Very emotionally honest and nuanced to the point where I wonder if the author has gone through a divorce and then years of unpacking what happened in therapy.

I enjoy the creative structure the narrative has taken: it is non-linear, so we are getting both the present day, adult conflict, and the past events which serve as their root cause at the same time, without having to sit through hundreds of chapters of them as children to get to the juicy bit, which is resolved in an instant (*cough*"I am trying... more>> to divorce my villainous husband, but we have a child"*cough*)

We also get the events from different perspectives, showcasing how far apart the couple actually is.

The "Isekai" part is handled creatively: all of the people are full members of their world, but dream of a "book" which shows them possible futures in the form of a narrative. Interestingly, each person has a different book, implying both that everyone is the main character of at least someone's story, and that the universe is taking an active influence. These dream books can also play out alternative narratives and "what if?" scenarios.

At its essence, this story is about people protecting themselves, and the disastrous harm which happens when it stops being self interest or self preservation, and starts being selfishness. And how ignoring a problem simply makes it grow.

Each of the characters has a selfish little dream they carefully guard and protect just for themselves:

Leila:
Spoiler

Leila wants to have her cake and eat it too. She wants her big, epic romance with her husband, Frederick, but she wants her long time best friends to always be there for her, too. She wants nothing to change and for everyone to be in a perpetual state of youthful happiness.

Leila starts harming others when she ignores and avoids Gerard because his confession of love means things need to change, and she wants to live in denial that nothing will ever change. She inadvertently strings him along and causes him significant anguish by her lack of answer, and by her forcing him to play act at being nothing but friends. Her obsession with keeping all of her friends together exactly the same also hurt Chloe, because Leila prioritized her own selfish desires to keep them all close over her friend's well-being and happiness, treating Chloe like a thing, not a person.

Leila's obsession with an idealized, unchanging past does significant harm on her present.

[collapse]

Chloe:
Spoiler

Chloe desperately wants to be loved for being an "equal". She is surrounded by amazing people: one sister is an Empress, the other a genius artist, her best friend is the "main character", and the men are likewise extraordinary. Chloe, calm, gracious, Chloe, wants at least her husband to view her as being on-par with these amazing women, and love her like she is his and their equal. She does not want to be pitied or doted on: she wants their respect, and to stand shoulder to shoulder with them all and be included as a full member of the in crowd, not as their cheerleader, secretary, or support system.

She starts harming others when her desire to protect herself causes her to flee rather than discuss how hurt she is, and to hide her insecurities, which she does with many characters besides Gerard. She so desperately wants Gerard to say he loves her first, and for him to make the romantic efforts for her which she saw him make towards Leila, that she will not make the first move, and has spent 8 years in stasis, waiting behind the screen she shows others, and staying only on the surface of her emotions like a water bug and avoiding going any deeper.

She does not allow herself to do things she enjoys, because she is afraid she will not measure up to someone else who can do that same thing better, then despises herself for it and hates them for making her feel this way.

She has become so used to hiding her wants and worries that she doesn't know how to communicate anymore, and people cannot see her honest self, and, in turn, she cannot see theirs. They don't know she has begun to resent them, or that she has begun to twist and warp, making her interpret their gestures in negative lights. She doesn't tell people when there is something broken to fix, so they never fix things, and her resentment grows that they did not notice and have not come to save her.

[collapse]

Gerard:
Spoiler

Gerard wants the beautiful surface with none of the messy underside: all the benefits without the costs, as he always, always, always looks in control and nothing touches his bottom line. He wants to be loved, and feel safe and secure. He wants to believe everything is perfect and comfortable and he's fixed. He doesn't want to be hurt again, and he doesn't want to deal with mess or unpleasant emotions, so he remains polite and amiable, always.

