I couldn’t even clear the 2D version, now to clear the game in reality?

Maybe I’ll have to live here for the rest of my life.

Well, even that won’t be easy.

– A player found himself in the game, Dungeon and Stone, as a savage barbarian.

To keep his secret, he must become the mask – must make himself be seen as more savage, more fearless than any others – a paragon of his race in the eyes of the whole world.

Back on earth, in the empty darkened room, the quiet computer again began to whir. Text began to appear on the black screen.

「Synchronization complete. 」

This novel is a gem. It's funny, filled with intriguing mysteries that keeps you engaged. One of the standout aspects is that the main character isn’t unique for being the only one reincarnated which is really refreshing for the genre (more later).

The novel does have some of the typical issues such as plot armor. However in this case it’s handled in a way that feels more natural. The protagonist could have been anyone among the thousands of people reincarnated in this world, but the story focuses on him simply because... more>> he’s the one who got lucky. It’s a clever way of acknowledging the role of chance in the narrative.

The characters are relatively smart (though not always) and the pacing is good so far. I highly recommend giving this novel a chance, it’s one of the best on this genre. <<less

This is a gem. The MC is coldly rational to the limit, but comes to love his companions. The writing style is amazing and hilarious. The characters are 3D. It's got it all.

My only complaint is the MTL, which while fast is not being edited from obvious mistakes (ex: wrong gender for characters).

is a good novel. In my opinion, this novel is a solid 4 out of 5. The protagonist has enough charisma and peculiarities to become memorable, and the power system in the story is well explained and interesting. It's not a perfect story, but it's fun and stimulating. One thing I'd like to comment on: don't believe the crap that most of those one-star reviews are saying. If you read this review and use common sense, you'll realize that most of the complaints are on the same level as complaining... more>> that water is wet. I swear I read a guy who wrote a review of hundreds of words just complaining about how the story is not realistic. Yes, he was complaining that a medieval fantasy story with elves and a barbarian who can become giant is not realistic. <<less

After reading Chinese and Korean novels for the last 6 years and finishing around 50 titles I can state with certainty that this novel is in the top 3 for me. Won't be describing the reasons, but I will say that in the last couple of years I've developed some level of immunity to be dragged into reading non stop and ignoring my other hobbies as it used to happen to me at beginng of my journey, but while reading this novel I feel the thrill and anticipation as if... more>> it's my first time. That's how it is to my taste. I wanna to express my sencere appreciation for everyone who is doing a translation work on this. The chapters are coming so fast that I don't need to put hold on reading for bigger realeases. Thank you very much! <<less

Ok, so this is one of the excuted rpg battles I've read in along time. Someone who understood how to fight as a team the steps to taking down targets in a group and actually knows how to play. Sometimes you get writers who enjoy the "idea" of these books but have little understanding on how to actually play it. The only problem I have is female relationships. It falls into a lot of the asian works issue of weirdly fawning under develope females who fawn all over male lead.... more>> There's two chicks I do like though and one I'm just sick of. It's got this harem feel without actually follow through with it. The weird thing is the actual plot and what not is more interesting then the interactions. Sometimes I wish male authors would realize it's ok not to write "fawning" females. You can have friendship like bro relationships with women and just write it that way. Then layer back in the ladyness because when you write fawning you learn nothing about the woman and it's a gross read. But maybe it's a cultural thing I have no idea because you see it so much in these works.

Highly enjoyable progression. It feels like a well played game from someone who knows it but not filled with that character knows too much. There's secrets they are stumbling into or using methods to puzzel out. Great progresion and I'm enjoying most of all how he's gearing out other players in his party. Just SUPER enjoyable. <<less

Overall good, but, It's so weird, I really wonder why Author made mistake on simple thing they shouldn't. So that changed the good novel to be tr*sh instead, " what a waste. ", For example MC alway managed take advantage on something they shouldn't successed.

