As a high-risk individual, Ye Sangsang received an invitation to the beta test of the holographic game “Criminal Files.”

As a game known for its high degree of freedom, high adaptability, and extremely realistic simulations based on real criminal cases, its beta release garnered significant attention.

As a condition of the beta test, she was required to livestream her gameplay.

Delicate, beautiful, and silent—these were the words often associated with Ye Sangsang.

As a game that had captured the nation’s high expectations, many were baffled when they saw Ye Sangsang.

This was quickly followed by ridicule.

“Someone like her playing from the criminal’s perspective? The victim would probably turn the tables on her.”

“Is she going in as an investigator? A beautiful but useless burden?”

“The victim escaping alive? Don’t make me laugh.”

But as the cases progressed, Ye Sangsang gradually left the audience in awe.

“The criminal!!! Oh no, lock her up, I’m terrified of how she kills!”

“Investigation? Come on, can you guys keep up with Sangsang’s pace?”

“The victim! Ahhh, what a bloody battlefield!”

The livestream chat, once filled with skepticism, eventually overflowed with admiration.

Some even began to suspect that she might actually be a high-intelligence criminal herself.

It wasn’t until later that Ye Sangsang’s holographic crime scene simulations helped solve one real-life case after another.

Audience: ???!!!

Ye Sangsang, facing the camera: Please note, I only perform once.

[Reading Tips:]

1. This story is set in a futuristic, fictional world with holographic crime simulation games. Everything is virtual, so please do not draw parallels to reality.

2. Some parts of the story may reference real-life cases.

Love the story. The excitement, thrilling experience and the psychological of the FL is really fun to discover. All arc are nice but I do need to take a moment before jumping to another arc.😅 Btw, there's no romance in this novel. At first, I I really want romance in this novel but as I keep reading, she really doesn't need to be anyone and maybe she also doesn't want to be in relationship. I love that as she keep playing game, she discover that she still have empathy and... more>> kindness in her heart. <<less

It's rare to find a thriller novel with a female protagonist and no romance at that yet still keep you immersed in it till the end.

I'm a fan of no romance action adventure horror thriller novels with strong female protagonist but it's hard to find this kind of quality.

Although it's a virtual reality theme, it's written like it's a world hopping novel.

... more>> Also the way characters are written so emotionally rich, the psychology, the emotions behind the whole cast keep me reading it.

It's hard to read this kind of heavy theme with no break but it's so good that I can't drop it.

I'll just warn you all that this novel is pretty dark. I've read so many dark theme novels but this is one of the 5 darkest of them.

Just glad that it's not the protagonist's life and she's just experiencing another tragic or psychopathic person's past. Also she ain't a doormat and a prey but the hunter and the first arc will tell you that.

Wash your mind with holy water after this and read some warm slice of life novel. Not because it's dirty, just the negative emotions can be so heavy. <<less

1st arc is good. Although some description is quite.... gruesome. I do like the characters (specially MC - I just love unfeeling and indifferent ones Lmao). I love how the author handled the emotions (from the mu*derer, to the 'Victims' and Investigators).

Spoiler

I teared up the at the end of the 1st arc. Although I have expected it. I felt like shouting at the investigators to stop investigating at the end and just give the family peace. But in the end, I know that after doing it, plus the guilt the Father felt for his daughter, I know that it's doomed to be a BE.

Unpopular Opinion:

For the livestream- why not, I'll take it. This is realistic Lol most of the time, humans are judgemental so the ENDLESS doubts and nonsense chatter in the chat adds some flavour (for me, although some might find it annoying too).

For other details, I don't really mind as long it's not a major plot hole. I'm here for the thrill <<less

I thought it was really good. MC cycles through roles of Criminal, Investigator, and Victim. Each case is pretty detailed and distinct. You see a lot of the psychology of what is going through the minds of all these roles, and the MC who is admittedly not completely psychologically healthy at the beginning.

A point of warning though: The cases do get really dark. Honestly, I feel like the livestream aspect helps put some distance from the situation. Otherwise, I think it would be too intense for me.

An extra note about... more>> the criminal roles: All the scenarios are when the criminal is taking revenge on people who are way worse, and end with the criminal paying the price, as in confessing or even dying. So this isn't glorifying criminal acts. <<less

Has potential, but so far a pretty average thriller.

In the first scenario it was based off a case in the real novel world, so the focus is analyzing it in reverse, discovering the intricate web of interests involved, profiling the mu*derers and reenacting the crime scene from limited information. I don't know if there will be "game original" cases in the future, so far so good anyway.

The problem is that it's a livestream, and while MC is doing all this, we're constantly barraged by comments of impressionable people, who only... more>> serve the purpose of making a large contrast.

E.g.:
Spoiler

MC doesn't instantly go to clean up the evidence in the car and netizens start criticizing her. After she starts cleaning, netizens praise her to high heaven because of her thoroughness.

MC is dissed because of her frail body as a weak woman who will run away crying. Next up she is a cold blooded inhuman creature after bashing the victim with a small hammer. Later she is dissed again, netizens convinced she managed it all due to luck.

[collapse]

Netizens will make a big fuss out of anything MC does and does not do, I find it so disruptive to the story that I started skipping anything written in brackets by chapter 4, but some text still accompanies it, it cannot be completely avoided.

To sum it up in a line from the story:

"Ye Sangsang didn't seem to care about the comments", so why should the reader care?

Aside from that, the author is not so keen in minor details of the story.

Spoiler

When receiving the game console, it is stated that she was thankful it wasn't a big box, but a small necklace, so she could avoid the surveillance of her caretaker and nurses. Not long after, the caretaker points out the empty game box to her, and MC didn't care at all, throwing it aside in a nonchalant manner.

To begin with, MC is being held captive by her family in a psychiatric ward, and she is stuck to a wheelchair. How did the parcel containing the game console even reach her without someone's knowledge?

Ignoring that a VR game where you can act out a mu*derer with 100% realism passed scrutiny and the game company actually sent it to a psychiatric patient (it is the core concept after all), it is mentioned that to mantain people's mental health, a memory-hypnosis procedure is done after reenacting the case. Author didn't consider that players worry of allowing game companies permissions to access any of their data, wouldn't they be even more worried about a literal brainwashing?

[collapse]

Although these can be reasoned out, it ends up being watery content. <<less
