Transmigrating into a comic as the cannon fodder——Normally entails one holding on to the protagonist’s reliable thighs to ensure a smooth life ahead

Either the thighs of the male and, or female lead

Or the thighs of the antagonist

Regardless, one can enjoy being sheltered from the elements

The problem is, this comic, is a comic with a Downer Ending, in capital letters!

All the main characters, from the male to female leads to all the antagonists are dead!

The thighs will be there, but all sawn off!

In this world destined for ruin in war:

The choices are

1. Become a companion of the male lead, to fight on until meeting one’s demise on the battlefields

2. Stay far, far away from the male lead. Live as removed from the troubles brewing throughout the world as possible, and enjoy what little peace there will be

Anyone who thinks in a remotely human way will pick option 2

Right?

… Right?

***

“If I wasn’t told that this is a form of love, I would only be able to see it as the naked blade it is.”

***

Happy ending in the end; high Western fantasy; dual male protagonists.

After reading several other masterpieces in the past months, this novel could still "wow ed" me and hit all of my reading G-spot. The other reviews really didn't lie that this novel made you want to finish it in one sitting lol. If you've read Lout of the Count Family, Stray, or Ainz (webtoon), then you would've loved this. Because this novel is basically a combination of those three stories.

World Building

I love how the author tried to differentiate and explain to us about the landscape, charms, policies, and... more>> uniqueness of the 3 main Empires. While I haven't read volume 4 so I don't really have much to talk about, but it seems like the area of each demon leaders would be interesting as well. There's also the tidbits of this world's mythology, language (yes the 3 empires did not speak the same language), legendary creatures, and unique flora.

The power system was through, and it is fascinating how the Wizards/Witches make sense of their words, using semantics and grammar to materialize their spells and runes. The mystery of why the goddess had hidden the ancient vocabularies, making it impossible for Wizards and Witches to use them to make their own spells/harmful spell, in the traditional spells, is also interesting.

Warning = There's elements of pe*ophilia, in*est, s*xual assault, graphic depiction of violence and torture, male pregnancies, and there's even some forced (?) transgenderity in the novel (most doesn't happen to the main characters tho).

Plot

Basically, Vo1 is Adventure, Vol 2 is Revolutions and Politics, Vol 3 is war between Kingdoms, Vol 4 is the actual war with demons. Each is as good as it could be. Especially author's writing on tech, politics, policies, and war. Like you just know author had done their research on these.

The explanation itself was rarely boring as we could immediately see the cause/impact that those things do (example, explaining why the Empire revolution happens currently and why it succeeds while the lead characters were at the forefront of said revolution).

The action was quite a bit in the first two volumes as the main characters themself was still 15-16 yo at this time. Thus even tho they are much stronger than their peers, they could not just face the Empire's powerhouse heads on (they have to be stealthy about it).

About the war itself:

Spoiler

Sorry for comparing this again with LCF. But unlike LCF where you just fight against terrorists and monsters, like it's pretty straightforward, there wasn't much of a moral dilemma when fighting them. Here, the leads have to fight regular, enlisted foot soldiers. This would be the source of nightmares (PTSD) for Engelle, especially, as some of his attacks had been the culprit of many of the soldiers' horrible deaths, as well as those whom he had failed to save (FYI he'll also become the medic in here). Being the allied soldiers was as easy either; you might want to know that aside from attack magic, Engelle was also formidable at healing spells. Even a cut limb can be reattached to his hand. So imagine having your hand cutted, then healed at night just to be cut and reattached again, day by day...

[collapse]

With two of the protagonists having 'future revelation' and cheats, you would've guessed they would steamroll at least the human side of things and would focus more on the war against demons. But nah, the human villains were more long-lived than you would've thought. Like the plot doesn't have much scheming on our main characters' side, but they would attempt assassinations on characters that would cause great destruction in the future. But god dang, those guys were really slippery; the protagonist could barely stop some of the tragedies that would happen. It does make the plot more exciting, but it could somewhat frustrate you lol.

