Rebirth of the Thief Who Roamed The World

The world’s largest VRMMO, Conviction, was almost like a second world for humanity. It had integrated itself into the real world’s economy, with both corporations and individuals seeking their fortunes through the game.

In this game, Nie Yan prided himself on his Level 180 Thief. He could barely be considered among the top experts in the game. Though, that was the only thing he could take pride in. He was penniless and unable to advance in life; a situation he was forced into by the enemy of his father. If it weren’t for the little money he made by selling off items in Conviction, he would’ve barely been able to eat. In the end, he chose to settle his matters once and for all. He assassinated his father’s enemy. He lay dying shortly after being shot in the pursuit.

However, that wasn’t the end of his story. Instead, he awoke moments later to find that he had reincarnated into his past self. Armed with his experience and knowledge of future events, he sets out to live his life anew.

I really like this currently, but if a few wrong steps are taken it could turn out bad. It’s balancing on a tightrope right now... I’m a bit worried it’ll turn into a zhan long or some really flat repetitive thing... fingers crossed. ^-^

The high praise on this novel is undeserving. Really didn’t find this read all that enjoyable, with the only things piquing my interesting being the IRL moments (which were much too few). The gaming aspect was an absolute mess and I hardly found myself ever excited for what’s to come. So many plot holes and too many times the author going brain dead that he forgets what he previously wrote. One other thing, the “Overpowered Protagonist” tag is greatly misplaced. Other characters (enemies to be exact) always had means to... more>> place him at a disadvantage or magically have something that countered something he has that’s considered OP. I swear the MC never had an easy time and always seemed to be on the backend of things, struggling, only to come out on top with the help of the bs plot armor. Reiterated many times about his 10 years of future experience, but the MC is just simply too s*upid to put it to use half the time and places himself in bad situations due to his arrogance and not being cautious enough. This was a frustrating read more than anything else, and I regret wasting my time with it. Would’ve long dropped it if I didn’t have the habit of reading things through to the end. <<less

Just when I though I found a good novel... *poof* ffing author pulls some bullshit.

Spoiler

Our arrogant MC has legendary equipment a hell lot of stats because of some thing called chapters of a book or something, 10 years+ experience and all other sort of bs... but cannot even defeat a player without resorting to some kind of loophole or other way like luring a boss and troubling the pvp player... constantly annoying characters keep popping up. At the start of the book the MC acts a little smart but NO then slowly he becomes a dumbass throughout the story... MC plot armor is also super strong so that when he encounters some sort of strong boss magically some players or npc are there to help him. some may call it coincidence But I call it BS! Only the translation is good other than that I find nothing good about this.

Pretty good novel. The novel got a good start and is pretty good all along. There are some problem which are the fact that after the middle of the novel start to lack the precision and the deepness of the world we find in the beginning and as Mad Snail novel the ending is pretty rush but it is still quite good.

Well the novel is quite good from the beginning to the end but lack the sharpness we can find at the start.

Let's take out some points that is present with reincarnation/time-travel-themed stories such as power levels and knowledge. This story makes my head hurt quite a bit but maybe I'm just expecting a much more developed character. The protagonist has gone back in time to 10 years prior and has a very messy and dark childhood and life it seems. Usually a person matures a lot when people very close to them dies and the author likes to point that out very occasionally but then outside of those times reminding the... more>> reader the protagonist is more mature than he looks, every other action the protagonist does indicates he is anything but mature.

The protagonist's way to handle things are: You were a good friend in my past life so I'll be nice. Everyone else can just go die.

On his first party raid, there was a somewhat detestable person, just arrogant. The protagonist way of handling someone 'younger' than him is setting him up with inconviences and berating him stating it is all his arrogant attitude that is causing himself trouble, has nothing to do with the protagonist. How very 'mature' ain't it? "Do you know that you're a s*upid person? You're very s*upid, s*upid."

It makes no sense how the 's*upid' person is friends with very nice girl for 10 years with such an attitude. Furthermore said girl doesn't seem capable of curbing that other person. Friends for 10 years? How? Clearly the girl finds his attitude annoying so how friends for ten years? I can't.

