Su Tao had been in love with Xie Jin for four long years.

Everyone knew that Xie Jin was paranoid and had a strong desire for control, while Su Tao was obedient and would listen to anything Xie Jin said.

As a secretary who only knew how to follow orders, how could she stay by his side and have access to privileges that were beyond the reach of ordinary people?

With the “help” of others, Su Tao finally discovered that Xie Jin’s paranoid demands were an attempt to mold her into the image of his former secretary. She was nothing but a substitute.

Without leaving a trace, Su Tao only left a resignation letter and disappeared completely.

No one could have imagined that Xie Jin, who couldn’t find Su Tao, was like a devil. No one was able to calm his rage when he went insane.

The next time Su Tao saw Xie Jin was at the annual meeting of a rising star company in the industry.

She appeared as a shareholder and stunned the crowd, attracting the attention of countless young talents.

Just as she was about to leave, Xie Jin suddenly grabbed her wrist and his fiercely red eyes were filled with madness: “Be good, don’t go.”

Su Tao pulled her hand back and looked at him coldly, “I forgot to tell you, I’ve never been obedient.”

Xie Jin held onto Su Tao’s clothes and choked out the words, “I’ll be good.”

#ChasingWifeAtTheCrematorium#

A paranoid CEO who becomes obedient to his wife X a calm and determined secretary.

i tried gamers, I really did, but I had to stop from the high blood pressure it was causing me 😭

ironically I sympathized with ML more than the MC, even though he is ABSOLUTE GARBAGE MAN. GOOFY AHH BEHAVIOR.

the MC was great at first, but in order to make her seem so smart and successful, it meant everyone opposing her had to be either irredeemably terrible morally and/or mentally. She's honestly a grade A idiot 😭 like??? How are you this socially inept, when you're apparently a really good agent?... more>> Huh???

anyway the ML and the MC deserve eachother honestly 😔

read if you live for the drama™ no matter how dumb it is <<less

I completed the entire novel and actually really liked it despite the 3 reviews I saw. I gave it a try because the title and summary drew me in, but almost didn’t due to negative reviews. I’m glad I gave it a chance anyway!

While I enjoyed the novel and thought many scenes were cute and funny, the negative reviews I read aren’t wrong about the ML. More below:

Spoiler

ML is textbook abusive. He controls what the protagonist wears, what she eats, how she spends her time, etc. The author explained in the later half of the novel that ML acted that way due to his worries for her. The novel explained that ML wanted her to eat seafood because her nails constantly break due to stress, not eat junk food because she eats a lot of it and is picky, wants her to wear pink because he wants her to be his spoiled princess and be an overbearing person who relies on him because she never had that, etc. He doesn’t believe her when she “rebels” (aka expressing her true thoughts and opinions). They truly don’t communicate.

Later on in the novel, he realizes and understands that she simply doesn’t like seafood or dressing in pink. He kept on controlling her without asking about her likes and dislikes, and when he was finally put in her shoes, he cried and was sad over how much of his actions she must’ve endured.

But honestly, it doesn’t erase what he did and how he ab*sed her for few years. Not only did they lack communication, they had an unbalanced power dynamic and she felt unsafe/uncomfortable to say what she really feels. He also didn’t listen or hear her out, or cared about her true likes/dislikes, and assumed her needs. He didn’t respect her as an individual with personal freedom.

As for the ending, the protagonist ends up with the ML at the end of the novel. They get back together after some time apart and the protagonist can stand on her own two feet. They both communicate better, discuss their insecurities, and try to be better for each other. It’s kind of a wife-chasing crematorium, but not really filled with tragedy? It’s training wheels crematorium.

[collapse]

Despite all of that... I liked the novel LOL. It’s a fictional work and I like yandere (he’s not even horribly yandere), unreasonable ML who love their partner in a mostly unhealthy way. In the later half of the novel, he was very cute. In real life, this is not okay at all, but in fiction, I dig it.

However, to each their own! This may not be some people’s cup of tea and may trigger those who’ve been in abusive relationships.

