Jinhai City Public Security Bureau newcomer Wu Yu is meek and mild, a man of few words, and completely unconcerned about the trials and tribulations placed before him by his strict boss. All he wants is to simply get by at his job, be paid on time, and play the role of a background actor.

Nobody knew that this young man had a massive bounty placed on his head by a drug lord—as well as the youthful heroic spirit of a dragon-slayer from the abyss.

I enjoyed it but it wasn't as good as the first book for me. Also I feel like the MC got scammed. I really really like how cool the Main character is so when him and the ML get together I was happy but then the ML's personality started to change and I don't like how controlling he ended up. Feel like MC who is a badass didn't deserve that. (May just be me being nitpicky)

i enjoyed it a lot and got me out of my novel reading slump. I laughed and cried whilst reading. Wu yu is the best boy out there and he needs to be loved and I am so glad he got bu chonghua by his side.

kinda didn’t like how the end just kept dragging though. Still, I loved every second of reading this.

This has so many reviews already, but I'll just add one more!

I've never read the first novel, and it's not required to understand this one. I read this once, read the manhua, and then reread it again. I don't think I've ever been more emotionally attached to any characters so much before, ESPECIALLY THE SIDE CHARACTERS!! Although they don't get a lot of screen time, the author made the sub bureau's interactions so lively and interesting. The plot twists also got me sitting on the edge of my seat, especially... more>> when the past gets revealed. MC and ML has gone through so much together (especially MC), and I've never been so emotional for these fictional characters.

The extras are also heartwarming and wholesome, especially the hilarious scenes with the MC/ML from the first novel and ML's aunt, making me smile. They truly deserved and got their happy ending. (As a side note, I hope the author rights a 3rd novel in this universe, hoping Lin Zheng gets a partner too!) <<less

The first time I read this, I remember being confused and overwhelmed because it sounded like a sequel to Po Yun but I think it's better to think of it as happening after the first book, but largely separate.

After a reread I've discovered that I really do enjoy this one and it has grown on me much more— the writing is still quite tidy and the cp is much less flagrant and hesitant to start with— and I think that's actually really enjoyable. Nice character development, intriguing plot with secrets... more>> to uncover, and fun cast.

I also enjoy how at the end, the Po Yun cp also makes an appearance and they get to become friends, and the bit of salt sprinkled at cultural misogyny and corruption, something that keeps getting censored these days.

Would definitely recommend, I recall the translation team for the first book being excellent— I ended up reading the raws, but I trust that these translations are solid! <<less

The first two volumes were really fascinating in terms of plot and police procedurals. The writing is smooth, and the translation is really wonderful, and that kept me plowing through the various action sequences, mysteries and dramas the set this novel's blistering pace. But somewhere in the middle of vol 2, I started to question plausibility and that's probably when the required suspended credibility started to waver. I held on to 136 chapters, and then I lost the will to carry on. I'm going to give it 4 stars, because... more>> the writing is superb, the plot was intricate and mostly well thought out. As for the BL? The romance was slow burn. Surprisingly, I liked the burn better than the fire. <<less

Fantastic!

Loves this as much as the author's other novels with Jiang Ting and Yan Xie! All the characters are super awesome. The author surely knows how to weave a fantastic world with a wonderful and addictive story.

There is a lot I would like to say about our MCs; Wu Yu and Bu Chonghua. But at the same time, I'd have no enough space to write about them.

Their love for each other was magnificent just like their characters.

Wu Yu

Spoiler

Our MC at the beginning is like an abandoned, hurt lone soldier, hiding behind shadows and an ordinary facade. But the strength and sharpness don't stay hidden for long and he is one of the bravest souls out there. His sacrifices, the yearning for freedom, everything was so heartbreaking and filled with endless resilience. He is one badass intelligent character. His past is very tragic, but the people who surrounded him saw the value in him and loved him even when he himself didn't. And our ML was the light that gave him the strength to hold and fight against that dark world he was trapped in.

