Rebirth of the Thief Who Roamed The World

The world’s largest VRMMO, Conviction, was almost like a second world for humanity. It had integrated itself into the real world’s economy, with both corporations and individuals seeking their fortunes through the game.

In this game, Nie Yan prided himself on his Level 180 Thief. He could barely be considered among the top experts in the game. Though, that was the only thing he could take pride in. He was penniless and unable to advance in life; a situation he was forced into by the enemy of his father. If it weren’t for the little money he made by selling off items in Conviction, he would’ve barely been able to eat. In the end, he chose to settle his matters once and for all. He assassinated his father’s enemy. He lay dying shortly after being shot in the pursuit.

However, that wasn’t the end of his story. Instead, he awoke moments later to find that he had reincarnated into his past self. Armed with his experience and knowledge of future events, he sets out to live his life anew.

I've read a lot of vrmmorpg stories and this one is not only decent, it doesn't completely fall apart halfway through the way many Chinese novels tend to, though I was less then pleased at the change of focus. I really enjoyed the adventures, quests, and leveling way more than all the guild wars and politics, probably because it's the same guild/ political crap seen in every Chinese VR novel (I've never read one where the MC isn't focused on world domination...I guess it's a Chinese obsession).

the romance is kind... more>> of flat but I'm not reading it for romance; I'm reading it to see the MC use his knowledge of the game to kick ass and take names. He's not as OP as a harem MC would be, (i.e. Shura's Wrath, Evil Dragon, Zan Long), but he's still OP, just like all the other MC's in these Chinese webnovels. and he actually dies more than once in the game, which is something rarely ever seen, and there were major level drops. though he isn't nearly as traumatized as Weed is over his lost armor, he still has to work hard to catch up and pull ahead.

i also like that he picked the same class instead of somehow magically knowing everything about a different class he's never played. it's a little hard to suspend my disbelief when I read stories where someone spent 10 years growing their character (sorceress, druid, etc) and then they pick something else (hunter, thief, etc) and are super proficient and op from the get-go with no adjustment period.

i admit I have a bit of a soft spot for this novel; it was the first Chinese vrmmorpg novel where I actually liked the MC most of the time (except for the scenes with his GF, when he treated her as his possession just like all the other Chinese MC.). Honestly, I would have like the story better if he didn't "get" the girl until the end and we weren't put through all those 'wife-training' scenes. <<less

Looking at the top reviews, there are a lot of low ratings. Imma guess its due to the low chpts read.

It generally starts as a typical "go back to fix your mistakes and know a bunch of unknown things". Its kinda generic, although I still enjoyed it a lot, but most of it was from 3-4/5. It goes on and incorporates more elements in.

One of the best parts of this novel is the vast variety of things that happens: solo thrilling action, ancient lore (that I skim through), politics/deplomacy, company/guild... more>> management, utterly ass-kicking (if u know the referance), family and lovers love and friendships.

Story: One of the best things that I like is that the MC is super OP BUT he isnt actually that much since thats only when comparing it to a single person. Instead there are major corporations that have hundreds of thousands of players and money. The MC has to slowly overcome this.

Characters: Probably the worst part. The characters dont really have too much personality, even the MC is pretty so-so. While others have weak/generic or no-existant personalities, except for a select few.

Translation: 10/10. <<less

Overall: 3.5

The story had a 4.0 until somewhere in the 200s. At which point the gaming system becomes ridiculous, and this is ignoring the leveling system and inconsistent experience requirements that these types of novels have (relatively speaking, this one isn't that bad in that aspect). So the story explains, multiple times, that the MC in his previous life never made it past lvl 180, because he didn't have the understanding required to step over the 'line'. Past that 'line' are the true elites, only a few 10s of them per each class in the entire game. The elite title of the MC's class (thief, in case you didn't read the title) is "Shadow Dancer". It is explained that that title is for those that step over the 'line' and complete the quest to advance, allowing them to acquire the title "Shadow Dancer" and go past lvl 180.
Spoiler

Well, around ch200 the MC faces off against a lot of enemies, 1 v many, and makes the (completely arrogant) throat slitting motion towards the enemy commander when, as far as has been explained, he has no way to actually kill the commander. So what does the MC do? He charges into thousands of players, in formation, and proceeds to dodge any and all attacks, skills, and spells from the tanks, fighters, thieves, mages, and priests to run right up the the enemy commander and kill him in front of everyone.