Gerard harms others when this translates to him wanting to receive all the love, without having to do the messy, ugly work. He is happy to sit back and be unconditionally adored by Chloe, and thinks being polite and pleasant back is enough. His refusal to delve into the mess of human emotions means he never faces his significant childhood traumas and therefore never resolves them, becoming constipated with his issues until his sh*t leaks onto others. His desire to never be harmed again means that, after he tried the big romantic thing once with Leila, he won't try again with Chloe, and doesn't realize how badly he hurts his wife when she compares his treatment between the two. He prioritizes maintaining his calm over all else, causing him to shut down or be dismissive and patronizing if people are not interacting in the exact way he is most comfortable with.

[collapse]

They are all sad, twitchy, flawed, little squirrels, hoarding their little acorns and hoping the others won't steal them, while desperately wanting someone to come over and share, which they will never do themselves.

Definitely not for everyone. Each character is both good and bad, likable and dislikable. There are many flaws, and you will vacillate between identifying with and being frustrated by each and every one of them. Not a simple fluff read. Maybe give it a chance when you're feeling nostalgic remorse over a failed relationship and want to hash out what went wrong. Not a good choice when you want clear good vs. Bad and simple resolutions. <<less

This story can basically be summed up as self-inflicted suffering.

Yes, the friend should not have asked ML to marry her but the ML didn't have to do it. And the FL definitely didn't have to accept his proposal. It's not like the friend held them at gunpoint and forced them to get married. At the end of the day the two of them made their own choices and the friend shouldn't be held responsible for the results. The FL in particular married a man whom, she clearly knew was in... more>> love with someone else. I honestly don't feel much sympathy for her. She's one of the weakest characters I've ever come across. She refuses to speak out when she is wronged then resents the fact that others don't notice she has been wronged. And is always ready to blame anyone but herself for everything. I have no interest in continuing to read this. <<less

This is a pretty good novel, especially for people who love reading something on the actual marriage-based problem novels

It's the novel between the married 2nd male lead and the side/extra character after the novel is over a lot of things were not spoken about and started to get clear out.

This is my absolute favorite web novel right now, and I've read a lot. I am a fan of regretful male leads (like yeah dude, you better f*cking cry) and this is at the top of my list. It portrays the characters well and more realistically than other series. Also, the female lead isn't a total pushover that's willing to stay with an unchanging piece of sh*t.

It is really well written and the juicy bits are just the right length; sometimes authors don't get the regret bit right but this... more>> one has just enough groveling that it's satisfying. AND IT'S TRANSLATED SO WELL; it doesn't matter if it's written well if none of the grammar makes sense but the translators did a great job on this. They also update frequently which is a cherry on top.

The portrayal of the misunderstandings is spot on; not too much drudgery or cliché but it feels like a legit miscommunication.

You can actually root for the characters to end up together without feeling like you're encouraging a toxic relationship (eww). There is so much room for character growth because the characters aren't flat.

I really recommend this series because it's well written... and did I mention that he's crying on his knees. Just saying.

P.S. Thank you so much translators for doing such a good job!

Edit: The series is still good but the updates are a lot less frequent which is sad : (

Still highly recommend. <<less

I'm an angst wh*re so I dove headfirst in this novel knowing full well how sad it is and I, quite ironically, enjoyed it and ended up binging all 45 chapters (at the time of writing this) in one night. It reminds me of the Unwelcome Guests of House Fildette, without the cheating and political scheming. The kind of story where you can't help but hate the situation, and not the characters. Plus points cause ML isn't an abusive/cheating piece of shit, ... more>>

although it is spoiled that in a different timeline, he was neglectful to her which is 🤮 so that's a big f*cking minus,

and both the leads just repressed their feelings because of trauma. But that being said, I can see why this novel is lowly rated. It's because only baddies can handle such a tragic storyline (jk).

