[Seeking good fortune and avoiding misfortune, predicting the future with luck, decisions shaping life.]

Lei Jun: “My golden finger is quite powerful.”

[Good Luck: … Gained a fifth-grade opportunity in the Dao, operating secretly, without worries, good.]

[Bad Luck: … Encountered a great calamity before gaining anything, trapped in danger, death and injury uncertain, ominous.]

This novel shouldn't be rated this low, the start is a little confusing, especially if not translated well, but if you keep reading you will find this is one of the best online novels you will ever read. Comparable to Lord of Mysteries, though the focus is slightly different.

This novel does not have any cliches, any bad tropes, even the characters who are 'bad' have their own reasons and codes of conduct (though they are very hypocritical, there is some level of social and political commentary). The plot is very... more>> well written and intricate, and even though it's not like your typical novel it's still very exciting to read.

The main character is subdued but he's not emotionless, he starts off as weak so he's not directly involved in a lot of things at the beginning, but the world and plot still makes things interesting to read. As the story progress you will see him be very involved.

The power level is essentially 9 levels, from 1 to 9 (they have proper names in the novel). The arc as he goes from level 1 to level 9 is essentially perfect, and is the majority of the novel (first 400 chapters). The next arc is a little weaker but it's still great.

This novel is very unique in the genre of cultivation novels and chinese novels and more people should read it. Essentially, some people might not love this but you won't find anything that makes you irritated at the very least.

I have read the author's other works and they are quite different, I was pretty surprised he could write a novel like this, which feels almost like an antidote in the sea of cliched cultivation novels. <<less

This might be my favorite cultivation novel ever. I love the intricate worldbuilding, the sect politics, the lore, and the languorous pace of the narrative. The protagonist receives providential guidance at key junctures telling him what outcomes the different courses of action he's contemplating would produce, which means he manages to avoid every obstacle standing in his way to cultivation supremacy and takes advantage of the smallest opportunities. He's extremely good at staying out of trouble and away from the spotlight, which is great for me as a reader; I... more>> love it when the protagonist does NOT stress me out with reckless, plot-driving s*upidity.

At the same time, he's not obscenely overpowered or ruthless; in fact, I'd say he starts out as a very detached and calculating character but gradually opens up to his sect and other Daoists, and learns to be good to the people around him when that kindness doesn't come at a cost. His character development is quite subtle, but it's consistent with his gradual immersion in Daoism and I'm enjoying it so far.

The secondary characters are great and they all have their own motivations, stories, and cultivation goals and struggles. Their complex relationships are fun to observe through Lei Jun's keen eye for other people's drama. The female characters are few and far between, but they're strong cultivators with their own lives instead of stereotypical clingy jade beauties, so I have to give the author credit for depicting women as real people.

The story has the potential to heighten the dramatic stakes and narrative tension far beyond their present levels. Surely Lei Jun will one day be forced to choose between terrible options, or have to go with a bad omen over a good one for some reason. The worldbuilding/cultivation world is also just waiting to be explored. I can't wait to see how far Lei Jun's journey will take him.

The translation is great, which certainly improves the reading experience. <<less

I recommend reading this if you want to read cultivation novel with no romance in it. At the latest chapter everything is up to my liking with no downfall in quality. Every chapter is long, so you can enjoy it. The MC is the one who go with the flow and feel mature. If you offend him, he will eradicate trouble so that they will not be making problem in the future. The characters in the novel feel alive and have distinct personality.

This is pretty mediocre. The biggest issue is that, at least in the first 60 chapters, the MC is painfully passive. The story is a cycle of the MC cultivating seclusion while his sect has bad politics going on in the background, the MC's cheat (giving forecasts about what the results of the choices he can make, usually in terms of a ____-grade opportunity, and the grades were never explained so there's not that meaningful) activating and telling him what to do, the MC does exactly what the cheat said... more>> to do (there's basically never any meaningful decision to be made other than doing what the highest rated option says), and then the MC refines whatever thing he got from doing what he was told by the omniscient ball of light residing in his consciousness.

It's not like there's never any initiative on his part, but it's really quite rare, and it's certainly not enough to make me feel like the MC is doing anything to reach his goals (if he even has any).

As tropezero said, the sect situation is pretty annoying. There's constantly mentions of the Li family doing nepotism and members of the Li family either scheming to suppress non-Li disciples or gathering information about them just in case they out do the Li family disciples. But since they never even get close to meaningfully impacting the MC and the MC has shown absolutely no interest in doing anything about it (he really doesn't seem to care very much) it's just kinda frustrating background noise. At least, that's mostly been the case so far.

Spoiler

Although in the last few chapters before I dropped this story at 59 we were told how the sect lost one of their three most important treasures when the sect had internal strife causing the sect to split into the current sect and the sect's biggest enemy because of the Li family trying (and ultimately succeeding) in making the title of sect master hereditary, which made it significantly more annoying

The translation quality is, unfortunately, about par for the course for BOTI, which does the story no favors. Terms are frequently inconsistently translated, there are occasionally chapters where they start using a ton of bold and/or italics before going back to normal, and sometimes they'll use the wrong character's name for a few lines (it's usually possible to figure out who it's supposed to be from context but it's not always easy and it breaks the flow of the story when you do a double take because suddenly it says the MC is laying a trap for the MC). Nothing unreadable by my standards but it's firmly below average for NU. The frequent releases make up for the lacking quality to some extent, at least. <<less

Good start, but wish I could skip the parts about the MC's Sect (though it's possible that will never happen).

Spoiler

Pro - Low key MC, author explores the "fortunes" the MC doesn't choose

Con - Story gets bogged down with the failure that is the MC's sect. They are seriously dysfunctional and it's a wonder they still exist. In any other cultivation story the sect would have been destroyed three times over. I suppose the author was making use of all the drama for the fortune/misfortune mechanic, but I wasn't a fan of the Sect politics and infighting.