How did he do this? Glad you asked.
The explanation we are given is that he understood the essence of a "Shadow Dancer", therefore becoming able to perform "Shadow Dancer" skills. Which, as previously stated, a completion of a very high lvl class quest to obtain that title.
I could have ignored that if he didn't use those skills constantly to do whatever the hell nonsense he feels like from that point on.
[collapse]

Another big issue is that, after the previously stated event, the elites became able to do whatever they wanted from that point on.

Spoiler
    1. There was one point where exactly 25 elites held a choke point against tens of thousands of players. (Disregarding that the choke point is the only entrance to a place that tens of thousands of players and multiple guilds just had a boss fight. Where the first guild to enter could have just blocked that point and taken the boss for themselves.) The 25 elites stopping thousands of players is absurd. (The elites had at most 15 levels over the regular players)
    1. The MC is careless at one point and gets trapped. (Almost certainly going to die) Then his 20 man elite squad charges into the back of the enemy formation when the MC is just a few hits from death and saves him. Why did the enemies completely stop attacking the MC during this time? No idea. How can a 20 man squad charge though 3000 players, elites included, and come out nearly unscathed? Apparently "Advanced Magic" can do the trick, even though an earlier form of it only had a radius of 30m.
[collapse]

The next issue is one with all VR novels, except LMS, and that is the explanation of why is rl money being invest into the game. I'm tired of writing at this point, so I'll just say that the RL isn't that bad. It has some less than good points, like the MC's single love interest being really naive. I will give the MC

that he doesn't get swayed by pretty faces and stays true to what he wants. The MC's business sense, outside of his previous life first-hand experience, is pretty bad. Not a bad story and a great time-killer overall. As far as VR novels go, I would recommend LMS over this, though LMS is pretty great up to volume 40 (haven't past that yet).

Honestly, this is one of the most amusing and interesting LN I have ever read, and mind you, I have read quite a few.

MC is immensely dedicated and loyal to family and friends. Cunning, yet at the same time still has a lot of morals. He is one of the least trigger prone MC I have yet to read. Sure he gets pissed off and fights back, but only when things get bad. Some MCs are so trigger prone they will beat the sh*t out of you just by giving... more>> a few smart remarks. He is also very loyal to his comrades and takes good care of them really well. Frankly, it gives the same vibe as TDG which used to be my favorite save for the fact that the plot got to the point where it had nowhere to go which is probably the reason why it's almost dropped at this point.

Sure, MC has thick plot armor, but what do you expect? He has memories of the past and is preparing for a war so of course he's going to get as many godly arsenal and friends as he can. Plot armor isn't nearly as thick as other xianxia novels IMO.

Romance wise, I think it's okay. The romance isn't as pronounced at this point in time. Sure, it was explained well at the first 150chapters, but the recent chapters is focused mainly on the development of the game. Another reason is...

Spoiler

also, the fact that he doesn't know what his love interest's ign. The storyline now is based mostly on the virtual world rather than the real world, hence, not much romance action going on

[collapse]

Having said that, I like the fact that MC is extremely loyal to his love interest.

I also like that the first few chapters instantly hooks you and leaves you wanting for more, unlike some slow paced novels, which I don't mind honestly, but sometimes, you want to be hooked instantly, which what this novel did for me. I feel like it's getting even more interesting because the history is slowly changing which is pretty much understandable, if you change something from the past, of course something is bound to change in the present and future. The future is getting unpredictable now which I think is a great way to spice up the story.

The only reason why I gave it a 4 instead of 5 is because the storyline is still only at a third of the whole story. Idk if things will go good or bad from there. And also, it doesn't release as fast as I would want it to, although it does release pretty often. Idk if I should just stop for now and come back after a few hundred chapters.

If you still have doubts, just try reading it and you'll know. Frankly, this was so good to me it made me lose interest to every other novel. Every thing just pales in comparison and it irritates me now how redundant and petty other novels and MC are. <<less

Yeah, this story really has the wish fulfillment cranked up to an 11. I honestly can't think of anything good to say about this, everything is just mediocre. Something I really hated is how much of an ass the main character is but the story never addresses it. Another thing that bothered me is that the main character's personality is weird, the different aspects of him don't fit right and it's unsettling. That's pretty much it, it's mediocre to the point it can't really get much of a reaction in... more>> either direction from me. I suppose the silver lining is it's not terrible, so I guess in can serve as a time waster if need be, honestly if I wasn't taking a long flight yesterday and had no time to search for something better I wouldn't have made it to chapter 76.