Also, to those a**holes who sh*t on Leila for being a white lotus, she's not even bad fr??? She's naively selfish but she's good at heart, she was friendly and nice to Gerard, it was him who took her words romantically when she meant them platonically. Y'all are just hating on her cause she's a woman, but cream your pants when a man does the same thing like stfu. <<less

It's a disappointing story. How difficult are these people having to talk? Everything, absolutely EVERYTHING could have been resolved with a conversation. FL has an absurd inferiority complex and this is reflected in her actions, which are s*upid and childish. It's not the guy's fault if the voices in her head said he was still in love with his friend when his actions clearly said otherwise.

The amount of hatred the FL is having goes to show how alot of people are gaslighting feelings nowadays. Its not like she never tried its just she was always the receiving end of pain whether from gerard layla or her sister.

Even transmigrated FLs from other novels have a hard time accepting they can change their fate, how much more for chloe whos just an extra and just simply chose to love the second male lead she knows she wasn’t supposed to end up with?

Imagine living thinking and enduring she’s... more>> a substitute but then finally confirmed it? Give the woman a break. That feeling will break any woman. Especially her whos living in the shadow all her life.

And this story needs higher rating, whats with the people giving low rating when they haven’t even finish 1/4 if the story?

And this one comment from someone needs to be posted her for all you talking sht on FL.

Spoiler

Living as Chloe is a f*cking pain and suffering. Shes very genuine but naive and prone to be a martyr because thats how she is raised alongside her "perfect" sister.

Also let me tell you in advance that I acknowledge how sh*t Chloe is in dealing with stress and anger. She does not speak and keep spiralling down more and more into negativity, once she got invalidated by the one has beef with, she will ran miles away not wanting to talk about it anymore and just cry about it blamming herself and then everyone eleses.

Everyone in this story uses Chloe for their own convenience, except for Herace, (this will be a healing/comfort novel if she were to marry him instead lol).

Layla genuinely happy Chloe became her friends, but Layla uses her as she see fits, she never sacrifice anything for Chloe, she uses her, to keep Gerard around and at the same time keeps him away from her time with Derrick. She spouts so many hurtful sh*t towards Chloe that made even my stomach churns. She has ppd sure, but her actions of being greedy and wanting everything and everyone to love and stays with her always, hurts basically everyone including derrick imho.

Cathrine... Man... Idk what to say about her, she cares about Chloe but she also uses her and put her down as she sees fits. She is very demanding and hates it when Chloe do something rebellious against her will. She hates both gerard and layla because the rumour surrounding them which I think its fair. But restricting Chloe circle of friend just isnt it. She plagiarized Chloe's painting after shitting on it, and gained praises from her plagiarized painting, and even have the audacity to berates Chloe for justifiably angry about it. She never really apologizes genuinely, took her pride on a stride and run with it and still has even more of the audacity to control Chloe relationship again.

Tbh at first I quite like both Layla and Cathrine but their flaws outweigh the goods.

Gerard... Lmao... The confused, chaotic, mad obsessed, pathetic low EQ of a man. I said he is pathetic because how obsessed he was with Layla, he repeatedly stalks her, isolate her, and insisting her into marrying him, and how petty he is for hating Chloe for her eye color (which he later loves, I know). This whole arc of his past is pure torture to read

Gerard was a sad sad ssad little b*tch, who hates everything except Layla, he has shitty past, and shitty family, but he was also so edgy and annoyingly self centered, I just cant with the past him.

After being heart broken repeatedly by Layla, he find comforts in Chloe, he also uses Chloe for his own convenience to get more information about Layla, and to make his Layla stalking (a hyperbole) daily activity easier. At one time he even make Chloe drunk to make her spill something about Layla but Chloe being a good friend that she is to both of them, keep her mouth shut. I personally find this part really hillarious.

He grew to like Chloe, sure. He knew how genuine she is, the length that Chloe has done for him. And after the war, he saw Layla who doesnt even care as much as half of how Chloe did. Then... His illusion of Layla is finally broken I guess?