It's very good. Surpassed Gluttony as my favorite k-novel. I like Bjorn as a character. And the other characters are all memorable. I surprisingly didn't mind the harem. The author is a very writer, he writes dialogues and action scenes superbly. Even tho most of the action takes place inside the dungeons, the story remains fresh and very gripping. Even tho it's quite dark, bloody and grim, there's always a light shining through. This is also quite humourous at times. This is the top knovel for me. I gave this story a 5 for the first 20ish chapters.... the following 10 gave me concerns. the latest 20 have made me question if I will continue reading.

At 52 the translator has informed the readers that a professional unit is translating it. which is interesting, cause the last 5 chapters have been around 1/5 or maybe 2/5. If the story turns around, I wish any reader the outmost enjoyment. But I'm done with this. GREAT start turned to what a fing waste.

If you are still reading this and wonder... more>> why my ratings are the way they are. The world is interesting, and kinda has a violent turbulent feel, then you find out it just doesn't make any fing sense. Out of the maybe 40ish characters that have shown up for anywhere between 4 sentences and dozens of chapters, no one makes sense in their world. There is no way the rules of that world work and the people we meet grew up there. Which leads me into the absolute hatred of the characters. I just can't stand the MC any more, and the side characters are worthless unlikeable turds. I'm out. <<less

I enjoyed this one.

The action elements were engaging, and the situations were quite fun and sticky. I liked a lot of the characters and the way they interacted with the main character and each other. Author and translator brought a sense of charm to the world.

Looks like the official translation has started up.

... more>> Ashen Clouds, the Translator posted the following Project discontinuation notice.

"Naver, the Korean webtoon/novel platform, has launched a serial fiction service called Yonder for the English-speaking market. This project is included as part of its starter novels. This translation had always been about letting people share and enjoy the great fun I’d had reading this story, so there’s no particular need to keep this TL project ongoing."

Here's to the novel getting some more love and appreciation! Much appreciation for the work up to this point! <<less

I don't like the narrative style. The MC is supposed to be wise or intelligent, but what I can see is someone that can't even take his own advice to think and act. If he thinks before doing something it takes so much time that it's preposterous.

BTW The graphic art of the novel shows how little author cares about realism of shield use.

I thought this was kind of meh at first -- somewhat interesting story, great translation... but without enough going on to keep me reading for much longer -- but then it got addictive fast.

I'm not sure it's a 5/5 story but it's at least a mid 4. Since we can't choose that I'd rather give it a 5.

The MC is very respectable with a well written story. The world is realistic and unforgiving.

The translation is the best one I have ever seen, the amount of effort they put into adding exhaustive notes at the end of every chapter is heartwarming. I'm writing this review solely to support them and keep the project going.

Would also highly recommend "Turns Out To Be a Genius Duelist" (which is from the same author) and "The Tutorial Is Too Hard".

Quick review with minor spoilers.

It's a pretty unique take on the Isekai genre, where the people of the game world are aware of the 'otherworlders' and actively try to arrest/kill them. I think it falls off a little as the story goes on though.

Good points:

Spoiler

Amazing worldbuilding

Game mechanic is pretty unique and interesting (wish it was a real game)

Cool fights

Lots of lying and mindgames

Lots of mystery in the story, none of that 'goddess brought me to the world to kill the demon king!' garbage

[collapse]

Bad Points:

Spoiler

Plot holes, there are quite a lot later on

Wizards are broken and sh*t on everyone and everything, which doesn't make a lot of sense considering the MC is supposed to be super knowledgeable in the game and the story itself claims his Barbarian build is the best

The romance subplot is very infuriating with 0 payoff, there are even NTR bait chapters... Author seems to be setting up for a harem ending, but even as a harem lover myself I think it's a shitty harem

So far so good!

So far, so good! First of all, the MC is not overpowered (at least in the 700 pages that I have read). He starts from scratch with only knowledge about the game, but the world he enters is set 150 years in the future from the game.

The MC is also very human. He's not the helpful kind and experiences emotions like anger and envy, just like a normal person. The side characters are also well-developed and have a strong presence.

