It's a pretty good reincarnating, world-building series.

Has a reincarnator who goes and introduces modern tech into a magi-medieval setting. It has great world building and attention to how society works.

Pretty solid approach to feudal society with a well articulated Marxist outlook

... more>> Much of this is propped up by his Marxist approach to history and society - how he analyses his nobles, repression of serfs and tradesman, and the liberation under the enlightened autocratic Duke who is our MC who leads the first stage socialist revolution.

Boring comedy 90% of the time

The comedy can be quite wonderful at specific points when it draws out a character trait, and yet, 90% of the time, it's like an annoying fly buzzing around, since he keeps on repeating the same old jokes over and over again. It's rare that a conversation goes by without the MC thinking or talking about how the speaker deserves a beating... the schtick gets boring fast...

This humour is probably not so accidental, as the holier-than-thou and flawless MC is strong in this one...

The holier-than-thou OP MC

The MC is another wish fulfilment protagonist. You can bet that 90% of the cast of characters this reincarnator/ancient hero/satellite-god meets are downtrodden hot girls, half his age, who he rescues from feudal prejudice and liberates like the other serfs. The fact that there's no romance is sort of irrelevant... the author is much more happy to be every girl's idol than to actually create an actual relationship, which would have at least required some human drama and emotion...

Which isn't to say that the MC as a kind of benevolent father figure is all bad. He is not always right (just always credited and worshiped) and always makes times to listen to the great ideas of his young girl geniuses and grizzled men retainers, who come up with a lot of the specifics to make the MC's plagiarisms a reality. Just... well, it's a sign of lacking emotional development in a character...

Instead of an emotionally developed MC, the kicks come from everyone praising him as his big fanbase of worshipful (and hot) crouching tigers from the proletariat have all been saved by his genius, modern insights and... elementary education!

Magitech and universal education!

Elementary education is pretty fun, and is part of what makes world building so great. There's a lot of really solid social thought, a big emphasis of the importance of math and literacy and new inventions that take the best of modern Earth and magical runes.

Magi-tech, the inner workings of it, is another part of this series that shines, since the author isn't afraid to fuse magic with math and come up with unique ideas for this alternate world's tech.

... and there's fanboying of Cai Guoqiang and Art... but who doesn't like gunpowder and explosions?

Autocratic state... without the bad sides, in fact, what bad sides? Nothing ever goes wrong.

On the other hand, my more cynical self sees a lot of this and notes how much of it is based on ignoring any kind of problem that could happen.

The author himself will frequently interject at how lucky the MC is... the plot armour is all over the place. Whether it's the people he meets, his thrice blessed identities, his immediate social standing even as he steps out of the coffin, the fact that each of his retainers more genius than the next and each downtrodden and in need of saving.

And this carries over to the society he builds. No social issues. Which is great for him, since I doubt authorities in China would look kindly on political issues arising in an autocratic socialist state... We essentially we have a cult of the personality that's all happy-go-lucky without any self-interested middle managers over-reporting, thought police, no one cares that nobody has intellectual property, and they still all work hard for the fearless leader because they're just grateful they aren't s*aves anymore.

This is a super religious world, stressed many times over by the author, but all the people in Gawain's territory are just serfs, so they don't care about religion and don't mind that Gawain isn't religious. In fact, the high priests don't care, because Gawain isn't part of the dark cults, the religions' enemies.

There's not even issues on a social level... I mean, he befriends a (loli) thief in the first chapter, and, of course, the thief adores this atypical noble... instead of, y'know, making off with his gold stamp after chapter 5...

There's just no tension anywhere... Nothing that can go well goes bad. There's no struggle or unexpected circumstance. The MC 'ingeniously' predicts what will happen, and so does it happen... whether it even made sense that way or not.

It's ironic to me that the author is so great at analysing the evils of feudalism and other societies, but is totally happy with not introducing any challenges or hurdles to his MC's society... some of it might be explained by his faith in his socialist backdrop, but it goes beyond that. It's a wish fulfilment that he can reincarnate and have nothing go wrong... due to luck, as the author himself states many a time...

Instead of adding depth to his society building by demonstrating and using the MC and retainers ideas to overcome challenges, he just basically assumes the premise that the MC can do no evil.

Tedious detail, stating instead of showing ideas, and lack of human drama

One more warning though, the series can be tedious, both because the comedy is often flat and boring, and because the author goes off on tangents on details of his technology. This is probably the point that most separates this novel from RTW, it sacrifices drama for detail, often through long expositions.

Unfortunately, particularly with the comedic punches of most conversations, the author just doesn't bother weaving worldbuilding into drama and action, it's all written out in big essays stating and not showing... This is my fundamental for giving this a 3 instead of 4 stars.

