Reborn as a Prophet in a Horror Movie

Description

I’ve come back to life as a prophet in a B-grade horror film that bombed at the box office in the summer of 1999 and faded into obscurity.

Luckily, I managed to survive, not as the female lead who witnesses all the horrors, nor as the handsome male lead who you’d expect to survive but tragically dies. I’m not the sleazeball who gets offed in a particularly gruesome way after hitting on every woman in sight, nor the best friend of the female lead who shares a fleeting romantic moment with a lover in an obviously creepy forest. Nope, I’m the prophet.

As a prophet, I thought my role was just to warn the main characters and then exit the scene, but…

[Choking… Coughing… Wheezing…]

An alien creature, known only as Monster X, has taken an unsettling interest in me.

[Heavy breathing…]

And as if that’s not enough, a gas mask-wearing, knife-wielding maniac decides to skip heading to the cabin where the protagonists are and make a pit stop at the convenience store where I’m working.

What’s going on? Why is all this happening to me, a mere side character?!

Come for the romance, stay for the horror.

The scenes (and gore) are described quite vividly. Reminds me of typical horror movie where MC and company are chase around by monsters and serial killers, getting wounded so many times that you would question why are they still alive, then finally survived. Good read for those that like horror.

Not for those that like OP MC.

Personal rant:

Spoiler

If you've seen typical horror movie, the protagonist is suddenly thrown to horror situation (either by accident, nosiness, or s*upidity), then getting scared, being chased around, and somehow survived, then yes, this novel is like that.

I expected more of MC, because he's a "prophet". As someone who knew the future, especially someone who believed to be reborn to a horror movie, MC was without preparation at all when facing the movie scene. Sure, he believed he is merely an extra and won't join in the fun, but it's really frustrating to read in the early part where all he could do is run away in fear. He did not train his body nor did he prepare weapon, defense equipment, or anything at all. Author introduced MC as that typical unathletic nerd character, who sometimes got bullied. Made me wonder why author made him to be reincarnated, rather than just having "prophetic" power.

Maybe I've gotten too used to reading reincarnation novel where the protagonist became much better (almost OP) in their second life.

First arc (the movie scene) ended around chapter 55.

The next few arcs are small cases, in which MC traveled around as truck driver and ML chased after him. Author made it interesting that MC faced the horror situation first like an average person, then how ML faced the situation. Personally I would love to have the ML as the protagonist rather than MC. Cause when ML and the serial killers meet, you will wonder who's the real serial killer (but he's still a law-abiding citizen, if no one harms him then he won't harm anyone).

It's been 50 chapters and they didn't meet yet.

[collapse]

You know that situation when you facepalmed over a character's action in horror movie?

Spoiler

One of the small arc when MC travelled around alone. He rested on a motel, then rented some movies from a Video Rental Store. Sure, his hobby is to watch horror movies in his previous life, but after what he experienced (real life horror movie) and his strong desire to avoid supernatural stuff... WHY WOULD YOU STILL WATCH HORROR???

Of course, as a protagonist of horror novel, dear author granted his wish for thrill. Somehow there's an extra video called "Real Situation", which MC happily watch thinking it was a bonus. After realizing that the scene of the movie was his hotel room, he did not immediately stop watching--instead his curiosity increased.

... Yeah, well, it's the usual self-inflicted tragedy.

Not a big follower of the horror genre in any type of media as I'm easily scared and squeamish, however the execution of this novel so far has me yearning for more horror BLs.

The descriptions are insanely immersive. The author must have a gift for painting the scenery and mood with words alone because my imagination is so vivid when I follow each chapter. A habit anyone has when it comes to consuming horror is to try and use clues laid in the build up to predict what the jumpscare... more>> might be or what the suspense is building up to, and if the media is poorly done it is de-immersing. However when reading this novel, whether you're right or wrong about your predictions, the descriptions and writing is so immersive that I found myself getting spooked nonetheless and hiding beneath my covers - heck sometimes I even light a thousand candles in hopes that I'm not right. The characters are written very well that you root for them, so when they are in danger you cannot help but be scared as well! Reviewing the horror aspect alone, I think it has been great so far. You can tell the author has either done quite a bit of research into the genre or they're just a horror nerd themselves - either way, great exploration of the different ways horror manifests in various real works!

