Xue Huai sold his life to Yun Cuo.

He ran away from home for him, wield a sword for him, and died in battle for him, just to end up earning the title of “incompetent protector.”

After his death, his ashes were placed on the head of the bed by Yun Cuo, loosening the soil without a reason.

After hearing about this, Xue Huai was so angry that he became a haunted ghost and prepared to go to Yun Cuo’s bed to scare people.

But only to see the cold and arrogant Emperor facing his ashes, crying and trembling.

Before he could fully understand the situation, he was reborn.

He thought to himself: It seems a bit pitiful, but let’s avoid the boss in this lifetime.

The clever young master of the Xue family, who had been spoiled growing up, changed his attitude, listened to his family, and went to a place 108,000 miles away to cultivate.

That early spring, when he was cultivating, the person he had been avoiding suddenly appeared and blocked him under the pear tree, saying “I heard that you are good at doing homework. Help me with my teacher’s homework, can you?”

The young man was as sharp as a knife. He tried hard and gave him a somewhat awkward smile.

Is there snow tonight, is there no snow tonight?

I only dream about idle people, not about you.

This is actually not as bad as the rating. I gave it 5 stars to balance it.

So both the MC and ML are reborn. In his new life, the MC didn't want to have anything to do with ML, while the ML wanted to start over with MC.

Eventhough the tittle said "Tyrant", the ML actually good to MC. He didn't force him and actually trying to get close to him slowly.

However since it's still only a few chapters translated, we don't know much. I hope it will stay good or... more>> better. <<less

An interesting story. It's not overly emotional, but the plot and the evolution of the relationship are engaging. What captivated me the most was the personality of the MC, Xue Huai. Unlike a typical xianxia shoe, he always kept his head clear, and never lost himself in passion, though he knows anger and hatred. Compared to the ML he is equally ruthless, but can be warm and kind. When the person he loved was lost to him, he set aside his infatuation and continued fulfilling his role as the other's... more>> militry advisor and protector.

From their first meeting, MC and ML had an equal standing, fighting alongside each other, making plans, striving towards a goal, arguing; secretly hoping to share their lifes together yet being caught up in a clash of personalities, constant warfare and an old conspiracy. This makes their rebirth much more interesting, as both abandon old plans and focus on that which was lost to them previously -- family, for one; love, for the other. ML's approach is soft and careful yet persistent (he wins the heart via the magic of food and cats).

Also featuring a cat and a hungry ghost pet; the latter being a fantastic, lovable sidekick with an actual personality, being both entertaining and useful for plot advancement. <<less

So the plot is...

ML was the emperor and MC was his Left Protector. MC sacrificed his life in order to help ML ascend the throne or become the emperor.

Then, MC got reborn. He doesn't want to sacrifice his life for ML anymore so he tries his best to avoid ML. However, ML finds ways to have a connection or to "coincidentally" go the same way as MC because ML is actually also reborn and he loves MC.

... more>> It's the usual reborn, mini-crematorium kind of plot.

However what I dislike is the misunderstanding that caused the crack in their relationship in the last life.

SPOILER:

So it turns out that ML loves MC and ML went to MC's father to propose marriage. The father said to wait 5 years and ML must prove he is worthy of MC.

MC had no idea about this. However, he was already ML's left protector by this time.

MC's father becomes sick. ML couldn't wait 5 years anymore so he sent a letter to MC proposing marriage.

However, MC's stepbrother finds out about this and he twists the facts.

He tells MC that it's him that ML proposes to. And the stepbrother also tells ML that MC rejected his proposal.

That caused the rift in their relationship. MC starts distancing himself from ML (which ML thought was because of his proposal) and they started having fights about war plans and stuff. Eventually, MC dies in battle.

I just dislike this misunderstanding so much because it feels forced.

As another reader said —- who proposes this way? Why not actually talk to the person?

It's just crazy to me that ML didn't personally talked to MC about this and MC didn't ask ML about his relationship with his brother.

Anyhooo, the way the misunderstanding was written just feels kinda forced to me and this goes on for like 1/3 of the story so it's an irritating for me and I won't be finishing this story <<less

I thought I would like this but I really don't. I think I actually like the two main characters, especially the ml. And I don't think it's unreasonable that they never talked about the engagement like another reviewer. This was set in an environment where marriage was mostly discussed between parents and matchmaker, and the actual person might not be in direct communication. That's just the way it was. Though I guess a person should trust their judgement and rumor more. I feel like the author has to force the... more>> plot to make the otherwise arrogant and confident MC feel like he misread the love interest.