Further down the road, he gets aggro of a monster he can't handle alone and so happens there is a group of players grinding. I get the survival part where you lead a troublesome thing to someone else but then he had the gall to straight up attempt to kill those players for some loot that he probably doesn't need outside of the sake of earning a bit of money in which he already has money schemes going on. Then he gets mad at them for retaliating against his ambush! Not only did he lure a mid-boss to them and tries to kill them while the group is fighting his problem, he blames them for trying to kill him.

I honestly have no idea how MMORPGs function in China but the protagonist is cleaning up the entire market of two materials that is currently useless but becomes invaluable in the future. Pretty sure that isn't suspicious to the developers.

He was previously Lv180 but he's only at Lv5 now and apparently is finding very gamebreaking equipment including a legendary item that basically turns him into god for a short while offset by a huge cool down. The author spends so much time to make the protagonist strong that he fails to do anything else. We're literally given a new character almost every 5 chapters and aside from the short introduction, they are left in the dust afterwards making a reappearance every now and then but contribute nothing nor gain anything to the reader's aspect. Should we care about these new characters? I sure as well have forgotten most of their names by now. Literally a few chapters ago introduced someone titled Alchemy God who can make the protagonist a lot of money and I already forgotten his name.

The whole thing is that he needs to establish a good base for himself quickly so he can help his parents live a good life but his actions are literally almost the exact same as the people who destroyed his life; Ruthless, selfish, and arrogant.

Author is trying to make his game world realistic but I don't think there is a single animal out there that will try to attack a person clearly out of reach for over who knows how much time. Protagonist suspends himself 20m off the ground and shoots crossbow bolts at a lion who can only jump about 5m high. If that's a game aspect, then the developers are very s*upid; in this case, the author. <<less

The novel is actually quite good, especially for a mmorpg novel. And surprisingly the MC actually make use of his previous knowledge quite effectively.

The thing though is that this time he's trying to make his own guild so he can't just power level all the time, and at the same time he also has to learn some new things so his future knowledge from his 'rebirth' doesn't solve all this problems either.

Some of the minor issues with the novel however is how like most revive into the past & second... more>> chance novels the MC is OP and has a lot of future knowledge, but mostly only when it's convenient. Seemingly ideas that the Author come up with on the spot are supposed to have been known by the MC from the very beginning.

This means that at times things just don't add up, if you knew of this genius way to ab*se the terrain and grind this spot, why wait til now to do it? Of course remembering everything perfectly is impossible, so it's natural that at times Nie Yan (the MC) will be reminded of things, but in my opinion, often times the objectives or current goals are simply too spontaneous and too little foreshadowing or planning. He'll remember something and then get said thing within the same chapter or so.

It's a bit of a contradiction since Nie Yan picks the same faction & class as his 'past' life because he is more knowledgeable and familiar, the more he would have changed the less of an advantage to leverage he would have, so it makes perfect sense. But despite that he doesn't really come up with any long term plans on how to achieve his goals.

He just suddenly remember things "Oh right, these items will be in high demand after the update in 2 days, I will buy them all up and resell for a profit."

So to recap: One thing I really think is well done with this novel is how unlike most other of these novels Nie Yan doesn't randomly change his race, class, or faction to throw away his strongest advantage.

And actually, the game is somewhat believable. Like if this was an actual game people could actually play it, you can't really say that about other novels. Those authors clearly doesn't know an iota about how a game can function.

Of course the EXP and insane grinding + the incredulous EXP penalties from dying (1 level default, then progressively more if you have killed other players, the more of them you kill the higher the penalty, there's even examples of losing like 5 levels in one go even though it take thousands upon thousands of monster kills on your own level to level up. And dying during a Guild War has an automatic -5 levels.)

But it's a little more believable (but still not very much) when you take into consideration that in the setting people have something like 16 to 20 hours of free time, even when going to school, and going to classes isn't mandatory. (There's probably less time if you have a job, but of course you make money by playing the game as well.)

