The world’s largest VRMMO, Conviction, was almost like a second world for humanity. It had integrated itself into the real world’s economy, with both corporations and individuals seeking their fortunes through the game.

In this game, Nie Yan prided himself on his Level 180 Thief. He could barely be considered among the top experts in the game. Though, that was the only thing he could take pride in. He was penniless and unable to advance in life; a situation he was forced into by the enemy of his father. If it weren’t for the little money he made by selling off items in Conviction, he would’ve barely been able to eat. In the end, he chose to settle his matters once and for all. He assassinated his father’s enemy. He lay dying shortly after being shot in the pursuit.

However, that wasn’t the end of his story. Instead, he awoke moments later to find that he had reincarnated into his past self. Armed with his experience and knowledge of future events, he sets out to live his life anew.

This is a story about how a man with 10 years of future knowledge, plays a game where the mechanics are terrible and goes places at half the required level and grabs loot that nobody will find for the next X months. But he always has to because it's more important than leveling, which he constantly explains he can do faster than anyone else. Basically if you were given the same info and opportunity you would do better than the MC.

MC gets way too strong, way too quick in real life. To a s*upid degree. Like actual, somehow he's slowly getting superpowers.

He's constantly getting smacked in the face with good gear, yet somehow there are others that can match him.

He levels insanely fast, yet there are always a bunch of people at a higher level.

... more>> Basically the author makes him OP to hype you up, then introduces people and change situations to make it so the MC has a challenge.

Everyone also acts so dramatically like once they die in the game, they die in real life. I get why, but even so, just chill a bit.

If you just switch out the hyperbole like" This item will turn him into a God" to "This item is really good", you'll be able to enjoy it.

Honestly the business tactics and the logistics behind running a guild is quite interesting. It gives a good example of how inflation works and why you should be constantly investing money. I would probably enjoy this a lot more without the "let's make the MC super special gear". <<less

[Short story about author. you can skip this if you don't know Mad Snail]

Before I started reading this I had no idea that this was a finished web novel that is in process of translating to English, nor did I know that Mad Snail is the author of this web novel. I was scared witless knowing him as the author of Tales of Demons and Gods. He is notorious for his once in a month chapter releases that are extremely short (2 minuts read, 4-5 minutes at best). When I... more>> was half way through the web novel I wanted to appreciate the author by knowing his name or in this case pen name. I was shocked after learning that it was Mad Snail! He wrote such a good story that can go neck and neck with Legendary Moonlight Sculptor even in some areas being better than LMS. Those people hating on Mad Snail and boycotting his work are just so petty and s*upid for losing on a good read!

[↓About the novel↓]

There is something about reincarnation stories that is so satisfying, being able to go back in time and do it right, having no regrets. From the start of the story we have a mature MC that matures even further as the story progresess.

The story is always hectic and is progressing fast, although it's not tiring binge reading it, it fails to vent some steam, unlike in Moonlight Sculptor where the author takes time to develop the MC outside the game and show some daily life of Lee Hyun (aka Weed) and some other side characters, Mad Snail focuses only on Nie Yan (aka Nirvana Flame) in game and rarely outside of the game which in my opinion fails to humanize the character and with that you bonding with the MC. Let's not mention the side characters that are there in game only.

There isn't much worldbuilding in this web novel but I get Ender's Game (a great book btw) vibe from it, in game worldbuilding isn't much described which makes it simple, but that doesn't mean that there isn't any, from what I get, it's not a big VR game, roughly the size of our planet maybe even less.

The VR game seems pretty well balanced and explained. Even thought our MC has the best gear and skills that doesn't mean that other players can't have them. I've read many comments here from people that wail and moan about the MC having sh*t ton of luck, like that doesn't happen in real life? I think Nie Yan is just a bit lucky compared to other players in the game who don't know anything about the game, he know all the game lore! The AI (/NPCs) in Conviction that at the start feeled outright bad, progresses as the story goes, with the many updates and patchs that happen almost every day in the game.