I am quite honestly confused about whether I like Sword of Daybreaker or not. At times, I love it, at times I feel like yawning and falling asleep, while at other times I am rolling my eyes and cursing the ideological backdrop... I highly recommend it for those who like territory management and would like a gritty view of feudal fantasy society. It's not for people who are put off by chauvinism or lots of boring details. <<less

It is a great Kingdom Building, Sci-FY, Technological Development, Fantasy, Fiction, Drama Novel.

An awesome novel. One of my favorites.

... more>> This novel is quite similar to the infamous RTW. But both books are different in essence.

RTW (release the witch) looks like a Kingdom Building novel whereas it is actually a juvenile's world revolution. RTW has a simple linear story line.

In contrast, SOTD (Sword of Day-breaker/Dawn) is both kingdom building and some sort of world revolution. At first glance this book looks like a simple story but later on this become much more complex.

"Technological Development promotes Industrial Revolution and Industrial Revolution promotes Social Development." Basically this is MC's motto.

The world structure of the novel is different from Earth's world. So MC cannot implement his Earth knowledge & technology blindly in this world. MC just can't copy paste everything. What he can do is to utilize IDEA or CONCEPT of different sectors. He can improvise things at best. Author's writing is shine brilliantly in this area. Author writes very creatively & excellently about the technological creativity & innovation, the transition from Earth technology to Magical technology and also implementation this technology to this world and the changes & consequences of this changes.

What I most like about this novel is MC's take on world social structure. Author describes in a great detail about the Middle Age time period like common people's ignorance, s*aves lifeless lives etc. Social situations of the world. The author describe very well about people resistant to new changes, ideas and social changes.

What I most like that MC never underestimate this world's Indigenous People. He tries to use various people's talent properly & effectively. MC is clever & smart. He knows very well that he is neither omnipotent nor center of the world. He is a simple catalyst for changes. MC is very foresighted. He properly uses his advanced technology to invaded other areas to achieve his long-term purposes.

MC is very careful about bringing various changes around him. He is sure about the reverse affect which various changes can bring. MC has wanted to bring various social structural changes but sometimes failed for various reasons.

The writing is very fluid and interesting. The story development is smooth. Surprisingly novel's flavor is mixed (Western, Japanese, Chinese). The MC's starting point and world building is quite unique.

There is no romance at all.

Character development is bit lacking.

Like every other Chinese novels Author & MC is on vi*gra but a lesser one. Things developed quickly but still on a likable space. At list better than RTW.

It's an amazing read. I am in love with this book (so I may be biased).

But I think it is much better than others Chinese novels. It should get much more limelight & attention.

One of the most underrated novel on this site. Slow but very good Kingdom building novel.

Some people are saying that it is a copy of Release that witch and thus rating it so low because of this. Sure in the beginning some plots are similar to RTW but the story it entirely different from RTW. I too like RTW but in my opinion Sword of Daybreaker is far better than RTW.

Guys if you like RTW or kingdome building... more>> novels, give it a chance. Only lacking things in this novel is romance. <<less

TL;DR: Highly recommended for people who have the patience to enjoy a highly detailed kingdom building novel. Especially if you liked Release That Witch which is somewhat similar to this novel. It goes in deeper about the details, philosophy, schemes, politics and inventions than RTW. Which has resulted into less battles.

This novel is more about kingdom building and less about war. The novel goes in deep about politics, public opinion, religious belief, scheming and society. We get a thorough explanation about not only how he invents and implement things but... more>> also why he does it.

As others have said, it is similar to Release That Witch. However in my opinion it is also different in a way that it manages to not be called Release That Which 2.0. This novel takes place in the universe of "The Record of Unusual Creatures", once you reach the later chapters (600+) and uncover some answers, you will see that the overarching plot is very different than that of RTW. And how he handles his "opponents" is also very different. The few battles and showoffs the MC has are all well written and hyped up, which offsets this issue somewhat.

Compared to RTW I would say that this novel goes in deeper into the technicalities and philosophy. Less adventuring and conquering. More thinking, talking, drawing up plans and scheming. And boy does our MC scheme well, his plans are several moves ahead of his enemies and allies. There are also some really formidable enemies as well as competent enemy leaders. A lot more factions compared to RTW.

The inventions too have issues due to the physics of the universe working differently. So the MC could not implement his ideas directly and has to rely on competent allies and subordinates to solve things. The biggest difference perhaps is that the MC isn't the only one with talented people, his enemies also have talented people and are progressing while he is trying to get his stuff together. However it is slightly unbelievable that he is progressing the technology in the world this fast. They went from essentially late middle ages to a steampunk (but with magic) industrial age with internet. Though every single of his inventions are explained and fitting according to the lore. It is slightly unbelievable. But then again, the universe this story takes in has galactic empires that have FTL travel and living AI.

