sword fight with the ML.

The first third of the story involves the FL adapting and getting recognition for her military skills. The middle third involves the FL and ML going on adventures. The last third of the story has the couple return to the capital. There, the FL encounters her ex-classmates who are now powerful men, and with the ML's help, unravels the conspiracies against her, exposes the villains publicly, clears her previous name, reveals her exquisite swordsmanship and her gender, earns rewards, builds a glorious new life for herself and opens up avenues for other women to have careers. There is more emphasis on the imperial politics and succession, and some friends died in battle, but I was satisfied with her happy ending.
[collapse]

The ML is Xiao Jue, a formidable General she used to compete with.
Spoiler

They had previously met when she was her male cousin in school, and again when she was a blind madam. They have a lot of fate together. The ML realizes He Yan is a woman in chapter 100, and figures out the clues to solve her previous life's identity/secret/rebirth in chapters 191-216. When he realizes how much she lost in her previous life, he vows to help her regain it all in this life.

[collapse]

Supporting characters are well written and complex. FL's relationships with her ex-classmates and family in her previous life are examined and resolved. I really love this author. Her FLs always have a lot of self-respect, composure, and intelligence. Miss He Yan is more straightforward, carefree, valiant, and less domineering and scheming (except in battle) than her other FLs. She has no feminine arts and was raised in seclusion as a male, so she can be pretty "adorkable" (as another reviewer commented) at times too. This novel isn't a domineering revenge novel like Malicious Empress, more like a romantic fated romance. The FL had struggled and worked so hard on her own for so long, I didn't mind that the ML helped her later on, it was nice that she had someone on her side to support her. <<less

I'm actually still half way through this novel and I can say it's definitely a long one compared to her other novels. I feel like the 150 chapters that I'm reading now is equivalent to around 200 chapters of her usual. But I understand, it's actually necessary considering the plot of the story.

It's still the same reborn concept that the author usually takes on but this one I can say is a bit different in a way that the FL's past was a general. Which is a new character that... more>> the author has went with because usually it's more on the noble lady type of FLs. To keep it simple she's basically a mulan but a more mulan than mulan. Lol. Because unlike mulan who only pretended to be a man to enter the military, the FL here was raised to be a man.

Anyway, so far, there's actually not much progress in her revenge honestly. I feel like its only about 30 percent. Anyway, I'll just continue this review after finishing the whole novel. <<less

I howled when FL’s shifu fought dazzlingly until the end. His love was too tragic and full of angst yet he never blamed anyone. He quietly protected the place of his beloved until the end. Such ending was truly heartbreaking. Another was Yan He. I wished he could have a better end, but we could never have everything can we.

It was a nice read. Although I got bored a lot of times during the time I was reading and had to pause, it was still a good one.

It is still The Rebirth of the Malicious Empress of Military Lineage that is more of my type of novels, to be honest.

There was little character conflict and intrigue in this book, and it was more focused on military and war themes, which I think were written well, but they are not my type.

Other things I did not like:

    1. Wish MC told ML the whole truth early on. She had all their memories and experience as evidence. The reason she didn't is because of her inferiority.
    1. Still, I felt the ML was too suspicious, nonetheless. She sacrificed herself for their garrison multiple times. Regardless if she's hiding something, it's obvious she's not their enemy.
    1. ML fell for her too late - she had a sad life, growing up, no familial love, no friends, bullied at school, couldn't get close to anyone bcz of her special identity, while all the time, ML still had ppl by his side. And no matter what she went through, there is no one as kind and just as her. She really is very good in all aspects, not sure what took him so long...
    1. Even Liu buwang fell for that arrogant, spoiled, selfish and useless Mu Hongjin (I saw no good qualities in her, other than: she's not evil) in a month, yet ML took so long to fall for this amazing FL, it's really insulting.
    1. MC's mother - both readers, MC, the author seem to not realise the gravity of what she did. She stood by while her daughter was being killed. She protested against it, when her family discussed it and that's it. Still did nothing to try to stop it or warn MC at least. Yet at the end she managed to escape from the manor to appear before the emperor. For her to stand by while her daughter was killed, I don't know how is she not portrayed as a horrible mother.

But why did she lie? Even she couldn't come up with a reason that would be acceptable.

Xiao Jue bent down to pick up the broken sword on the ground. The long sword in his hand had been cut into two by He Yan's Drinking Autumn.

He Yan silently watched his movements. When he straightened up, she asked, "Do you know everything now?"

"More or less, " Xiao Jue's gaze was calm. "You are the deceased wife of Xu Zhiheng, and also the masked He Rufei."

The words "deceased wife" struck He Yan like a blow. It was as if the most unwilling-to-be-discovered secret had been exposed, revealing a hint of embarrassment. She, who had always faced thousands of troops on the battlefield without fear, now, at this moment, felt a sense of retreat when facing this person.