And they're playing while being asleep, without any other rest required, so basically the only reason players don't play the game for 24 hours is because the game server is only online for 16 hours of each day. <<less

***Update***:

Been a few months now, and the novel has a decent amount of chapters. So this is a more in depth overall opinion on this novel. It is still a good read and something that I come back to but at the same time, compare to others, I don't keep track of it as much anymore. My reasoning falls along the same line as most of the other low rating reviews, so I won't say much into it but if you want a general idea just look at Potatos review... more>> because his reason for why the novel kill it for him is basically the same for me. Especially the lack of interest in the real world outside of the game, even though it seem to play a major role in the novel especially at the beginning (was hoping to see more side stories into it).

Spoiler

***Old Review***:

found this today and by the time I was done, I caught up to the latest chapter. Think TDG meets VRMMO then thats basically what this novel is. Still have some work to be done when it comes to the author's idea of VRMMO immersion and the often cliches but overall still worth a read

5/5 perfection!

I read this 2 times as a whole, and occasionally come back for some parts to reread. It's definitely worth your time.

It's interesting and entertaining NGL. It's not boring and has a unique charm. I'm not a professional reviewer thus I can't explain properly. But it's worth reading.

I dont want to write much, english is not my native language and I cant review the translation, it was readable to me.

I just finished the last chapter and for a mmorpg lover like me, game world and rules dont make sense, real world full of loopholes, everything "fortunately" happens to save MC, very low drop rate items like 1:10.000, drops easyly to our MC and his friends.

MC hardly works or train but stronger than anyone and with just playing game he is learning fast, getting stronger but his enemies... more>> bunch of s*upid rich kids, the world building like they are clearly more developed than current technology but nobody cares intellectual people, they respect noting but muscle narrow-minded jerks and I found it s*upid like that over-developed world.

we are not living in jungle and "winner king, loser bandit" dont valid in our developed world. <<less

This story is enjoyable... if you turn off your brain, tilt your head 2cm to the right and blink three times per second. No, really, it is.

Pros: Pretty funny that it drew lots of chuckles from me. Also seeing the MC be creative, make friends, become rich and powerful was considerably enjoyable.

Cons: Where do I start? Man, the plot holes made this pretty unbearable. Also, the protagonist is so overpowered that even though the author tried to made it seem like there are challenges for him to overcome, it seemed... more>> awfully trivial. Everything goes to how the MC wants in the end. The lack of suspense and how bad the build up of some conflict (that was supposed to be fun to read) made it disappointing because we know the MC was going to win everything anyway, even when it doesn't really seem like he will or that's how the author tries to portray it anyway.

Some examples (which might be nitpicky but oh well) :

  • How everything bends to MC's favor (minor spoilers: his in-game luck, how the girl he loves is the same as the one he's close to in-game, how easily he made money, no relevant setbacks, etc.)
  • MC's physical fitness and superiority over people who trained since childhood (how many weeks did he train? days?) and how he could persist to exercise, study, game without a break and mention of food or daily everyday stuff like chores
  • Minor spoilers: Sleepy Fox would not be so impatient that he will skip over crafting materials from a dragon field boss. And the other guild leader wouldn't give it up so easily either wth.
  • Admins are never mentioned except once and with MC grabbing legendary stuff all over the place, it's just unbelievable how they're not wondering how he knew about the locations, etc.
  • The money stuff in general is so convoluted that my brain just shut off so it could continue reading and somewhat enjoy the story
  • Most stuff (minor spoilers: seemingly no cooldowns on his thief skills, 100, 000 vs 25 with 25 winning, infinite number of bolts, oblivious supporting characters and so many more) this story mentioned is honestly so confusing and obviously exists just for the MC to climb over them, it's just... not worth to think about them
tl;dr It's obviously a wish-fulfillment story and in a way that constantly shoves it in your face. While occasionally enjoyable, still needs a lot of work to be not so stale. <<less

Good things:

This could be a good read if you are just interested in the game elements of the game he plays.

... more>> As a players of MMORPG myself, I think the world is well built, the classes as well.

I'm not so sure about the background of the author, but I would like to at least give him some recognition for the game world story. It really flows well and was really thought through, there are so many terrible novels out there who just completely ignores this element. The many envirorments and monsters have a good description and therefore vivid to the reader.

Bad things:

My God, the evil head of this demon more well know as reincarnation shows it's ugliness once again. If you're going to go reincarnated route, with a supposedly thirty something years old guy, why do they always end up acting like a nineteen young adult?

