A fresh breath of air in the midst of all this isekai saturation. It's a very simple yet engaging premise where our protagonist, Seol Yeong solves supernatural mysteries to clear his name. It's kind of episodic in that each arc has its own ghost story to solve, but there is also an overarching mystery in the background. Because of this, this story is more Supernatural and Mystery (kinda like a Detective series) so if you're looking for a more Action-based series, you might prefer to go elsewhere. Regardless, it's a... more>> very interesting premise and there is no isekai despite the time related tags so that is also a plus in my opinion.

If you are curious about the time tags though, without giving too much away
Spoiler

they're kinda more features of individual arcs rather than part of the basic premise of the story so you don't need to worry

[collapse]

The novel also kinda just throws you into the setting and you have to figure things out as you go along but I don't think it's much of an issue - it works out since it feels less exposition-y and it feels fun when you get those little nuggets of information about each character.

And yes, the characters are pretty well done as well. Seol Yeong is quite honest and straightforward which is refreshing to read, meanwhile Zaha is kinda mysterious yet a bit of a troll which makes for some interesting character interactions between the two. SY also has three older (non-blood-related) brothers and they have a really sweet relationship where he listens to them well and they dote on him lol.

Sometimes I do get confused on what's going and who's speaking at times, but it got a bit better later on so I don't know if I just got used to it or the writing improved. Edit: Me from the future here, no the TL does not get better, I just got used to reading it. The TL actually deteriorates and there are multiples instances where I feel like I'm reading barely edited MTL. Please do better.

Overall good story. <<less

Just in case, my grammar may be very bad for this review bcs I'm crying while writing this review, i'll put the spoiler why. First of all, this novel is really good. Although the rating in nu is 3.9, it's quite popular at kr side fandom. I come here to read the novel after reading their ongoing manhwa (the art is good af, must read). Second of all, the plot here is indeed refreshing (i won't be putting the plot review too much tho). Although the novel didn't say it's BL, there's many scenes that show the close bonding between the two MCs. 1st MC, Seol Yeong/Cho Ok In (the guy with ponytail, white hwarang clothes). He's a kind soul that pray for the dead/ghost, his power in this novel is one of a kind that can be a double edge sword if not trained properly. 2nd MC or in some case the ML, Ja Ha/Sang Seon (the guy wearing black clothes hwarang). He's a famous hwarang who saved the world from calamity god before. A little bit spoiler of him:

Spoiler

he's already dead when try to seal the calamity god 8 years ago (failed), but he's alive now as a living corpse that doesn't look like a corpse, 1st MC now about his condition

[collapse]

The relationship between the 2 MC can be define as platonic but it's more than that, the relationship between partner and soulmate (it's hard to put it into words). 2nd MC don't trust anyone with his secret and may look like a villain at first but he's actually a good person. At first 1st MC don't really like him but later he trust 2nd MC and help him. The relationship between these two honestly give me the biggest impact.

The main villain here is like an op boss you can find in a game where they can 1 hit k.o the players, great calamity god use the form of a woman with a lot of seals on her face. The side characters here have their own story, I especially love the little girl shaman (won't spoil anymore than this), the trio brothers from the tiger troops relationship with 1st MC is like family, and Seogom love hate relationship with 1st MC. Past play a huge role here since it'll reveal so many truths. Angst (climax of the story) chapters start from 219. This might be a heartbreaking spoiler:

Spoiler

Jaha sacrifice himself in order to seal the great calamity god so that Seol Yeong won't need to sacrifice himself (he want seolyeong to survive no matter what). Jaha leave many wills to other hwarangs that make them sad and cried but the most deppressed one is Seol Yeong, he cried with his tears flowing nonstop along with the memory with Jaha. The last thing Jaha left for him is the sentence "wanna make a bet" (in a way this is Jaha way of telling Seol Yeong his feeling that he'll come back alive again).

[collapse]

As for the ending (it's open ending btw so it's up to the readers on how they'll perceive it) :

Spoiler

Seol Yeong live alone in a cottage, he keep calling for Jaha soul for 8 years. Many of his friend tried to stop him and even told him that there will be a huge price to be paid for resurrecting a human soul but it's futile. Seolyeong keep calling Jaha soul with all kind of means and this result in his time being stopped (to put it simply he become an immortal). Between the time he's outside in a snowy day, he met a child grave robbing who look like someone he's waiting for. That's when he know that his effort didn't go to waste (It's younger jaha who don't have any memory). He hold the tiny had full of scars and said that he don't need to do this anymore (scavenge graves for food)

[collapse]

The story is not completely sad, just the last arc only when a "little" tragedy happen with open ending. I'll add more once I dare to open up the novel again cuz I keep crying everytime I saw the ending (literally, this is the first time I cried so hard bcs of the ending).

