The shou fell in love with the gong at first sight, but alas, the gong is both straight and oblivious—so the shou suffers in silence.

The shou is clearly a small, innocent rabbit, but the gong keeps mistaking him for a cold-hearted person—so the shou suffers in silence.

The shou hasn’t done anything, yet he’s falsely accused of being a spy for the demonic sect—so the shou suffers in silence.

But then again, this small rabbit truly is ruthless in his methods.

He wants to make the gong regret for a lifetime, feel guilty for a lifetime, and suffer for a lifetime.

And all it will take is one letter…

Hello there Eexeee the translator for this novel.

Here is some thoughts of mine while translating this book 😮‍💨

Spoiler

Translator's Notes:

Finally, it has ended. Even though it is not a Happy Ending (HE), at least it leaves some space for imagination. Such a short story, but it truly takes you on an emotional rollercoaster. When I first started reading this, I thought it would be a lighthearted, fluffy, and cute type of story. But the ending really caught me off guard. I don't want to be the only one feeling sad, so I decided to translate this and let all of you feel sad as well 😏.

This novel starts off deceptively simple, drawing you in with its seemingly light and carefree tone. The characters, especially Bai Jinshu and Ye Lihen, are so well-written that you can’t help but get attached to them. What begins as a story of camaraderie and playful banter quickly takes a dark turn, unraveling layers of hidden emotions, betrayals, and misunderstandings. The unexpected depth of their relationship is what makes this novel so impactful.

Bai Jinshu’s internal struggle, from believing he knows Ye Lihen to doubting everything, adds a sense of tension that keeps the reader hooked. Even though Ye Lihen may seem distant and mysterious at first, his vulnerability and pride slowly reveal themselves in the most heartbreaking ways. The final chapters are filled with emotional weight as everything falls into place, leading to an ending that is both painful and bittersweet.

For those of you who love open-ended conclusions, this story provides just enough room for you to imagine what could happen next. Maybe Bai Jinshu will find Ye Lihen someday, maybe they will reconcile. Or maybe, they will continue to exist separately, carrying their memories of one another in different directions. The beauty of this story is that it lets you choose how to continue their journey in your mind.

Thank you for reading along with me, and I hope this translation helps you experience the same emotional ride that I went through.

This is so good I genuinely sobbed. Yeah, the writing is beautiful, however that wasn't the reason. It's because I could fully understand every ounce of pain and every one of Lihen's thoughts.
Spoiler

Including the end. I understand his decision, and his feelings then; I would've agreed with it. My heart was broken by the end, and all I feel is hatred towards Bai Jinshu and his martial Uncle. Why had they never thought of anyone else? Can nobody else feel pain? I both can and can't understand them. I was bitter when they were given a chance in the epilogue; I would've preferred them to regret forever, but I've also come to know Ye Lihen's character.

[collapse]
So, Lihen, be happy.

But yeah, I sobbed violently. Anyway, 10/10 for the main story, 8/10 for the epilogue but it's out of my personal hatred for them. Taking that out of account, the epilogue actually does tie the story back together so it's really not a demerit and thus would potentially remain a 10/10. Again, just due to my personal feelings. If you also want to remain sad like me and see it through with your own similarly bitter heart, then stop at the end of the story- don't read the epilogue.

What many other cultivation regret novels attempt to do in 100 or more chapters this story achieves in just 9. While it may be lacking in many regards, I still believe it's among the better of its kind. It's so short I'd say that if you're even a little curious you should give it a shot. If you're not a fan of suffering/regret stories don't worry, this avoids the usual obsession authors have with writing chapter after chapter about the character's pain and misery. Pleasantly, it also avoids a lot... more>> of other tropes. For once, I was able to read a story set in the world of Chinese cultivation without being dragged through the same repetitive magical subspace, sect entrance exam, auction house, and secret realm plots. The relationship between the leads is also tastefully written. I'm tired of authors using base physical attraction as the foundation of the relationship between protagonists and failing to develop it beyond that. So it's also refreshing to find that the mutual interest Bai Jinshu and Ye Lihen have for each other is never reduced to just physical attraction.