Main Leads

Engelle Necker (previously Gu Su) :

Seemingly always gloomy yet noble, a homebody, has a hard time showing his feelings, lowkey lazy but has a high sense of responsibility, has a hard mouth but actually very caring to everyone. A naturally genius Wizard with high capacity of Aether (mana), high learning ability, and his knowledge that is foreign on this world. And most of all, he has a low sense of self-worth, AKA he's also self-sacrificial b*stard XD

(you could argue him willing to sacrifice anything for Alex (the comic male lead) and Elena (the comic female lead) was is in the line of thought, 'if the leads dies, then I would definitely die too, so might as well kill myself for their survival' but still, www)

Slight spoiler that would already be explained in the first few chapters:

Spoiler

He was previously a high school teacher (which is why he is so patient and even motherly towards his friends and children, although he doesn't admit to this and never directly shows it), but retired because his hyperthymesia (inability to forget) had disturbed his psychology on social life. Unlike Cale's (LCF) ability, which could be somewhat controllable, hyperthymesia is something Engelle (Gu Su) was born with. So you could imagine the sensory overload of having to remember every vision, sound, smell, physical and physiological pain you have gone through at every waking moment.

[collapse]

Big spoiler for vol 1:

Spoiler

You should have already expected this when you heard about Engelle's lineage from his mom, but he'll be able to resurrect himself from the dead (terms and conditions may apply). Really didn't expect that someone with his color scheme would the the incarnation of Phoenix tho. Anyway, every time he resurrected, he would still gain the scars of his previous deaths. So you could imagine why Alex became slightly more insane and protective the more Engelle was killed (not to mention Alex directly witnessed most of the horrible deaths Engelle had gone through).

[collapse]

Alex Schooner:

The dependable and indomitable leader to the rest of humanity, a softly shining sunshine to those he cares for, and a sticky puppy towards Engelle. Because of the memory of the innumerable deaths of his comrades, friends, and family without respite, Alex is very emotionally repressed. It was not until later, when Engelle had broken his wall, that he could finally cry after all those years.

Spoiler

As the hero who saved the remaining of humanity, Alex loves all fellow humans equally. Despite many tragedies befallen him, he would not fear, would not grieve, as to kept on advancing to the end where all would be safe. But with the arrival of Engelle in his life, gradually, he realizes he has become more selfish. All of his fear, and his love, would be gradually concentrated onto that one person. Despite knowing that bringing Engelle to the battlefield would benefit them greatly and save even more lives, uptill the end, he's still vehemently refuse Engelle to go. Even more radically, he tried to literally lock Engelle in a room from going to the war.

[collapse]

Both Engelle and Alex are kind souls, but the difference (and also the source of their many arguments) on their kindness is that: Engelle would choose to keep his friend and family safe in instead of attempting to save far gones victim, while Alex would want to save everyone no matter what. Engelle could still forgive those who had harmed him, while Alex would just want to make them disappear from the world of the living.

Characterization & Relationship

Every character in this novel has a story, everyone, even the villains. Most of the characters we met would have some physical feature or kinks that would made them easily memorable (as there were quite a lot of characters here).

You might like them or you might hate them, but you would definitely understand the reason for 'why they are doing so and so' in this way. The characters, or even the regular citizen, wouldn't have the same opinion either. Later, even tho both protagonists are heroes that had saved humanity, there would still a group of people that would sh*t on them (especially on Engelle, my boi has a lot of hater smh). So, although it was said to be a dual protagonist story, often time we got other characters' POV too.

One thing I noticed from this novel is that there are a lot of brocon and siscon characters in this novel lol. Not in a derogatory way, of course, these older siblings just love their lil sis/lil bro so much to the point of death (literally). Like, yeah, pretty sure the only siblings who didn't like each other were those of the royal families. The rest would do anything for the sake of the other sibling.