But here is the thing about the letter which cause all of this chaotic shit. If he replied with the feeling he was annoyed by Layla and angry with her (his own words not mine), why tf he complied with her request so timidly in the letter, like tf. Just tore that letter and burn it and tell Layla to mind her own f*cking business, because thats how he said he trully felt.

Even when Chloe talk it out with Layla, Layla acted as if, Gerard did marry Chloe because of her request which crushed Chloe completely, OF COURSE THIS THE AFTERMATH OF YOUR REPLY GERARD, OF COUUURSEEE.

I think the betrayals that Chloe felt is 100% justified. Even after Gerard apologize in the carriage when Chloe threw his response to layla (? Or was it laylas letter? It wasnt clear). He just says he is sorry because he was angry at layla... (seriously gerard?)

b*tch?! Doesnt that mean you agree that you married her out of spite

I think it is very fair for Chloe to not be able to accept this apology right away. Also her anger has festered because he dismissed her before when she wanted to talk it out.

Idk man nobody except Abel is truly on her side. Nobody ever genuinely apologize and tell Chloe they love her, and thankful for what she has done (sure Gerard feels this way but he never say it out loud). Nobody ever compensate for her benefits, it is always her, and her only who has to compensate for her loved ones, forgive and sacrifice her feelings for her loved ones.

Also the future thing? I dont hate Chloe since the dream is only prophetic (it could be a bad dream too since gerard has a lot of them when he was anxious). and we dont know how f*ck up the things that did not shown have influence her. This is like the mix of what happened to Bianca's from Marriage of Convenience and the MC from My dear Aster. And most ppl forgives them for it. So why not Chloe? she wasnt even the one who dreams it, and the current Chloe does not even thought about it.

Unlike the usual Korean novels, even if the plot is cliche but the writing is so beautifully done that you are hooked. I don't know if it's the author or translator or both.

Any good plot can be badly written. Any ordinary story can be well written.

This is a ordinary story, beautifully written that it is captivating. Characters are believable. Their actions make sense once you read the flashbacks.

The annoying saints, priests and magic are thankfully absent. Even if the novel take place in a novel, the character doesn't try to... more>> intervene. So it's not irritating.

If you read without much expectations and judgements, its worth spending a weekend.

Spoiler

only plot hole I found is that ML doesn't seem to Horrace in the Initial chapters but in the flashbacks, he knows him very well. If the author or translator notes this, I don't think its too late to change. Just pointed out.

TL;DR if you don't like angst I do not recommend, however if your okay with it, it's soooo good and you should definitely give it a shot!

I don't know how to describe or recommend this novel other than saying that it is just really compelling. I have the attention span of a gerbil, I lose interest in things real quick and have a tendency to drag out reading novels. However I read up to chapter 43 in one day, and I'm already ready for more. It just hooks you in.

Disclaimer:... more>> Okay normally I like to have finished or read at minimum half of a novel before I rate something but seeing the low rating is criminal. I think some people don't like angst, and thus rated it low. This novel is really good and the translator is amazing. Will update my review later <<less

What drew me into this one was the second ML trope, and I knew it would be full of bitterness and misunderstandings. I personally loved all the angst in this one! The level of drama is at that of a shitty soap opera, but MCs feelings and experiences are written so wonderfully that I rly felt for her and wanted to give her a big hug. I liked how the tension was played out until eventually we learn MLs true feelings, yet it feels too late to be resolved. Y'all... more>> are gonna hate Leila like she's so unnecessary in every scene and I just wish she'd f off so the MC and ML can finally talk in peace.

A lot of ppl are bashing on MC for not talking about her insecurities w ML in the beginning, but I feel like all the events that happened in the story were necessary for ML to truly understand how deeply he's messed up and scarred her. Even if MC outright asked ML if he loves her, hearing him reply w "yeah ofc!" is NOT gonna sound believable for a second, especially w all the history he has w Leila. After all, actions speak louder than words. MC just wants ML to finally prove his loyalty and not disappoint her for once. <<less

It's the first novel that I've read so far. I love how the story was flowing, the main point was Chloe, she was a real 'person' with a lot of insecurities, she wasn't the perfect FL - she was driven [by his mistakes] to create that 'misunderstanding' and he pretend to be perfect and unapproachable for her.

