After a lifetime of war and killing, the continent was finally unified thanks to his efforts. Now, old, his wish is to live the rest of his life in peace and try to find salvation for all the blood he spilled. However, his old friend, maddened by paranoia, couldn’t tolerate someone so powerful, so he betrayed Ian and killed him.

In his last breath, he cast a time magic that allowed him to travel back to when he was a young boy. With all the knowledge he previously had, he decided to do things better so he could end with less regrets.

I read around 100 chapters of this novel around one or two years ago, so this isn't much of an accurate review. Still, considering it's gotten a manhwa recently, I decided to put a review up even though it's quite late. (Not gonna lie, although the plot's nothing too interesting, the manhwa has pretty art and the webtoon format makes it much easier to read, so it might be worth a try).

Also, I have to emphasize that this novel is not to be associated with a different novel with a manhwa adaptation, 8서클 마법사의 환생, often translated as "The Rebirth of an 8th-Circled Mage". Who put that in alternate titles? They are still distinct novels despite similarity in titles; it's obvious that the MC's names in the two... more>> are different as well.

OK, onto the review:

This novel is pretty generic magic power fantasy fare. It kind of just embodies the tropes it uses (second chance, betrayal, future knowledge, genius MC), not really having anything particularly new, although I'm sure it does add a bit of interesting things somewhere... probably. Not to mention that the MC comes off as a bit of a jerk sometimes, which, depending on whether you're into that or not, can be a plus or a minus. (For me, it's a minus). There's also a few plot holes here and there.

If you're into the tropes which are featured in it, this is probably not too bad of a read for you (like me when I read it), it makes a not-too-bad time-waster. But if you're looking for high-quality plot and characters, this is not your place, since the novel isn't much more than skin-deep.

On the delivery of the novel, or the writing quality, I suppose (not an actual spoiler) :

Spoiler

It's difficult to tell. One of my deepest impressions on the novel was that the delivery was quite confusing. This something that I now realize wasn't just this novel but many other KRs with less work put into them; the translators didn't want to go through the effort of reorganizing the delivery to make more a little more sense in English. I remember that it was much more confusing before, but it might just be me misremembering, or Asian Hobbyist editing their chapters.

Let's take a single-sentence excerpt from chapter 78: "As Ian was searching for a possible explanation, his mind came up with a dragon. It is difficult to be certain, but typically, in these cases, an unexpected scenario was never out of the question."

A little confusing. Other issues include that dialogue is often relayed in a confusing and bland manner with short paragraphs explaining reactions and happenings between, and there are occasional errors in grammar, as well as typos. I don't expect translations on the level of respected and licensed sites, and Asian Hobbyist did a pretty good job on it, especially compared to some other groups that only lightly edit MTL, but the delivery is not very smooth and definitely not a strong point of the novel.

neither great nor horrible. There are lots of convenient coincidences and the MC has master level luck-fu and very, very strong plot armor but that's expected in these kinds of novels. He's also one of those people who wants to be the center of attention and never tries to be low key, even at the start. I'm not a fan of attention-seeking show off MC but it's tolerable. There are some things I find unbelievable like his mom being an innocent after the very harsh life she led before; she... more>> comes off as borderline developmentally disabled, which is not the perception the author was aiming for. This isn't my favorite back in time/ second chance novel but the story itself isn't terrible. The translation, on the other hand, is very uneven, sometimes it's alright and sometimes it's worse than unedited mtl. <<less

The general premise is good, time travel back into the past and all that. However this is probably the most generic use of that premise that I have seen.

Spoiler

Especially when the entire story loses all gravity and starts playing viewing the MC as some all powerful deity of some sort. The revenge goal has been accomplished and then some, there are no characters that affect the plot in any way except tangentially. Threats are neutralized in the most effective way possible. The powering up sequence is so either predictable/incoherent that even when the MC does do things, the gravitas of his actions seem trivial. Even the novel's most original idea, having the MC have to puppeteer multiple versions of himself is drowned in an ocean of mediocrity where there is even a lacking of perspective on the all but one of the puppets of himself.

Overall a dreadfully boring series that can't even write power fantasy correctly. <<less

OP protagonist in a novel where combat strength is the answer to most of his problems. Honestly, it's pretty boring. He already has the answer to 99% of the challenges that come his way.

Read the novel after finishing the manhwa coz I wanted to know more. It wasn't worth it.

I suggest you read the manhwa rather than the novel. You may lose some details but believe me those details are not worth your time. It won't affect the story you read in any ways.

It's a cliched story. Similar to a couple of other 8th or 9th class mage/wizard/sorcerer that got mu*dered and managed to travel back in time to change fate and avenged their death.

The translation and editing is pretty bad, so bad it's funny.

Such as the word "reclaimer" is used when it should be "retainer". Or "sir name" when it should be "surname". I spit beer all over my keyboard when I first read these words.

It could be much, much better. The story and the translation. But it is what it is.... more>> Mindless fun and a good laugh. <<less

No wonder the manhwa felt rushed. There was so so much to the story leftover. It was a good novel that made sure to tie up loose ends that didn't even exist in the manhwa. Then again, the novel did come first. This review was written after reading vol I.

I see that many people have dropped this because of one reason or another and I don't get them. This story might have been a bit too much in giving the MC so much power but that happened gradually, and the... more>> MC struggled and worked hard for it to happen. I'm definitely against the whole artisan arc. It brought in too much unnecessary OP baggage that the novel could've actually done without. I like how the MC gets to explore the what ifs in the guise of fragmented dimensions. The Crown Prince's redemption arc was definitely one of the better aspects of the novel. It would've been nicer if their relationship was depicted more instead of just offhanded remarks. The romance between the Princess and the Mage was another detail that did not seem that relevant but since the author went about it in the usual offhanded manner, it was kinda acceptable, I guess.

Spoiler

Vol II; I only read the first chapter and the whole of the northern plains got obliterated in one breath along with my courage to continue reading. -_-|||

Bland this story was bland. Every once in a while some random element was thrown in to make you unsatisfied to drop it partway but it does not make it worth the read. Nothing is particularly memorable from the characters to the plot to the magic everything is just mindbogglingly bland.

I have read 10 chapters so far. Nothing special or something to comment about.

It isn't good, neither is bad, just a bit below average. I have yet to see any personality from the MC, neither any of the characters except the crown prince who we only saw for like 5 lines (funny enough that he seems to have more personality than the MC who we have been following for 10 chapters)

This one is good. maybe a bit too fast paced but atleast there are developments, things happening, action segments, and a plot understandable but we dont know how it will end yet. But I am a bit annoyed. The character is saying he is gonna keep a low profile but he keeps doing stuffs that attracts attention. oh well whatever. And he has a mother complex...