As a side note, the translator’s website is very user-friendly and easy to use. <<less

MC is 100% in a toxic and abusive relationship. The so called ML controls everything about her: what she eats, what she wears, where she goes, where she works, almost all aspects of her life. She was with this guy for 4 years. He will use emotional blackmail and threatens her when she resists or even questions him. She is scared to eat junk food because he does not approve. He forces her to eat seafood even though she says that she does not like it. This is some toxic... more>> and disgusting behaviour and the fact that this guy is the ML makes me want to throw up. Even worse is that they probably get back together, which is just even more vomit enducing. This guy is a s*umbag and MC needs to call the police ASAP and get him out of her life. <<less

Wow this ML is one hell of an abusive bastard.

At least it seems like he's the ML.

I've seen some tr*sh men in novels, especially CEO types. But this guy really takes the cake.

Actual excert:

Spoiler

"I won't go back anymore. You can throw away everything I left behind there. I've already submitted my resignation application to HR. Whether you hire new people or not, I'll automatically resign after 30 days."

Su Tao's gentle voice sounded particularly harsh at this moment.

He took a step forward, grabbed her small face with one hand, pinching her cheeks on both sides, and lifted her chin, forcing her to look at him.

"Little Peach, " his outburst was somewhat exhausted, like an aging hero who wanted to take up his sword but had no strength. "Aren't you afraid of making me angry?"

[collapse]

This guy, in 5 chapters, has repeaedtly shown behavior so incredibly controlling its unreal.

He controls he wardrobe, he controls her food, he controls the people that she meets, he controls her career, everything.

I'd be interested in counting this story if it was about her escaping this piece of sh*t but as it stands reading the story description I dont think thatll be the case

No amount of I'm sorry or ill do whatever you want is enough to make up for this man being awful. <<less

I wanted to give this novel a negative rating if at all possible.

I initially thought that the MC will improve her character after leaving the ML but it turned out that she only switched profession so that more people can bully, manipulate and manhandle her.

Her being a push-over, bias, incompetent and utterly clueless got too overwhelming that I decided to drop the novel.

Up to this point, she is yet to accomplish anything without help from anyone (her ex-boyfriend before and her close friend now). It's either because she hook up... more>> with her superior or because she's a friend. It would have been tolerable if she can stand up for herself or at the very least capable but she's not and I don't believe her character will develop at all. She's basically the type of person who gravitate towards mentally challenged people because she's missing a few screws in her head herself.

This novel is not worth reading. Toxic MC and ML surrounded by deplorable and brainless side characters. <<less

Giving it a 5 for now to pull up the rating, because all I've seen from the bad reviews are character preference/bias. Nothing about how the story is written or how it progresses, which means these reviewers might not even have finished the story (understandable, especially if you're disgusted by the ML). However, I see some value in reading the whole thing (or at least a substantial portion of it) before passing judgment. Will update this review and the score after I've finished.

EDIT: Changing my rating to a 4. ML... more>> was, for all intents and purposes, a train wreck. But he was an entertaining train wreck, like I literally could not look away til I finished the whole thing. There's no need to take him seriously. The only reason I'm giving it a 4 is the slightly weak storytelling. The final reconciliation felt abrupt, given how much it dragged through the story. A solid 4, though. <<less

Wow. I have to say, when I started reading this I expected some satisfying drama and face slapping for the guy. I did NOT think that there would be so much drama. I literally cried throughout the whole story for unknown reasons just bc of how brutal the two of them were to each other and to themselves. There's no way to forgive the ML's insanely controlling and delusional attitude toward her, but I have the tendency to believe that he's not mentally sound. Well, neither of them are, just... more>> one of them did so in a way that inflicted more pain. I am however glad to see them reconcile. Think the two of them really need each other. Not quite a 5 star due to all the toxicity and drama but bumped it up due to the extent of emotion caused. <<less

I'm halfway through the story. I won't lie, I really wanted to drop the story after the first few chapters because the ML really seemed like an @$$. He controls what she eats (always seafood), what she wears (always pink), and never tells her anything. Like no wonder she wanted to leave him, surprised it only took 4 years.

Spoiler

He does explain why he wants her to eat seafood and wear pink but they're s*upid reasons. Like more calcium intake because her nails are brittle and because she looks good in pink. I'm sure there's other ways to get calcium and she probably looks good in other clothes than pink too.

[collapse]

I only kept reading because I wanted to see ML suffer. And I honestly would love for her to find another man, but we all know she's going to end back up with him, but I just hope he levels up his attitude and the way he treats her.