Spoiler

He was completly in love with Leila at first, however he started to notice Chloe by the time they spent togheter - He was alrealy going to propose to her before Leila send that letter to him - He thought that Leila was direspectful by sending him that mensage (SO WHY DIDN'T HE PUT ON FLAME THAT??)

[collapse]

The ML is kind of boring, like he didn't do the right thing when he had the chance, didn't say the words when she needed to hear them.

Spoiler

He wanted to be the best husband of all the fairy tail for her, didn't want another child with her afraid that she'd suffer from childbirth again (But he didn't say anything to her) - I know that he didn't receive the love and didn't know how to give it but??

[collapse]

Their surroundings was like OK, they din't do anything at all

Spoiler

Leila is ridicoulous, so self-centred, like all she was worrying was about herself all the time, like "how could they stopped to love her like they did before?" - I loved how the ML (after so many years) put a limit on her. Chloe's sister was an important caracther, but the main story didn't need that arc, like the feeling of betrayal, how trust each other again, was enough

[collapse]

I think that everyone should give an opportunity to this story <<less

ah honestly at first I liked the angst when Chloe found out about the letter and started questioning her whole marriage with Gerard. ... more>>
Spoiler

I understand how the letter can be misunderstood esp knowing that Chloe is actually an outsider who knows the supposed futures of the main characters to some extent. I think Chloe acted appropriately for someone in her place by feeling guilt over making major changes to the story and feeling anxious to face the consequences of having done so

[collapse]
.

However it is a bit frustrating seeing both Chloe and Gerard going in circles by not communicating how they truly feel and then end up hurting themselves and the other person. For one, Chloe can't seem to accept the possibility that Gerard has moved on from his feelings for Leila. She just keeps dismissing the counterarguments of both Gerard and Leila and can't help but keep to herself. It doesn't help that Gerard doesn't directly profess his love and concerns for Chloe but the same goes for Chloe. Both of them also have low self esteem, thinking that neither of them deserve to be with the other person (and that leaves us where?? 😭).

I think the biggest gap here is that Gerard and Leila don't see the letter as of much importance as Chloe who is reminded again of her feeling of regret and anxiety over having interfered with the lives of the people in this story. While the other two are trying to clear up the misunderstanding, Chloe's mind is in panic and isolation mode and neither Gerard nor Leila actually know the real reason why...

On another note, I feel bad for Leila who I think genuinely wants to keep save her friendship with Chloe and Gerard. It's just that the couple she's dealing with is so stubborn. I've read some comments that find her annoying but I can tolerate her actions and simply see it as a person simply wanting to reason with another friend. <<less

This is really different from what I used to read. But nonetheless I like the change, the angst is just right, lots of misunderstanding but not the kind that will make you flip a table in frustration. It's the angsty kind. Overall I like it, the main problem is simply not being able to express their own feelings leading to misunderstanding.

First and foremost wonderful job from the translators and editors of this story. This review is in no way a reflection of the great efforts of the lovely staff that worked on this. This review is solely focused on the story itself.

That being said, what the fudge was that. I didn’t think I’d ever get plot fatigue but this story certainly proved me wrong. The last minute war conflict that seem to have been conjured up from nowhere felt so forced just for the sake of creating a climax. The... more>> characters exhausted me to no end and frankly there were some who didn’t even need to be there at all. It doesn’t seem like the author put any thought into the story with most plot points being half baked and contrived. I wanted so bad to quit but just needed to know the ending. In all honestly the last 30 chapters were skimmable. It didn’t add anything to the story and was absolutely unnecessary. Just glad it’s all over. <<less

this story def isn't for everyone esp if you don't like misunderstandings BUT I will say that this is written so well that it was hard to put down. I literally hate misunderstandings and was able to keep reading bc of how well the story pulled me in. The characters were so well thought out and even when you don't understand why they do what they do BOOM flashback that cures my soul and explains everything. I rlly need this story to finish bc im left with a cliffhanger but... more>> until then I def recommend this to those with an open mind when it comes to dragged on misunderstandings :3

abt Chloe

Spoiler

also love the fact that this story felt very real to me. It's not the typical stories where the FL is rlly strong and everyone is perfect. Chloe was very insecure and I was able to relate to her and understand where she was coming from.