Bu Chonghua

Spoiler

Our ML being the very handsome cousin of our very handsome captain Yan Xie did not disappoint at all. He was strict and so in love with the MC you can see just how far he'd go to keep him by his side, and not let him drift away with all the bad in the world. He taught him, held him, and loved him, giving him both hope and courage. Loved his obsession with Wu Yu's health and the hilarity that ensued.

Last but not least

Spoiler

You absolutely cannot ignore darling Qin Chuan. This fellow just makes you like him more and more. A very annoying pain in the ass, but a strangely dear one. Once again he slipped through the fingers of authority but well that's just typical Qin Chuan. And I love how resistant he is to Jiang Ting and how fearsome he find Wu Yu, but strangely have a weird bro manship with the MLs, though he did make Bu Chonghua want to mu*der him with his nonsense, still the dynamics are to die for!

To tell you the truth, I've been so very obsessed with this novel and the main CP that I can't even live through a day without re-reading it. The MC and ML have very unique dynamics and I love them with all my heart! ❤️ First of all, like the prequel, this novel contains a lot of detailed forensic analysis, autopsy results, technical analysis, as well as various of information that's based on scientific logic and reason. I see how the author skillfully wrote such crime novels with a lot of details, and I very much appreciate it because providing detailed information might lead to making mistakes. That's why this point alone is already enough for me to give this novel such a high rating.

Second, I like the pairing, Bu Chonghua and Wu Yu, with their distinct personalities that very diverted from any other CPs I've read in other novels by different authors. This is the first time I read a novel with such characters with such personalities, and some people might feel the same way as me. Normally, a gong character would be either a very extroverted, reckless, yet clever and powerful character, or a reserved, introverted, yet strong character. Whereas a shou would be either a delicate yet cunning person or extremely reckless, outgoing, but extremely smart. So BCH and WY's characters are new to me.

The gong, Bu Chonghua, was originally an extremely upright, law-abiding, ruthless, and seemingly cold-hearted person, but actually, he was more than that. He can be caring when facing his cousin and Wu Yu, sarcastic when the situation allowed, and extremely kind to his subordinates. He wasn't just a two-dimensional character.

The same way goes to Wu Yu, who suited the phrase "look like a cinnamon roll, but could actually kill you". He was a realistic person, as if a sentence, "what happens, happens, so be it" always hung above his head.

Spoiler

The thing I like about him the most is when the moment he accepted his and BCH's feelings, he always showed his love without a care towards the world. Perhaps because he had been living under disguise for so long, the moment he had a safe haven, he finally showed his true feelings and personalities.

[collapse]

As for the story, although I had been afraid because of the heavy plot, afraid the the author would suddenly make mistakes and shatter the whole story to pieces, it's still good. Some problematic parts was also mentioned by the author herself, pointing scenes or information that shouldn't have been there. So here are some negative parts I want to point out (big spoilers alert).

Spoiler

First, about Xie Xing and A-Gui being cousins with identical faces. Tell me, is there really such happenings in this world, where cousins share a very identical, twin-like appearances? That part just doesn't make sense to me, unless they were indeed twins, or their mothers were twins and married the same man. IDK.

Second, the formidable characters. How can BCH sneak in under Shark's henchmen's guard and went into Wu yu's rented house just to meet him? Is he really that capable of not making any sounds and lurking inside Wu Yu's house? Or how could he suddenly developed chemical knowledge when Shark asked him to make the drug? Even though he didn't do it in person and just ordered the drug markers to make the chemical gas, is he really that great? Also, about Qin Chuan. I know he's witty and overly clever, but wasn't this character too overpowered?

[collapse]

There were a few loopholes, indeed, some greatly affected the story, some were just small matters. All in all, I rated it 5/5 solely based on the detailed explanation provided by the author and the unique relationship between the CP (plus Yan Xie and Jiang Ting's appearance in it).

Excellent and dark. The novel is intense, I had to take a short break to relax my nerves. The plot is unpredictable and the characters easy to like. Sometimes the suspense had me too nervous and I had to scan ahead before coming back to read it in the usual way.