Edit:

I just finished the novel. I will say, it was really hard for me to find the will to keep reading. I just did not really like the couple too much. I kinda wished Jiang Qi was the ML, but then I realized I didn't really like the FL either. I will say, I think the ML and FL really deserve each other due to the dependence they have on each other. <<less

The relationship between the protagonists is not very healthy, both make mistakes, ML too authoritarian and manipulative, FL too condescending and obedient. Up to the breaking point where they mature separately and at this point they can reconstruct a more balanced ratio.

Maybe because I'm not a native English speaker but I had trouble understanding who was male and who was female, in my opinion sometimes the pronouns were wrong and it didn't help either that the author wanted to use the surname Jiang for different characters even unrelated, adding to... more>> the fact that the names were often reversed. <<less

Overall I enjoyed the story, but the writing was average. For example, the author seemed to forget that FL had a serious dislike of her younger brother. I think they also forgot about the mysterious best friend that apparently ran away with another man on her wedding day - first it said she didn't like the husband her family arranged, but later it said this was a guy that successfully chased her in college, and they were in love. But somehow she cheated on him abruptly and went off with... more>> the other man, disappeared for a couple of years, then pops up briefly and never appears again.

I think other readers are incorrect about her being a door mat. They have a weird, overly dependent relationship that would be considered toxic to most people.
Spoiler

It's unclear why he's this way, but hers stems from childhood trauma and feeling like she's never first in someone's heart. So she was actually ok before with him being so controlling because it was... kinda proof that he cared about her so much to obsess like that. It made her feel secure. Until she misunderstood (thanks to the most s*upid gossips in the company) that she wasn't the only one he obsessed over. At that point she refuses to accept it and leaves. And yes, he's controlling and annoying AF to a normal person, but because she never resisted his arrangements, it really never occurred to him that she had any contrary wishes, so he didn't believe it when she expressed them. He enjoyed arranging her life and assumed she didn't object, and got more and more controlling as a result. Basically they were on totally different wavelengths - she spent 4 years going along with what he wanted, then suddenly quit and he couldn't figure out what happened. This isn't actually uncommon, just a very extreme example of what happens if you suppress your true thoughts too much. She ends up being a strong character - sometimes a little too strong for my taste. Contrary to other reviews, she doesn't just roll over as an agent. She is meticulous in courtesies to make connections, yields when necessary, and fights for her rights when called for. She also decisively crushes her enemies when that's the best option. In an industry where networking is everything, she is an EQ master - except in her personal life, which is one aspect I find unrealistic. The whole Jiang Qi mess was totally unnecessary.

He was obnoxiously clingy and emotional, but that's kind of the point of the story. Kinda cute in a way though IRL it'd be annoying AF. Their reconciliation was a bit abrupt in some ways

It's good, but not great. It's entertaining enough of a read that you won't drop it, but the way the ML is written is pretty cringeworthy, like every 'domineering CEO' but also super stalker-y. Also there's a couple weird time-skips that make sense for the story but also feel like things could have been handled better.

Not saying ML and the other side characters didn’t suck bad (*cough* Jiang Qi *cough*), but honestly by the end of this I found myself strongly disappointed and disliking Su Tao’s (MC) character the most. For Every step towards “growth” and potential development, she took at least 7 to 10 steps back to her previous self.

In all of the unfavorable situations she found herself in with the ML she could have made a choice that easily avoided further crossing paths with him and yet she doesn’t entangling herself with him... more>> even more. She was just destined to be written as a doormat pushover. No amount of her running away or “starting anew” can change the fact that her as a character is so easily manipulated. So after a year, all of a sudden the half brother that “took away all the she had” now she’s on good terms with. Sucks to say but she ended up just like her mother. Duped, fooled and worked to the bone only to get none of the credit. She had the brains to get herself out of it but not enough to actually do anything about it, always surrendering to the people who hurt her. What a waste. <<less

Waaaaaah... what do you get when two broken people get together? A super toxic relationship. I’ll preface this all by saying the obvious about how they both had issues from the past that created their personality problems. The ML has your classic emotional ab*se triggers: socially isolating her, monitoring her every move, imposing his will upon her like what she wears, eats and etc., denying her preferences and making her completely dependent on him. The FL allowed him to do all that and didn’t fully articulate what she wants and... more>> why it was necessary for her well being and for the well being of their relationship. She swallowed it all in her stomach after barely mentioning it a few times and did the classic “woman needs man to figure out what’s wrong” scenario. They were both at fault. I honestly dislike almost all characters in this novel except maybe FL’s new boss and ML’s top lackey. Both of those characters proudly declare themselves as s*umbags but are actually pretty decent. I feel like the whole story pretty much revolved around how emotionally, mentally and physically dependent the ML was on the FL. Some people may like how “strong” and “level-headed” the FL is but I think she literally just runs away from her emotional issues. She’s willing to use all sorts of tricks and endure all sorts of humiliation for her career but she can’t work that hard for him? Sure, she suffered, but she silently suffered and only mentioned things a few times before walking away.