About the epilogue.

Spoiler

Honestly, the epilogue drags the story down, but I'm going to give the author the benefit of the doubt and assume they were probably pressured to write it. It wouldn't be the first time an author had to extend the possibility of something more than a sad ending to childish and extreme readers. Bai Jinshu joining a monastery to fulfill Ye Lihen's wish for him to regret for a lifetime seems superficial and performative. That said, it's in character for Bai Jinshu. After all, what else could you expect from him? Do you think the coward who couldn't bear to watch an assassin be tortured, but was fine to have his first (and last) intimate encounter with Ye Lihen be a body search would hunt down Lin Ling or her family? No way. Anyway the epilogue basically undoes all the work the author put into their story. To have Ye Lihen possibly alive and notify his father who tortured him without evidence and his crush who doubted and betrayed him makes about as much sense as Ye Lihen's final message not being a blank piece of silk but one that reads "I hate you, you meanies!". Jiang Chen and Bai Jinshu are supposed to suffer the eternal torment of "what ifs?". What if Renwang sect had waited until a full investigation was conducted? Would Mo Feixiao have been able to reveal the truth in time? What if Jiang Chen hadn't pressed Ye Lihen's Qu Chi acupoint? Would he have been able to survive long enough for them to excavate the cave he was trapped in? What if Bai Jinshu didn't lie about the cave having an exit? Did Ye Lihen choose that cave because he believed Bai Jinshu's lie? These doubts should prick at their conscience until they breathe their last breaths. Creating the possibility that Ye Lihen survived offers hope to two characters who don't deserve it. I advise you to pretend the epilogue doesn't exist.

Why is this so poorly rated, why?! It is amazing! Like the translator says, it starts out very cute and you think it'll be a short lighthearted mystery. It's only 2 of those 3 things. The mystery gets solved through exposition, but it's so interesting connecting the dots with the ML that this doesn't even matter. I was heart broken during the reveal - it was done so well we really get a glimpse into what the ML was feeling as he realized what actually happened.

Poor MC. He comes across... more>> as almost illogically mysterious at first, but during the reveal his actions all suddenly make sense.

While this novel doesn't feel short in the amount of world building and character development that happens, it is a short story in the sense that much is still left up to the reader's imagination.

Spoiler

In addition to the open ending (which will honestly probably be a happy one - I get the sense that the MC purposely waited 3 years because the ML had at one point asked if he was able to wait 3 years to confirm their feelings). I bet the MC is being his usual, adorably petty self and turning the ml's words against him.

However, there's a sadder side to the mc's story. It was clear there was a fight between his sect and the ml's, and that many in the "demonic" sect were killed. The ml's uncle was active in this fight, and the mc's mother (his secret love) died. I wonder if she died in the fight, indirectly or directly due to the uncle, and if there was more to her "betrayal". Perhaps she left due to worry about her child, because she was too high up in the sect, or some other uncommunicated misunderstanding. It almost feels like her and the uncle's love is the warning of what could happen if the MC and ML let their pride keep them apart (which the ML obviously won't let happen)

[collapse]

I think the moral of the story is to not jump to conclusions. Don't condemn someone until you have all the facts. And if you are wrong, or have messed up your loving relationship for whatever reason, apologize and don't let the relatively insignificant "reasons" prevent you from having a partner who is otherwise a great partner. <<less

it has a surprisingly 'low' score. Tho I'd prob give it a 4, wanna boost it ykyk HAHAHA. it's short but it felt long. I did find myself thinking, damn I want more but understood that it was also a decent way to end it as it left enough for imagination.

the story was simple but had a dash of complexity or rather the characters felt 'alive'.