I already read the other novel before this sequel and liked them both... but this one more since the MC, Wu Yu, has a mentally unstable charm.

100% recommended if you like a strong protagonist, plot twists, and suspense.

Spoiler

The boss-subordinate tag is correct. MC's lover turns out to be his boss, Bu Chonghua. At first, ML didn't like MC cause MC didn't earn his position the usual way, he was assigned by the big bosses. MC's identity was kept secret from everyone for his protection.

Later, as they worked on cases, MC stopped viewing everything like a passerby and started caring. ML and MC became closer. MC's identity was later exposed and things got complicated.

In the end, it's a happy ending.

BIG SPOILERS... that will ruin the suspense 🫣

...

...

1) MC rescued ML many years ago. ML's parents were caught and killed by drug dealers. MC didn't have time to save ML's parents but he was able to save ML.

2) ML's parents were killed when they didn't reveal the identity of the spy Painter. This Painter was the original and later on, MC's code name was also Painter since the first Painter was able to finish his assignment and live. The first Painter was ML's foster father. He had found out that ML's parents martyred themselves to protect him and ML became orphaned.

3) MC's handler didn't commit su*cide. He found out that his father was a criminal and was going to report him. Father and son had a struggle on the roof and the son accidentally fell.

4) MC took over his first cousin's identity. Everyone thought that MC was his cousin, who was officially working for the government. However, his cousin had died long ago. Before his death, he told MC to take his identity and live on. MC was originally raised surrounded by drugs and violence. He was a bodyguard for a drug lord's daughter. He wanted to live a normal life but was unable to do so. He became a mole to hopefully achieve this goal.

This novel is a delightful read, in more ways than one.

I don't know if it's the translation or the author's writing style that changed, but at around ch 45, the story suddenly had a lot of color. Don't get me wrong, MC's situation doesn't get any better. It's just that the portrayal of the characters is much more lifelike, than the prior few chapters, which were pretty monotonous.

MC...... my heart hurt so much for this poor baby. God had really not made it easy for my boy. In his own... more>> words, people get to flip a coin and the result is only decided when the coin drops. There are many forks in the road, people flip this coin. But his chances at flipping this coin are really few and far between. So he cherishes every opportunity he gets to change his fate 🥹 my baby, I need to give you a hug 🫂

Actually, there were a lot of loopholes in the story. But when the revelations happened, most of the loopholes I was concerned about, were addressed neatly. I must say, I was grately impressed with that.

Spoiler

That time when they were stuck in the water underground........ I just wanted to hug the two of them. MC was just so exhausted and he suffered so much while getting there. The scene where they vowed to each other there, just broke hy poor heart to pieces. Seriously, why was fate so harsh on him. It's like the author likes to see this cutie suffer :' (

That's why, the extras seemedextra adorable. Him beaing treated like a beautiful treasure, is just the most satisfying scenario of all time.

A must read, the story line is really intriguing and keeps you guessing the whole time. Somehow the author makes it clear enough for you to follow along but never obvious enough to catch on to any plot twists. The characters all come alive in the story and the main two were exquisite, they had so much depth and life. I will miss them both.

Brother!!! When I tell you I was hooked, I was HOOKED. I rarely read stories about police and investigations (because I belong to the people that cannot see/imagine any image in my head and imagining the action scenes took a lot of brain cell), but this one got me on the edge of my seat every single chapter. I love the translator. They did a very good job at piecing the story together and preserving as much of the original text as they could. I know how difficult to translate... more>> underlying meanings!

The story starts with our Wu Yu trying to be as insignificant as possible. But as we all know, paper cannot hide fire and no matter what, fate always brought Wu Yu back to where he should be. Which is at the top, shining and blazing. I feel for him and his past. I cannot fathom the years he was undercover.

Everything about this book was great. And I truly meant it. My only regret was that I didn’t read Breaking Through the Cloud beforehand. <<less