If you want to read a story with a similar premise but executed better then I suggest Reign of the hunters. It has the same return to the past, the same taking advantage of glitches and future events and the two main characters act similar to one another, but, Reign of the hunters is better in every way, with the exception of the fights, which i'll give props to rebirth for doing well in. The main characters are treated very differently right from the get go in that rebirth's main is a victim of conspiring circumstance in his previous life while hunter's main suffers purely from her own actions in her previous life. Rebirths MC is already a complete character who'll likely have very little change as his personality is already set and since the wish fulfillment is so high he'll likely get everything he wants, Hunter's MC on the other hand, is trying to fix her own jacked up personality and is in a constant struggle with herself and with the reality that, even after reincarnating, she can;t always change the results. <<less

I dont like the MMORPG type novels, I was expected to enjoy MLS but I dropped it. But this novel is a pleasant surprise. Of course I expected a lot from the legendary mad snail (I still hate him for dropping one of my all time fav novel - TDG, but I guess he must have his reasons) but the novel is fun to read. Not a masterpiece, but read if you need a book.

It's a fun read. Wish it was a little less wuxia, but no helping it I guess. More than anything, I'm just glad that there's another VRMMORPG novel being consistently and speedily translated besides Zhan Long. Cheers for picking this up WuxiaWorld/LittleShanks. As for recommendations to readers who like this: try the Hunter novel on GravityTales (all about the female Huntress game character), Emperor of Solo Play (different from this, but still a good game novel), and King's Avatar. King's Avatar is kinda the standard for all game novels in... more>> my opinion because it's the only one that really feels like gaming. <<less

This novel is truly refreshing because it really give you the feeling of a true immersion in a VR Game. The MC wins his fight but because he knows how to play and to avoid issues not because he is too strong. He is building his progress step by step and in logical way Beautiful really beautiful

I just picked up this novel and find the pacing to be good with a likable MC. Sure, he's a bit OP, but I find that it's a nice feel-good addition to the mix of the many novels I'm currently following.

Even though there are many stories with similar plotlines, and even more similarities in tropes, there are still readers who enjoy reading them. This is one such story. You can identify the tropes, you may be able to foresee the story, but in the end, it's a literary adventure to go. The quality of the translation is high, and I'm looking forward to how this develops in the next couple of hundred chapters

So because it stop being translated I started reading it translated by systranet (grammar was horrible) and figured out mistranlated words meanings and...I read it all. It was fairly good once you look away from the grammar. Nie Yan went through different things to change the his future which was fun reading except the ending which for some reason he made another after, kinda more like a small short story of Nie Yan and the girl he loves. Anywho to any that is like me to read a promising story... more>> that is stop translating, give this story a whirl. <<less

First of all, I'm pretty sure most of these 5 star reviews are fake and the few real ones come from people who read less than 30 chapters. This is 2 stars AT BEST.

Plot had a lot of potential, but very quickly you realize you've fallen into a trap. Story becomes so dull you start skimming through chapters, because every fight is exactly identical, every arc is literally the same thing. The lore of the game seemed a little interesting at first but you quickly realize it doesn't matter. In... more>> fact half of what is explained or mentioned doesn't matter because the author forgets about it anyways. Expect random retcons that make no sense out of nowhere, along with random absurd nerfs. MC is a hypocrite and an idiot. His defining features are underestimating his opponents, getting ambushed because he just "never expected it", and his opponents always managing to get away. Not joking when I say at multiple times throughout the story, you'll WANT him to die. He deserves to. Unfortunately the plot armor is ridiculous and he manages to survive constantly through BS logic. It's also spectacular how the author makes him seem as not a very lucky person, when pulls outrageous items out of his pooper. Super rare forbidden items? Drop from random mobs. Omg it only has a 1 in a billion drop rate, well you can bet it dropped. Just completed a quest? Rewarded with an OP item that is outrageous for the quest level. All the characters are 1-dimensional, so expect zero character development and bland personalities. Also expect the author to try shoving some weird hypocritical logic and sense of justice down your throat, and see how the entire cast of characters literally praise his every action nonstop, because apparently no one has anything better to talk about besides the MC. "Oh my gosh that high level NPC had a look of respect when he saw the MC, no one's EVER been able to do that before omgiloveu."