I enjoyed the main characters' banter, I loved it. I could feel their compatibility a screen away LOL.

reading the synopsis already gave me a 'sad' type of feel so when I cried, I wasn't shocked but I was shocked by how much it affected me.

tbh, the story itself could've been like a prologue or a prequel to a wife chasing crematorium LOLOL and I'm a sucker for those. But I probably wouldn't be as tough on the ML for this novel than the rest bcs I do understand his choices. It's reasonable.

all in all, I enjoyed it. ◡̈
Spoiler

its a fairly simple plot but I did get baited LOL. There was also something that I didn't expect, that the shou was possibly the gong's martial uncle's child.

Short but with good depth and complexity. The plausible different perspectives built upon the little details that were scattered throughout sold it.

It's a novel that makes me feel conflicted things (in a good way). Their actions are justifiable, but it's a very 'what could have been kind' of feeling that I'm left with. The epilogue was a fitting end to the unspoken layered thing they had going on (YLH, such a cute young softie), but I do wish this were all a prologue to a longer story of their budding... more>> romance and the ongoing conflicts in the jianghu.

Little blips of emotion that I wouldn't expect to feel for such a short story.

Worth the read, might reread. <<less

I sobbed reading this at 4 a.m.

It is a good short story if you like open endings with a dose of tragedy and mystery.

Plot-wise it is a cliche storyline, an MC and his new friend he picked up on his travel. An old grudge, a deceptive friend, that one dude who bets way too much, a secret cave maze, and a case of is it really the evil sect doing this evil thing?

However, it was well-written (given the length of the story). Though I do think the author could elongate... more>> the last chapter and the extra.
Spoiler

I want to know how Ye Lihen managed to escape from his coffin. Can you imagine if it's the fifth brother helping him out because he lost a bet?

[collapse]

The extra does help stop the tears, but I would personally have made them regret for at least 15 years.
Spoiler

Ye Lihen was 15 when he "died". Honestly Uncle Jiang and Bai Jinshu should suffer more for not even listening to the YLH when he was trying to explain, torturing him and deceiving him.

5/5 would read again. <<less

Story so good I can't read anything else cause they feels bland compared to this.

Extremely beautifully written story. Although the title is kind of old fashioned and not eye catching enough, the story itself is very heart-wrenching. Not gonna lie, this type of plot is a little bit cliche and simple, but the way it was unfolded would pull your attention to finish it. And because it was a short story, it's not long-winded and avoid the reader feeling bored.

Plot wise? It was quite expected and nothing new but still... more>> fun. Character wise? Very good, none of them was frustrating because you could understand their logic.

I've read at least 30 short novels here since the start of my holiday and this story is by far my favorite one (it's also because my love for clichés)

If any of you guys know other novel written by the same writer please tell me! Thanks in advance! <<less

It's a well written concise tragic story. The ending had me feeling like this would be a great prequel for an amazing wuxia danmei novel where ye lihen and bai jinshu finally get their #happyending. however I don't mind the ending at all and I don't hate the fact that there is no sequel. I actually like stories with ambiguous and open endings that allow the audience to craft their own ideas about what would happen post-narrative.

Spoiler

Maybe because I also tend to sometimes like blatant/in your face romance in danmei I would have wanted ylh and bjs's relationship to become deeper, more romantic before the poignant arc. but I doubt the ending for bjs would have hit the same. because if he was also already romantically involved with ylh by the time they start to suspect him and hurt him, and lead to his "death".... bjs wouldn't have to deal with the pain of yearning for what he could have had...i liked this... more tragic danmei please!

I absolutely loved this

It was a short and quick read but, damn did it have me more emotionally invested than so many other 100+ chapter novels. I loved the characters and setting so much.

Definitely will come back to reread!

Very interesting; can't say I've read a story like this. Packed a lot of action and intrigue into a short story. I wonder if the lower ratings are because of the emotions that this story can bring out. I felt a lot of things after reading this.