[collapse]

abt gerard

Spoiler

idk I love this man LOL he means very well and he had so much growth and character development. He was mistaken on what love really is and was blinded by his abandonment issues. All I can say is that communication is key and it too a long way to get to where they are now

[collapse]

LOVE ABEL he's such a little cutie

Spoiler

lil opinion about leila bc there's a few diff views on her

at first I did hate her a bit bc of how selfish and clueless she was to her actions. Many times she would bu*t in where she wasn't needed and this led to so many of the problems for the main couple. However, I do think she genuinely just didn't know rather than ppl calling her a white lotus. She's def redeeming herself a bit near the end and im glad she is aware of her actions and is able to grow from her past actions

I find this novel to be very thought-provoking. It kept me interested until the last page.

The story is mostly well built and the biggest questions get answered. My only complaint would be that I would have liked to know where the book came from and why. But, to be fair, knowing that doesn't serve a purpose except quenching my curiosity. It doesn't affect the plot in the slightest.

The characters are VERY realistic, everyone is flawed in ways where it makes it easy to emphatise with their emotions and/or understand where... more>> they're coming from without being necessarily on their side.

That being said... I have to admit that this is the first story since I learned to read where I literally don't like anyone's personality, not even an extra.

My dislike goes on degrees though... I guess the MC is the one I would pick if I had to.

This fact didn't diminish my capacity to immerse myself in the work though. That's a testament to the author's quality.

The relationships between the characters are also realistic. Especially in the sense that they're all interconnected in a tangled mess because of a critical drought of communication and bravery to be honest, just like in real life's society.

While reading, one can either get frustrated/infuriated... or, try to understand why the author is so focused on showing the reader that there's branching points in life. And that those are where one can have options to act/feel differently in consequence, for a future that one can (at least) be satisfied with.

In general, I dislike when characters are forgiven in this genre. They either didn't do enough to warrant redemption or the actions are just too bad to even consider it, no matter how handsome/beautiful they're.

What was done here by everyone around the MC would be unrecyclable tr*sh territory. It's bearable on the ml's case though because he has a chance to REALLY understand how shitty he is and repent step by step for the rest of his life.

On that subject, the relationship between the FL and ML is as flawed as realistic. Add a kid to that mix and it's even more difficult to untangle because it adds reasons for the MC to feel the pull of complacency/giving up/holding on.

Basically she's everyone else's scapegoat/support since she was born, willingly or not. That obviously shaped her personality to who she is at the start of this story.

That being said... at least Abel was there for the MC, as limited as a kid can be. If not, I'm not sure how things could have gone for her without any kind of true support.

On that vein, I disagree with what others said about the other knight commander guy being support for the MC. If one puts attention as to why he gets rejected is clear to see why he also used her. That wasn't love so her rejection was totally justified.

I agree with other reviewers that unless the author or someone close enough experienced something similar... writing something as nuanced as this is basically impossible with just imagination, no matter how vast it may be.

As translation goes, I have no complaints. Though, sometimes there was too much chitchat in the notes.

The art of the cover is pretty, besides, it fits fl's and ml's personalities well. <<less

Just felt like saying that Chloe has to lie in the bed she made. Every problem she addresses was created by herself yet she refuses to take accountabilitu

She tells Gerard to act a certain way (respecting her boundaries for example), but this whole novel is her complaining the fact hes acting this way. Its honestly sad and pathetic. She misunderstands everything possible, refuses to communicate her insecurities and allows others to misunderstand her.