TLDR;

Don't start this novel, you'll wish you hadn't. There's much better ones out there in the same genre like The Legendary Mechanic (highly recommend) or even The Legendary Moonlight Sculptor. <<less

This novel just made me quit in rage because of how s*upid the MC is, the author wants to make him look smart but how can he do that when the writer is probably s*upid.

The guy regressed back in time, he has 10 years of experience and memory of his previous life but he is still s*upid even though the author thinks he is smart. At the start you will see a lot of good points in this novel but as the chapters go you see the MC make the... more>> same mistake over and over and in the end getting saved by plot armor or his angel. He keeps getting ambushed cause he thinks he is unbeatable, which he should be with so much advantage, but he does not cause he can't use that advantage. He says he has to be careful next time but he never is. He keeps getting pincered and plotted against because he thinks he is so smart. He always has a very foreboding feeling that something bad is going to happen but he never acts on that feeling, if it is like that, don't mention it at all, why even bother? The math doesn't make sense, the guy could be way ahead of everyone because apparently, he knows so many ways to be ahead but he never is for more than 10 chapters. This novel is so inconsistent and so messed up that it will frustrate you to no end. I had high hopes for this novel but in chapter 864 I had enough of how s*upid he is and how can he get saved by plot armor every time.

I give it 2 stars because I like the start. But it is worth 1 star.

Don't waste time reading the start because from the middle to the end the novel is just pure frustration.

This novel could easily be one of the best if it was just a fast-paced novel with 300 chapters max. The guy has too many advantages to drag it for so long. I mean when you have all the knowledge how can you not just win. <<less

It is one of the first web novels that I read and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I read it when it was still being translated and I really loved the VRMMO aspect of the game. The ending was rushed as many reviewers mentioned before. It felt like the author was rushing to complete this so that he can focus on his next work. Overall the story was not fresh but the execution was excellent. The MC is likable and there is good character development throughout the story. The side characters... more>> are also pretty well fleshed out and not there just for show. 'ASSKICKERS UNITED' was an awesome clan with an awesome name. The items, quests, missions, and the way the MC handles them are pretty innovative and fun to read. Even the action scenes are good. Overall a very fun read to me even though the ending was a bit rushed and lackluster. <<less

SIGH... this is definitely making it into my fav books. The world building carried me all the way from beginning to end. At the last chapter, I didn't feel the usual emptiness in my heart I usually have when I get to the end of a great story and I'm reluctant to part with it. Strangely, I felt satisfied. It wasn't the most perfect ending ever but I was very happy.

Yes, despite the author mixing up small details as the story progressed and some annoying situations (family background and power-ups)... more>> and some cliche eighth-grade syndrome moments and a few abandoned plot lines, I still loved it.

The story wasn't all about questing and fight monsters in VR. There were moments of business, moneymaking, leadership sprinkled in. At times, the MC was strategizing against enemies and it was fun to watch them fall into his prearranged traps. But at the same time, his opponents could think for themselves and counter him.

By the way, the protagonist-praising here is as high as a mountain. But the author in later chapters found better ways to do it so the MC did not come off as a narcissistic show-off idiot. So there is definitely development as the story goes.

The romance...sigh... well, the love interest, herself, isn't annoying. So it was enjoyable when the author wasn't trying too hard to be mysterious.

As for the good sides? It's such a great read that all the bad points don't matter. It is a great soothing medicine for my heart especially after waiting for Reincarnar... Greatest Sword... to live up to expectations. <<less

It has a pretty good start, interesting continuation and a shamefully awful ending.

It was an enjoyable read before the final ~100 chapters. The ending was so rushed and shitty that I sincerely wish to forget this bullsh*t.

Even so, thanks to the first 800 chapters I will still rate it as a 4* novel.

P.s. I advice you to stop reading it the moment when the first rank 8 flying mount appears.