What I really couldn't stand was how the relationship worked out after the MC pretty much already could guess what happened. He knows he was tricked, but still won't try to reconcile despite him actually liking the ml. The only conceivable reason seems to be that the author needs to make the story longer. It makes no sense and I don't buy it and I don't want to read it. <<less

main characters → ★☆☆☆☆ (eh. Maybe they're just not my cup of tea.)

side characters → ★☆☆☆☆ (none of them are particularly compelling or fleshed-out enough to get me invested in them. If there's anybody who stands out, it's the gluttonous ghost alone)

plot → ★☆☆☆☆ (not really stimulating or exciting for me. Must have read it at the wrong place and the wrong time with the wrong mindset. Or it's just not my cup of tea. The reveal was underwhelming and I think more foreshadowing/a heavier hand towards the... more>> mystery villain could've made things feel more satisfying at the payoff.)

dynamic investment → ★☆☆☆☆ (not really particularly invested in their dynamic either. I don't like them + I'm not interested in them so I don't care about the pairing and whether they have a HE or not.)

pacing → ★★☆☆☆ (it's eh. I guess I feel like it dragged a bit after the wedding and the convalescing of their stickiness)

overall satisfaction: ★★☆☆☆ (it's just not for me, and I'm not particularly awed by how it's written, or its writing style, or any of the characters, or the plot they're all plopped in, or the world-building, so there's that, but it's not that bad, I don't hate it, I just don't care for it.) <<less

Translation quality leaves a lot of room for improvement...

A pretty simple story with not too much angst. Both MC and ML were rather childish, but MC also acknowledged this in the story, so... at least there's some awareness there. In terms of story/plot, there was nothing I hadn't read before, and the translation quality made it rather difficult to understand some parts.

This novel started off pretty interesting, but after 2/3 it just went downhill.

After (one of) the main plot point got resolved it started to feel like the author just didn't know what else to write so they stuffed our throat with constant s*x and cheap drama. All the character development just stopped since the main characters were too busy being constantly h**ny and having s*x anywhere anytime. I suffered through 10-15 chapters because I wanted to find out who the secret villain is but I just couldn't take it anymore... more>> so I dropped this novel.

I was really disappointed since I was quite invested in the plot but it turned out to be just a waste of time.

Spoilers for the resolved plot point:

Spoiler

MC kills his stepmother and ML kills the stepbrother.

[collapse]

Spoilers for what happens after:

Spoiler

They just have s*x. CONSTANTLY. In ML's house and courtyard, in a cave and in MC's place at his grandparents' mountain, with people outside their window/door. During the morning, day, afternoon, evening, night.

At one point MC gets attacked and almost dies, and what does he do immediately after being saved by ML? Of course he wants to have sex! And nevermind that throughout the novel it was said quite a few times that what he fears the most is dying. Guess the desire for s*x is greater than the fear of dying.

And literally the next day ML breaks off their engagement. Then you read a few chapters where poor little meow meow ML is just so sad and suffering so much because of the break-up QvQ. Maybe you shouldn't have broken up with your lover then? And of course MC is the one who cracks first and comes to him.

★ ★ ★ ★ ☆ — a story worthy of a higher rating. i've read stories from the 4's and 5's which can't even hold a candle to this novel. the writing isn't perfect but it's a smooth read. the characters are very human.

it starts off as an unabashed romance. idk if it's the translation but there's a flow to the narration that feels like the sway of flower blossoms along a breeze, softly guiding readers to keep watching the budding relationship bet. our two youngsters, xue huai (mc) and yun cuo (ml).

the two people clearly have lingering feelings for each other, but due to misunderstandings in their past life, MC is unwilling to get close to ml. and yet, he can't seem to completely get rid of this young man. his past life comes to haunt him, details that he hadn't noticed before are slowly being unraveled like pushing off the wool that had been put over his eyes.

his stepmother and stepbrother could've caused his and his father's death and the huge gap that made him and ML drift apart later on. the ML might've loved him this whole time, but the MC continues with his life despite this. he aims to cultivate properly so that he can protect his family; he wants to inherit his family's business and the ML is the same. he wants to learn medicine instead, wanting to heal. he is bolder in pursuing the MC and stops hiding how he truly feels for him, a mistake that he'd made in his youth.

the MC and ML eventually get back together. they have their fights, but what really grabs you is the war. finally having the mystery person after our little immortal's life gradually be revealed, and the closer we get to the two's marriage, the more interesting the novel becomes.

so you couldn't imagine my disappointment when the villain was finally revealed and that the story didn't even end at their marriage!

Spoiler

MC is clever. while he is cautious and careful, he isn't a pushover and knows to strike first against those who wronged him. throughout the story, he grows from wanting to avoid people to taking action against those who are hostile to him and.. being kinder to the ML (even if reluctantly or more subconsciously than on purpose). I like him. he has a strong character. despite only being about 26 years old, his mind is very clear, but he also doesn't claim to be perfect.