As of right now there has also not been any signs of romance. Which is kinda expected because our mc's mind got a little bit warped by his reincarnation procedure. This also leads to certain very interesting and hilarious things later on.

There are few "battles" however the buildup is good. There are plenty of mysteries the MC has to solve. But he doesn't do it alone since he has to rule over his lands and work. So he makes allies, friends and subordinates who can help him solve the mysteries. He does step in occasionally but he is mostly not on the frontlines or in direct command.

I think it is a very well done kingdom building novel. Some people might find it slow, however I really like this slow paced way of planning things out and going into detail about stuff other novels skip in order to fit in more fighting and adventuring. <<less

this is not a review, it was before but after reading the review of tallrice I decided to eliminate my.

This is more little thoughts about the story

he MC is more concerned that the character 1 (i dont remember the name) has ignored the existence of those formulas!------ [ I would have been more upset about the whole child-experimentation-and-deaths but that only me I quess]

The biggest problem of this novel is that the protagonist transform his territory from middle age to industrial revolution (edit I was wrong to modern world) extremely... more>> fast and really? They even created The heat-ray gun, now I cannot take this novel seriously, the credibility is just to low.

The character by name Amber is so annoying....... her intelligence is even lower that of a degenerate, im not kidding I just cannot but hate a character that always I repeat always act like a kid with mental problems. I know that she is basically 90% of the comedy in the novel but I'm repulsed by her. And the fact that she critics without respect all good thing that does the mc? Ugh (I say this after 10 time that she said this)

Can someone explain why we get the perspective of the character mary what is her utility / purpose ? (they show us how she is no longer afraid of her master and how they reconciled) I do not understand why this filler exists, I really hope that the character will become one of the main ones because otherwise it is a 100% useless filler <<less

Clustered and continuous cycle of foreshadowing and exposition passing the 1000 chapter mark with no satisfying revelation. Disclosure and finding of any new piece of historical information is lack luster and just stale.

Reading this has become a chore now. Nothing interesting happens and much of it just tech invention writing and surrounding exploration which comes with as mentioned history exposition which was interesting at first but not after several hundred chapters.

This is one of the best but it's not for every one. It's a slow and steady story that the more you read the better it becomes. I read it far into the story so I'll summarize it for you.

Most say this story is copy of RTW but its not. There's kingdom building in it, but the style is totally different. Moreover unlike RTW kingdom building is not the main focus of the whole story.

The earlier part of the story is about kingdom building. But then it shift heavy into... more>> mystery.

What can you expect from story:

Story is about transmigrated person that were transmigrated as a satellite hovering above a planet. He basically passively observe the planet for a long long time. Observing life and civilization rise and fall. Yet every rise and fall cycle, the civilization on the planet is slowly going backwards. From sci-fi like civ into medieval world on the last reset.

Then during the latest cycle, MC suddenly transmigrated into a body of 700 old deceased person. Yet he's still able to connect to his main satellite body. So it's more like projection or linking rather than total transmigration.

The world itself is going backwards, the next reset cycle (by means of apocalypse) is coming. MC is trying to resist the reset cycle and find out the mystery of this planet and his transmigration.

At first glance it look like just another kingdom building novel with MC bringing in future technology into the world. But it turns out its way more complicated than that.

There are many plot twist and the main charm of the story is the setting or the world itself.

That said there are no romances so far. Also it is a long story with many complicated dialogue, unsuitable for those that only read fast paced fulfilment novel (nothing wrong with that). This kind of story is understandably not popular with mainstream webnovel reader, and unfortunately the translation stopped. There are very readable MTL however (Thank you wnmt*), and I can't recommend you enough to read this work especially if you like works with good world building and mystery. <<less

Is this story good? I would say no... Look it is not terrible but it is close to it. The story has a lot of problems. The characters that are not the MC are just flat and don't have any personality other than being amazed and being explained to why this or this is happening so the reader knows why.

We get the same joke 600 times and no one in the story gets the joke so they fall flat. The plot armor is through the roof and I mean that.... more>> Nothing goes wrong for the MC. He just finds all that he needs. Does he want guns? Here are some? Does he need old tech from the fallen empire? Oh, here is some that people forgot about so don't worry about it.

A fusion of Release that Witch (RtW) and Lord of the mysteries (LotM). Sword of Daybreaker (SoD) feels more like a RtW clone from its plot to its characters but its not a bad thing, it still has its own unique style. Setting is fantasy medieval world with various fantasy races, gods and magic but with traces of sci-fi. Its more of kingdom building novel where technology is slowly being intertwined with magic.