Reincarnated power-leveling OP (and a bit c*cky) main character with a world revolving around a VR game. If you like those kind of stories, you'll like this one as well, otherwise it's nothing special. Story is ok, characters are fine but quite one-dimensional. Some details (stats, skills, numbers, etc.) are super exaggerated and all over the place and are sometime conveniently forgotten about to create some suspense. Ending is quite rushed, it deserved something better.

Reading the bad reviews on this novel really makes me wonder what these people are looking for in a Chinese novel on this site. Is there wish fulfillment in this novel? Yes definitely, but virtually every novel on this site is wish fulfillment. Not quite as bad as those wattpad novels that use (your name) instead of giving their main characters actual names, but still very much wish fulfillment

Some reviews talk about how unrealistically lucky the main character is. But this is a major factor in most xuanxia/wuxia novels. There's... more>> a large emphasis on fate in most of these novels. It's a little lazy in my opinion but it keeps the stories moving.

There were a few that mentioned how easy it's been for him to make money but I personally see it as pretty believable. He spent nearly all of his time in the game in his last life so it's natural that he would have a good understanding of what was going to happen when he returned to his younger self. This includes market changes. Knowledge of the future takes all risk out of investing so it's pretty natural that he would make a ton of money.

Personally I didn't mind the romance in this novel. It wasn't full of weird drama and didn't take too much of the story. I enjoyed the interactions between MC and the love interest, even if it was pretty limited. There's also no harem or love triangle which I prefer. Not that I'm against a good harem story it's just that most of them do a terrible job of it.

As with most other Chinese novels the love interest is always considered to be the most beautiful woman in the world and has made every male character fall for her simply because of how beautiful she is. At this point I've pretty much given up all hope of finding a story where this isn't the case. It's annoying when the most you know of the love interest is how they look but I'm used to it by now so it doesn't bother me as much as when I first started reading these types of novels.

There are elements of kingdom building and war strategy in this novel that has been done really well. Compared to his other novels there's a lot more of these elements. The in game politics were pretty interesting to me but I'm also someone who enjoys reading about political intrigues in novels so I'm a little biased.

In the beginning the MC wasn't too op, just really lucky. However in the later chapters I feel like it's gone a little too far. There's pretty much no one who has made the MC actually feel threatened, his skills and equipment place him leagues above the next best character making it pretty annoying when he faces any of his enemies head on, there's pretty much no tension in those cases. There's still a threat on the larger scale though so it's not like there's no tension at all like some novels. The larger organizations are still capable of fighting with the MC in terms of manpower so there's still that.

Overall I've enjoyed this novel a lot so far. It's kept me reading for 900 chapters which is more than I can say for most other of these types of novels. <<less

Things I liked:

    • Brotherhood and stuff
    • Guild building, making allies and expanding territory (kingdom building)
    • MC is an ok guy. Not annoying.
Things I didn't like:

    • the "romance" (if you can call it romance...)
    • No seriously, the romance is a bit vomit inducing. Also,
      Spoiler

MC likes girl in real life, she knows he likes her. She knows who he is in the game, he does not know who she is in the game. She, being
a typical s*upid shallow character with no character traits except being beautiful and rich, has a great idea. To not tell him who she is in the game. And then she has the audacity to get upset when MC implicitly rejects her in the game?? Dose she have a cheese for a brain? The fact that her character has no character, is not offensive to me, but the fact that she can just be this level of petty and s*upid but still so self entitled makes me kind of want to die. Also, not sure why MC is so attracted to her. Besides her face and money. Otherwise, she's pretty useless.

      [collapse]
    • The "sexy scenes" (pls be prepared for vomit inducing lines)
    • Spoiler

"She looked incredibly tender and beautiful. A pair of fair tapered peaks dropped down, trembling lightly."

      [collapse]
    • Spoiler

Xie Yao wasn't wearing anything! Naked!

      [collapse]
    • Spoiler

Her perfect body radiated a fair glow without the slightest blemish. A lascivious fragrance proliferated the air.

      [collapse]
    • Spoiler

"Xie Yao wore a white dress, a simple yet elegant colour which complimented her perfectly. She was brimming with the charm of a young married woman. At this moment, she had truly blossomed into a woman."

      [collapse]
Things that don't make sense:

    • MC just going head to head with literally everyone he doesn't like, even when they are literally more powerful that in him every aspect.
    • MC being so fcking lucky
    • MC is way too OP. He leaves the game for 3 years and within 5 months of coming back is the #1 player in the game.