Another thing I had noticed, is that it has a lot of female characters. And by a lot I mean A LOT. Like I'm pretty sure the male:female relevant characters ratio in this novel would be equal, if not, more on the female side. Let's just count the most noticeable one:

Alex has two sisters, Alex's swordmanship teacher is a woman, Engelle's magic teacher is a woman, Ribell's (Elena, the female lead) main forces are mainly women, the greatest antagonist in the first half of the novel is a woman, the pope is a woman, two of the three archbishop are women, the demon side also have two heavy weight female figure who's basically the de facto leader of the demon clan, and this is not counting on the female friends and allies that Alex and Engelle had made.

Do I hate it? Nu uh, this is fricking awesome! Go feminism! Tbh, I truly do enjoy all the characters, even tho I also want to bury some of them through the 7th hell (looking at you Lucia). And idk if it's just me (my basis is the FLs in rofan manhwa/novel) but the personality of the female characters in this novel is just so refreshing? The girl bosses weren't simply dominering ice queens or reckless powerhouses with a dash of emotion if the situation needed to be. The villainess wasn't just an annoying manipulative b*tch who'll laugh at her enemy misery. The sweet girlies' cute behaviour weren't deliberately, cloyingly cute, if you get what I mean. Basically their personality all have some substance in them instead of just being rows of tropes and plot devices (this also includes the male characters ofc).

Romance (?)

This might come as a surprise to you, but officially, this novel is not a shounen-ai (in jjwxc it is categorized as no-cp). Well why then? Do you have to go look through a microscope to see the yaoi? Quite the opposite really, the love between Alex and Engelle was as apparent as it can be. They often sleep in the same bed, they bicker because of various things, and they are even willing to do something extreme in what they think would be right to protect their significant other (even tho said significant other already refused to do what they want).
Spoiler

Heck, they even build a family together and adopt a son at the end.

[collapse]

Guess what makes this still 'technically' not a shounen ai? Well you see... they never f*ck, or kiss, or even become 'lovers' in the end. There's no "I love you" here, only "I'm your only knight to the end of your life; I'll be your wizard till death do us apart". Every interaction Alex has with Engelle is considered as 'friendship', that is what the other characters and the narration tell us in the written form. Yknow, it's just a bros thing to do to live together in a lakeview villa alone with your bro and sleep in one bed together every day with your bros... :)

Tbh, I wasn't mad that the author did the romance that way, I was actually kinda impressed. "This is a love story without physical relationship" kinda resonates with me as the only reason I even started reading danmeis is because how dogsh*t the romance in shounen/seinen usually were, and the ones who are purely no-cp are even rarer than pandas (might've write a romance like this if I ever write a story myself). That being said, I still desire Alex & Engelle to kiss, but I shall expect that from the fanfics that may or may not exist in the future.

Small Complaints That I Have

Read it with a bit of salt, as this is mostly based on my personal taste (it's mostly rants, so I'm warning you not to read these before you actually read the novel) :

  • Spoiler

Author could've recounted some information in the later chapters. I feel like much of the base information in the stories was concentrated in the first few chapters. So when we are at the point when those informations becomes relevant again after numerous chapters... I was under the assumption that the author thought we should still remember when, in fact, we don't. I do love the 'do, don't tell' in writing, but tbh, I do feel like author should've add more information recounts, or maybe this is probably just the problem of my forgetful a** idk.

    [collapse]
  • Spoiler

The translation formatting was a bit odd for me because the translator only use single quotation marks for conversations. Usually single quotation mark for me is things that you said in your head. So at first I thought the characters had telepathy lol. The translation quality itself is great tho, even the theoretical yapping was very easy to digest.

    [collapse]
  • Spoiler

Could've used some fillers in this novel tbh. It'll be perfect, you could add even more adventures, and it'll add more weight (reason) to the emotional attachment Engelle has towards his friend, which would make his decision to save them even critical.