As for the romance, it is kind of slow and subtle but I think that's what makes it work. The characters have so much presence individually as they aren't immediately shoved together and joined at the hip. They have their own individual strengths and weaknesses. To me I found that their greatest positive attribute is simultaneously their greatest negative attribute that lands them in trouble! Great reminder that at the end of the day, these characters are very much only human and you kind of admire them for that. The novel is plot heavy but you can still tell the author cares a lot about the main relationship. Crumbs and subtle hints on how the MC views the ML are scattered into the small habits that he does when he's scared, when he's overwhelmed, also his body language when he thinks of the ML, the gasp-worthy giddy feeling you get from all these things and more are amplified by the slow burn! Some people may not resonate with this if they're looking for a short term read or dislike slowburns, but if you are patient with these characters and clock into the subtext and unspoken feelings the author weaves within the spaces of the words, the romance is consistently rewarding no matter if the portion being fed in one paragraph is a crumb or a giant buffet. I mean, as humans, the feelings we hold towards someone is never expressed through walls of exposition right? The tells are in who we lean towards in a conversation, the mementos we keep close to us, the things we do in regards to each other even when we're not together in the moment. That's probably the novel's biggest strengths when it comes to relationships.

I waffled on quite a lot but if you are looking for a long term read to invest in and a slow burn romance with story, this is like top 10 picks of BL novels that you should choose (coming from someone who has been following this for months since around chapter ~20). On top of it, this novel has an incredible translator who does the novel so much justice to the point where I feel like I'm just reading a published book off the library shelf. I sincerely wish for more horror BL novels like this to arise, but I think a partial reason for why it is so good is because it was just done well plain and simple as horror isn't an easy genre to execute especially with only words. Anywho, please read this! More people should know about this!

Rooting for you Johan! Let's get you that boyfriend, brother! <<less

So far, this has been an excellent read. The horror and gore is well written. And the translation is excellent. I rarely see a well executed horror romance, but this book exceeded my expectations. The male lead has been one of the best I have seen in a while. "While the main character faces the horror, the ML is a horror to the horrors"

Translations : 10/10 (It's amazing)

The author is very good at writing, the overarching twist was amazing. I thought it was going to be solely about the black lake, but I was wrong, it's a collection of supernatural incidents that occurs around our Main Character. I might be wrong, but the arcs till where I am now draws references to existing movies.

Arc List References

Spoiler

Arc 1 - Friday the 13th/Creature from Black Lake (Lagoon)

Arc 2 - Husk/Into the Tall Grass

Arc 3 - A typical crossroad plot.

Arc 4 - 1408/The Ring

Arc 5 - The Hitchhiker

Arc 6 - The Wizard of Oz/The invisible man

I love myself a humane MC, but let me (rant). The author likes nerfing MC a lot despite giving him incredible settings. It's as if the author wants to balance his op powers so much that it makes MC seem inherently s*upid.

He's really not that bad, but my main point is, MC being "prophet" and "reborn" in the title isn't that relevant to the plot because it's useless when he's running for his life. Think of him as a normal human burdened with the titles of a reincarnator and a prophet instead. He's the prime example of a unreliable narrator. It wasn't what I expected after reading the sypnosis but unexpectedly, I really like the ride the author is giving us.

For the romance, the ML is an obvious love brain. MC isn't reciprocrating and he thinks of ML as a human shield. It's especially hilarious when ML is flirting during life and death situations.

Spoiler

Man is h**ny 24/7 and ready to jump into Seojun's pants. Patient and innocent my ass. ML is very possessive and since every arc has an intermission of his POV, you'd quickly realise this dude is definitely not normal.

[collapse]

The set-up is well thought of, and I love love the description and nuanced stereotyping of cast members. The characters are easy to remember and the cliche premise of horror movies isn't a big deal since it's layered with mystery. There are changes in scenes and timeperiods which are done well, though the jumps might seem confusing at the start, it slowly starts making sense when you connect the dots.

Serious kudos to the translations because it's so fluid and captures the mood greatly. I would've given it a 5/5 just for the translations. <<less

This story is breathtaking. It's like being born in a world that's made up of every B horror movie.

This story is scary. The horror is so well written, I find myself immersed in the situation. Sometimes I'm biting my lip while holding my breath and other times I'm clutching a space an injury has occurred. In my head, I'm constantly putting myself in the situation with my heart going 100 miles a second. The translations are so smooth and ensure the reader understands the references as well.

Based on the cover... more>> and the genre, you'd think the story heavily focuses on the relationship but the romance is a slow burn in a way that has you holding your breath when the main characters interact and squealing when you see the male lead's viewpoint. Overall, the building relationship adds to the entire vibe of this story.