TL;DR All in all, it's a lovable VRMMORPG, that goes neck and neck with Legendary Moonlight Sculptor. Both have something that is unique to them and neiter of them is a copy paste of the other!

PS It would be groundbreaking if people who read the Legendary Moonlight Sculptor read this web novel and vice versa. This web novel is translating like a gatling gun every day a new chapter, while LMS is a lot slower in translating barely a chapter and a half a month... <<less

Translation and Story progression is good/great all the way.

Intense plot armour of MC is acceptable.

But the one that threw me off is the lackluster quality of opponents. Sure we cant have too strong enemy, but ALL of his enemies (chap690) are characterized simply as s*upid RICH KIDS. This is specially so for his enemies at the TOP military school and his current main opponent.

Seriously, his main opponent is the scion of a very very very rich company and is hailed as a genius, but only have ruthlessness to go on?... more>> No deep schemes on the works, no inside distabilization on MC.

A casual stroll of the MC leads to uncovering plots and treasures of his enemies.

At this point, it seems, new enemies appear just to extend the story a little longer, which for me is kinda waste of time. So I am dropping this here. <<less

This us an amazing story that layers the background and setting to create a vivid world around the main character. Its a wonderfully written and what others may call getting what he wants or turning it around entirely on luck and with ease, I'd ask if they actually interpreted the authors words right the only thing that doesn't add up is dying and coming back to a parallel timeline. Everything else is raised on the knowledge of his past life and using the knowledge and what opportunities are going to... more>> pass as a stepping stone to raise his strangth and avert the previous tragic events from forming and preventing any unforseen events. Aka very stable story. <<less

To be blunt, I find this novel to be bland and boring. Part of the reason for this is because of how OP and all-knowing MC is. Some of you may enjoy that, but I often find that MCs like that hurt the novel when not executed correctly.

What do I mean by that? Well MC has ten years of in-game and life experience over everyone else after travelling back in time, so it's only natural that he grabs all the best loot and is good at the game. But this... more>> means that the story has absolutely no suspense or excitement. MC is never in trouble. None of the battles, albeit cool are really consequential to anything (at least up to ch65) so I don't feel particularly invested or at the edge of my seat when I'm reading it.

This leaves a very dry and bland plot, which at the beginning is just him levelling up, doing dungeons, getting the best loot, and just exploiting his knowledge of the future in general. He basically just goes around wiping the floor with his enemies because he's so strong.

As for MC's goal and motivation, it's weak. Many stories start out with some goal in mind whether it be to become a hero and save the kingdom from the demon king or to clear a death game to return to the real world. Here our MC's motivation and goal isn't explicitly clear but we can assume it's revenge on some guy. Thing is, the way the author sets up the antagonist at the beginning is weak. We never really meet the antagonist so we can't share MCs hate for him. We just know he hates him and why he does, but even that reason isn't that strong. It's not very interesting.

I assume it picks up later on, but I'm not going to stick around that long to find out. Overall, decent novel but the plot is boring and it's hard to empathize with MC's goal for revenge when it seems so petty (basically his father's company got f*cked over s by another company so now he wants to kill the other company's boss's son as revenge). <<less

As far as time-travel wish-fulfillment fantasy goes this starts off pretty good, but gets progressively worse as the story goes on.

There's some interesting world-building in the early chapters, a school romance that isn't half bad, and a quirky cast of likable characters. The first half-or-so is actually pretty good fun. As time goes on, the story's scope gets so big that all of the good stuff just gets lost in the shuffle. And then, there's the actually annoying parts of the story.

Seeing the main character use his future knowledge to... more>> climb the ranks and establish his own guild is interesting, but once he inevitably gets established it just comes down to him and a series of antagonists skirmishing and throwing progressively larger amounts of money at each other. It's kind of interesting at first, but it gets old after it happens a third time.

