5/5 to the translators! Especially Lilies are Flowers and Nighthawk Works

5/5 to the pacing of the story. Similar to the pacing of a drama (aka no dead spots)

3/5 to the characters. Zhan Zhao and Bai Yutang are consistent (even if I don't really feel like they have chemistry as romantic partners). However, Gongsun Ce was set up to be a sadistic and morbid weirdo in the beginning but later, it seemed like the author changed their mind about him--now he's just a classic tsundere. If you're into that, I... more>> guess... Bai Jingtang is more interesting, but the other characters make too many excuses for him.

For instance, he r*ped Gongsun. BYT's reaction is to tell GS not to give up on his brother because it's apparently an aftereffect of BJT's past brain damage. And yet, if BJT really could not control his impulses, could he smoothly be as successful alone as he is? I doubt it. Also what is BYT saying??? Are you an officer of the law or not??? In any case, it's clear that the author is just using brain damage as a plot point without actually researching what brain damage is. And that even though this is a police procedural, the author plays fast and loose with the law in her story.

3/5 to the actual "science" the author tries to use. As a person who has learned psychology at a university level, it's a little cringy to read. Sure these are existing theories in the field, but the author is really taking it to be magic in some parts of the story.

Namely, Zhao Jue's entire existence. The whole Killer Academy case. The info about DID is off; the reason Multiple Personality Disorder was renamed Dissociative Identity Disorder is because the leading theory is no longer that there are multiple "personalities" residing in one person. Instead, it is more of a person dissociating from certain memories and experiences and letting different facets of their emotional/mental states link to those dissociated memories/experiences. Maybe because it was written in 2005?

Anyway, it's easy to tell that the author has done some surface level research, but not enough to understand the field. Which is like, I get it, this is supposed to be a fun piece of fiction that is written mostly for the enjoyment of the author. I just feel like if you're going to write psychology wrong, why even make psychology such an integral part of your story???? Why not just write a supernatural mystery instead of pretending it's a normal police procedural.

Overall, a shallow story with shallow characters. Pretty fun for a light read! Just don't care too much about the inconsistencies. <<less

Oh my goodness finally! Finally someone picked this up omg. This novel is really amazing *v*) / complete with psychological thrills and of course BL :D but really.. Also check out the drama series it is worth it.

This is my cup of tea. It's a bit similar with Guardian, but purely crime themed, without any fantasy supernatural genre like it. And it's already adapted into a drama. Really my tea. And so many pairings. I must say that, if you don't like psychology theme or anything heavy, you better turn left to the exit door while you still can. Although there's still a comedy side to it, it's just a little. The novel is quite heavy and frustrating for me because you need lots of brain cells... more>> to ingest the plot and some unfamiliar terms (for me, I don't really like to search up the terms and thing I don't understand and relied entirely on TL notes). I read the chapters in my language, there's someone who translated it until chapter 40, if I'm not wrong. And it's a bit different from mystic wu's, some scenes I didn't see in mystic wu's, like internal monolog or something, were there, but I'm not entirely sure. There's not many chapters available for now, so I will wait for this novel. I'm not disappointed with this. As I like the kind of this novel and because I like Guardian and saw words in internet that this novel was similar to guardian, I quickly search it up. This review will probably be rewritten in the future. <<less

BEFORE ALL: R*pe victim becomes lover tag isn't for the main couple! It's for a side couple! Main couple has a very healthy relationship!

I first watched the drama version (which was amazing) then moved into the novel (which was even more amazing) and honestly, this novel became one of my favorite stories! I was looking for a good detective drama then found this gem. But this novel has more than that, a good plot, good characters, good villains. enough hot times... The MC and ML are both smart and funny!

I'm... more>> so grateful for the translators' hard work! Although the original novel still continue, I hope they keep translating for us

Pls give this novel more reviews, ratings, and the attention it deserves! Also watch the drama, it's so good! <<less

I always love mystery and crime novels. Adding BL in it makes everything so much better. For those who came to read the novel after watching the drama, I know you guys will enjoy it because the suspense is 10x better.

For better quality and understanding please consider reading Lilies are Flowers and Nighthawk works. I hope others will enjoy this novel as much I had. Can't wait for Second season of the drama to come out!!! Read that it's gonna be all original cast!

A really fun book with some caveats

- the doctor/big brother pairing is disappointing. I just skip over their sections tbh.

- this novel's bread and butter is psychology, but its understanding of psychology is very bad, occasionally offensive.

Still, I enjoy it for what it is, a fun buddy cop romp that is also a romance.