I just started this story, there were 90 chapters and I didn't set my phone down for 3 days. I'm a giant BL fan, and while it wasn't what I was envisioning, I don't feel like anything is missing. As a B movie fanatic, this work scratches an itch I didn't know I had. <<less

first of all, amazing translation, many thanks to the translator!

second, amazing, I need more BL horror in my life

it's very thrilling in both ways, and as someone who can't really handle horror movies cause the audio and visual get me too easily lol, this book really delivers what I do enjoy of horror movies.

the only thing I find frustrating is how lowkey dumb the MC is like omg you'd think he'd be more suspicious/ paranoid in later arcs

Spoiler

so I get that the first arc really took a lot out of him, but honestly, the way that he's not as suspicious or paranoid of the other situations he gets himself into frustrates the crap out of me. Like, he doesn't even seem to think twice about some things, even though it's quite clear or definitely something he should've thought twice about uuugh

[collapse]

another thing is how frustratingly slow
Spoiler

the reunion between Johan and Seojun is taking! How on earth have they been separated longer than they've been together??? Like come on, I think it's about time for them to reunite and start going through these situations together and also get together fr. I think the biggest reason why I feel frustrated is because Johan's been chasing Seojun this whole time, so we've been seeing a close chase for so many chapters and not once have there been any hints or contact between the two. I think that's also the frustrating part, that it doesn't seem quite clear what happened between the two before Seojun just left and his thought process and whatnot. Bet that he still doesn't know how to react or answer Johan's confession because he didn't think on it much -- which valid, he's been in a lot of life or death situations, but idk I just think we should have some more internal development regarding the romance lol

[collapse]

again, amazing translations, and thank you so much translator!! <<less

A fun and interesting horror BL!

The first arc is the one described in the summary, it's takes several horror tropes but borrows the most heavily from the camp slasher type horror ala Friday the 13th while throwing in some other fun stuff.

Even though the characters are based on cliches for the first arc, I quite like the side characters. The side romance is honestly kinda sweet. While it plays into the genre, it's not mean spirited.

After the first arc, the story sorta opens up into this uh gauntlet of horror... more>> tropes. The scenarios are pretty classic but fun and exciting in their own way! It alternates POVs from Seojun and ML. Seojun's pov is generally suspenseful and tense.

Honestly I enjoy the American setting. Firstly, there's a lot of horror born from America (cornfields, motels, gas station, summer camp) and secondly, it's very funny for reborn Korean Seojun to despair over the real American horror - American healthcare and health insurance.

So Seojun, our protag. I have a love hate relationship with him. He's like a sopping wet cat who is constantly drowning in the nearest body of water. Honestly, he can be selfish, paranoid, callous, and unhinged. But like that's the point. Seojun is this unhinged coward but then he does something selfless or kind and you see he's trying to be a better person despite being a hot mess. He is also mentally hanging by a thread but it's a resilient thread! Honestly, considering he is Always encountering The Horrors I'll give him a pass.

ML. I love him lol. He's also experiencing the horrors but aceing them. Romance is slow but he's constantly present in the story so it doesn't feel too slow. Since Seojun is the kind of guy who attracts horrors, you can guesswhat kind of guy ML might be! But he's still cute.

Also shout-out to the translation. It really captures the suspense and gore, I really enjoyed reading it. <<less

First of, kudos to the translator who's doing an amazing translation.

About the story... I felt like the first arc was a bit draggy but overall it was okay. The others arcs are smaller basically ML running after our MC who keep having supernatural encounters.

Spoiler

i feel a bit betrayed about the misleading title. I really wanted to read some transmigration into an horror movie..

It's my first time reading horror bl novels, maybe it's uncommon for this genre. I was drawn on every characters personalities, and the story plot unveiling even more was quite a suprise for me, I was not expecting an even more facts and coincidence they faced on one night. Aside from minor anguish from not doing and that, I'd say it was a typical plot for a horror I guess haha. Overall, it's quite a good story so give it a try. Also thanks for the translators who translated this,... more>> it was good and easy read for your good translation, thank you. <<less

Intriguing. I really want to read more chapters :)

At first glance seems like typical teen slasher, but there is going to be BL romance so... cannot wait for more to see how it plays out.

Translation - so far really good, looks like translator actually makes sure words in sentences have correct order and sentences make sense in English (not obvious thing for Korean translations).