    [collapse]
  • Spoiler

An expansion to the above, but I honestly thought the school arc should've been longer for the same reason. I understand the reason why it didn't, but I still want to. Vol 1 and Vol 2 could've easily been expanded into 2 more volumes, but uh, I respect the author for wanting to finish this in Vol 4 to curb the risk of degrading writing

    [collapse]
  • Spoiler

Kinda ridiculous how much plot armor the villain in this novel could have lol. Like yeah, I understand, butterfly wings effect and what not, the villains were never a dumbass either but cmon now, most of them successfully avoided sure deaths multiple time? I could guess the author had done this to keep the sense of crisis and tragedies alive. And to make sure they could write the Three Empires War in Volume 3. I myself also greatly enjoy the content of volume 3. But things that lead up to that could kinda frustrate you, the war in volume 3 is very much easily avoidable tbh.

    [collapse]
  • Spoiler

Missed opportunity that the author didn't let Engelle wear a chocker when he gained a scar in his neck smh

    [collapse]
  • Spoiler

I'm tearing my head off because although the adopted son called Alex as 'dad', he calls Engelle as 'uncle'. Engelle was the one who picked up the son in the first place, he and Alex equally present in the son's growth, but why, WHY authorrr, just let the son call Engelle father also. Heck, let him call Engelle mother even, with how motherly Engelle's personality sometimes was. I mean, same s*x co-parenting, the kid having two fathers doesn't immediately make them a gay couple, right? (although it is obvious that they are)

    [collapse]
  • Spoiler

I kinda want the BE where Engelle have gotten the curse to be an immortal tbh. Or if he decided to go beyond rank IX and gone to be a god. But yeah, I could understand why neither Engelle nor Alex would agree to it. Unlike Cale, Engelle's friends and family were all mortal, nor did he have anyone who cared for him in his original world. So yeah, zero desire to go and explore the interdimensional universe. He's still pretty much an immortal in the current ending, tho, it's just that his life span wouldn't go indefinitely like if he were to get the curse.

    [collapse]
  • Spoiler

A bit mad when it was revealed that the gods only want the OG Engelle Necker to the MC's original world. I like the OG Engelle personality as well, but like, how dare you, Engelle/Gu Su is my son first, okay? But it does raise the question why OG Engelle was picked... Hyperthymesia, natural intelligence, and great magical talent came from Gu Su himself, so what does the god see in OG Engelle to be even more 'awesome' that they just HAD to bring him to the modern world? He's a great knight ig, or does he retain more of the phoenix abilities or what? But he still died of poison in the original timeline so, huh... Well I could probably find this out in the sister novel of this novel where OG Engelle (now Gu Su) would be the major supporting character, but I kinda want to wait for the TL tho.

Hey there, this is the translator! This is a pretty serious novel I stumbled upon by chance, because I'm always a fan of Western fantasy (but they're usually very mediocre to boring in quality, coming from CN circles). This one, though I've read in one go. It's truly a rare gem for Western High fantasy to be written well on jjwxc. Note, however, that this novel does contain mature themes and suitable for around PG13 rating, I'd say, so reader discretion advised.

Story-wise, this is a pretty plot-dense story with a... more>> few twists, but there are good flags (or hints) in the story to their occurrence, and everything feels mostly logical. It is not breaking any grounds in storytelling, but (other than the transmigration) is generally consistent with a surprisingly deep and fleshed out world view. There are characters who I come to root for, and the author seems to have a surprisingly good grasp of the history of early industrialisation and political movements. I would say that plot holes are scarce.

As for characters, there will be major growth. Both male leads will grow quite a lot, but the others are not bland characters either. From memory, there are also (to varying degrees) already developed side characters who have their own struggles and aspirations. There is also at least one farcically depraved character, but these are few and far between, and does also have story justifications, so no need to worry about feeling too disconnected from it all.

Overall, I would recommend this novel if you have some time to kill, and would like a great read in a longer story! <<less

This is a refreshing story. I've read the novel in one sitting (up to the latest chapters), and I can say that it has a good plot/story. What I enjoy is the fact that the protagonist doesn't get'spoon-fed' by all good stuff from being a transmigrator. He really worked hard for it, and there are parts of his plan that didn't work out. I'm actually excited about how this will turn out.

Ah, it also doesn't have any romance as of yet, which is what I'm really looking for in a... more>> novel. <<less