- Like RtW its about introducing modern technology to the fantasy world but where it differs is that... more>> modern tech and sci-fi is being integrated into the magic system, which is interesting and refreshing. Initially author puts in a lot of focus on the reasoning, technical details and logic behind these hybrid technological concepts to make them all believable and plausible but is much less prominent later on as sci-fi and divine elements drop in. I guess these are hard to explain and justify in terms modern science so author starts to rely on suspension of disbelief. I feel that this is counter intuitive to authors initial grounded and realism approach.

- Setting is really unique with a meld of medieval, fantasy, the divine, modern tech and sci-fi. World building is done inside-out so you'll only get to "see" the world much later on.

- Huge cast of characters though the cliche kind (and mirror of RtW). They are competent and also likeable (even the antagonist and opponents), have somewhat lasting presence throughout the novel but due to having a lot of characters involved, the character development, interactions, relationships and individual stories are lacking. I wish more novels follow Log Horizon's style of character management, where author dedicates subplots and story arcs to secondary characters for their own adventures and development.

- Unlike RtW where all the ideas, development plans, technical designs come from the protagonist, in SoD the MC mainly provides guidance and concepts with a little insight on the methodology. Most of the discoveries, R&D, creation process etc comes from his team of scientists and even civilians. His main role is to nudge the development and progress.

- Not a fan of the MC. He is the typical cliche righteous with good morals type. I feel that such characters are too one dimensional. Boring and bland. They are not realistic and relatable to the audience. Moreover such characters always have ridiculously strong plot armor so they can remain the as the good guy. Theres no sacrifice needed to achieve the goals. MC does not experience major setbacks and obstacles that can be painful but serve as a valuable learning experience that drives the character development. No dilemmas or difficult decisions. Everything is smooth sailing. The world is only in black and white instead of shades of grey.

- The kingdom building aspect is different. Unlike RtW where its about going to war and subjugating other kingdoms, in SoD its a mirror of the current modern day geopolitical situation. The different countries are at peace (though there are a few skirmishes) but the war is in a different form. War is via the competition in the economy, society progression, court politics and diplomacy. Consequently this can make the novel boring to a lot of people.

- Also the focus of the kingdom building & the story is geared more towards development of the society as a whole including rival nations. This will disappoint a lot of readers because of the lack of exciting story arcs and makes the pacing feel extremely slow. Moreover theres too much redundant rhetorics that serve no purpose but to increase word count. For example 2 chapters are about establishing diplomatic ties with country A, another 2 chapters with country B and another 2 with C however they all follow the exact same narrative template. These 6 chapters are literally clones, same process and outcomes, only changing the faction name from A to B and to C. In a world where theres a myriad of fantasy races with unique cultures, train of thought and different demeanor, apparently they all behave like a copy paste human inside.

- The style and focus of the narrative feels dull and monotonous. Reading SoD kinda feels like reading a newspaper instead of a novel. Chapters are mostly on announcements on tech progression, reports on society & cultural developments and issues as well as diplomatic ties between factions. With all due respect we read fictional novels not to read about real life news. Consequently main plots moves ever so slowly. Don't get me wrong, I do love these "boring" themes, I'm a fan of Kingdom's Bloodline which is famous for its focus on politics and bureaucracy but its done right by occasionally leveraging on espionage and behind the scenes power struggle episodes to make the narrative feel more alive, dynamic, moving and refreshing.

For now SoD is still worth a read if you can get by the boring themes. <<less

Having read ahead, this is literally RTW. Seriously, I'm not even kidding, this is almost a carbon copy.

  • Reincarnated Chinese keyboard warrior with mysterious memory to remember all sorts of blueprints (at least a decent explanation was given)
  • Awakens in the body of a noble
  • Distant underdeveloped territory
  • Recruits a shadow step capable half elf, a research mage and another capable mage who only does fire magic
  • Develops magic engines to develop territory
  • Battles evil cults and evil church
  • Apparently big war with demon like monsters happened and will happen again
  • Invents magic laser.
Well you get the... more>> point. So leaving it at 4 stars for now <<less

Giving it only 4 stars because the story started to drag on. I liked it very much until like chapter 500-something, but it starts to get stale and boring due to lack of "amazing" arcs. MC is very much in control of everything, so far there have been no real opponents to pose a serious threat. And it's more about group than the MC himself it seems like (somewhat reminds me of one of a kind family building novel which is Protect Our Patriarch - very very good yet so... more>> niche). Expected so much out of the built up mysteries, but I'm given so much filler instead to drag me away from them that i'd rather read some spoiler of ch1000 and forward. I even doubt the plot will ever expand outside to "space" or other worlds, and the MC doesn't even fight personally or anything.