On the subject of antagonists, while the MC's equip progressively more overpowered abilities, it's even more annoying when the antagonists do it. For instance:

Spoiler

At one point, the current antagonist triggers an event where he takes control of what is essentially an end-game raid boss and an endless horde of undead to destroy the entire light-side faction. The developers basically put a game-over button in their MMO for a player to find, and the situation would have been completely unwinnable if the MC didn't have future knowledge.

[collapse]

Finally, there's the last arc of the story, which is really more of an extended epilogue. It's painfully contrived, it goes on forever, and none of it matters because it all happens after the main conflict is resolved.

I can give it a tentative recommendation, but I recommend pulling out when the final arc comes around (you'll know it when you see it). <<less

Rebirth of the Thief Who Roamed the World is an extremely slow-paced novel. With multiple chapters covering less sometimes not even a day. I was worried that this book would become boring. However, after around 4 days and 370+ chapters later, I still haven't gotten bored of it. The rating of 4.1 stars is a bit too low in my opinion, I would put it at 4.3 stars at the minimum.

The good parts of this novel can be described quite simply since the whole theme is set around Nie... more>> Yan and Conviction, a near realistic VR MMORPG. Generally, the time spent in this usually involves us reading about the people he meets in Conviction, the money he earns, the monsters he defeats etc. This whole part of the story I would give a solid 4.2 stars. The fight scenes haven't become mundane even after 370+ chapters since they're a bit far apart and at the same time add something new every time. There is a constant stream of different characters with personalities that differ. A big problem that is often seen in specifically Web Novels are no-personality heroines. The heroine of this story, Xie Yao, has a personality, though it is a bit bland. The plethora of other characters have also made the novel an interesting read. There are multiple other good things about this novel but I'm not going to continue this out of fear that it's going to become an essay.

The best parts of this book, however, are the IRL chapters. They're few and far between but they're a solid 5 stars. Not once have I felt remotely close to being bored when reading them. The characters have much more distinct personalities in the IRL chapters. I don't want to say much more since it could spoil way too much. Essentially, these chapters are the Michelin star desert on this already great meal. Since they're so uncommon you don't get tired of them.

Onto the bad things. The main character is a bit overpowered at some times, people fawn over him and rever him as a god, there are some difficulties the main character must face however they're not really something that makes you fear them, the leveling system seems to be created by a brain-dead toddler, the pacing is slow with only a 2-3 months passing after chapter 372 (however this shouldn't discourage you too much, the novel is still really good), apparently the average IQ in this futuristic world is 160, and the main character has a 206 IQ. They use this plot device as an excuse so the MC can remember anything (he even remembers the exact coordinates of a specific place after over 10 years), the heroine may have a personality, however, it really isn't that interesting. There are a couple more things that are small, however, I can't remember them.

All in all, this novel is a worthy read. Read it. <<less

I really enjoyed this story; however, it was a bit repetitive with all the guild wars which ended in the same way. The ending was also a bit rushed :

Spoiler

When Nie Yan came back after 3 years which was a time-skip and everyone's level is higher than him, he somehow still manages to reach the top within 5 months when other people had 3 years to do so. In addition, to that Mad Snail simply just gave everything he needed in the end to become the #1 player in the game. The final fight between him and the #1 player in the underworld was finished in 2 or 3 chapters, and the climax between their god level summons from the Pope title and the Dark Council title was simply just skipped. Though I'm still happy Nie Yan and Xie Yao got married, Mad Snail added no description to it and simply said they got married in secret during the 3-year time skip. He didn't really put any thought into their romance and just said they traveled the world for that 3 years. Lastly, the ending was just a reenactment of something that happened in the past and really didn't give a conclusive ending.