Not true. MC went through something just as bad, yet she is kind even to those cruel to her. The moment CZ realised his master didn't even care abt him, he could have started devising his downfall and could have helped MC and ML after he met them, switching over to the other side.

Holy flashbacks, Batman!

Seriously, this novel is chock-full of flashbacks to the previous lifetime. Almost every five to ten chapters in the first half has a flashback. Sometimes it was short, other times it was several chapters long. I get the exposition but it started distracting from the main story.

The MC of the story is He Yan, a woman who has been reborn into the body of a younger woman with the same name. She discovers she has a loving family, but chooses a path of revenge immediately. Circumstances happen that... more>> lead her to joining a military camp that was being run by a classmate from her former life and eventually reclaim her title as a General. Along the way, she exhibits extraordinary willpower and dedication to training, which allows her to surpass the men in the camp. To the point that she's almost a freakish Mary Sue. However, she is shown to be lacking in the social department (for example, missing a lot of social cues) and is almost completely incapable of the "womanly arts". She falls for the ML first for obvious reasons.

Spoiler

As the story progresses, we are shown a lot of flashbacks to her time as her brother. A lot of these flashbacks involve the ML as he was apparently helping her. He helped to teach her swordfighting, rescued her several times and even fed her when she didn't want to kill an animal during a hunting competition. Unfortuantely, she was EQ stunted, due to the constraints of her family, and never realized it was him who helped her all those times.

After she went back to her female identity, and was rendered blind by her brother, the ML was also the person who helped her choose to live. He saved her life when she tried to commit su*cide and then coaxed her by saying she could still be the best blind person around. Unfortunately, that led to her death in her first life but it was something the MC never forgot.

[collapse]

The ML is Xiao Jue, a young general who went to the same academy as the MC's first life. He had risen to gain a reputation as being cold-hearted and bloodthirsty but almost peerless as a General. In the MC's past life, he saw some of his younger self in the MC while she was masquerading as her brother. In the MC's second life, he initially believed her to be a spy before gradually coming to like her. While she fell first, he fell a lot harder. Even going a little nuclear when he figured out that she was the Phoenix General before her first life's mu*der.

Spoiler

The ML is responsible for the MC managing to succeed in the Academy (still at the bottom of their class) as he helped her improve her swordsmanship. He also helped her out in other ways throughout her time in the Academy and was even about to reveal himself as her hidden backer, but she had run away to join the army by that point.

He didn't fully interact with her again until she became Madame Xu, where he prevented her from committing su*cide.

Once he figures out that the MC was both the Phoenix General and Madame Xu, he realizes that he "missed" her twice. He also, nearly immediately, goes to her first life's brother and nearly kills him because he knew that it was the brother who had orchestrated everything.

[collapse]

The majority of this story is good, but there are a lot of anticlimactic plot points. The first example would be the young noble who was interested in the second He Yan (before the MC taking over her body), another would be the MC's relative who became a concubine, and even another would be the female doctor's ending. It always felt like it was leading up to more and then just kind of ends in a "that happened... anyway" kind of plot point. Not all things need to be interconnected, but these plot points only impact that brief moment and then they are done. No real consequences or even mentioning the characters after they were no longer important to the story.

Spoiler

The Young Noble was pretty terrible, he intended to force the second He Yan and do as he liked before he would kill her and send her body back to her family. During a scuffle, he gets accidentally stabbed with his own dagger and dies. This is then the point at which the MC flees the capital to join the military. There is mention that his family harassed the MC's second family and then their names were mentioned again as the ones who potentially tried to assassinate the MC towards the end of the second third of the book. After that, they were completely forgotten.

The relative who became a concubine of the MC's original husband gets mu*dered, and all of her servants are killed (except for one because plot has got to plot). The excuse used in the story was that she did something to displease the elder Madame and was let go like a normal servant. Yet this doesn't arouse any suspicion. Then there is the maiden family (which is of both the MC's original life and the concubine), who does nothing. While the plot could be considered valid as outsiders care little about the happenings in different families, this was the in-law family of the famous Phoenix General. You would think that even the poor people in the Capital would be discussing that gossip but it's all glossed over by the author.

The female doctor, on the other hand, was a bit weirdly handled. The author writes her as super intelligent and a kind woman who had followed the ML to the military camp because she was interested in him. Despite being around him for years, he never showed any interest other than giving her the rewards he received that were useless to him as a man (such as silk that was in "womanly" colors" and skin cream). His other actions make it clear that he's not interested, as he just leaves her behind repeatedly. Her IQ apparently drops below sentient level because she chooses to expose the gender of the MC in front of the Emperor. Never mind that this could potentially result in the deaths of her family, the death of the man who liked her and did the exposing for her, or the destruction of their entire household (at either the hands of the Emperor or that of the ML). After the revelation, she is confined to her family's home and never shows up again.