As long as you go in knowing that the psych stuff is bad, I think its a great time, very sweet for the most part and the characters are very engaging.

absolutely loved the relationship between the ML and the MC. Very supportive and without much s*upidity and immaturity from either side. The ML treats the MC so, so well and leaves me a little depressed about my own future prospects, honestly. Continued reading mostly for the relationship dynamic.

the actual mysteries were the focal point of the story, and, while I did enjoy them, I didn't really keep reading because of them. I guess I'm just not the biggest fan of mystery and never when I was reading did I think... more>> "oh my god I need to know what happens next".

one things I do have to note, however, is that I think the depictions of mental illness in this book go beyond inaccurate and directly into harmful. Multiple personality disorder (now called disassociative personality disorder) is used as the reason someone might kill, and mentally ill individuals are blanketly portrayed as violent mu*derers perpetuating the stigma against such people.

hated the side couples. Especially gongsun zhe and bai jintang. The weird r*pe/stalking/guilt tripping they had going on in the beginning did not inspire much support for them from me. <<less

On to the review, so I love this story and I'm very glad that it got picked up again (author-nim please stop writing more chaptersㅠ.ㅠ)

I like the different cases and how unique/interesting they are.

One thing that I need an answer on is whether Jiang Ping is a girl or boy. Sometimes the translations say she other times it's he, but from what I know, there are no females in the SCI unit (only in the drama).

people keep saying the BYT is condoning the r*pe between his brother and Gongsun, but I don't think that that's the case. I don't think BYT knows that his brother r*ped him.

Although I'm at the beginning, but with certainty can say that this is a very interesting story. Not to mention I like all the mystery/thriller/detective type of stories, but it's pretty upbeat and lively in terms of storytelling, it doesn't dawdle and case progress is fast. Main characters are charming, their bickering is cute and it hits the spot for me. At times it feels that things go a little bit too fast, but it's a subjective thing and I don't think it spoils things. All in all it's a... more>> type of story you really should try out :) <<less

I m so glad I could find the novel here. I just completed vol 2 and was so stressed. Even vol 5 is going on. I m so happy. Thank you so much ❤️for making the effort to write❤️.

If I couldn't find them I would have gone crazy after just reading 2nd vol. Now I can read the whole series. Thanks alot. The translation is of really good quality and it's easier for me to understand than other places. The work is really good👍🏻

This is heaven!! I watched the drama before but didn't know about this novel and now that I found it, I'm excited to read more of it because the drama was needed to be portrayed as bl because of china's censorship, sadly. The drama was good tho so this one would ought to be amazing❤ love it!!

I've been following this novel from the first tl that had 13 chapters, to the second one who translated the book (who had a really good translation hands down) up to almost chapter 25 or so.

I read the MTL up to Ch102 tho I haven't watched the series yet.

Bruuuuuh this book is soooo frigging GOOOOOOOOOD!!!! I couldn't help not to search for the MTL of this when the 2nd translator had halted her translations!!! Aaah I was itching to find out what happened to my fave villain asdfghjkl!!!!

TBH the villain... more>> really has his charm. He maybe a villain but the guy is just so SMART

I love the characters development It's a great novel that I read so far, also the translation are chief kiss, I don't have much to say but I do love the chemistry between kitty and mouse, also the magician, and bai chi.

Love the pairing of all couples they are all so cute and perfect, made for each other, I love the plot lines, the mu*der plots and how they are solved plus the mysteries behind them and the way the cases are solved loved it. I love how cute all the couples are and I love the bickering of zhan yao and zhao jue

This is the best series I've read and I've read a lot)))

Perfect characters (overpowered, but this is novel, so...), perfect main couple interactions, love them so much!

P.S. Ancient time Cat&Mouse is also great, unfortunately nobody is translating and MLT is a bit hard, but still worth the try.

It’s my first time read a crime novel and sometimes it gave a headache when a scientific line came out (don’t understand so hade reread again). Wonder a what profession/degree the author had or maybe had friends with ‘that’ background? Anyway, applaud for the author for the detail and pinpoint of the crime event, that flow of the crime detail not feel too awkward and hard to chew. For the translator thumbs up, so far I just read from the angel blog, even tough there’s mistype and a translate idiom... more>> that can’t be described. Well it’s chinese novel with hard genre there will line with deeper solution, meaning and word that ordinary people that can’t comprehend. Even thought sometime will read the raw when the translation a bit ambiguous, but the abc stil preferable (just because don’t want to split brain for known of the meaning and just lazy). So kudos who translate this!! <<less