Anyway, in case if anyone already read the ending and can't move on like me, feel free to dm me for any fanarts or fanfic from the korean fandom site. There will be many good stories and arts where the fans there make a continuation story of their own (it heal me a little).

It's been long overdue I write a review on my favorite novel of all time.

I absolutely love this novel. That being said, a lot of people are initially turned off by the style of writing. It can be hard to understand who's talking, and every time someone asked me about it I always just said it reminded me more of a play at some parts. The author has created a revised version that reads more like a novel, and I hope one day it can be re-translated. But regardless, once... more>> you get accustomed to the writing it's a pretty easy read.

The story is really enjoyable. It's supernatural, but also heavily involves the history of Korea during the kingdom of Silla. There are many arcs that are engaging, and the characters are what really made me attached to the series. Seol Young and Jaha have a unique relationship that develops over the course of the story, that starts as hatred and blooms into companionship. Despite the fact this is not a BL, there's many instances of behaviors from both of them that really made me wonder. Jaha calls Seol Young cute, wipes his bloody tears away... I could go on and on. Regardless if their relationship is romantic or not, you realize how treasured they are to each other by the end of the story.

It's really worth the read. I hope more people get introduced to this series and it can gain popularity overseas. An English license is my dream!!! <<less

I'm not really someone who likes to write reviews, but because this novel is pretty quiet on the English side, and there's the webtoon adaptation that came out recently that might encourage more people to check the novel out, I thought it'd be worth sharing my detailed opinion on a story that really ended up stealing my heart.

At its core, Requiem is a supernatural mystery novel that details the journey the two main characters take in solving individual smaller incidents, namely dangerous ghost stories brought to life, all while making... more>> progress towards resolving the larger catastrophe looming overhead. These individual (and often tragic) ghost stories as well as the development of the main characters' cooperation from bitterly distrustful coworkers to snarky but inseparable partners gives the reader quite a few cathartic and touching moments to stew in.

Regarding the translation and ease of reading:

The SDO translation is not dogwater or unreadable persay, but it definitely could be better, and there is a noticeable slip in quality towards the later chapters. Although I really enjoyed the novel, I also recognise that the average overseas reader might need to come in with a an open mindset and a little bit of perseverance in order to enjoy and finish it. Below are my more detailed thoughts, spoilered only for length and not spoilers:

Spoiler

This story is a fusion fantasy that takes place in the kingdom of Silla of ancient Korea. There is some esoteric terminology for the supernatural beings, the heavy Buddhist influences, as well as other societal positions and minutae that doesn't translate conveniently well to anything in English. Although Korean readers have cited the novel as being well researched, there is not much extended in-novel exposition for this for better or worse, choosing to explain certain concepts as they come up but not overly so. The lack of a glossary to explain many of these translation choices and their nuances does make it difficult to follow what's going along when it comes to the intricacies of the ghost stories and their resolutions, which might make some of these mysteries feel confusing or unsatisfying to an English reader who lacks background knowledge.

My personal opinion is that the emotional payoff of most arcs was worth the stumbling in the assembly of the building blocks, but I am aware I am a bigger picture over the sum of the parts type of person. While I liked the ghost stories, they were mostly quite straightforward, generally structured more to set up a specific emotional response rather than encourage the reader to solve anything. If you were looking for something very innovative, there was probably only one ghost tied to the main character's past with a gimmick I thought was rather unique, but the rather unclear translation makes it difficult to fully parse all the moving parts of that arc. If you believe this might be a dealbreaker to you, this is my warning to you. As long as one or both of the main characters interests you from early on, I encourage people to give it a try nonetheless even if the start seems a little bit hard to follow along. There is a turning point in the story around the fourth or fifth labelled arc that may change your perception of the main characters and the course of the narrative.

[collapse]

About the protagonists:

The two main characters are part of the Hwarang, which you can consider something like a group of the swordsmen equivalent of knights in Korea made up of beautiful long haired men from good families practicing noblesse oblige, so if you like beautiful long haired men with swords, you have come to the right book.