The novel itself is pretty good. But the name feels inappropriate. It feels like it should be called... more>> "insecure side character emotionally tortures her husband."

The letter spoilers:

Spoiler

The letter he recieved literally wasn't relevant at all to why he married Chloe. He was planning to marry her anyway.

The letter LITERALLY wasnt asking him to marry Chloe either. The intention of the letter was for Gerard to get over Leila and his response was agreeing to this intention.

Chloe, a trained noble in noble speak like them, shouldve been able to discern this intention if her head wasnt so far up-

MY FAVOURITE NOVEL EVER.

honestly this is my first review and I love how humanize the author makes the emotions we feel from both sides of characters. it shows that they are not merely a character in a book rather they feel very alive - that it feels I have connections with them. except for leila ofcourse

honestly, this novel took a mature perspectives on relationships. I loved it because probably it rhymes with me. how the characters think and act is just reasonable and the way of writing justify that... more>> - " I would probably did that too if I was her". I mean despite this genre of "misunderstanding" I quite liked it as it approaches how certain people have different views on things.

Spoiler

and I just love how the FL does not run away or try to divorce with the ML (that is usually what would other stories would do) instead she faces them that shows how strong she is. I love this kind of approach because well yeah irl you cant run away from your problems all the time.

also love how we got ML perspectives and his obsession towards fl. it feels real. like he doesnt love her just because she's "interesting". it shows how deep his love is. and I ALSO LOVE how he set boundaries with his ex crush. and acknowledge that the love he had for leslie (ex crush) felt like family rather than olivia which was deeper, built on passion, and desire to become a lifelong partner

[collapse]

i quite disagree with people who gave one star review. the genre clearly stated "misunderstanding" so if it doesnt fits your type of misunderstanding that you expected then please refrain from reading this. it is not your typical "all perfet cold face ML chasing their perfectly 10/10 despair wife" - tbh this genre feels dull to me after reading bunch of them://

so... if youre someone who had been dealing relationships conflict, conversation problems (family, lover, friend) and has observe people's emotions around you. THEN READ THIS <<less

This is the angst I am looking for! The story is very well written and quite realistic especially in communication issues between couples, siblings, and friends. I was expecting to just have angst of unrequited love but no. There is angst for family, personal growth, self relflections, and human connections.

Plus, I don't think that there were 'tr*shy' characters. The story was laid out in a way where everyone has both positive and negative traits which affected their relationships with each other. And there was character development especially when they start... more>> realizing things after the results of the decisions they made. This is not an action, but for me there is not a dull moment in the story. It was surprising that for a genre like this, it really kept me reading until 5am with tears streaming down my eyes regularly.

Definitely my best read so far when it comes to angst stories. <<less

Like what others said, this novel was very emotionally nuanced. Not everything is black and white when it comes to relationships and Chloe and Gerard's relationship depicts exactly that. The miscommunications were frustrating but if you view it in the context of real relationships, it's very understandable. It shows what happens when you have people who come together with baggages, insecurities and are actually human. If you take the "dream book" away from the story, it doesn't diminish how well it portrays relationships from married couples to sibling relationships and... more>> parental dynamics. I highly enjoyed it. It's angsty but not just for the sake of separating the characters. The way the author wrote their separation (s) was clever. Is it a perfect novel, no, but it's one of the first novels I've read where the characters really felt 3D. The author even wrote about how postpartum depression/anxiety can affect a and how motherhood changes you and how confusing it can get grappling with identity loss. Please give it a chance past the first few chapters which are frustrating because you see where the miscommunication is and what they could've done to minimize the damage but the characters unravel beautifully as the story progresses. You realize that there's reasons why they do what they do and sometimes it the way they've been raised or taught or it's the way they view themselves that hold them back. All in all, very human. <<less
