His mother passed away when he was three, leaving him and his often-absent hunter father to depend on each other for survival.
His father had thick brows and big eyes, which made him look quite frightening. Every time little Yuanbao sat down for a meal with him, he would end up crying from fear and calling out for his mother.
The hunter didn’t know what to do and, with a matchmaker’s help, found a stepmother for Yuanbao.
To give his son a better life, the hunter worked even harder in the mountains and only came home once every ten days or half a month.
But instead of growing closer to his son, he became more distant-and didn’t even realize Yuanbao was being mistreated.
It wasn’t until two years later, when he saw that his son-who had been raised with good food and drink-was thinner and weaker than poor boys his age, that he sensed something was wrong.
The hunter was so worried he couldn’t sleep. It was around this time that a childhood engagement he had arranged for Yuanbao came knocking on their door.
Hiding behind the door, little Yuanbao saw a new boy in the house-tall and sturdy, with an arm nearly as thick as Yuanbao’s leg.
He thought his father had brought home another “older brother.” And seeing how this one was even bigger and stronger than the last, Yuanbao was certain he was going to be bullied again.
Frightened, he began to cry: “I don’t want another brother. Make him go away.”
But the boy didn’t get angry. He simply crouched down and gently wiped Yuanbao’s tear-streaked face:
“Don’t chase me away, okay? I’ll buy you sweet rice.”