If you enjoy banter, you'll probably enjoy the dialogue between the mains. They very much play into the trope of a nagging boss who enjoys bullying the upstart new hire and the overworked and sarcastic secretary who resents that no one else seems to understand how lousy and inconsiderate his boss is underneath the noble veneer. Even when they begin to get along better, this sort of back and forth between them never quite disappears.

A short description of both, no spoilers:

Spoiler

There are undeniably two main characters to this story of equal importance, but because the entirety of the main story is told from the point of view of Seol Yeong, I will consider him the protagonist for convenience. Seol Yeong is a hwarang who practices sorcery and can listen to the voices and regrets of the dead. He has bad history with the rest of the hwarang outside of his faction, and although he has been diligently serving as a hwarang for seven years, he is inconveniently framed by a bad omen on top of his existing poor reputation and willingly gives up his position with his faction temporarily to act as an independent hwarang to clear his name. Although he is doted on by and equally loves his brothers, he is quite acerbic, willful, and antisocial to basically anyone else. The novel itself is written in a way that feels quite dry and curt, which I believe matches the tone I think Seol Yeong would take in his head if he was narrating it from third person. Even though he may have honourable and earnest intentions, Seol Yeong starts off with many enemies and few allies on his journey to resolve the growing number of incidents across the kingdom.

The deuteragonist, Jaha, is the former leader of the hwarang, who mysteriously disappeared eight years ago after defeating the previous Great Calamity. While all of the hwarang except Seol Yeong (who joined too late to recognise him) respect him deeply for what he has done to save the kingdom, he has a rather difficult personality, and teases others with the playful arrogance of someone who is used to always getting his way. When he reappears out of the blue only to start travelling alongside Seol Yeong, he's initially quite actively antagonistic and patronising, although he occasionally steps in to help Seol Yeong out at crucial moments, seemingly on a whim.

[collapse]

Now, here's my more spoilery review on their dynamic if you would like to know more of what you're getting into:

Spoiler

Seol Yeong is ostracised from other people on a more obvious level, because of his blunt attitude, strange upbringing, and past conflicts with his fellow hwarang. Jaha on the other hand, has been put on a pedestal as a person born to be a hero for much of his life. He is able to make objectively tragic decisions and sacrifices with the understanding that no one else but him is in the position to do so, and initially bears the heavy burden of both the admiration and hate with lofty grace and cold indifference.

Although on the surface the two main characters could not be more different, I liked that they continuously ended up relying on and saving each other to the point that they trusted and understood each other better than anyone else could. Seol Yeong, because he is uniquely qualified to empathise with the dead, is the only person who understands the weight of Jaha’s sacrifice as well as the grief and resentment he could not show to the rest. In turn, he keeps Jaha's secret and stands by Jaha's side, because he sincerely believes that through their combined efforts, they will be able to overcome any hurdle. It is Seol Yeong's words that allow the jaded and isolated Jaha to continue hanging onto things like hopes and a future, things that he had already given up on after his first failure. I personally thought it was very touching that they grew increasingly indebted to each other as both literal and metaphorical lifelines to each other.

[collapse]

Other misc. notes I can think of at the moment:

The named and recurring side characters in this novel are quite enjoyable and distinct in my opinion, but they are also not particularly multifaceted, so you get what is on the tin. Only one important side character gets something of a development arc.

The author has a rather dry sense of humour. Though I think she generally knows when to be glib and when to not be, there are probably occasions where it's compounded on with Seol Yeong's rather blunt and oblivious demeanor that cause there to be more jokes than a reader might like even in serious situations.

The webtoon art is very nice, and as of this post it's about halfway through the Lion Dance arc; if you would like to read it first to get a feel for what the characters look like, I think that's a great idea. However, the webtoon also skips a lot of small but rather valuable details in the novel, so even if you got up to so and so arc in the webtoon, please start the novel from the beginning...

Below includes very heavy spoilers, including my thoughts on the ending:

Spoiler

Perhaps the thing that hits hardest about Requiem is once it sinks in who exactly the titular requiem in question was for...

For people who may want to ship the protagonists, you of course can (there is quite a large overlap between overseas fans of Requiem and danmei titles), though some people might be unhappy with how the story ends with a bittersweet and open-ended reincarnation hook. On the other hand, if you're already familiar with common danmei tropes, it might make certain people even more into it...

[collapse]

And one last thing, since they're still untranslated, if anyone wants the raws for the Nirvana special side story, please let me know privately, I'd be happy to share if you'd like to take a go at translating it. <<less