I'm giving 5 stars for translation quality for now as it's hard to score novel after just 6 chapters, but I may come back to add... more>> more to review further into the novel. <<less

It stays true to the horror genre!

It has a very american-horror-movie feel, which is accurate to the plot. I really liked it cause horror genre is so rare for BL novels. Everything was perfect for me tbh,

Until the second arc lol. But its not that serious, its just frustrating how MC acts like the stereotypical horror movie character making dumb decisions, when in the first arc he was wary and smart. Overall will continue to read nonetheless though, so far it isnt my favorite, but yeah its also slow... more>> burn. And I love me some slow burn + plot.

Edit: I actually liked (not love) the second arc! It was only annoying at first. Tbh I LOVED the horror concepts that they had, it didnt drag on and it kept me going. I like the ML being a contrast to the MC as well. No words can describe how I love and need horror concepts like this in BL!!! Its classic horror, genuinely scary, and its funny in some ways but it isnt a comedy genre either. MC is realistic and likeable imo. The only con about this novel is the lack of interaction of both the MC and the ML when the cover IS focused more on both the MC and the ml. I feel like if they just added more interaction between the two itd be perfection...

I still like it nonetheless cause horror in a BL is so rare and its written nicely too! I recommend giving it a read. Also the translation is reallyyy good and understandable! Thank you translator! <<less

A novel that will constantly keep you hooked, stands out from the rest of the Horror BL genre.

Currently the novel is cut into 2 clear part:

Part 1: The parts that directly follows the synopsis you've read above, it ends around chapter ... more>>
Spoiler

56.

[collapse]

It is fairly standalone with few unresolved threads, one of which is

Spoiler

the romance between Johan (ML) and Seojun (MC).

[collapse]

It's exactly what the synopsis promised and even more, the characters are well built, they strive to achieve their goals and confront themselves, their own fears, etc to stand as strong as they possibly can in the situation they're put in. The author is not afraid to portray the loss of characters in the middle of their horrific circumstances as well as the violence they're exposed to and the remnant it leaves on the cast, both mentally and physically.

Part 2: The episodic part of the novel, with a fairly standard formula you'll quickly grasp when reading. The horror genre however does not weaken even if the narration of one mini-arc is short (felt like about 10 chapter-ish per mini-arc while reading).

Formula goes as follow for those interested:

Spoiler

Seojun encounters a horrifying event-> it stimulate his trauma from what he previously experienced->He somehow manages to escape/resolve the situation by the skin of his teeth->goes on with his road trip

Johan chases after Seojun->Encounters the follow up of Seojun's previous horror accident-> becomes the horror to the horrors->goes on with trying to catch up with Seojun.

[collapse]

However the formula the author uses doesn't water down the experience as it allow them to offers a brand new perspective, direct continuation/development of previous situations. The novel is prevented from growing stale by the unique narrative of each mini-arc which is well thought out and nicely portraying the psychology of the characters.

I can only give many thanks to the translator LadyhotcombTL for picking up this novel and novel like Rise of the Othergod Apostle which to me are breath of fresh air and a joy to see updated when I check. <<less

SO UNDERRATED ! Would definitely recommend, and I don't know why people aren't giving this a read. For a fun thematic horror slasher survival bl novel, that doesn't neglect the slasher thriller aspect with delectable sprinkles of romance and moments (can't wait to see where it goes, although it hasn't been fully fleshed out yet). Not sure how normal the ML is yet despite his puppy dog demeanor, but that keeps the suspense of things ;)

I'm a big fan of horror/survival genre, and theres honestly not a lot of... more>> good ones out there. But the premise of this is quite entertaining (could be abit cliche for someppl) although it might not be down everyone's alley- you can still have an enjoyable time reading it.

Definitely a great read if your needing a break or want something easy and lightweight to digest. And there is great tension and action as well.

I love the way the story is written, the pace and characters are consistent and well done. The lore is also quite interesting as we discover more, looking forward to seeing what we will unravel

And thank you to the translator for such high quality translations ! They make the story worthy of reading and allow smooth reading experience :) <<less

I bookmarked this a year ago, but I only started to read it now. It really didn't disappointed me.

This novel is a great read for horror fans. Every cases MC and ML gone through is typical plot in horror franchise, which means the author must have research a lot beforehand when writing this novel.