[collapse]

To be honest, I didn't really mind the rushed parts and I would probably read it again sometime in the future. If you don't mind the mistakes the Author makes from forgetting some of the minor details such as skills he gotten but never used, it would be a really enjoyable read. <<less

At this point, after reading a handful of LNs that are more or less in the same vein as this, I recalibrated my brain so now my greatest expectation when starting an LN recommended on this site is its capacity to entertain me (it's the only the redeeming quality that can make me continue reading a story peppered with one-dimensional characters, predictable plotlines, and misogynistic crap. Well, unless it contains blatant disregard to an actual r*pe that happened in the story and the MC being a dickwad just to be... more>> an unnecessary plot point. Not that high of a mountain to climb, I know, but I'm desperate for more reading materials and sometimes it's cathartic to read a story about a person having great luck and things going smooth in ther life for once, and this is free, so.) yeah, this one delivered in the entertaining front so, 4-star from me. The MC is actually likeable, made me invested about his life and all. He actually worked hard for his OPness because all his memories would have been useless otherwise. His mercenary squad is hilarious, I live for their interactions. I'm looking forward to reading more from this story. <<less

I like this novel, however, there are flaws. Lets go over them:

  1. Xie Yao doesn't get much attention. She is the main character's love yet the author doesn't seem to expand on this. When there is a coupled engaged, it is essential that both parties hold nothing back. However, the author does not show us any or even some of Xie Yao's personal problems. As I read more and more, I imagined Xie Yao as more of a side-chick when she is in fact Nie Yan's love. It's like she is there... to be there.
  2. Needs a follow up. (I can't spoil everything so I will be as general as possible). Maybe try to go more in depth in the characters that Nie Yan meets, for example: Cao Xu, the main antagonist.
  3. Go more in depth in the.
    Spoiler

"three year period" Leaving a blind spot in the three year period after being shot is depressing for many people. Sure we know that Nie Yan and Xie Yao actually cooked rice and had a daughter, but that is it. No turmoil, assassination attempts, etc.

    [collapse]
  4. Spoiler

Author has to expand on Nie Yan and Xie Yao 's children. They briefly get mentioned, but nothing is said about them (I know that the novel only mentions that Nie Yan had a daughter but towards the end, it is hinted that Nie Yan and Xie Yao cook rice again).

    [collapse]
This novel is very good. I highly recommend you read it. It's not one of those overly high novels that take up 1200+ chapters *Hey Dark Crow, the Teacher of Immortal Emperors*. I guarantee that once you are done reading this, you will feel a sense of nostalgia.

The novel has a fantastic potential, but you would need an editor to go through it first, there's a lot to like here from characters to world building, but reading it will probably be a chore.

Like many other chinese novels, it's plagued by repetition from the most useless ones to entire paragraphs rephrasing everything you just read. It got to a point where I could skip entire paragraphs reading just a few words without missing out anything on the novel.

Many things are greatly exaggerated, the costs of vehicles, their top... more>> speed, the strength and intellect of every teenager and adults, even how long a fight lasts; specially when it comes to the game world, I feel like it would've been better if the author didn't focus so much on numbers or skill descriptions and instead just presented us with the adventure.

Spoiler

As an example, the story goes to great length explaining how he never really focused on training his body, and later even studying became secondary, his household also couldn't afford supplements for training his body. As a result he's not that tall and is seen as frail by others.

Despite all that, days after he comes back to the past and start training, he's already as strong or even stronger than a professional fighter...

[collapse]

Frankly, to me, it doesn't feel real when the author is trying to throw numbers at every opportunity, and that makes it hard to really immerse yourself in the novel.

The characters and their interactions are pretty enjoyable, though I'm not particularly fond of the main character, he acts like only those who helped him during his time of hardship are worthy of respect, even though he was never anything more than an acquaintance to the majority of people in his school life or otherwise. It makes him come off as arrogant and selfish, thinking everyone should've helped him. But that is just my opinion. <<less

Its amazing how the author put everything together to blend the virtual and real elements in an acceptable way. The story progress in an interesting fashion and there aren't any major loopholes or discouraging factors to make you stop reading the novel. I found it very refreshing to find such novel and was worth reading.