I can't say much about the world-building. It's... more>> engaging and vast, but at the same time, it feels so small. (Maybe because I'm still on early chapter / 2nd floor) <<less

It's amazing how the author takes a potentially fun premise with unga-bunga protagonist and writes the most boring and mundane events. Most parts of chapters are spent on running somewhere, stat info dumps or dealing with yet another group of adventurers who try to kill the MC over loot.

There are no fun side characters or character interactions. Every major arc the author gives the MC a new teammate, forces them to run a dungeon together, then casually throws them away from the story. I am at chapter 80+ and not... more>> sure if the current team sticks around or he will do the same trick the third time.

The only even remotely interesting thing happening is the existence of the other players, who get witch hunted by the natives.

Overall it's yet another soulless novel that feels like a bunch of side quests and chores stiched into a story and doesn't shine out in any way. <<less

When I read a novel where the main premise is the MC got isekai'd into their favorite video game, I would expect the author to expand on the world with a new perspective merely playing the game would never give. In Surviving as a Barbarian, the world it takes place in is so incredibly devoid of description, half the time the characters might as well be walking around in a void. The people the MC interacts with are paper thin on detail, often including only race, class, and... more>> gender w/ so little personality I think calling them 1D is an overstatement. Descriptions are so sparse the author doesn't even mention the weapons they carry with them until they actually get used in combat.

The main "focus" of the author's writings here is the stream of consciousness of the MC. It mostly consists of dealing with immediate problems & if there are none it usually time skips to when there is a problem. However for all the time spent on the MC, he never once thinks about what his goals are in this universe. The title of the novel says survive, but it seems the MC is just focused on treating his new life as a game and beating it, again he never considers this problem, I'm just inferring from 90 chapters. For some very light spoilers, the MC becomes

power and very rich

in the first 20 chapters, which completely deflates the tension of surviving. The rest of the story is mostly him exploiting his OP OP gamer knowledge and getting getting very lucky with drops (yes this is a critical part of the MC character power development, getting very lucky with drops as he never shuts up about it when it happens).

This novel makes shield hero look good, so it baffles me it has as high a rating as it does. <<less

Translator is good, at ch49*. I would say this is one of the few web novels I still read and also look forward to updating. I like how the main character is so much solo and parties a lot. I think the different characters and dynamics are fun and done well. I think people who enjoy harsh survival, slow pacing, and attempted flushed out characters will enjoy this. Well executed but not master piece, it's a great novel to come back and have fun with. i hope the author and... more>> story continues to have good arcs, pacing and planning. This is probably one of the better novels I've read on the website. Solid 4.7/5

Some notes extraneous to the actual novel:

  • Chapter lengths are incredibly long (as in, I'm a fast reader and it takes ~5 minutes to read a chapter)
  • Translation quality for the current translator is decent. I'm fairly certain it is chatgpt, but its readable. There are some issues with male/female and some jokes that simply don't seem to work in english.
Actual review:

  1. Writing and dialogue are good, dialogue is natural and flows well
  2. Power scaling is done well
  3. This is something I really like, the novel explores quite a bit into the moral considerations of being transmigrated into another world
    Spoiler

Bjord kills other transmigraters and basically realised its hella f*cked up but he still does it anyways. "Evil spirits" aka transmigraters steal the bodies of people, I'm not sure how to explain it but basically he realised that evil spirits are hella f*cked up

The author nerfed the MC because he gave him a great ability that was broken in early chapters. The MC has this attitude of it making perfect sense and being acceptable. Me if I'm playing a game with him as a character he went from prime gold to beaten up old bronze very fast with that nerf.

This is basically your standard Korean game world novel except better executed than most. The supporting cast is a lot better than what you will find in a lot of this type of novel but honestly still not super interesting. If you like this type of novel you should enjoy this quite a bit. I found the main protagonists overly pragmatic personality and how its championed by the narrative kind of obnoxious, but others may see it as a plus.