Overall, I’ve read worse and the drama in this appeals to certain types so read at your own risk. <<less

The premise was all there for a wife chasing crematorium, but the FL is spineless and the ML is unrepentant. The FL has little to no achievements of her own, even when she broke free from the ml, she parachuted into another company, relying on her connection with her senior classmate. This obviously leads to valid doubts from others. After a year when the ML and FL meet again, the FL is still subservient, pandering to directors, producers etc to give her artistes a chance. I don't see much reflection... more>> the ml, he was the same person he was when she left. Where's the grief, the character development, the regret?

tl is bad too, mix up of names, pronouns etc <<less

The story isn’t exactly earth-shatteringly great, but it kept me hooked til the end so I think it’s worth my rating.

What I liked about this novel is the female lead. She’s far from the usual Chinese romance novel leads you’d find here—she’s smart, decisive, and is born a leader, which is what drove me to read the next chapter again and again.

Of course, the male lead is undeniably toxic. Another reason I managed to push through reading this is I wanted to see the guy suffer, or at least realize... more>> the error of his ways. He is suffocatingly possessive that it’s highly likely you’ll end up seeing him on the news for going on a jealousy-fueled killing spree, but of course these types are romanticised in novels (I like my fictional male lead a tiny bit possessive lol). I believe he got his just deserts though, the FMC broke free of his controlling ways and the insecure man-child is nowhere in sight at the end.

The face-slapping moments don’t feel, I don’t know, fake? Like I wouldn’t say ‘ah this only happens in novels’. Of course she’s got a big boss backing her but we can let that slide haha. She solves most of her problems anyway.

All-in-all, it’s not exactly something that I read just to kill time. I am genuinely curious as to what would happen next, which is very telling.

I just wish Jiang Qi and his manager got a side story. I smell a ship between them 🙃 <<less

This novel had cliche plot but I enjoyed it anyway. The FL here was calm while ML was the overdramatic one.

FL (Su Tao) and ML (Xie Jin) have been together for 4 yrs (w/ 6 months being boss-secretary). ML being possessive and FL being obedient. This favorable arrangement being destroyed due to misunderstanding and scheme of others.

I like that the breakup and separation brought growth to FL as she able to achieve her dreams as celebrity agent. Also, after reunion... even tho ML was able to kinda redeem himself despite... more>> still being clingy, stalkerish and jealous. I like that it took longer for FL to accept him lol

Spoiler

Regarding ML's white moonlight, there's none and it's not true that FL actually not substitution. Previous secretary Qin actually the one who liked ML (but he didn't) and been following ML's preferences and even made similar bracelet to ML's family heir. Also, other co-workers tried to dramatize details to hurt FL bc she promoted easily even with lack of experience.

Not really a romance. FL learns how to place herself first in work and romance. ML is not a super guy. No matter what she says, his actions and thoughts come first like any spoiled Master. He learns to change and does - a tiny bit. I like regret in stories but this dude didn't get enough. No one ever recommends therapy for him which is a shame. Still enjoy the business aspect!

I just reread this and it's worth it!

i’m not sure why this received low ratings because I genuinely adore this story???? I understand and agree that the initial chapters glorify a toxic relationship... but thankfully ML had reasonable reasons why he did that (though I am not 100% convinced)

those who wish to read something that has in-depth character developments and a grovelling by ML trope, should definitely read this!!! I was so angry the first half but ML redeemed himself the second half of the story. I loved how the FL barely gave him a... more>> second look when he came crawling back and thank god the FL didn’t immediately give in to ml.... I loved how the tables turned so much?!?!?!! this story was not what I expected (i expected it to be another brainless story...) but it actually reflected quite a bit of realistic elements in the story?!?!? and translation was perfect too T_______T I enjoyed the story thanks to the good translation so much T________T <<less