It was one of few novels where I felt like it would have been good if there were more chapters.

Kinda ok if u have time to spare. In late game they are many more "skillful" than him but because he started early, he become more powerful with the help of equipments and pets/mounts. I dropped this novel not because it totally sucks but there's no motivation/goal and somewhat lacking.

Mad Snail once again copy/paste TDG once again but this time is a VMMORPG we got the whole deal a MC name Nie, a female heroine that loves the protagonist for no reason but doesn't admit, fatty friend, rich douche guy is the villain, big breast girl likes the MC but he doesn't like her, a OP book colleting his pages, memorys from reicarnation, MC is super OP in everything even having a weak body after training for 2 days and so on.

Now why this novel isn't good even if... more>> copy TDG? Because the game sucks! The autor makes the worst sin in the game he put a gamebreaking item for the MC that would never exist in a MMORPG the pages from that book can let 1 player kill 500 players. I love it. Nie Yan, also known as Nirvana Flame, goes back in time. With the skills of a gamer who's played the same game for years, he is back at the games beginning. He decides to use his knowledge to build a foundation of wealth, fame, and power so that his father can successfully start up his future business, and prevent his version 1''s tragedy. The setting is fairly standard for a mmorpg thing, but dear lord, the author tries his very best to make it as unbelievable as possible, especially when it comes to the finances.

Spoiler

We're told repeatedly throughout the first 100 chapters or so that several silvers is a fortune to normal players, we're further told that the mc's income is ridiculously large and as a single entity, he can control more property than other major guilds,.... yet we're told he controls 3% of the property on the server?........... Excuse me? If we're going by any other mmorpg novel, major guilds are ridiculous, have sponsorships and generally control a significant portion of power by themselves.... How the everloving **** does that make sense if MC HAS to have higher income than most of them (at one point it was said that daily income from one dungeon run is a few silvers, as opposed to 35 gold, 100 silver: 1 gold, 3500 compared to several 10's.... Yes, you could argue hey, more dungeons, EXCEPT that logic doesn't work when "experts" clearing 10 dungeons in 2 days creates an uproar. This guy needs a calculator.

[collapse]

Well.. actually, not only finances, numbers in general are a real problem with this.... balancing is kinda off as w- Look, the mmo setting is just extremely poorly planned, in fact, I'd argue it's not even planned at all. *facepalm*

This isn't even talking about how ridiculously overpowered the MC is and/or how little thievery actually happens in the novel (basically every other mmo novel I've read at least features ksing someone else's boss, this one has....... looting corpses?... at best?). Also if this was a xianxia novel with inheritances, this guy is probably on par for gaining every inheritance in the world, It wouldn't be so bad if there was some world building in between arcs of getting new op items, but it's been get new op item -> stumble across another op item -> stumble across another op item. Sprinkle in some nonsensical numbers and even more pointless interpersonal relationships and you've got this novel. I don't even know what to think about it.

There's very few redeeming qualities unless you really like reading about op MCs which is basically every xianxia novel anyway. Would suggest reading other novels with a more believable setting. Was hoping for the plot to get more interesting but so far, it's failing to deliver on that end really hard.

Edit: as of the last 50 odd chapters, the author has pretty much glossed over the economy and gone back to basically pure action. Makes for a better read, although the setting still needs a lot of work in my opinion, especially given the randomness of plot points. They were charted in advance but poorly explained and thus far... even more poorly execute. I'll up the rating to 3 stars since moving back to action makes the novel more in line with what the author is good at but there's still a lot of flaws. Most of them practically impossible to ignore. <<less

Rebirth, Virtual Reality MMORPG, Knowledge of the Future, what's not to love? Hell I'd love to be Nie Yan in this kind of situation, hell I'd probably do a lot of the things he's doing with what I know of the present and use it to reshape the past how I see fit.
