Jiang Shuyi lived for fifteen years basking in imperial favor. As the emperor’s most beloved consort, she enjoyed a life of luxury and affection, envied by all and unmatched within the harem. The emperor treated her like a precious jewel, gentle and indulgent.

However, beneath this golden dream lay a fatal blindness. She failed to see through her seemingly demure younger sister, never suspecting the wolf beneath the surface. In the end, it was her own kin who exposed her alleged crimes. Her carefully constructed world crumbled, and even her cherished son turned cold, sneering, “If only I had been born of Aunt instead.”

Branded a seductive enchantress, Jiang Shuyi became the shame of the court. Yet, amid the whispers and condemnation, only one man stood by her—the emperor. He locked her away, not in punishment, but out of possessive devotion. Every night, he came to her side, unable to let go.

Beneath the gauzy curtains, his hand traced the contours of her tear-stained face, his voice low and tender—a prison made of longing, a love that refused to die, and a second chance to rewrite fate.

Translator here,

I came across a review where someone rated this novel just 1 star, and I can understand that not everyone will resonate with a story. It’s a bit disheartening to see such strong negativity without giving it a fair chance. The female lead (FL) in this story isn’t your typical fiercely independent character; she’s someone who has experienced deep betrayal from those she loved dearly and spent a decade trying to protect them.

Is she a perfect person? Certainly not, but she’s very human, shaped by her experiences of... more>> love, loss, and betrayal. The emperor, who stands by her side, is the only source of positive influence in her life. He’s not without flaws—he is the emperor, after all—but the way he treats her with honesty and care contrasts sharply with the way she’s been treated by others.

Yes, she may become emotional and cling to him, especially as she navigates her rebirth. To her, he represents hope and safety in a daunting world filled with challenges, aside from the support she gets from two loyal consorts. I think it’s important to acknowledge her journey. Jiang Fei might not fit the mold of the strong protagonist we expect, but I genuinely empathize with her struggles. Like many, I’ve found myself relying on others for emotional stability at times. Let’s give her some grace and the opportunity for growth throughout the story. Just wanted to share my thoughts! <<less