The author tries to convey how mature the MC is, but failed to deliver every time.

I can think of three moments at the top of my head, The deal with his father, his inability to interact with his enemies in the game and real life, his love interest.

Spoiler

My God! The deal with his father, he's supposed to be a mature adult, but revealed all his secrets and assets to him in one chapter. S*upid move. He is having so much trouble acquiring gold in the game, and what does he do? Let's support my father guild with hundreds of thousand of gold, for no good reason. My God, s*upidest decision ever made.

[collapse]

Legendary Equipments and items being introduced too early.

The monetary system inside the game is already meaningless at the 400 chapter mark.

I was going to comment how there was nothing to break the balance in the game so far, but

Spoiler

He motherf*cking killed a legendary NPC in the early chapter 400, 4 to 5 times his level. And only got 3 levels of experience,

[collapse]

I was going to give this a worse review, but I think 3.0 is fair, it's not so bad if you can ignore the sins I've cited. <<less

So the skill in the game mechanics and superior game knowledge aside, since it does make complete sense as he has his memories of 10 years playing. The sheer amount of s*upidity on simple logic everyone else in this story has, even his friends and party members, is the most ridiculous thing i've ever read. The MC is apparently a god at talking and manipulating people, and everyone else on earth has the brain of a monkey, that's how I feel reading this.

This book is like ATG (Against the Gods), in a way. It's tr*sh, you know it's tr*sh in every conceivable way, but for some godforsaken reason you still enjoy it. I'm up to date with ATG, and I probably will be with this one too.

Somehow, everything manages to go to shit, but you will still read it. Not because it's good, but because there's something about it that makes you keep going. That's how I ended up 450+ chapters in, and you probably will as well.

Oh boy.. this novel.. what a mess, I don't know if its just me, but this novel just feel like an exact copy of Reincarnation of the Strongest Sword God, and have almost all the same issues, with some very few small fixes, but not enough to make it special or anything really.

I think those Chinese Authors insists in adding massive money making machine in games, turning them into a massive investment to play.. in order to make the game have a real impact on the real life, otherwise.. it... more>> would be only a group of nerds playing a regular MMO, and taking things waaaaaaaaaaaaaay too seriously for a mentally healthy human being, seriously.. things in this novel just like any chinese novel/manga/anime escalate from 0 to 100 in seconds.

First off, I love gaming systems, Solo Leveling and Second Time Ranker are amazing manhwa adaptations of decent novels, with their own uniqueness, but.. I am sorry I can't understand how the world DEvolve to the point where working as an alchemist on a game can earn you more than being the president o a company.. that's just... ugh...

Its Wish fulfillment, 100% no doubt, there's nothing here that isn't wish fulfillment, the guy its your average looking dude without anything special other than knowing what will happen on the next 10 years, and he uses it to get the strongest guild, the pretties girl, the most loyal followers, the richest company... its just.. too much, he never loses anything, and the very.. VERY.. rare times he dies in game, he dies in a way that.. no one else would ever know, and the system makes him respawn just by his corpse because he carries all the legendary items that is 100% drop upon death, so he can't just lose that progression right? that would be against the wish fulfillment.

One decent point of this novel over the other one I said, the Strongest Sword God, is that in this novel we are given a clear goal for the protagonist from the beginning, This rich guy ruined his family, and now that he is back in time, he will not let it happen again, and will ruin that guy. Great, we have a goal... now the novel only needs.... everything else...

The World is basically Black and White, everyone that follows and befriends the protagonist is 100% good and loyal, hard working and dedicated, and everyone that follows his rivals are evil and corrupted.

The Author is not good, he often forget skills that the MC has that could save his ass many times, and turn harsh battles into a one-sided slaughter, not only that, the Author has this thing where he gives the MC all these legendary unique top tier equipment, skills and class that only he has, that makes him unrivalled, and.. when the MC goes to fight like.. 30~60 enemy players he just.. is forced to run for his life... that would actualy make sense.. IF... the MC killing 1 thousand players by himself wasn't a thing, but he actually does that.. a lot.. but despite all his legendary unique stuff that puts him so high on the power rank that no one can touch him.. to make every battle "exciting" instead of a pure one-sided slaughter, the Author "nerf" him, be it by making him take s*upid decisions, like VERY s*upid DECISIONS, or by simply forgetting all those powerful skills and passives that he have.