[collapse]

We're dropped into the story just at the end of the MC's first life and follow along as she grows. There are some pretty entertaining scenes when she is pretending to be a guy, but there are also some fairly unbelievable ones. Some of the actions of the MC should have roused more suspicion than they did. While the author does have the ML investigate the MC, it just felt a little strange that the ML would be completely okay with the MC being the way she is, despite there being no logical explanation for her knowledge.

Spoiler

Seriously. He learns she is a woman and is more hung up on that than the fact that there was no plausible explanation for her to be able to recite war manuals. Her father was just a guardsman in the capital, her brother wasn't even a student for most of their life, and she had been a spoiled girl.

But, story has got to story.

[collapse]

Her actions are also kind of unbelievable. For example, archery. In ten days, she went from being unable to draw a bow to being able to shoot it accurately. While her accuracy might be from her previous life, there is no way to build up her strength enough in ten days to reach that level of skill. Obviously, a suspension of disbelief is needed for a good portion of this story. Also, a realization that a lot of characters act s*upid in this is needed.

The ending of the main villain of her previous life was incredibly anticlimactic. I genuinely thought they were building up something more, but it just sort of ended in a 'oh that was easy' kind of way. The reasoning for her end in the previous life also turned out to be just as anticlimactic and bland. The writer just quickly glossed over all of it as if it wasn't all that important to the overarching story (despite the MC's revenge being the main driving force behind all of her actions).

Spoiler

The MC's first life's death was literally just because her brother felt like he was always living in her shadow. He convinced their family with the whole reasoning that she was the real Phoenix General, and there was the potential for it to be revealed so she had to die.

The super Minister who orchestrated everything in the capital didn't know her brother was fake. Nor did the Prince whom they were both associated with.

His identity as the fake General was revealed in front of all the ministers (and the envoys from an enemy kingdom) after he lost a duel against the MC. The story does reference collecting evidence, but it is literally the MC's first life's birth mother stepping forward, claiming that she was being poisoned and revealing everything that happened to the MC's first life.

It genuinely felt like the author wrote themselves into a corner for that.

[collapse]

After the antagonist's defeat, we're forced to go through a war arc. While it is relatively short, it's probably the most painful part of the story. Certain things happen, and then there is a significant miscommunication that is meant to be a twist but just feels tacked on.

Spoiler

At the first of the story, we're introduced to several of MC's new brothers-in-arms at the military camp. At the middle, we're introduced to her main rival from her previous life's days at the Academy. And then we see them all saying goodbye to their families as they go off to war (death flags aplenty).

It's not all that surprising that half of those characters die (even if it was pretty heartwrenching) but then we read that the MC went into battle before it jumps to someone else's PoV. Her fate is left hanging for several chapters and we are only told that the ML reads a letter that she was injured.

This continues on to the return of her army and she is not riding in with them. We're led to believe that she died (or something) as the ML does not see her at all during the procession. Only to find her standing against the wall and waiting for him instead of riding in with her troops.

[collapse]

Despite the atrocities of the war, it does result in a happy ending for the MC and ML. The side stories are fairly decent as well even though the final one was kind of depressing because of who the characters were.

Overall, I did like the story, but probably not a reread for me. <<less

It was enjoyable and stored as one of my favorites although there are flaws.

Spoiler

When FL was trying to impress the ml, as an ex general, didn't she realize how it would be too suspicious for a 15/16 year old to be so skilled?

[collapse]

I didn't realize until I finished this novel that it was written by the same author of the malicious empress, a good revenge story where the only flaw that comes to mind is the repetitions of how handsome the ML is and how she has the posure of an empress from her past life. This is more of a light read although the next day when, during a nap, I was awakened and disturbed by some details.
Spoiler

Of course, it is necessary to have some deaths during the war and I was prepare for the gang to be affected (the build up was there) but I didn't expect to be affected by Yan He and Chu Zilan's loyal maid's deaths. Chu Zilan deserves what he got by sacrificing that girl.

[collapse]

It is not the moon bit, though romantic or the fl, ML that stays with me but the side characters. I am glad the FL gets a he as she deserves it and she got a family that cares for her in the end. <<less

The story was better than the previous work I read by the author, at times it touched my heart, Yan He's part was really sad... and the other army members... however it was a happy ending for the main couple. All in all a good book!

Another amazing work from Qian Shan Cha Ke. It's was totally different from any of her previous work which I think it's really refreshing to read. Instead of sticking with the same plot with different characters. She was able to make a difference on this one although it's still about rebirth. I think it would be much interesting if she actually make the original MC to re live her life but making a decision to be herself instead of making the portagnist take on another girls body. But anyway it's... more>> still not satisfying. Writers always focus on women portagnist tho. And I hope she can make more story for women empowerment. It's good. Worthy of my time to read it. <<less