But for a kingdom building genre, this is one of the best novels available because the characters are not 2d, they and the world has some depth to them. Not only that, it has some interesting fragments that are no worse than your reality, e.g fragments, plot talk about:

  • Spoiler
    • A soldier that doesn't know what he's doing. He's "only" executing orders
    • Masses of populations were turned into monsters. Flesh was refined to vaccinate a whole Empire. When asked what's the result of the experiment, one of the characters said it's a, , crystal cluster that infected the population, experimental subjects showed obvious signs of weakness and stagnation, and the only remaining thinking ability disappears quickly. The mutations from the body to the spirit have been irreversible".
    • MC warned others of the threat, but nobody took him seriously. As the narrator says, , , Every warning has been ignored, misinterpreted, and looked at as conspiracy theories. To resist, and to slander the signalist MC, nobility said that it was "uncontrolled anxiety" and "an excuse for violence". They even said that the MC was stimulated by magic creature in the past which damaged his brain and he sees illusisons (turned into a mad cripple). Sounds fam.. Huh?;)
    • A "new order", which is a great reset of the current system.
    • Evil gods and humans. MC asks a priest whether it is this god of holy light or holy light that he follows, and once the priest digs into it, he breaks the shackles that the gods have put on humans and can bypass the evil god to reach to the source of holy light itself.
    • Great many ways that harm people, all in the name of "survival of the race" and other hypocritical "great causes" only used to manipulate people.
    • The value of serfs and civilians to the parasites above them and how the grassrots people are ignorant to all manipulation and other stuff - due to lack of their energy, lack of food for their brains, nutritions, how they live in fear constantly, how they are s*aves that have to work more and more yet still getting less and less. And about the numbness to everything, that they are so ab*sed and used that they will do anything for short term gains that might not be positive or advantageous. The novel also explains the differences between a s*ave and a free man by contrasting other territories living conditions to MC's territory living conditions - e.g. One lives constantly in fear and works all day long, the other lives in happiness and has enough spare energy for hobbies.
    • About how dumbed down s*aves don't question authorities (nobles) and are fine with any ruler and being ruled. MC's efforts for generations to come is to change this, so that everytime Empire rots, they will be able to put in individual efforts, independent thoughts and actions and say "NO" or even revolt and overthrow it.

As someone said, this novel is really kind of a mix of Release that Witch and Lord of The Mysteries.

Shame I also dropped both of those before ending, didn't hold my interest. Here I hoped it would evolve into direction of The Legendary Mechanic - that once the "planet" and civilization is freed, we will move into "space" (since the kingdom building revolves so much around projects and sci-fi technologies) and get some more fights between individuals with all the technology they develop but it just drags on and on like some historical novel, without action, just talking about some projects and whatever..! <<less

It's good. At least the author put effort into the sci fi part and kingdom building part. Lel. The jargons and technical terms are very annoying tho, and the writing is prone to info dump. But overall, it's not bad. I like it when other characters apart from MC also appear smart. As for annoying characters like Amber and Rebecca, just roll your eyes and skip their nonsensical lines.

The story is fresh for me, the setting is good. However while I like kingdom building it´s hardly "new" or particularly exciting to read about. It´s been done a 1000 times before. The background plot surrounding the "kingdom building" is much more interesting. Worth checking out.

Although many people have compared this novel to Release That Witch, the series that entered my mind after reading the story was The Experimental Log of the Crazy Lich. If you have read that one, then you would know what similarities I'm talking about.

For the first few hundred chapters or so, I would definitely judge this novel highly for the same reasons that those people who gave SoD five stars. Since I completely agree with their comments, I won't repeat what they said. But as I type this comment, I'm... more>> still thinking of the reason about the low rating even though my mind was already made up.

So indeed, why the three star rating?

My simple answer would be: predictable and unsatisfying revelations. I mean, we can mostly guess the direction of the story as we go forward, with all the novels we've read before. The problem is, the way that it was delivered was so... so flat. A bit dull, even. The rising tension to the climax of every arc did'nt meet the promise that the previous chapters gave me. Just like what the others comments said, reading has become quite a chore at this point.

Personally, I was probably comparing Dawnbreaker to ELCL and the author's other novel Records of Unusual Creatures throughout the whole time reading. Even with the mysteries of world, the lack of adventure elements has spoiled the sotry for me.

For now, I will continue reading SoD just like some other web novels, albeit with lower expectations. <<less