Anyway, its not in me to make anyone read or not, its good? no, can be entertaining? until certain point the story is not THAT bad, but when it start going downhill, it never rises again, its a one way road down, so be warned when reading and start feeling bored, to not be optimistic thinking that it will get better later, because it wont!

2/10, characters, world-building, development, system everything, I'm only giving 2 stars because its a MMORPG novel, and thats it, 2 stars for the theme, and that's more than this novel deserves. <<less

I really wanted to like this novel. I love the rebirth trope, I love the VRMMO/gaming trope, and I love how the premise was kind of like the King's Avatar. In many parts, I did get what I wanted, and that was why I stuck with it for so long, along with the excellent translations. The game itself is really interesting, and I'm a fan of the thief (assassin?) class. Sometimes the MC gets really OP and lucky and face slaps people, which I'm always a fan of. Plus his... more>> personality is pretty stable and grounded, unlike some overly arrogant/cowardly MCs in other novels.

But the romance is unsatisfying to say the least, he's literally obsessed with this girl but fails to put two and two together to figure out that the girls outside and inside the game are the same, and there's a bunch of unnecessary drama on both sides to figure it out. Apparently sm*x scenes are censored by Qidian (but translated by translator thank you) but are literally like three sentences of barely PG13 realness. MC is constantly repeated to have a very boring and normal appearance for no reason, literally almost every massive enemy is against MC for FL, which just boggles my mind. I love the side characters but why does the author have to make them so weak when the MC isn't there? You would think that each of them as one of the absolute top OP elites in the previous life would be able to stand their own. I understand that there is a lot to keep track of, but author keeps forgetting/mixing up/retconning stats and properties—like I would think restrictions and cool downs and immunities would be pretty important things that could greatly affect strategy. Also author needs to stop pulling out random OP characters out of nowhere just to press MC down, with all of the MC's purposeful questing, you would think that no one would be able to out-OP him/his stats. Lots of features conveniently forgotten, often to make the MC weaker, MC is top thief with extremely high awareness but manages to get ambushed all over the place by like hundreds to thousands of players. I'll probably keep reading as the novel gets translated but for now, paused. <<less

It's a pretty good novel, in its specific genre (time travel+VRMMO) it's the best I've read. Nie Yan, the MC, is OP due to his reincarnation, but isn't like most other MCs of the genre. He pays a lot of attention to his guild, he expects (at first) to be surpassed at some point by people with more talent and revenge is low on his list of priorities. He's nice to strangers, loyal to his old friends and allies, and while ruthless to his enemies, he's not obsessed with destroying... more>> them. Generally, he's more of a businessman than a warrior in his train of thought, with in-game power being a means to an end rather than the goal itself.

However, nothing is perfect. Nie Yan regularly benefits from random awesome events that he didn't know about before, the (sort-of) instant power upgrades are obvious (especially in the latest chapters), and events are sometimes unrealistic. Personally I'm annoyed by the sudden XXX scenes that turn up in later chapters as well, but they can be skipped without problem. The 'look how kickass this MC is' is generally done in a non-annoying way, but at times the author falls into the pitfall of overdoing it.

In conclusion, this novel has its flaws, but it avoids most of the pitfalls of the time-travel and OP hero genres. Definitely worth reading if you like VRMMO novels. <<less

I wonder why the star is low on this one, I get it, its too fantasy with all the sh*t of second chance. But thats it its a second chance of course the MC is gonna get op with all the knowledge he has, but that's not what s good about this novel. Its the way he does things that's whats's interesting. Plus the satisfaction on what he does is what's great. Read it guys until the later chap. Its not like what other second chance mmorpg novel is.

Best VRRMO based novel period ✌?

The storyline is superb.... You learn a lot about business development in an interesting context.... You have all elements of a great novel...?

The only downside is the lack of depth of female characters... Still the pace of the story covers for all deficiency ?

I give this novel a staggering 4.7/5... a superb read ???

I wait a lot for every release of chapter