Another thing that makes me enjoy this is the build of characters. MC knows about the future and has an OP ability to read people's fortune, but he's still the one who always hopelessly swayed around by... more>> the games. On another hand, ML, who doesn't care much about horrors, literally plays with the scenarios however he likes, and triumphantly comes out unscathed with the upper hand, even if he has to face the hard-mode aftermath MC left behind. It really creates a twisted sense of humor.

But that's what makes they compatible for each other.

MC, no matter how much he had suffered, still remain a kind-hearted, sympathetic person. He is the whiteness hidden behind the black exterior.

ML, who is willing to do everything so that he could be with his love, would never hesitate to commit evil things, so that he could protect MC. The angel-like ML is no doubt the devil in disguise. <<less

This novel is so fun. I’m a coward and generally don’t like horror but although this novel does have genuinely terrifyingly suspenseful scenes, I didn’t mind. Everyone is so well-characterized and fleshed out. The main first arc goes up to about chapter 50 something or so, and the rest of the story is almost episodic. MC is adorable and ML deserves to be in h**ny jail. The translation is also amazing; I’ve read hundreds and hundreds of novel translations and this has got to be top 5.

I've never been big on horror, so I was worried this wouldn't be my cup a tea, but I'm so happy I gave it a shot!

At first I wasn't too big on the whole idea of Seojun being a seer/ prophet, since I haven't read too many stories where characters can actually see the future as a power, instead of just knowing it due to time shenanigans, but I like how things don't hinge only on his power. And when his power is actually used/ relevant? It isn't a fix... more>> all or overly precise, and largely is just a tool he can use.

Spoiler

And I particularly like how the future vision isn't his most active power/ only power. Turns out he can see the past of people and objects he touches, which is obviously a more useful ability for uncovering information that he can actually use when he wants. The future visions? From where I'm reading now, it doesn't seem like a power that he can use when he wants just yet, which makes it feel more special and important. Like it might happen when there's a large looming threat that will endanger him - similar to events for the story's first arc.

[collapse]

Overall I just find it impressive to see a story that doesn't overly rely on it's seer MC, but still makes what he's seen important enough to affect the story.

As for Seojun himself? He's definitely a pessimist and seems to me like he's constantly trying to convince himself he's a bad person. Considering one of the plot twists
Spoiler

where he was just reborn and didn't realize due to his parents being overprotective (for a valid reason) and not letting him access the internet for years.

[collapse]
and that he does have actual visions, not just memories of his past life, I think it makes sense that he's harsh on himself. Seeing/ knowing things that have or will happen and knowing (or at least believing) no one will believe him is understandably going to make him feel like anything he does isn't enough. I feel like it could be summed up as a "if you can't help, you're just contributing to the problem" mindset. Clearly an unhealthy way of thinking, but it doesn't feel out of place. It actually fits, especially when he does help where he can, despite being scared out of his mind most of the time. Maybe I could sum him up as a brave coward? He wants to stay out of dangerous situations, understandably, but once he's involved he doesn't try to weasel out, even if his inner thoughts are constantly thinking of wanting to just run for safety.

As for the dear love interest Johan, he's something else. Not in a bad way, but wow was I surprised. A reliable simp is probably the most lighthearted way to describe him, but maybe a better way might be that he's like a dedicated husband who is
Spoiler

incredibly open to torture and mu*der if it's for the love of his life, Seojun

[collapse]

Johan is sorta overly rational, but it's not to the point where he's one of those characters that sees no point in caring about people or acknowledging emotions; he has people he cares about other than Seojun, just obviously not as intensely, and he isn't unexpressive or cold and just wearing a mask to seem like a normal person. He's a reliable friend to people, at least if he sees them as friends. He's incredibly observant and intelligent too, to the point that I kinda suspect he already figured out Seojun had seer powers before the story started

Spoiler

and realized Seojun wears gloves because he doesn't see as much if he doesn't touch people or objects very often

[collapse]
.

Overall I think Seojun and Johan are both a great match that balance each other out well with the ways their characters contrast each other, and are both really fun and interesting to follow along to. It's even hilarious how it feels like they're two different archetypes from different genres at times.

As for the story itself, I love it so damn much! I can't say there feels like an overall plot going on, as right now it really feels like brickwork is being laid out that might be relevant later or not, but I'm enjoying it all the same. It's kinda a wild ride right from the beginning, but even after calming down the pacing and events are still exciting and leave me wanting more. Somehow it's like a perfect blend of horror, thriller and slice-of-life to me, if that makes sense.

I'm going to be sticking around and reading every new chapter posted! <<less