ML is.. adorable. he's a refreshing love interest. he genuinely wants the MC to be happy while longing for him. I admit, he's childish but it's usually in endearing way. at first, he doesn't outright say that he wants to be with the MC, but it doesn't take very long until he comes clean about his feelings. like the MC, he has a character that keeps moving forward.

what I like about the main couple is how they don't stay where they are. they stay true to the traits assigned to their characters in writing and have actions that align with that rather than a rigid way of behaving. they always react to their environment so I'm not just reading variations of one scenario like "MC has a suitor, ML gets jealous and beats them up without reason, rinse and repeat." no. these two are proactive in their own lives. if they want something, they go for it. what I find particularly pleasing is how they're like that but not in a mere dominating and unreasonable way. they always have measure, have logic and reasoning behind their actions, and they respond beyond just a trope that they're supposed to embody. in fact, I don't think either of them necessarily have a bl trope applied to them. they're such unique individuals for characters from a webnovel. I have to give props to that.

i had a good time reading the face slapping against the mc's stepfamily. it's rare to have a faceslapping incident that could be as cathartic without being over the top. other characters like the ml's friends gradually stop popping out. I'm glad the mc's father could have more screentime as he and the MC become closer.

might I add, it's sweet that the MC and ML are so immature despite their age and how they have their own grievances.

i was sorely disappointed by the villain. in my opinion, the mystery behind his character was built up so much but when he was just revealed to be... some unrelated person that the MC didn't even have much interaction with, my expectations weren't met. so.. he just got obsessed with the MC and that's it? "is it someone I hang out with a lot" "yes" but the villain constantly masks himself as background characters that MC barely interacts with lol. he wasn't interesting, didn't have any depth to him. he just feels like some weirdo who happened to cultivate with a bit more focus and time. idk, he's a lunatic, but not an interesting one. it was pretty funny though when he told MC that his daoist partner would be able to show him all the seasons or something and he did that before he died. and then, the ML literally does that but not as an illusion. instead, he can actually control nature. the guy tried to set himself up as the one and flopped while ML casually fulfilled the prophecy himself lmfaooo

this novel had its ups and downs. I think the flow was good. the story was engaging enough. there's not much to say about it, but you can see the heart put into it. I feel like if it completely rounded itself out by putting more emphasis on the people who were reborn, the wedding, and the war, this would be better. but otherwise, it was a good read.

I don't think this is a bad story, it didn't feel dragged out, especially for the length.

however, I do not know if it's bcs I haven't read many xianxia/xuanhuan, but it is a little hard to understand at times, it's just the small details that I like to harp on at times LOL, further down the line, I may end up understanding or just forgetting it altogether. There was a part where I was like, wasn't it the other person who did it? Only to have the author clarify further... more>> down in the novel that the other person told them, why it wasn't clarified earlier is unknown to me but yeah.

I think the leads are suited together, they had problems because both were stubborn and did not communicate well, however after rebirth, the MC learned to communicate and it wasn't as if he was the only one putting in the work, the ML had his problems and the MC was just more compassionate and understanding and willing to change. I would say it is mutual doting so it is cute.

not really a spoiler but,
Spoiler

I really wanted to know what the gluttonous ghost looked like bcs half way through, I decided to google it and it low-key looked like those ugly titans from aot and I kept imagining a dog version of it throughout and it isn't good bcs the gluttonous ghost actions were lowkey cute HAHAHHA. It wasn't until I think 60-ish that the translator said the author did say the gluttonous ghost had a prototype and had it on their weibo but the account was deleted. :')

[collapse]

on the plot, I do think that if they had communicated, then none of this would've evolved the way it did, so communicate guys! I enjoyed moments when the leads interacted, it was cute and showed them being spoiled by the other. The ML truly only has eyes on the MC and vice versa. I do not think that the engagement part could've been solved by communication though, bcs this was a matter between mc's father and ml. What happened afterwards was just a culmination of missed opportunities to communicate and thus not doing it but rather 'taking it out' on the other via actions, tbh it was understandable but I do think that's the problem which the story that is being told, shows how they are fixing it and understanding the other more.

the overarching plotline is quite simple and I don't have anything bad to say about it.
Spoiler

I did feel shocked that there were more than 2 people who got rebirthed. the other mc's father and the villain.

[collapse]

I would say that the characters are at the very least, self-aware and doesn't feel entitled. I do like them and I feel for them, I didn't cry but teared up towards the end. :') although I said it was a good length, I did wish we were given their wedding bcs it was talked about quite abit and was disappointed that we did not cover it but it is what it is. For what its worth, it was a good and short read. <<less
